The two remixes on this CD are awesome. The original version of Umbrella is not so hot, but the the remixes make it a totally different song.

Rihanna came with another summer anthem. 'umbrella' a great track over all... there are not many artist that have more than one hit.... rihanna can say that. she has had a hit for the past 3 summers and has no sign in slowin down.

Jay-Z did not take over the track like he alwayz tries to do... then rihanna comes with the hotness.. her voice may not b the strongest voice in music but she does kno how to use it and does songs that suit her...

the chorus is timeless "U can stand under my umbrella ella ella ey ey ey"... its the way she is singing it that makes it stick in your head.

There are times where a good artist can make a song that can be a dissapointment, and there are those artists who've made dissapointing songs altogether. Rihanna has been unfortunately one of them. Her latest single, Umbrella from her upcoming record A Good Girl Gone Bad tries to place her into a more Hip Hop Soul style that tries to capture what Beyonce and Ciara have brought to the public. Sadly, Rihanna misses out from that image, and the song doesn't seem to help either. Especially, after the last few singles like the depressing Unfaithful, didn't help her sales. All in all, I think that she needs to find better material for herself, because it is going to be a stormy career left.

Fantastic performances........2005-05-02

"Maldoror" is a unique concept, producer Michael Montes put text rom Comte de Lautreamont in front of Friedlander-- the master cellist read the text and improvised what he saw. The results are nothing short of breathtaking.

If you're not familiar with Friedlander's work with John Zorn and others, you're likely in for quite a pleasant surprise-- I can think of very few musicians I have had the pleasure of hearing who possess such a stunning command of their instrument as Friedlander does. His technique is overwhelming, particularly in pizzicato, and as an improviser, he is agile and inventive. These lead to the great strength of this record, namely that Friedlander can through his technique express something much more visceral than one would expect from any musical performance.

The improvisations are largely oriented on texture and space, whether arco or pizzicato-- each note counts, as does each lack of note. Friedlander may have an overwhelming technique, but what makes both him and this recording brilliant is his ability to make decisions about when to show it and when not to. "The Wind Groans", for example, is better served by long tones and understated delivery, to meet the mood of the piece he read, then it is by any show of powerful playing.

For fans of improvised music and virtuoso performance, this album is essential. Highly recommended.

Dark, Weird & Accessible.......2004-01-12

I bought this because I saw a piece on Erik and this record in the Wire, a magazine I really trust. And though it's not the kind of thing I usually pick up, I love Maldoror. It consists of dark and atmospheric cello scraping, bowing, plucking, and pulling -- all improvised. I know, I know, it sounds like it'd be really weird and inaccessible, but there's something about Friedlander's sense of melody, his technique, and his ability to compose on the fly that makes this a record a classy little thing. It makes me think of dark moments, French films, and John Coltrane's best work. Try it. You'll like it.

A second cup of grace provides growth, maturity, and confidence for the Innocence Mission: a band too few have recognized as a truly great core of musicians -- creating art while advancing a Christ-like steadiness through the sweet noise of music. The early phase of exploitation is captured by A&M: these years are exceptionally deserving. While the self-titled album is a classic unto itselfI feel it lacks some maturity compared to Umbrella which by the way uncorked a fresh audience: a fan base greatly devoted, known as Missionaries. The most cherished, and exceedingly visible pearls are:

All tracks, every one, transcend pop or folk rock: as the lyrics are communicating a worldview that is inclusive, encouraging, and in all directions charming. Some may feel the disc is overproduced: in my view it is not. I feel the Glow while top-notch, is slightly less effective when compared to Umbrella. Umbrella is like a journey in which, we discover a warm friendship, accompanying a few of lifes ups and Downs along the way. Umbrella can cover with beauty, what more can listeners ask?

Karen Peris sings in an easily perceptible manner and feelingly plus, the drums are put on display, unlike the more recent releases: it seems the band is customarily without a drummer these days.

If you like good music, Umbrella is a delicacy, and you should possess it to complete your music collection. It was my introduction to the band: let it be yours

A timeless classic.......2006-03-25

The second offering of the Innocence Mission brings further evidence of the hauntingly beautiful voice of Karen Peris. This early A&M realease while still somewhat (produced sounding) compared to her latest indie releases possesses that intangible combination of melancholy and hope combined with Ms. Peris' breathtaking vocal quality make umbrella a must have.
Largely forgotten and overshadowed by the more commercial "glow" CD, newcomers to the Innocence Mission would do well to start with umbrella. Sadly A&M chose not to add Umbrella to their current catalouge. However, it can still be found at this site and at the Gemm site. A highly recommended and underrated classic.

If I had to keep one CD in my collection of over 200, it would likely be this one(and if not, it would surely be another by IM). It's not the band's favorite, but it has an amazing quality about it. I cannot listen to this simply as background music...it has my complete attention whenever I play it. It best complements quiet times, drives in the country, or bringing me out of the doldrums. Top quality music!!!

Too religious for commercial viability, but excellent.......2002-04-30

It appears as if Karen Peris' eldest brother's {Alex McCullough's} marriage (as discussed on the sublime "Curious") resulted in a marked strengthening of her faith. Unlike "The Innocence Mission", where Peris' Catholicism is only apparent in patches, this album is full of explicit religious imagery all through. This reaches a peak on "Every Hour Here", which is almost a hymn to the love of Jesus, and in such lines as "A halo round me - like Our Lady", "O bless us/So we give our hearts so far", and "God, He gave me a brave heart/But God, He gave me a chicken head".
Given that this album was released at a time when gangsta rap and grunge were emerging to dominate the popular market, it was hardly surprising that something so diametrically opposed to gangsta rap's rebelliousness should completely fail to sell.
Yet, Karen Peris, who likens performing on stage to the early Christians thrown to the lions at the Colloseum in Rome, clearly wanted to show she was a distinctive artist not only for her religious piety.
Moving away from the somehat muted sound of her debut, she was still able to craft an excellent set of pop songs, tuneful and melodic yet still beautiful. Larry Klein continues to provide an excellent ground for Peris' angelic voice. Though some of the songs, such as the title song and "Sorry and Glad Together", barely got going, "And Hiding Away", "Evensong", "Now In This Hush" and "Someday Coming" were near-flawless tunes that were unfortunately overlooked. And the finale, "My Waltzing Days Are Over/Minta's Waltz" was one of the few medleys in pop music that actually works.
Though I will be hated by student radicals for saying this, I think this album should be given a serious listen, if not being as brilliant, accesible or influential as the debut.

A Band That Lives Up To It's Name.......2002-01-29

The Innocence Mission is one of my favorite bands, and, though it's hard to choose, Umbrella is probably my favorite album by them. In an age that seems to prize the vulgar, ugly, stupid, crass, noisy, overhyped and famous, they make music that is graceful, beautiful, thoughtful, reflective, and that celebrates the goodness of faith and of normal, everyday life. The sound is comprized primarily of Don Peris's sometimes swirling and lush, sometimes sparse and delicate guitars, and the lilting, almost elfin voice of wife Karen. These combine with a solid rythm section of drums and bass to create songs that are sometimes explosive burst of joy ("And Hiding Away"), sometimes driving and anthemic ("Now In This Hush"), and sometimes hushed and quiet ("Someday Coming" and "Revolving Man"). Some songs also feature a piano as the primary instrumental accompaniment, ("My Waltzing Days Are Over" and the title track). The lyrics tend towards reflections and affirmations on the joys, trials, worries and goodness of everyday life in songs like "Sorry and Glad Together", "Evensong", and "Revolving Man", or religious reflections in songs like "Every Hour Here" and "Now in this Hush". Karen also write about her own inner struggles and personal fears in songs like "Someday Coming" and the title track. There are times when the music seems to perfectly capture the essence of what the lyrics are saying. One song where this is especially the case is "Revolving Man", where a simple repetitively picked guitar part actually gives the feeling of revolving. I have often described the band as living up to it's name because their music seems to capture a quality of innocence and purity of spirit that is hard to find in the cynical and overly sophisticated world of popular culture. This album is great place to first encounter this wonderful band.

When love goes bad and groundbreaking prog/thrash turns to a groundbreaking bitter alterna-pop obscure classic........2006-03-08

Honestly, I'm surprised Billy Corgan beat Brent to that "despite all my rage" line... that is a perfect way to sum up this album. Here the band turns from one of the most ADD-addled lyrically brilliant prog metal-rock fusioneers of the 90s to angry, bitter anti-romantics and Brent Oberlin even declares himself as a bitter man on "Bitter" as well as just "a f-ed up man" on the standout "Edward Smith." All 13 songs deal with a breakup from Brent's point of view, and anyone who's had girl problems should find new faith in humanity from Brent's bleak but lyrically astute look on love gone bad.

"Tragic Juliet" is a good example of the band's new direction on this album with a chorus you'll be humming for days on end, and "World" is the third "could've been a hit if it was on a bigger label" kinda song along with "Tragic" and the aforemention "Edward...". "Bitter" and "Rusty Nails" are probably the most frank and to the point tracks lyrically (at one point on the latter song Brent salutes his ex with a line of "seig heil yeah"). The climatic guitar bursts and cymbal crashes of "Earwig" are set to a bound to be misinterpreted threat of violence against the frontman's own property, not the woman in question ("Tell your mother hi, cause I am home again, to break what's left. Like I just don't care" - in short, she dumped him, he's mad, he's going home to destroy everything of hers he still has, like a smart, intellectual precursor to Limp S**tkit's "Break Stuff").

The first of two criminally overlooked alterna-prog meets pop rock classic along with 2001's Short Wave... Black Umbrella is a release anyone with a taste for quality songwriting and bitter post-alternative influenced romance-bashing hard rock should love.

Looks to be Thought Industry's fourth CD.Might be tough to categorize their sound.Try diverse metal.Might take like two or three listens for this disc to grow on you,but I thought it was extremely cool.Tracks like "Bitter","Edward Smith","Her Rusty Nail" and "Earwig" lets you know exactly what this five piece is all about.Might appeal to fans of Queens Of The Stone Age,Dream Theater,Fu Manchu and maybe even Faith No More.A decent find.Give it a chance.

Mm. Very iffy. I was ready for a change in Thought Industry's style; having grown from a heavy-metal listening highschool freshman to a college junior throughout their career, I've found that nostalgia allows me to overlook the sillier aspects of TI's music in favor of their unbridled creativity and fascinatingly self-indulgent and pseudo-intellectual lyrics (not a criticizm, the lyrics are profoundly interesting.) So, in theory, I would happily welcome a shift in tonality to accompany my own change of perspective -- that is to say, in theory, I don't mind the idea of Oberlin cutting down on all of the grandiose, politically-oriented, angry emotional self-indulgence of earlier releases in favor of something a bit more minimal and less florid. But the problem is that Black Umbrella just isn't all that interesting, *especially* when you *are* used to such a whirlwind outpouring of creativity from this band. There's still creativity here, but the songs are all similar, with lyrics all similar, about girls being evil heartbreakers and booze being man's best friend. I can't help but wonder if Oberlin isn't trying to romanticize a sort of boozy, mopey-angry image for himself. In any case, the result is just sort of annoying. Aside from cute touches here and there, this does not stand out or inspire like TI's earlier releases did.

I have seen Thought Industry twice at Stryker's lounge. Both times they put on an excellent show. One night Brent Oberlin & They guys from TI came back to my friends house to party. That night was great.

LOVE THIS NEW CD!.......2004-06-07

Yosi's newest CD is upbeat, clever, playful and just plain fun! Our family has very eclectic tastes in music and this collection of has an infectious variety of imaginative tunes- Under A Big Bright Yellow Umbrella has a retro 60's sound, Selling Salt in the Sahara has a cool reggae beat, Stinky Blues is a great blues tune, Hole in the ground has a Ska beat that my three children LOVE and cant help but dance to and My Flag is just plain sweet, (in the old fashioned sense of the word) There's a cool blues and R & B influence throughout this CD with great harmonica playing.

As a school psychologist and a parent of three young children I know that music has an integral part in stimulating language and vocabulary development. If you are looking for catchy, lighthearted tunes that will appeal to children from toddler age to elementary school age children and adults as well, then you'll want this CD!

If you ever get he chance to see Yosi live please do. He has a pied piper way about out him and has an appealing bit of irreverent clowning and mischievous whimsicality that speaks to the real soul of childhood....... and children just love him!
