This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

The Irish Tenors' fourth album sees the trio of Anthony Kearns, Ronan Tynan, and Finbar Wright paying a sentimental musical tribute to Ellis Island, the hallowed landmark that met the majority of immigrants entering the United States at the beginning of the 20th century. Needless to say, the Tenors' repertoire this time around is full of reflective ballads of love, loss, and homesickness, including the original "Isle of Hope, Isle of Tears" that opens this disc. Throughout this studio recording, the Irish Tenors are in fine form and backed by a soft-hued orchestra that never interferes with their soaring vocals. Traditional tunes include "My Wild Irish Rose," "How Are Things in Glocca Mora," and, of course, "Danny Boy" (the last sung by all three tenors, with refreshingly simple solo piano accompaniment). Thankfully, the threesome didn't forget that the immigrants had fun, too, as evidenced by some lighthearted fare; "The Courtin' Medley" features the Tenors at their most upbeat and comical. Ellis Island is a moving aural portrait of the struggles and triumphs of the Irish émigrés and a must-have for fans of the threesome. Newcomers may enjoy the Tenors' debut disc even more, as the earlier live album is a slightly more upbeat and spirited affair. --Jason Verlinde

A glorious concert in a historic setting, with all involved in top notch form. Finbar finds a great old Johnny Cash number, Ronan sings a Glocka
Mora to end all, and Anthony Kearns sings murderously difficult versions
of Macushla and The Croppy Boy like an angel. And their Courtin' and Irish
Medleys, and their "Nation Once Again" trios are simply glorious glees.

With the benefit of a grand theme, this is perhaps the best, and best balanced, of all their programs.

I think this is best CD since Live in Belfast! it also has 2 songs not included on the video! it's a unique album of how the immigration to Ellis Island and New York turned out. It also has songs of the war such as The Green Fields Of France (The Best One) or, the croppy boy. I would recommend this to anyone!

While the singer's pedigree for the task is impeccable (a long-term stint as Ira Gershwin's assistant and early career sponsorship by Liza Minnelli), his interpretations often succeed by playing off a tense axis of fervent emotionalism and a joyous sense of irreverence.

This album has some GREAT songs on it; sophisticated swing being one of my favorites. However many of the other songs are too operatic and lame. I give three stars but this album is definatly worth it just for some of the better songs.

The magnificently talented Michael Feinstein has made one wonderful album after another for nearly two decades. Now that Elektra and Rhino have put together this anthology, I am blown away by the versatility and diversity in Feinstein's recorded output. Such amazing rare gems, combined with the most beloved favorites in the history of American Popular Song. Assembled with wit, intelligence, and obvious affection on the part of the record company, this set is a keeper. You'll love it!

Is there anything this man can't sing? This collection is so varied as to be the definitive collection of songs for any occassion.

This is perfect background music for a dinner party for a whole group but especially for two. Light, romantic and just gorgeous. You just can't go wrong when Michael Feinstein is your musical choice.

There are very few contemporary performers who can hold their own with the truly great interpreters of American popular song. Michael Feinstein is truly the ONLY performer of the "younger" generation who really understands what these songs are all about. His incredible knowledge of this music, and his enthusiasm and passion for it have fueled his career. Rhino Records has done a truly outstanding job of putting together an anthology that exemplifies why Mr. Feinstein has become so beloved by audiences around the world. The packaging is excellent, and filled with interesting photos and background information about many of the selections.

This collection not only contains all the favorites one would expect, but a neat group of surprises too. I especially love the duets with people like Liza Minnelli and Rosemary Clooney, and the various collaborative efforts with songwriters like Jule Styne and Burton Lane accompanying Michael at the piano.

This collection is a classic to be treasured. Bravo Michael!

I have every CD Michael has ever made and this is by far one of the best ones because of Michael's range in singing and his wonderful singing voice. I love his duets with Rosemary Clooney and Liza Minelli. He is a wonderful performer on this double CD and am looking foward to the next CD.

The German soprano Emmy Bettendorf made her operatic debut in 1914 and in Germany (she seldom traveled abroad, mostly a tour of Holland) she was considered one of the most outstanding operatic sopranos of her time. She sang a variety of what in the Italian repertoire is called "spinto" (lyric-dramatic) and in the German repertoire "lyrisch-dramatische" roles. She made a a number of operatic recordings well-known to vocal recording collectors, including one of the best recordings ever of "Senta's Ballad" from Wagner's Der Fliegende Hollander and duets from his Lohengrin and Tannhauser with the incomparable heldentenor Lauritz Melchior. She even ventured into the heavy dramatic repertoire with the role of Brunnhilde in Wagner's Siegfried. By the mid-1920's her voice could no longer sustain such heavy fare and she undertook to sing lighter opera and operetta. It was at this time that she undertook to record much of this popular repertoire for the German Parlophon label. Lucky us.

Duttonlabs of the UK has lovingly transcribed 20 of these titles on the CD "The Lighter Side of Emmy". What we hear is a fresh voice that entirely belies its history of heavier usage. It is perfectly integrated between its registers, with beautiful, floated top notes and a sensuous mezzo-soprano timbre in her mid- and lower range; a wonderful legato and a great sense of phrasing. As well, she treats the text of each song with love and a style idiomatic to this genre of music. I have listened to it many times since I acquired it, just to capture in my mind the luscious sound of the voice.

The recording quality and the transfers are first rate. In addition to Emmy, one gets to hear in duets with Emmy a bit of another great light singer of the period, the tenor Herbert Ernst Groh (though he sings on Track 6, not Track 5 as indicated by the jacket) as well as another popular tenor of the times, Hans Clemens. Otto Dobrindt is the classy conductor on many of the tracks. The included biographical notes are excellent.

With this 75 minute CD, the estimable German soprano of long ago Emmy Bettendorf doubles her representation on the Internet. From her discography of about 200 items, Dr Robert Jones has here selected 20 non-operatic recordings made between the years 1925 and the early 1930s. In the Berlin of those days, her recording company Parlophon seemed always to have inexhaustible resources to pour into their cheap label productions. There were arrangers to render popular instrumental works by Tchaikovsky, Grieg, Elgar, Waldteufel and Rubinstein into song; there was not only a chorus to add but also budding tenors like Herbert Ernst Groh; and there were conductors like Otto Dobrindt to direct it all. The records had wide appeal in their day, one critic asserting that Emmy Bettendorf's singing could "make men go weak at the knees".

With motherhood looming, Emmy Bettendorf retired in 1932. It is possible to find on the Internet a letter she wrote, in faulty English, after WW2 had left her in severely reduced circumstances, in which she lists some preferred items that might be included in food parcels. Her fortunes later revived when she became lecturer in drama at the Berlin Conservatory. She died in 1963.

This is one of a series of recitals from Hanssler in their Vocal Series published in 1999, and which I have to confess I picked up in a bargin bin. Alan Blyth gave it a warmish review in the Sept 99 Gramophone, as warm as possible given the absence of texts and translations in a full price recital. Though I note the Ingeborg Danz Brahms CD in the same series does have texts.

Comparing the Sibelius settings with Soderstrom, Otter and Karneus I found that Camilla Nylund didn't particularly have much to say that these Swedish singers didn't - perhaps since all the Sibelius settings on this CD are of Swedish poets. I can't compare Nylund with fellow Finns Monica Groop and Soile Isokoski. What I bought the CD for were the four settings of Sibelius' contemporary Kuula - but again, without texts had the same vaguely lost feeling as the Gramophone reviewer. A much better buy would be the recital "From the Heart of Finland" by Mattila reviewed March 97 Gramophone 3/1997, Ondine ODE892-2, which includes some different Kuula songs, or Camilla Nylund's Kilpinen CD on CPO, both of these with texts and translations for those of us who don't speak Finnish.

I don't have any particular comment on the Debussy or Britten settings.

I would like to compliment Alison on her beautiful playing and Dave cooke for his unique and complimentary arrangement of this album. This album brought John Field into the present age and transformed it without destroying it. I am not a clasical boffin but this has sparked my interest.

Alison Hood plays the nocturnes of Irish composer John Field with a soft, gentle perfection; never jarring or heavy,even in the most difficult pieces. The softly played whistles and pipes lend interest and an Irish touch to several of the selections. Delightful to listen to at the end of a stressful day.

i had the pleasure of meeting this artist recently, and she is just as special in real life as she is on cd. her beautiful playing is only enhanced by her personality which has made listening to this album even more of a pleasure since meeting her. her skill as a pianist is obvious on every track but really comes into its own on 'around the fairy tree', 'a love is lost but not forgotten' and, my favourite by a long way, 'o'er the moor o'er the mountains'. i will continue to listen to this album daily as i have done since last may, and enjoy the memories.

oh my god...what a lucky day for me when i read the reviews on this album and decided to check it out. this young irish pianist plays the music of field in a arranged in a unique and wonderful way by the well known composer and arranger phil coulter...i'm quite sure the classical snobs will have a "field" day with this one but i hope they have the foresight to look deeper into the beautiful playing on this album and realise that this is the perfect way to bring the music of one of irelands best kept secrets, john field, to a new audience. i look forward to the next album from alison hood. not only does she look wonderful, but she plays like an angel.

Album Description

Caribbean Cowboy is a combination of island, jazzy blues, country and adult contemporary selections. Gene Mitchell was writing and pitching songs to Jimmy Buffett and for a planned album for Joey Lee Hamilton. With both tropical and country songs well written and produced to radio quality, Gene's friend Norman Saleet encouraged Gene to release a CD himself as a singer/songwriter. The result was the combination of songs to make the title Caribbean Cowboy. Track 1, Rum And Coca-Cola (not to be confused with the Andrew Sister's song in the 1940's), is an original upbeat tune and is a crowd favorite. Full of the tropics, sailing and beaches, this song has become Gene's theme song as it is the first song from the first CD and introduced him to his continuosly growing audience. "Rum and Coca-Cola, java and granola, one is for the night time, one is for the day, one gets me going, one carries me away!" With lyrics like that, Rum and Coca-Cola is the perfect party song. Track 2, Caribbean Cowboy, is a well written and produced song that combines the old west cowboy hop-a-long music with upbeat Caribbean music for the chorus. "I've got no horse, I've got a boat....I'm a Caribbean Cowboy, I'll never change, I'm riding the wind instead of the range..." leads the listener on a delightful adventure. Kids love this song and Caribbean Cowboy will soon be a children's book. Track 3, Jellyfish, is a bluesy reagge song about a girl's boyfriend who is "like a jellyfish, you can see right through him." Track 4, ah..Moonlit Bay, is a wonderfully romantic song played and sang as smooth as they get. Track 5, A Mile Hig On You, upbeat pop country-rock song about flying away and leaving your love behind and then "coming back from Denver, a mile high on you." Track 6, Heart In Tow, uses a nautical theme to describe falling in love and having your heart towed in a different direction than previously planned. A wonderful love song. Track 7, Different Stories, perhaps the greatest ballad to date written by Gene Mitchell. Peaceful story line tells the tale of a true to life couple who met in the Virgin Isles and sailed away to a new home in Florida. The actual couple still reside in Florida and the sailboat they were married on and sailed the Caribbean is on the cover of Caribbean Cowboy. Track 8, Time Stands Still, is a dynamic love song with strong lyrics. Track 9, Hometown Girls, is a straight forward country tune complete with mandolin and fiddle. Tells the story of a roaming advernturer who leaves the big city behind to come back home to his hometown girl. Track 10, Cinnamon Bay, is upbeat, tropical and tells the tale of adventures and romance on the smallest of the U.S. Virgin Islands, St. John. Cinnamon Bay leaves the listener with wanting to return to Track 1, Rum and Coca-Cola and start the Caribbean Cowboy adventure over again.

The songs on this album are some of the best I've heard in recent years. The tunes are catchy and lyrics are meaningful. "Time Stands Still" could be an instant classic, by anyone's standards. Highly recommended!

The music on this CD is wonderful. You can listen to the songs over and over without getting tired of them like most top 40 songs. "Heart in Tow" and "Time Stands Still" were very important songs for my wife and myself while we were dating. I think that anyone in love would relate to "Time Stands Still". Grab a tropical drink and relax to the music of Gene Mitchell. If you are in Panama City, FL, try to catch him live. His music is a real treat.

Having heard Gene Mitchell's previous work and witnessed his superb live performances, I was not surprised at the quality of songs on Greetings From Florida. Gene continues to create great music. This is a very worthwhile purchase.
