Editorial Reviews

Clark County Press
It was apparent that the two put a lot of time crafting their original ideas into a very enjoyable album.

Product Description
Cooler Heads Prevail is a two-member Pop/AC group which concede to some recent comparisons with Steely Dan, Al Stewart, and Sting. The feels change from intimate ballads to burning funk and the Heads add some pop and mild rock material to finish off a well-rounded first effort.

The banjo conjures up images of bluegrass and country and there are touches of that here, but Akira Satake is far more adventurous. He pushes his instrument (and koto, which he also plays) into territory where it's not often found, such as on "Tail Wag Dog Jig (Parts 1 & 2)," which includes singing heavily influenced by Finnish group Värttinä. By taking the banjo out of its normal context and placing it next to instruments from other cultures (and the banjo's origins are African), Satake gives himself a freedom to create unusual sounds, and with support from talent like fiddler Johnny Cunningham and frame drummer Glen Velez, he goes anywhere and everywhere his imagination can carry him. Add to that a remarkably impressive technique, and you have a winner here. --Chris Nickson

5 out of 5 stars The Next Level.......2002-04-12

Wordsworth wrote that,"Every great and original artist, in proportion as he is great and original, must himself create the taste by which he is to be relished". Akira has done this. As Mason Williams blurred the distinction between classical and pop with Classical Gas, he has gone one step further by lifting banjo music to a new level of creativity. What Akira Satake has achieved is akin to what Van Gogh and Jackson Pollock did for painting; taken the art another glorious step further. Such international diversity of sounds and arrangements show up the Nashville 'speed is all' attitude for what it is worth. I look forward to hearing Akira's next CD with keen anticipation. This one I have waited for for years.

You have found the music to take you places you never were before. This CD will do things to your head that even you didn't know could be done! The melodys are straight out of a fairy tale with the strains and illusions of inner pleasure! If you need to go to that place, buy this CD and let my words become Gospel. Thank you Mr Satake for the trip. And thanks for letting me ride in first class..... Mudpuppy

An excellent album that coalesces a variety of different musical styles into a logical blend due to the strong compositions of Mr. Satake. There's humor, mysticism, hot licks, funky rhythms, intelligence, intimacy, artistic daring, and accessibility. What more do you want?

5 out of 5 stars Anschell's Best.......2006-08-08

My name is Julian Bridges, and I used to be neighbors and very good friends with Bill Anschell and his family. His is an amazing pianist, and all of these pieces are great. This is, in my opinion, his very best album. It is worth the money, these are all amazing songs. And the drummer, Woody Williams (who actually used to be my drum teacher) is an amazing drummer. Listen to track 9, Woody's Turn, and you will be amazed. These are all great songs.

4 out of 5 stars euphonious jazz!.......2004-03-04

Bill Anschell is a wonderful pianist who plays the piano poignantly. This cd clearly demonstrates his skill. The problem, however, is how one song stands out among all the others on the cd. Track 4: "Little Niles" is the most outstanding piece on the cd, and it best displays the skill of Anschell. The intruiging arrangement of the percussion complements the piano and bass beautifully, giving it a mysterious, provocative feel. I have never heard a better performance of this song. I would say this song would make purchasing this cd worthwhile. Even though track 4 makes all the other songs pale in comparison, it is still quite pleasing to hear how skillful the jazz performers are.
