After spending a handsome portion of one's life partial to such truly vintage American pop music as Bing Crosby, the Mills Brothers and Ella Fitzgerald, one would have to acquire a taste for the sounds of the 60's and 70's in small doses, sans haste. However, such a partialist (like this author) needn't fear from The Beatles and Eric Clapton "culture shock" if he bent an ear to "The Last Living Argonaut--" for Mel MacKaron, a genuine renneissance man of music, offers on his album fresh and passionately rendered covers of 60's folk classics (the instrumentations all his own) and sings with a zest for the notes and life itself that makes it impossible not to smile. As highly recommendable also are MacKaron's four original works: the plaintive, driving "Over You" and "Hurricane," the heart-rending ode "Love's Canticle," and, most notably, the Beatles-inspired "Tomorrow," bearing on its brilliant melody a message. Worth its weight in gold.
