Motown did so many things well in the '60s and early '70s that this overview of the label's smashes (and some lesser-known classics) practically demands four CDs. It gets them, too, filling them with single mixes of more than 100 tracks. That the running order begins with Barrett Strong's statement of purpose "Money (That's What I Want)" and ends with Marvin Gaye's statement of concern "Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology)" says a lot about how far the company moved in its golden decade--but no more so than what the same two cuts' differences in sound get across. The company was able to blend the smooth and the harsh in ways that few other pop entities have ever mastered, thereby getting over not only to the feet and the wallet, but to the heart. --Rickey Wright

4 out of 5 stars MONO-TOWN.......2007-02-25

HITSVILLE USA is a box set that's clearly marked as a SINGLES COLLECTION-- that means these 104 tracks are in the original monaural sound. If you're looking for stereo mixes, this isn't the collection for you. That issue aside, the only real criticism of the album is one of programming-- songs tend to be clustered by artist or group. Perhaps a more thorough shuffle was in order.

Each CD jewel case is fronted with a repro of a Gordy Co. label, including one of the very first MOTOWNs, which was pale pink in color. The accompanying 68-page long box book is quite comprehensive. Recording dates for all songs and chart positions are given. There's lots of great photos; artists and groups are given a few pages of bio each. This HITSVILLE USA four-CD box set is fairly extensive, and about all you'd ever need in a compilation of MOTOWN 45s.

this was my true introduction to the music of motown and now i see why motown was great a lot of these song i frist heard by other artist but hearing the orginals has made appericate the motown sound so much more and i believe anyone who hears these songs will enjoy them for a lifetime and i know i am

4 out of 5 stars Longer Songs.......2006-12-09

The Songs on this are FANTASTIC! I Love Mono Recording. Everyone says that if it's stereo, it "sounds better". I think NOT! It Sounds alright. But, Hey, if you want longer mono versions of the music, without the unnecessary extensions, buy this. For example, Nowhere To Run on this box set-2:58.
Motown Box-Nowhere To Run-2:46-TWELVE SECONDS!There's A Big Difference there.
Also, With Dancing In The Street, my favorite part is on this, when Martha says "Yeah", at the end, on Motown Box, 4 seconds are 'remastered'. (frown)Therefore, it is'nt there. BUT, people, There are a few notable songs missing. Quicksand, By Martha & the Vandellas, Bye Bye Baby, By Mary Wells, Playboy, by the Marvelettes, When The Lovelight starts shining through His eyes, by the Supremes, Hitch Hike, By Marvin Gaye, and others, you know what I mean? So, overall, this is the better box to get.

5 out of 5 stars Pretty Much All You Need.......2006-10-17

There are so many good songs here, you can't go wrong. Don't let the whole 'mono' thing scare you away, either. With a decent stereo, these sound just fine. Just turn up the bass a little and crank it loud. I like about 80% of the songs in this collection, and for the price you can't go wrong; Nice booklet w/ lots of cool pictures included. With this collection, you'd only need to buy a handful of other discs to complete your Motown collection...

5 out of 5 stars This is the Motown sound!.......2006-08-11

What is Motown all about? The answer lies within the music of this rather impressive line-up of songs on "Hitsville USA: The Motown Singles Collection 1959-1971." It's the story of how a gifted songwriter, Berry Gordy, Jr., makes his way on up the ladder of success spearheading one of if not the most successful
of all R&B-based record companies during the golden age of American popular music. Detroit, Michigan, known as the Motor City, gained yet another nickname: Hitsville USA. Everyone referred to it as Motown. In this collection, all of the well-known groups (The Supremes, The Temptations, The Four Tops, The Miracles, Gladys Knight and the Pips, Jr. Walker & the All-Stars, The Jackson 5) are represented as well as the known solo artists (Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Mary Wells, Brenda Holloway). Included also are some wonderful one or two-shot wonders (Shorty Long, Brenda Holloway, Eddie Holland [of Motown's hit-making songwriting trio H-D-H], The Velvelettes, The Elgins, The Monitors, The Contours) and more. What's interesting about this set is that there are many of the well-known songs along with some songs that you probably just don't hear anymore or weren't that well-known. So you get your fair share of both like the Supremes' well-known "Baby Love" and Shorty Long's rare but wonderful "Function at the Junction." The downside of this set is nothing too alarming. Not all the artists' hit songs, big and small, are included and I think that's done so that other little-known-but-definitely-worth-discovering are given a chance at spin time, too; even some from the top artists, too. Think about it: if every single Motown record that made the charts was included, this collection would just balloon up, and there'd be no telling how far. So this is a very nice general overview of those first 12 and golden years of Motown. That's what this is all about: the general overview. Granted, if you want to investiagte further about a certain artist's music, there are numerous collections out there devoted just to them like the single "Ultimate Collection" CDs, or box collections of the artist. But, back to this one. Included within is a very nice 68-page booklet containing essays and phots of ALL the artists, plus musician credits, the track-by-track listing of the whole set, including original release date, label, and chart position.
In the middle of the book the different 45s are pictured all together on a two-page spread which was neat, and on the cover are the picture sleeves. It was an unusual move to put no artists and only songs on the back of the individual discs. The same goes for the back of the box. The paper inserts of the CD cases are record labels that have just the label name: Gordy, Soul, Motown, Tamla. Still, out of all the Motown best of various artists collections, this is the big one! It's great party music and dance music. People young and old will love this. The sound on here is terrific and powerful, but, yes, it is in mono. If you look in the back of the booklet, there is noted that the original single masters were used (the 45 RPM versions), so what does that tell you? Nevertheless, the sound is strong for 1992 remastering. Together, this set is living proof that Motown wasn't just a hit-making machine of a record-company, it was a feeling!

This box set contains 19 separate CD reproductions of the Clash's original U.K. singles, in paper sleeves with the original single artwork. This might seem a tad ridiculous at first--after all, CDs can hold 80 minutes of music, right? But every possible B-side has been included--songs from 12- and 7-inches, many of those rare tracks only released in other countries--and some of the CDs have as many as eight tracks. One of the earliest (and strongest) criticisms of CD reissues has been the way in which they tend to divorce the listener from the context of original releases; obviously that's not the case here. All of the group's major single statements are here, from their earliest buzz saw manifestos to the latter experiments in dub. If the Clash are indeed the Only Band That Matters for you, don't hesitate in ordering this one. --Mike McGonigal

4 out of 5 stars A SINGLE DISCOVERY.......2007-06-11

I AM A HUGE CLASH FAN , HAVING DISCOVERED THEM IN 1982 NEAR THE END OF THEIR JOURNEY . I PURCHASED THIS COLLECTION MORE TO SATISFY MY CURIOSITY MORE THAN ANYTHING ELSE . I ENJOYED IT OVERALL , AND EVEN FOUND ONE ADDITIONAL SANDINISTA TRACK [ RADIO ONE ]! I THOUGHT I HAD EVERYTHING .
THE ONLY REASON I DID NOT GIVE THIS 5 STARS IS THE PACKAGING . IN AN EFFORT TO BE ACCURATE , THEY RELEASED EACH SINGLE ON ONE DISC WITH THE ORIGINAL ARTWORK . THAT MAKES FOR 19 CDs . THE FIRST HAS ONLY TWO TRACKS , AND 3:40 MINUTES OF MUSIC . I WISH THEY HAD CONSOLIDATED ! ALSO , THE COMMENTS ARE RATHER INCOMPLETE , AS IN " ARGENTINIAN 7" ". WAS IT A DIFFERENT MIX ? THIS IS A WELCOME ADDITION TO THE CLASH LEGACY , EVEN IF YOU WILL HAVE TO LOAD YOUR CD PLAYER FOUR TIMES...........

4 out of 5 stars Not all available elsewhere.......2007-06-01

Not to be confused with the one-disc, 18 track collection "The Singles," this is a box set that collects the Clash's UK singles on 19 individual discs that are designed to look like black vinyl. Since it includes not just the original B-sides of the vinyl singles, but also alternate B-sides from releases in different markets, the total length and track listing is quite considerable, 67 tracks total. Since the ordering follows the UK singles releases, not the US ones, there are a few oddities that may seem a bit humorous. For example, "Train in Vain," one of the biggest US hits, is included here only as an alternate B-side to the "Bankrobber" single.

I shouldn't need to tell serious Clash fans that this set has a lot of fine material. Still, I should say that for anyone who is just looking for a career-retrospective of the Clash, you might find the CLASH ON BROADWAY box set, or even THE ESSENTIAL CLASH more user-friendly than the 19 disc format here. The real audience for this set is the Clash completist, who really wants to have the total recorded works of the Clash on CD.

It is true of course that some of the tracks are available elsewhere, and certain tracks may appear on as many as five other discs. Collectors can expect some duplication. Still, it is not true, as an earlier posting implied, that all of this is available elsewhere. I have tried to compile a list of what is distinctive about this set.

(1) The "Capital Radio EP" was a free vinyl giveaway distributed by New Musical Express magazine. It included an interview conducted by Tony Parsons on a moving train. A few minutes of this was included on the STORY OF THE CLASH compilation, but not the two part, 12 minute version included here. The instrumental "Listen" plays through part of the interview, but to hear it without the talk, you have to get SUPER BLACK MARKET CLASH.

(2) The live version of "London's Burning" from the "Remote Control" single was once released on CD on a disc called 1977 REVISITED: CRUCIAL MUSIC, but that has been out of print for years, so it is only currently available here.

(3) This set includes a pair of "dub" remixes of "Armagideon Time, "Justice Tonight" (running time: 4:09) and "Kick it Over" (4:44), presented as two separate tracks from different single releases. That is a little different from the combined "Justice Tonight/Kick it Over" track on SUPER BLACK MARKET CLASH (8: 53) and even more different from the earlier 7:00 version of "Justice Tonight/Kick it Over" on BLACK MARKET CLASH.

(4) "Rockers Galore...UK Tour" is a reworking of "Bankrobber" with Mikey Dread singing new lyrics about touring with the Clash. This is not the same track as "Robber Dub" on SUPER BLACK MARKET CLASH, which lacks the Dread vocal and lyrics.

(5) "Radio One" from the "Hitsville UK" single is a fun Mikey Dread composition with Dread on vocals. The lyrics complain about the lack of reggae music on the BBC.

(6) This set has two single re-edits of "The Magnificent Seven" from the 7" single (3:39) and the 12" single (4:30). Both of these are shorter than the version on the SANDINISTA album (5:29). The longer 12" version is available on the single-disc THE SINGLES CD, but the 7" version is only available on CD here.

(7) There are also two versions of the instrumental "The Magnificent Dance" from the 7" (3:35) and 12" (5:36) singles. The longer version is on SUPER BLACK MARKET CLASH, but the shorter one is only available on CD here.

(8) "Outside Broadcast" is a jaw-dropping variation of "This is Radio Clash" with mostly different lyrics that reference everything from "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" to "Lord of the Dance." Truly unique and a highlight of this set.

(9) "Radio 5" is a dub remix of "This is Radio Clash" with lots of rap style record scratching. It is more conventional than "Outside Broadcast," but worth a listen.

(10) "Long Time Jerk" from the "Rock the Casbah" single runs 5:08, almost twice as long as the version on SUPER BLACK MARKET CLASH (2:57).

(11) "Inoculated City" from the "Should I Stay or Should I Go Single" incorporates a radio commercial about toilets into the middle of the song. Either this is the original radio commercial that the "Flushco" company sued to have removed from the US release, or it is a substitute commercial that was only on the UK single. Either way, it adds a more satiric tone to the song than is found on the version on the US release of COMBAT ROCK

(12) "Straight to Hell" appears here in its short single version, running only 3:51. That is shorter than the version that appears on COMBAT ROCK (5:33) and the still longer version on CLASH ON BROADWAY (6: 50). I am not sure longer is better. I rather like the shortest version.

(13) and (14) The 12" single of "This is England" included two tracks that are only available on CD here, "Do it Now" and "Sex Mad Roar." I think these are better than several of the tracks that did appear on the CUT THE CRAP album.

Obviously, some of the above are only slight variations of familiar tracks, but there are also interesting rarities like "Outside Broadcast" and "Sex Mad Roar." The set goes a long way toward making all the previously uncollected Clash tracks available, though there are still a few exceptions. Around the time of the STORY OF THE CLASH release, the Clash put out a CD-single called "Back to Brixton" that contained three remixes of "The Guns of Brixton" that are not included here. Also, the discography of CLASH ON BROADWAY lists a B-Side called "Radio 6." If that is not a misprint for "Radio 5," then it is missing here.

1 out of 5 stars Turning rebellion into money.......2007-04-29

All of this material (in some form or another*) is available on Clash album releases. This set was released for one reason, and one reason only: so our good friends at Legacy could buy themselves a few brand new Cadillacs. It will sound cliche, but it has to be said that Strummer would *never* have approved this. It's not coincidence that they held off twenty years and then rushed this out in the years after his death. Please don't fall for it.

*for instance, "Armagideon Time" is merely a shorter version of "Justice Tonight/Kick It Over," which is on Super Black Market Clash.

The most comprehensive anthology of the Rolling Stones' prime early work collects every single from the beginning up through 1971, A- and B-sides. All the obvious hits are here ("Satisfaction," "Jumping Jack Flash," "Honky Tonk Women," "Brown Sugar") as well as several B-sides ("Stoned," "I Want to Be Loved," "I Don't Know Why AKA I Don't Know Why I Love You") not previously released on CD. But it's the unrelenting succession of great cuts that make this a landmark collection. No band in the history of rock and roll has a catalog as substantial and hard-hitting. Quite simply, one the most essential rock collections ever released. --Rob O'Connor

3 out of 5 stars All glitter and tarnished gold.......2007-02-26

THE ROLLING STONES SINGLES COLLECTION * THE LONDON YEARS consists of three CDs packed in the LP-sized box that was in vogue 10 or 15 years ago-- in hindsight, a wastefully expensive package. The included 72-page giant book is of recycled-quality paper. It's pages are dyed several starkly annoying colors, and all graphics are in low-grade B&W. Two pages of text in front, and two in back bookend the spread out song lyrics and lousy-looking photos. A hack job, design-wise.

The music is little better, sonically. There's a persistent dullness to a lot of these tracks. Andrew Oldham is credited with oversight of this project, so it's surprising that the transfers aren't more vibrant. This great material has been badly served. Recommended only for serious fans or completists. A middling rating for a mediocre product.

5 out of 5 stars Stoned To My seat listening to this.......2004-06-03

A comprehensive collection of single releases from 1963-71 which is far more than it proclaims in it's title. This is the most complete collection of Rolling Stones singles and b-sides available on CD format. From their first in June of 1963 (Come On b/w I Want to Be Loved), you will find almost every aspect of the Stones singles material represented, including British flip-sides and Decca/London singles released after 1971. This 3CD (4LP) set overlaps thirty-five (35) songs from the Hot Rocks collections (4CDs), but offers an additional twenty-three (23) selections. Remaining true to the singles, songs such as Sympathy For the Devil, You Can't Always Get What You Want, and Dandelion are heard as they were in their original edited (or extended) "single" form for this album. note-though it would have been a great highlight, this collection does not contain Street Fighting Man as it is heard in it's initial 7" form, that version remains otherwise unavailable on any official CD or LP. When the song Wild Horses was released as a single, it's b-side Sway was found in alternate form as well; that recording was not owned by Decca/London, and thus was not included in this collection.

4 out of 5 stars A Box of Stones that Rocks!!!.......2003-09-05

What a great idea! While their most noteworthy contemporaries, the Beatles, were one of the first bands to explore the possibilities of creating great albums, by and large the Stones remained a band that created listenable, danceable, rockable hit singles. (There were some exceptional albums, however, such as Aftermath and Beggars Banquet.) So, their original record company has a great idea: Why not gather together ALL the Stones singles (the ones released on the London label from the years 1963-1976) with their flip sides (both US and UK) and release them in one great big beautiful box! Brilliant, huh??? Actually, it is an excellent concept and, for the most part, well executed. It is true that many of the Stones great singles are here: "Satisfaction," "Get Off of My Cloud," "Brown Sugar," "Let's Spend the Night Together," etc. It is also true that many of their lesser known singles and fabulous flips (B-sides) are here as well. Many other bands would feel very lucky to have just one song as good as "The Spider and the Fly," "The Under-assistant West Cost Promotion Man," "Play With Fire," "Little Red Rooster," and "Ruby Tuesday". So, that means it's a perfect compilation, right? Well, not quite. For one thing, both hits and flips include a lot of clunkers, such as "Sad Day", "Memo from Turner," "The Singer Not the Song" and "Surprise, Surprise." Also included are some of the mid-sixties demos later gathered on the album Metamorphosis, such as "I Don't Know Why" and "Jiving Sister Fanny." They are interesting ideas, but obviously unfinished. Finally, since this is a singles collection, that means we get the cut version of "You Can't Always Get What You Want." Most listeners will no doubt want the full version that contains the choral section at the beginning, found on the Let It Bleed album. Still, over 3/4 of the cuts are worthwhile, and many are classics not easy to find in one place. So, grab your boxers, put on this box, and rock this town!!!

5 out of 5 stars Great Stones Collection Starter Kit.......2002-12-11

This is the only Rolling Stones album I have, and I must say that it is quite exceptional. When I first got the album I was amazed by how many songs I had heard and enjoyed, and yet how many more great quality songs were available to learn. Now I can't imagine a time when I didn't know these songs, they are so good. I have listened to this collection many many times, and yes, the Stones are definitely as good as you've heard. Since I (haven't had the chance to) have not followed their career throughout time, I feel inadequate to say too much about the Stones except to say that I REALLY enjoy this set and highly recommend it to others. The new remastered set would be good, except it hasn't nearly the same amount of music and alot of redundancy to this set. I also don't know how much the improvement of remastering will do, these songs sound great as presented here. Since the Stones have much more blues sound than the beatles or other sixties contemporaries, I really like their sound. My favorite highlights: Come On (Chuck Berry did it, but this one really cooks,) Little Red Rooster (almost better than Howlin' Wolf's version,) Get Off My Cloud, Mother's Little Helper, Paint it Black, Sympathy for the Devil, etc. etc. etc. Don't miss out on this legendary rock band and this great set.

The arrival of The Singles demonstrates perfect timing. With the impulse to treat 1980s pop with irony finally dying and cutting-edge American bands such as the Rapture and the Faint directly sourcing Brit synth-pop, this lavish box set now sounds like a key dance-rock primer. Unlike the other major players in the early 1980s British Invasion of America, Simon Le Bon, John Taylor, Roger Taylor, Andy Taylor, and Nick Rhodes weren't afraid to rock. They rocked hardest on their early singles, as the glossy black box of the first 13 singles, lovingly recreated for CD, proves. The first eight--from the turbo-powered disco of "Planet Earth" to the synthetic Beatles-influenced pop of "Is There Something I Should Know?"--work on the tension between the band's mega-pop ambitions and their rudimentary instrumental skills, creating an eerie, erotic desperation. The full compliment of B-sides--particularly a hysterical, uber-youth club stab at David Bowie's "Fame"--charm with their gung-ho ridiculousness. "A View to a Kill" may be slick Bond theme, but this set is so evocative of strange pop times that you'll end up with "Rio" and "The Wild Boys" on a permanent mind-loop. --Garry Mulholland

5 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL!.......2007-01-16

Original artwork, B-Sides, great music. What more can be said.
This compiliation includes all of their singles from Planet Earth to A View to A Kill in the original sleeve artwork (UK artwork). A must have for any D2 fan.

5 out of 5 stars Singles as they should be.......2007-01-12

I absolutely love this collection! Sure, there have been compilation CDs that have several of these songs on them, but to have them on CD as they originally were, complete with the original artwork, makes the experience that much more special for those of us who had the 45s back in the day, back when we'd sit and look at the cover while the music was playing. It is truly a must-have for anyone who considers themselves a Duran Duran fan.

5 out of 5 stars Return of the cool.......2006-12-14

For those of us who owned these singles on vinyl way way back in the day this set is heaven. We can now hear those obscure tracks like Late Bar and Khanda. "Why a Kh" you ask? New Wave! No rules, no boundries, experimental fun. A break from the harsh rebellion of punk and with taste of eccentric dance and sex appeal to boot. If anything this set should be bought because it captures the energy and vitality of Duran's early career. I don't think there are any weak songs in the bunch, but I've always loved early DD. I'd rather hear an early DD B-side than much of what's on the radio these days anyway.

I've read some complaints that all of these could be put on one disc- well, sure. But, as Kramer would say, "Why go to the park and fly a kite when you can just pop a pill?" It's so nice to have them in some semblance of their original form, with all the artwork, same order and in very smart packaging. I say 'smart' because I like the shiny little black disc holder for the set. It's very cool and true to early Duran Duran album art. Besides, if you want them all on one disc, just import to your iTunes and burn. You'd have to be crazy to carry these around in a CD player anyway. I've learned, always make a copy and save the good stuff for when you need to make another- and for a big fan of early Duran Duran, this IS the good stuff! :-)

3 out of 5 stars what the heck 13 discs!.......2006-09-08

I am a big Duran Duran fan. I have every album made from the 80s. I made the mistake of buying this before I carefully looked at the contents.

Now the music is great and it has songs not found anywhere else. I really liked the Re-mix versions of songs such as Save a prayer and Union of the snake.

But what I hated about this was this thing has 13 discs thats right 13 discs, why? All these songs could have easily fit on 3 discs or 4 tops. This thing is bulky and expensive. I imagine if they would have fit this in to less discs it could have been half the price.

I ended up having to create my own mix cds.

I really want to buy the other box set 1986 - 1995 but I am afraid I will hate the form of that box set also.

5 out of 5 stars Made me Smile.......2006-03-01

Awesome Duran Duran box set - the songs were neatly compiled in beautifully arranged mini looking album covers. Really brought back alot of memories. I would recommend this to all true Duranies!

Album Description

This 10-CD box set features all 213 soul singles released by Stax/Volt in this period (1972-1975) are contained in Volume 3, which like the previous compilations features a panoply of big hits as well as a surprising number of undeservedly obscure gems. Stax historian (and box co-producer) Rob Bowman tells the whole story in his 47,000-word essay. And the last word on the subject is The Memphis Sound lives. Artists include Eddie Floyd, Albert King, The MG's, The Emotions, Black Nasty, Major Lance, Katie Love, Inez Foxx, The Bar-Kays and many more. The discs are housed in a oversized deluxe box (approx. 12 x 12 x 1 1/2). 1994.

4 out of 5 stars The thug who killed Stax.......2007-01-05

According to Rob Bowman, it's pretty clear that greedy Jonnie Baylor, a stupid lowlife thug to whom Al Bell acceeded way too much power, did more than anyone to kill Stax. This pathetic crook earns a special place in African-American hell alongside Johnnie Cochran and OJ Simpson. Read Bowman's "Soulsville, USA" and learn how a piece of trash helped destroy one of the greatest musical legacies in American history.

5 out of 5 stars 213 amazing songs.......2004-12-30

I own all 3 Complete Stax-Volt Soul Singles and perhaps I'm in the minority but this, the 3rd Volume, is my personal favorite. Being a child of the 70's, there is an accesibility to the 70's soul sound which I have always gravitated towards and this collection does not disappoint. I know comparing any one of these volumes to the others is unfair criticism since these collections serve as an intense overall summary of the entire Stax-Volt singles collection but some listeners new to the Stax sound may tend to overlook this CD set due to the historical importance of the earlier Stax library.

Do not pass this one or you will miss out on 213 astounding songs that will fill your heart with delight. I will avoid trying to single out any particular favorite because there are too many to mention, it's that good. This really is a must buy set if you own either volume 1 or 2 and also if you are a fan of that 70's soul sound. These songs will take you through an emotional roller coaster with themes of love lost, love won, and everything in between.

4 out of 5 stars Buy the 3rd Set!.......2002-01-14

If you enjoyed the first set ( 1959- 1968) and the second set ( 1968-1971), then you need to buy the 3rd set ( 1972-1975).

Stax was in an expanding phase due to the recent success of Shaft, as well as other high quality artists like Albert King, Johnnie Taylor, and the Staple Singers. The third set describes the change in the distribution deal that ultimately lead to the downfall of Stax.

The 3rd set is a necessary purchase for those people that purchased both first and second sets due to the continued quality that Stax released throughout their existence and, in my opinion, literally contined until the McLemore studio in Memphis was padlocked.

The first 8 discs contain great hits as well as great artists. The last 2 discs are bare due to many artists that bailed in 1974 in order to continue their respective careers. However, many unknowns prove to be very good!

The hard luck that befell on Stax will make the Stax lover very sad. Although the company went through several phases in its structure and development, the quality of product remained high.

The Memphis Sound Lives!

5 out of 5 stars the end of a love affair.......2000-06-24

Who killed Stax Records? Well, this is a question that Rob Bowman, Stax scholar, try to answer in the text he wrote for this box set. Bowman talks about money, power, ambition, inflated egos, betrayals and the fight between an independent music label and a giant media corporation to indicate why Stax Records ended in 1975. Maybe the music industry killed Stax Records using payola as a poison. Maybe Disco Music killed Stax Records and Soul Music in general when it arises from the underground clubs to the top ten lists in the early seventies. Whoever or whatever killed Stax Records in the mid 70's didn't kill it's music. Forget the critics who said that this box set isn't good as the first (the black box) and the second (the blue box) Stax boxes. THE COMPLETE STAX/VOLT SOUL SINGLES - VOLUME 3, the red box, is a compilation of epic proportions, the definitive document of the end of an era in Soul Music and in Black culture. The final chapter in Stax' history is full of great music and beautiful voices. I think that it's an impossible task to mention in a few lines all the best musical moments of a 10 CD compilation that has more than 10 hours of music, but i can say that some of these great musical moments are provided by the voices of almost forgotten artists like Annette Thomas, Hot Sauce, Veda Brown, The Mad Lads, The Temprees, Mel and Tim and The Newcomers. These artists' records and the records of Stax' veterans like Rufus Thomas, William Bell, Eddie Floyd, Johnnie Taylor, Isaac Hayes and The Bar-Kays are among the best 70's soul output. The red box proves that Stax produced great music until the end. Stax died, but it's music will live forever. Right on.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Not the Motown I Know and Love.......2006-07-11

I have loved the Motown sound ever since I was a little kid. So many of those songs have added pleasure to my life. A few years ago I bought the first box set and voraciously consumed it. Every song there was a classic. I only wished it included a lot more music.

I recently saw that there was a second installment to Hitsville USA. I bought it immediately, and I was encouraged by the generally good reviews here on Amazon. But, wow, I regretfully must report to you that this set does not have the Motown Sound that I know and love. Perhaps a quarter of these songs are very good, but the other three-quarters I do not like at all. They are campy, disco-like atrocities which in my mind are the antithesis of the earthy, passionate, natural sound of real Motown. I do like soul music outside of Motown, but these songs do not come close to even good, authentic soul music. Most of these are bad disco songs which have the second-generation Motown label affixed for prestige. Please don't get this expecting the classic Motown sound, because you won't find it here. Even the small percentage of good songs here don't sound like Motown; I'm not sure exactly how you would categorize them.

The remaining 75% of the music on these discs is of that category of "Music that I Affirmatively Try to Avoid." If Motown was one of the pinnacles of modern music, many of these songs are the valleys. Real Motown was silk; this is a plastic tarp. Again, I emphasize the synthetic, synthesizer-intensive foundation, with the pre-pubescent, screechy, annoying vocals. Motown is all about a thumping, plodding deep bass, with a great guitar groove, and supernaturally beatiful lyrics and voices. Even most of Smokey's stuff here doesn't do much for me, and I love Smokey. The amazing documentary film "In the Shadow of Motown" might have discussed this period in Motown's history, if it did, I'm sure it is characterized as the (steep, almost vertical) decline. The folks who were the subject matter of that film were REAL MUSICIANS, the best musicians the world has ever known; they weren't a bunch of beeping, buzzing computers and polyester-wearing prancing disco-dancers.

I will never listen to these discs straight-through again. I'll just skip over to the few good tracks. The preponderance of these songs were downright painful, they represent the worst of the 70's and 80's. I wish they had merely augmented the collection of real Motown, rather than used the songs which rode on the coat-tails of the real (and legendary) Motown.

5 out of 5 stars Order from Amazon.com directly instead........2006-03-16

In the past years I have ordered from individuals via Amazon as opposed to Amazon.com directly. This time, this particular item was offered through Amazon at basically the same cost and I received the item faster than I ever had before. From now on if Amazon offers any item I wish to purchase, I'll order it through Amazon directly.

4 out of 5 stars El supremo follow up to Motown V-1.......2006-02-21

Not quite as strong as the first Motown boxed set but then again I'm partial to the earlier songs during the illustrious Motown of the '60s. 4.5 stars.

ALL I CAN SAY IS IF YOU LIKE THE MOTOWN SOUND THEN YOU WOULD LIKE THIS CD. I LIKE IT AND ENJOY IT AND I WOULD DEFINITELY RECOMMEND ANYONE WHO LIKES THE MOTOWN SOUND OF YESTERYEAR TO BUY THIS ALBUM BECAUSE YOU WOULD DEFINITELY ENJOY IT.

5 out of 5 stars Great selection.......2004-05-12

The tunes on these disks are varied in style and sound quite different from one another. The older selection from 59-71 has a real sound from yesteryear.
They are both great selections of singles from their day.

5 out of 5 stars Super collection-I finally get Meet El Presidente single version.......2007-01-16

This is a companion collection to the original singles box 1980-1985. The packaging is similiar in that you get individual discs in original artwork of single sleeves. I finally get the single version of Meet El Presidente. I really enjoyed the B-Sides as well, as most of my singles were vinyl and don't play as well anymore. This is an awesome addition to a Duran Duran fans collection.

3 out of 5 stars Do you believe in shame? cd single.......2005-12-01

I think i've figured out the flaw on The Singles 86-04: (Disc 06) Do You Believe In Shame? (Cd Single) track 2 The Krush Brothers LSD Edit. it is actually the songs from the big thing cd tracks 11 & 12 "the edge of america" (cd track length 2:37) & "lake shore driving" (cd track length 3:03) combined was an edit. the track on the singles is 3:30. so, i've entered the song in my music collection database as this "The Edge Of America / Lake Shore Driving (The Krush Brothers LSD Edit)". I think that's the closest to the actual title as i can get. just an fyi.

5 out of 5 stars The Endless Pursuit. . ........2005-09-14

. . . of the real villian, that is the endless (so it would seem)pursuit of the B-side singles. Unlike the 1st 81-85 boxset, not all the b-sides are present (The Wedding album especially). Maybe it's because by then, because of the introduction of cd's, there wasn't really a so called b-side. However, I suppose that's part of the Duran Duran game for the true fans. Not to despair, this boxset contains many remixes I've never heard or even knew about... so I was estatic over the collection. If I had a complaint about this set it would only be that it stopped at 1995 and didn't include the Medazzaland material. Otherwise a true gem to my Duran Duran song collection. Truly amazing!

5 out of 5 stars More In Depth Review.......2005-07-10

This is my new and updated review. The Duran Duran Singles Box Set 1985-1995 is awesome. I am so pleased. I will admit, there are a few things about the set that puzzle me. I am definitly glad that there are more songs on some of the individual CD's this time than with the last set. But the choice of songs baffles me a bit. The CD for "Ordinary World" includes "My Antartica," "Skin Trade," "Save a Prayer," "Hungry Like the Wolf," "The Reflex," "Girls on Film," and another version of "Ordinary World." The extreme Duranie, (I'm just a big Duranie but don't know all the different mixes) might argue that these are different mixes, but I just wonder why they decided to put songs that were from the past on the set verses later recorded songs. I don't know if it was because they were no longer with EMI or what, but it seems like it would have been cool if they could have thrown a few "Meddazaland" or "Pop Trash" singles on the set. It's almost like the "Ordinary World" single is like a mini sampler of the popular older musc. None of the really popular older songs missing from the set "Rio," "Is There Something I Should Know," and "A View To A Kill" can be found on the set. I tale that back, "Wild Boys" is missing and that was a popular single as was "Union of the Snake."

I am so happy with this set because finally we get a lot of mixes of some of the later songs like "White Lines." A few more things that irk me, the individual CD jackets dont have the track listing for the CD on it and the discs are all grey so you have to have the big box or booklet to know the listings on the disc you choose to listen to. Of course you know what the single is based on the CD jacket cover art, but you don't know what the bonus goodies are.

The set also includes some songs that weren't included on previous full CD releases including, "God," "This Is How A Road Gets Made," "Decadance," "Throb," "Yo Bad Azizi," "Water Babies," "The Needle and the Damage Done," and "Make Me Smile," (which was on the first box set on the Reflex single.)

If you have the first set, the second set is a must have so you can sit your box sets next to each other and marvel in all of your little Duran Duran singles! I really, really love the remixes. I have always liked the "Oakland Fonk" mix of "White Lines," and it's nice to have it on CD. The "Violence of Summer" single includes 7 remixes of this song. You get 14 CD singles that were from the albums-"Notorious," "Big Thing," "Liberty," "Duran Duran (Wedding Album), and "Thank You." The single "Burning The Ground," is also included on this set.

5 out of 5 stars A Happy Duranie!.......2005-07-05

I'm so glad I spent the money (finally) to purchase this boxed set! I'm a really big fan of the 12 inch singles that the band used to sell, and it is great to get a few of the old favorites on this set as well as everything that was from the era when the original 5 started to fall off one by one. Very good buy - cover art brings back a lot of memories!

5 out of 5 stars Everything, Much Larger Amounts.......2005-08-16

I couldn't be happier with this box set. It covers what I think is the begining of Depeche Mode's best period. There are a few remixes included here that I don't have on the original CD maxi-singles that I bought at the time of original release so I am thinking they might be from vinyl 12" releases or promo releases. The best thing about these mixes is that they don't stray too far from the original. Some may have slightly altered arrangements or tempos, but they aren't remixed beyond recognition, as so many modern mixes are. The vocals remain mostly intact, and the songs' original feeling and mood remains pretty much the same. Some would question the reason for purchasing such an expansive boxed set of singles when not that much variety is present in the mixes of the songs. For me, the biggest reward is often in the b-sides of the singles, and the live tracks. DM's b-sides are often as good as ( if not better than )their a-side counterpart, and this box set is a true treasure chest of undiscovered gems. One highlight is the Quad Mix of Enjoy the Silence, here presented in an almost suite-like manner, with seperate, completely different moods. It was previously only available in the US on 12" vinyl. Another is Dangerous, which is so good it should have at least been an album track. The vast quantity of great songs is a real testament to the abilities of Martin Gore, probably one of the most overlooked pop songwriters around . Overall not a bad price for half a dozen singles with well over 50 songs. An absolute must-have for a serious DM fan or collector.

4 out of 5 stars ALMOST Complete.......2004-06-24

Wonderdful continuation on the box sets of Depeche. the Only thing missing is the US 12" release of Behind the Wheel/Route 66 megamix!! Why is this track alwayd overlooked. it's far superior to the Shep Pettibone mix or the destroyed singlemix! This mix keeps the darkness of the original Lp version and combines it with the sinister cover of Route 66. other than this travesty, the box is complete from Depeche's shining years.

5 out of 5 stars Excelente.......2004-05-05

Una muy buena colección. el box set 4 trae muy buenos temas, además de traer unas remezclas espectaculares.
No duden en comprarlo.

5 out of 5 stars Depeche Mode - 1987-90........2004-04-04

"Singles Box 4" is a box set that covers Depeche Mode's material from 1987 to early 1990. During this time, the Mode released six singles ("Strangelove," "Never Let Me Down Again," "Behind the Wheel," "Everything Counts," "Personal Jesus," and "Enjoy the Silence"), all of which are packaged here in their original artwork with all the b-sides and remixes as they were originally released. That means there are no unreleased cuts, no bootlegged remixes, or the like. Everything in this box set has been previously released. From 1987-90, Depeche Mode were establishing themselves as platinum superstars in America, where they released three albums: "Music for the Masses," the live disc "101," and the breakthrough smash "Violator." Highlights include the Phil Harding remix of "Strangelove," Shep Pettibone's slick remix of "Behind the Wheel," the house update of "Everything Counts," an excellent acoustic re-recording of "Personal Jesus," the should-have-been-a-single b-side "Dangerous," and a deep house re-working of the group's first American Top Ten hit "Enjoy the Silence" (the Bass Line). In terms of liner notes, there isn't much to report, though the CDs do come with a booklet that gives the complete tracklisting. No lyrics, no photos. On the plus side, it looks like these singles have been remastered, as I noticed some improvement in the sound quality. If you're a DM obsessive, then these singles are a must-own. Not only are they well-packaged, but they cover one of Depeche Mode's most exciting periods of their career.

I'm biased; I think Peggy Lee is amazing. The box is just a lot more of a good thing. Nice presentation, thoughtful notes, wonderful sounding masters, great photos.

5 out of 5 stars PEGGY LEE: Sexier Vocalist Than Madonna.......2004-04-15

The majority of the recordings on "The Singles Collection" were recorded/issued and were huge hits way before my time. As I listen to MISS PEGGY LEE throughout this Box, her vocal sex appeal is way too hard to ignore and dismiss...the woman sung with a simmering and blistering sexiness, it's her vocal trademark amongst many other singer's exceptional attributes - regardless of how subtle she may have consciously maintained her efforts to not offend with the times she lived in, Miss Lee was gifted with a MONUMENTAL vocal instrument that could melt solid gold! Peggy Lee, by far, is a sincere musical artist, beyond Madonna's $$$ ambitions, which by the way, fall flat: Madonna is no singer, yet, she quietly molded herself after the ultimate best: Peggy Lee! But, back to PEGGY. This woman was gifted with a vocal range most singers would envy. Simply put, PEGGY LEE is one of a handful of irresistable female vocalists music fans can not ignore once exposed to her high quality recordings. My first encounter with Peggy Lee was, and will forever be imprinted in my musical & visual mind, on a variety show back in 1969 when I was a child(Carol Burnett Show?) and she was singing her modern day trademark classic(one of many!) "Is That All There Is?". I didn't know who the hell this woman was, but, she left a huge musical impression on me! I never bought that "45", but, in the early 1980's while rummaging through a resale shop of classic record Lps, I came upon PEGGY LEE's "IS THAT ALL THERE IS" album: no questions asked, I bought it...my reaction upon listening: TOTALLY STUNNED!!! Fast forward to early 2004...saw two Peggy Lee Box Sets: "THE SINGLES COLLECTION" & "MISS PEGGY LEE"..no hesitation, I am a proud owner of her two box sets and am looking for more! Before my time, but, PEGGY LEE ROCKS!!!

5 out of 5 stars A Peggy Lee Treasure-trove!.......2003-02-27

A MUST for all true-blue Peggy fans. A few hits & tons of rare
sides, some unheard since the original releases. Beautifully designed & annotated, obviously a labor of love!

5 out of 5 stars The Fabulous Miss Lee.......2003-02-12

This collection is a wonderful addition to all the other records and disc that I have by Peggy Lee. I'm ready for 4 more disc if they will only release them. I know that there are many many fans who feel the same as I do.

5 out of 5 stars Over thirty years of Peggy's sensational music.......2002-12-29

This set is one of the best-presented boxed sets I've come across. There are extensive notes, a discography, pictures of LP sleeves and other pictures too. The set opens like a hardback book, with the CD's on the inside of the front and back covers. The music is dominated by her years on Capitol (especially the 1940's), but begins with three tracks from her Benny Goodman days, followed by two with Bob Crosby. What can a woman do? (track 6 on CD 1) is the first time we hear Peggy's own music, but the rest of that CD and the other three CD's concentrate entirely on her studio singles, up to Some cats know (1975), her last new single. Senza fine, a Japanese single in 2001 that was originally recorded in 1964, plus five studio out-takes, including false starts and rehearsals, complete the set.

Even on 4 CD's, it is not possible to include all Peggy's singles, but it is clear that a serious effort has been made to include singles which had not been previously available on CD - there are almost fifty of them, plus one song, Moments like this, which was going to be a single but was never released. Live and album versions of the song have been previously released, but the original single version is available here for the first time ever.

Of the previously released material, the most obvious omission is Riders in the sky, which was an American number two hit for Peggy in 1949, but this is readily available on other compilations. All the tracks that are absolutely essential - Manana, The folks who live on the hill, Fever and Is that all there is? - are included. Black coffee was never released as a single, so does not qualify.

This is a cleverly compiled set which is designed to include as much as possible for Peggy's committed fans who have a lot of her CD's already (I have over 20), while making it an attractive purchase for somebody who just wants one big collection of Peggy's music.

5 out of 5 stars Even More Larger Amounts.......2005-08-16

This is my favourite of the 6 box singles sets. I already have most of these singles on cd that I got when they were first released. But the extra cuts here were the main reason I got this, most of which were available only on vinyl when originally released. True, the packaging itself is minimal. But I think the music really speaks for itself. You don't need a 25 page booklet or some rambling essay accompanying the box, as many artists do in order to justify charging a higher price. What you get here is 6 of Depeche Mode's best singles, with some truly great remixes that haven't aged a day since they were released. Timeless classics. And b-sides that are often as good as, and sometimes better than, their a-side. A few live tracks are thrown in to show you that Depeche Mode is a great live band ( yes, I know they rely on digital equipment, samplers, keyboards and prerecorded drum tracks, but Martin Gore is one hell of a guitar player, and Dave Gahan delivers some of his best vocal performances, especially on the cuts taken from the Devotional Tour.) In all, a great set, with a reasonable price. Another must have for the serious DM fan.

4 out of 5 stars Depeche Mode - 1990-93........2005-01-23

The fifth box set by Depeche Mode covers the period from 1990 to 1993. During this era, the Mode were multiplatinum superstars and enjoyed back-to-back hit albums "Violator" and "Songs and Faith of Devotion," the latter of which went Number One. Here, we get the singles "Policy of Truth," "World in My Eyes," "I Feel You," "Walking in My Shoes," "Condemnation," and "In Your Room," with the remixes and b-sides as they originally appeared on the 12 inch singles. I always liked the Mode's 1990 "Violator," but "Songs of Faith and Devotion" was an all too vain attempt to blend electronic music with grunge. Still, it yielded some decent results such as "In Your Room" and "I Feel You," and I also liked the b-side "My Joy" and the Adrenaline mix of the album cut "Higher Love." In my mind, the most successful of the six discs is "World in My Eyes," which has the excellent b-sides "Sea of Sin" and "Happiest Girl" and Jon Marsh's house remix of the title cut. In fact, all the remixes of "World in My Eyes" are true standouts, but Marsh's version is the true winner. While this period may not cover Depeche Mode at its most inspired, it's still a no-brainer of a purchase for diehard completists.

4 out of 5 stars You should know this..........2005-01-12

Musically and lirically the best box. Average cost per song, also the best: 56 tracks on 6 discs. Then, why not 5 stars? Let me explain you: the boxes are the lightest one: two can fit in a case designed for one regular case. No booklet, just a piece of paper as a sleeve. If you know that buying independently will cost the same, but you will receive a regular case (which also is stronger) with a complete sleeve, why not doing so? because in this box you get a lot more songs, more remixes, more live version. So finally, buy this.
Again, I live in Peru, southamerica, and it takes only 1 week to have them here. Thanks again Amazon!!!!! You have a greatest service.
