Editorial Reviews
Lucia Lie is a four peice band consisting of Guitar/vocals, Cello, Bass, and Drums. The band is based in Boston and all it's members currently attend Berklee College of Music. Rob Connolly is the songwriter; singing and playing rhythm acoustic guitar. Many of his melodies are somehow reminiscent of late 70's pop culture with influences rangeing from The Beatles to Frank Sinatra to Kurt Cobain. The lead instrument is the Cello played by Lorena Ruiz of Cincinatti, who has performed repeatedly with the Cincinatti Pops Orchestra. Together, Rob and Lorena form the core of the band. Several other musicians play in Lucia Lie at shows and on the album. Most noteworthy of these are drummer Blaise Lanzetta and bassist Stephen Yonkin, who have become fairly stable members. Lucia Lie recently released their self-titled debut Ep with good results. The band is currently performing in the Boston area and they are hard at work on their next full length release.

Few singers have done so much with so little. Tito Schipa's voice was notoriously short; he routinely transposed pieces with high tessitura and bottom notes were a stretch. But what a middle! The sheer sound of his lyric tenor can send shivers down your spine. This collection, comprising his complete recordings for the Gramophone and Pathe companies made between 1913 and 1921, demonstrates the vocal freedom and melting lyricism of the young Schipa. The selections are infused with charming elegance of timbre and phrasing. The songs are icing on a cake topped with such cherries as a ravishing "Cielo e mar," honeyed Tosca arias, and much else. Marston's superb transfers make these acoustic recordings sound like much later electricals. --Dan Davis

Dennis O'Neill is a wonderfully sensitive, intelligent singer--a tenor who varies his tone and delivery for each character. He also sings the music as written, with every dynamic shading in place. Yes, he manages high B-flats pianissimo without resorting to falsetto, and he also rises somewhat heroically to heavier moments. But there's a rub. The loud, high notes are a bit nasty--a slight wobble comes into the voice and a sense of strain is more than noticeable. His exquisite, piano beginning of "O paradiso" ("Oh land of dreams") from L'Africaine is only a sad memory when you hear the vaguely bawled high notes throughout. His "Reve" from Manon is lovely in its sustained peacefulness, and while he's very exciting in the big Act II duet from Ballo (with soprano Susan Bullock as a fine Amelia), there are always those unfortunate "big" notes to reckon with. Perhaps that's why the gorgeous Pearl Fishers duet, with baritone Anthony Michaels-Moore, ends the program so successfully. The soft notes are more prominent than the troublesome forte ones. Perhaps this is being too picky--O'Neill is a worthy singer, he makes these arias and scenes palatable in translation (even Alvaro's music from Forza is believable), and artistry like this is a pleasure to come across. --Robert Levine

Album Description
Lucia Lie's live presence has never been accurately captured on tape. Their specific breed of slow sad melodic rock seemed to be meant only for the stage until they recently teemed up with Presto! Stuios engineer AJ Mogis (Lullaby For the Working Class, Saddle Creek Records) to record their new release, "I'll wake you in the morning."On the new disk, Rob Connolly's songwriting takes a sharp turn for the dark side with dirty distorted guitars and screamed, yet still melodic, vocals. The rest of the band have also taken a giant leap from their self-titled debut EP (2002), with a stronger focus on the unrelenting rhythm section(Blaise Lanzetta on drums and Stephen Yonkin on bass) and more confident melodies displayed by the infamous lead cellist (Lorena Ruiz). Lucia Lie has come a long way from their roots in acoustic pop. With this much change over the span of two records, one has to wonder, what will come next?
