Wonderfully American.......2007-05-14

I've had a copy of this CD for years and love it. The power and optimism of the music is really quite remarkable... regardless of who or what is actually playing here. The arrangement of Swanee is light but rich with major chord trains like you just want to go marching around the room. And American In Paris leads you on a swaying, dischordy journey the deeper you go, as the narrative begins to trade delicacy for passion. (and I love renditions where you can hear the MUSIC and the instruments don't get in the way, like four-voice midi versions of Bach which reveal the eloquence).

When I listen to this CD now, and which is most surpring to me, I hear a profound pride in America - back "before." I play it when I have people over and we put burgers on the grill. This CD is the song of sitting in my back yard with the clouds blowing by and for the moment things feel OK.

"Before" - OK, there is no old perfect Amercia; but I'm thinking of the time before we learned to distill petroleum into toxic pollution, before pride meant vanity and thuggery, before hate-filled invective became public amusement, and before presidents went to war because it was good for business.

A Gersh-winner.......2007-01-07

George Gershwin had a long association with the mechanical device known as the player piano. At the age of ten, Gershwin used a neighbor's pianola to teach himself how to play, by very slowly pumping the foot pedal that advanced the hole-punched rolls, and placing his fingers on the depressed keys. His parents were so impressed by his abilities they enrolled the boy in formal piano studies when he turned 13. Thus, an American genius was born.

The existing films of Gershwin (who died of a brain tumor at age 38 in 1937) show him to be a virtuoso at his instrument. His 1924 acoustic recording of Rhapsody In Blue (with the Paul Whiteman orchestra) is further evidence of this. But no film or recording has what is contained within the album GERSHWIN PLAYS GERSHWIN: THE PIANO ROLLS, and that is-- full fidelity range.

The CD comes in a standard jewel case packaged in a heavy paper slipcover. Biographical liner notes are included along with details on the rolls. The earliest performance in this set is from 1916, made when Gershwin was an 18-year-old song plugger. My favorites here are "Swanee," from 1920, and "An American In Paris," from 1933, which is undoubtedly one of the last significant piano rolls ever made.

Gershwin's dynamic performances are not in the least obscured by the few extra notes added to the piano rolls (such practice was standard in those days). Listening to these recordings is like sitting next to this brilliant man, observing his fingers fly over the keys as he plays some of his best work.

Interesting... but I think I'd prefer a good Gershwin interpreter.......2006-05-14

Composers are not necessarily the best performers of their own work. A songwriter's songwriter like Jules Shear or Jimmy Webb comes to mind -- surely the best representations of their songs are on other artist's albums.

This album is charming in its own way -- a taste of the music and performance style of a bygone era. Someone complained that these rolls were edited. So what? I'm going to review the final product, now how it was made. Do you eat sausage? Ask not what's in it!

I like to listen to this CD in short bits -- a few songs at a time. For some reason I find it to be fatiguing if I listen for more than 20 minutes or so. I'm not absolutely sure why this is so. Possibly the meter is just a little too metronomic on many of the songs. This lends a "mechanical" quality to the performances.

Additionally, I felt that the dynamic range was restricted. The music does get louder and softer, because of the piano rolls themselves and because of the computer programming used to read the piano rolls -- the dynamics were deliberately adjusted by the record producers in some spots, if I read the liner notes correctly. And yet. And yet. Still these songs do not dynamically "breathe" fully in and out the way they ought to. I find this disappointing, but I think it has something to do with inherent limitations in piano roll recording technique. I'm guessing.

Taken for what it is, it is an interesting concept, and the sound quality is very pleasant. The performances are very good for piano rolls, but fall short of what a good interpreter could do. Take, for example, the Rhapsody in Blue from Woody Allen's Manhattan soundtrack. Listen specifically to the piano part -- the dynamics and variations in rhythm. This is not by any means the best performance of Rhapsody, but it is better than the Gershwin rolls.

Gershwin's playing overated.......2006-04-09

After I heard this cd I bought Gershwin plays Gershwin on the naxos label which arn't piano rolls. Any pianist can tell that many of these rolls are heavily edited and can't be played by a pianists with two hands. On the naxos album that has some of these same songs Gershwin's actual playing doesn't sound very good. Many of Gershwins contempories such as James P. Johnson, Eubie Blake, Luckey Roberts and even Zez Confrey were much better pianists than he was, however they didn't have his melodic gifts as a composer. I would recommend Artis Whodhouse's
transcriptions of Jelly Roll Morton's piano rolls (on the same label) instead because most of those are exactly how he played them and in my opinion Morton was a better musician in every way than Gershwin.

The jazzy Gershwin. What a CD!!!!!!!.......2006-02-23

I got this CD as a gift. I am all for the austrogerman post- romantic music and as imagined Gershwin is not my favourite composer. I know him from his best known works such as the 'Rhapsody", the 'American' and his great songs. This CD is a treasure as mentioned from other reviewers of this site. Gershwin full of passion, his music being jazzy to the very end and that great feeling you get after a great live performance is present all over the length of this 'treasure'. No question about the presence of the music. Not to be missed

Dionne at her best.......2007-05-16

This CD meet and beat my expectations. Miss Warwick presents a full range of her vocal talent. The price makes this CD an excellent value.

Great Stuff!.......2004-08-04

Dionne Warwick is one of those performers who has been around for so many years and has had so many hits, its impossible to find a compilation set with everything on it. (Why has no one put out a box set?) The fact that she's been on 3 labels complicates matters. This double CD is the best deal if you are looking for her early and middle career hits. I especially like this one as it has hard to find hits from her late 60's period like Odds and Ends, Paper Mache, Who's Gonna Love Me and Let Me Go To Him. Also covered is her middle Warner Bros. period which is also hard to find on her reissues. The Rhino compilation is also very good, but it ends too early. Pick up this and a best of her Arista years CD and you'll be all set. I know, its expensive, but Dionne is worth it! But if you only want one set of her Bacharach period and 70's hits, this is it!

Definitely definitive, at least for pre-'80s........2003-01-07

Great artist + great collection + great sound = 5 stars, no question. I'm a little confused as to why a collection made in the year 2000 with no indication about time range stops at the 1980s and therefore omits some nice '80s songs like "That's What Friends Are For" and "Déjà Vu," but since I was primarily interested in the 1960s-1970s, this album was absolutely unbeatable for me. In my opinion, this is the only Dionne Warwick pre-'80s greatest hits album worth owning: every other such album I could find was missing some songs I wanted. The songs appear to be in chronological order, and my favorites tended to be the active ones clustered at the end of the first CD, like "I Say A Little Prayer," "Do You Know The Way To San José," and the powerfully romantic "This Girl's In Love With You," derived from Bacharach's original "This Guy's In Love With You" (also good). The included booklet has some interesting history, though I was a tiny bit disappointed that the year of release and maybe peak chart position wasn't always shown for each song.

The Very Best Dionne Set You Could Own..........2000-06-07

I mainly purchased this CD set because of the rare inclusion of tracks from Dionne's Warner years during the 70's. This is the first CD release worldwide I am aware of that includes TRACK OF THE CAT, and this is the full album version from the album of of the same name. For those fans who never were able to obtain the two Austrialian CD's of JUST BEING MYSELF and THEN CAME YOU, some of those tracks are included here from those albums. The digital remastering done by Warner Germany is fabulous, as mostly all the songs have no hiss and sound better from many of their counterparts from around the world, including the US Rhino reissues. Another rare Scepter track included is ODDS AND ENDS, a personal favorite of non-album tracks. For a thorough overview of Dionne's 60's and 70's best in one collection, this is the one to own. It is worth the imported price.

This CD is one of many Time-Warner Warwick compilations. All of Dionne's biggest '60s hit are on this cheapy CD. It should be remastered and come with liner notes to explain the history of the songs. Seeing that it is a budget priced music CD, it can provide an affordable reference for youngsters not familiar with these oldies. It is high time that Dionne gets honored by The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame! VH1 Diva special in her honor?

I forgot how good the Bachrach music was! He was a master.
Of course, his music is accompanied by Dionne Warwick's beautiful voice. I only wish the recording of the CD was a little better - it sounds a little shallow so I put it on full bass to get a better sound.....

My very favorite Dionne Warwick hits compilation.......2006-08-22

Of all the wonderful Dionne Warwick compilations on the market, this is my favorite. All of the hits from the 60's are here in chronological order from her first hit, "Don't Make Me Over" and ending with her big 1969 hit, "I'll Never Fall In Love Again". In addition to the well known numbers, such as "Alfie", "I Say A Little Prayer", and "Walk On By", this CD contains Dionne's classic renditions of "A House Is Not A Home" and "You'll Never Get To Heaven". Also included is "I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself" which wasn't a big hit for Dionne, but should have been.

The only glaring omissions are the top 10 "This Girl's In Love With You" and Dionne's breathtakingly understated reading of the Jerry Butler hit "Make It Easy On Yourself". However, as both of these recordings are readily available on other compilations, there is no reason to avoid this CD.

If you are a Dionne Warwick fan, you will love this CD. If you have never experienced Dionne at her very best, this CD is a great place to start.

Unmistakable Part of The 60's Soundtrack.......2006-05-25

Dionne Warwick's music is so integral to popular music that we forget a couple of things. One thing we forget is that she recorded so many hits, to a large extent thanks to the great songwriting team of Burt Bacharach and Hal David. The second thing we forget is how good she is on these records. Her voice is strong, smooth, and clear, singing with passion, and a yearning that comes from deep within.

This collection captures all of her 60's and early 70's hits. It's well worth the purchase.

Two and a half hours of divine music...what more can I say?.......2006-02-27

Well, a lot! And since no one else has taken the trouble to review my favorite Adagios collection, I'm just gonna hafta go an' do it myself, won't I?

Starting with the stunningly gorgeous 'Jesu, joy of man's desiring' by Bach, this tape reels you in instantly. I'm not much of a fan of 'slow' and 'peaceful' music; I like the beautiful, sublime type that just makes you tingle all over whenever you hear it. (If only Canon in D was in this tape my cup of joy would overflow) Anyway, don't stop listening because Delibes' 'Flower Duet' comes soon after and it is the very meaning of divine. I listen to the taoe just to hear that one song over and over--but not too much, or it'll loose it's touch. This is a Opera duet (sorry, don't know technical terms, my passion is music, not the science of) sung by two women, for those of you out there like me who know practically nothing!! Gorgeous! Sugoi!! (That's Japanese)

Ahem.
The lovely 'Ombra mai fu' (which, I believe Elizabeth Bennet's sister horribly sings in the BBC Pride and Prejudice miniseries) is another memorable piece (hear the previews of these titles, please) and finally, William Vaughan's 'The Lark Ascending' a sixteen minute piece of violin heaven played so expertly you will see larks flying in circles about your head--or is that because your noggen got whacked?

Well, as for the second CD, it wasn't quite as memorable, but it's up against perfection, ok? Brahms' 'lullaby' (yes, THAT lullaby) is really sweet and of course there's 'Claire de Lune', a favorite of the Adagios collection, besides 'Sheep may safely graze' and 'Air on a G string'. (Honestly, does EVERY Adagios collection have that one? It's not even that wonderful.)

But what am I going on and on for?
BUY IT!!!!

A nearly Forgotten star.......2006-01-10

Leroy VanDyke has got to be one of the most underrated voices ever to grace the Country Music charts; and, like many of his generation, is nearly forgotten today. This album contains 13 tracks of all original recordings, inlcuding his two most famous (and instantly recognizable) songs: "Walk on By", and "The Auctioneer". Besides these two obvious inclusions, there are some simply amazing numbers included here: "Happy to be Unhappy" (really showcases his voice); "If a Woman Answers (Hang up the Phone)"; and "Big Man in a Big House". Along with the signature Leroy VanDyke numbers, his covers of "Faded Love" and "Heartaches by the Number" are excellent. This is an affordable CD, and one any traditional (real) Country Music fan should not be without.

For the hardcore country fan in the 50s, 60s and 70s, when a song was declared #1, it was a big deal. The fact is the song may have been #82 on the broader pop music chart where most record sales were reflected. Well, "Walk On By" by Leroy Van Dyke, in case you didn't know, is according to Billboard Magazine the #1 selling country song OF ALL TIME. It also was in the Top 5 on the Pop chart. That song, the kind you can play over and over again, is on this package along with its similarly-themed "If A Woman Answers (Hang Up The Phone)" and Leroy's other biggie "The Auctioneer". He also gives a good rendition of songs made popular by other singers. This is a package of music well worth the price. If you want only one set of Van Dyke songs, this is the one.

Greatest Hits Plus.......2001-07-03

In addition to having some of Van Dyke's biggest hits including "Walk On By", "Dim Dark Corner", etc., this also includes some other worthy album cuts from his days at Mercury including country standard "Heartaches By The Number" as well as the Pat Boone chestnut "Love Letters In The Sand".

Van Dyke's great voice was capable of taking songs that weren't his own & making them anew for him all over again. A fine example of this is the demo version of "Fire Ball Mail" in which he absolutely cooks.

not enough Galway.......2003-10-02

There are only four songs with James Galway. The way this recording is presented is misleading and buyers should be aware that this is NOT a joint effort between these two great artists.. I was totally disappointed. I think Henry Mancini is wonderful but was expecting to hear a collaboration. So if you're looking for flute music this isn't it. However it's a great collecton of Henry Mancini's work.

Too Good to Last.......2000-03-03

I heard this on PBS. Galway and Mancini may be two of the most talented musicians of our century. Galway for his complete mastery of the flute and Mancini for his ability to arrange , produce and in this instance direct the orchestra while Galway performs. They do several duets of a comical nature as well. This is important because it is one of Mancini's last efforts prior to his unfortunate passing.

The picture.......2006-12-11

I haven't purchased the CD but the picture of the inside of a church on the cover is not of a British church, like one would assume since it says its a recording of British choirs. This picture is of Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Just thought i'd let you know. I'll be honest; I'm one to judge things by it's cover and if the company took such care to choose a 'British' church for their British choir CD, I'm willing to bet the music is equally well selected... I'm being sarcastic. But I gave the product 5 stars because I didn't want to hurt its ratings just because i'm cynical. But check out the church if you're ever in Montreal, it's truly beautiful... here I'm not being sarcastic.

I find these renditions by Sir John Barbirolli totally beguiling. He brings warmth and deep sincerity to everything he portrays here. One surely senses the great love he had for Delius' music. Much of the charm wrought by the conductor has to do with the turn of various phrases. Time and again he caresses melodies. Simultaneously, he conveys a feeling of simple joyousness. Hear the Intermezzo from Fennimore and Gerda; The Walk to the Paradise Garden; the Irmelin Prelude, with its pastoral beauty; La Calinda, where one feels serenaded in a happy, carefree manner. A Song Before Sunrise weaves a similar pattern. In addition, there's that wonderful exotic quality that here and there echoes in Delius' music. Brigg Fair seems to have both this at some moments and yet a pleasing, homespun British character during other moments. Sometimes too there is a nostalgic yearning. In this vein, one can only relax and drink in the expressive portrait of Late Swallows. And what about the playful, carefree In a Summer Garden or the imposing, spiritual folk picture, Appalachia ? In so many ways, both this sensitive composer and conductor reach out to touch the life-affirming soul. How can one not be soothed and refreshed by what is offered here ? If there's anything missing, perhaps it's the composer's Summer Evening, another of his memorable pieces. A wonderful collection, and a source of inspiration. By the way, I find Barbirolli's Delius more enjoyable than Beecham's.

This is one of my favorite classical albums. I find myself listening to it very frequently. Of particular enjoyment is disc two featuring beautiful and stirring works by Delius and Elgar. This is a most relaxing and refreshing recording that will wonderfully and continually soothe the mind and soul!
