Product Description

Southwest was definitely the right direction for Eric Tingstad to turn in discovering a new musical path. Tingstad is best known as the guitar half of his duo with oboist and ocarina player Nancy Rumbel. They've been plying their pastoral chamber music since the mid 1980s, but Tingstad clearly had some other sounds in mind when he went southwest. From the opening track, "Sunrise at Four Corners", it's obvious this isn't another acoustic chamber work as Terry Lauber's pedal steel articulates an open plains melody. While there are echoes of old country rock bands like Poco and New Riders of the Purple Sage, Tingstad's southwestern chamber music also embraces native sounds. "Voices of the Ancient Ones" has native chants from Petra Stahl and the native flutes of Gary Stroutsos creating canyon echoes. Tingstad mixes flat-picking guitar and fingerstyle on this disc, with tunes like "The Last Caballero" sounding like an old folk tune, but with a resonance that comes from glorified memory, making it feel bigger, fuller, and richer than the original probably ever was. Nancy Rumbel hasn't been left behind. She plays on several tracks, her oboe articulating the soulful refrain of "Kiva" against Stahl's chants. The pedal steel anchors this album in country, but this ain't line dances and spilled beer. Tingstad has taken a country sound, touched it with his chamber music aesthetic, and added just enough trail dust to make it earthy and real. -John Diliberto, 2007.

4 out of 5 stars From Seattle to Santa Fe... A Bold Outing for Mr. T: Serious and Peaceful........2007-06-16

I bought this CD after hearing the haunting "Voices of the Ancient Ones" on Echoes' 2007 Earth Day broadcast. I was intrigued by the chanting (Petra Stahl) as it entered and receded at points in the melody, by the tasty bass work (Garey Shelton) and the penetrating and mournful pedal steel (Terry Lauber). When I heard after the set that the artist was Eric Tingstad, I about fell out of my skin. "Voices" is the best and most "complete" piece on this CD, a perfect composition where the whole is greater than the sum of the parts (all recorded in different studios and later mixed). Close runners-up are "Sunrise at Four Corners" (builds from a lazy pedal steel intro to a great, bass/percussion driven groove, but has a disappointing fade-out ending which detracts from the tune's strong "statement"); "Walking in Two Worlds" (has a Celtic doppelganger to the moody Southwestern persona)and "Where the Moon Stood Still" (a delicate piece that reminds me of Ansel Adams' famous photo, "Moonrise, Hernandez, New Mexico" (go see [...]).

Why four, instead of five, stars? Because I found "The Last Caballero" and "Trails End" both somewhat corny and predictable; and "Kiva (Where the Wind Blows)" is just a go-nowhere clunker, despite Nancy Rumbel's contribution. I've listened to the CD half a dozen times in the last month and am waiting for these tunes to reach out and grab me. I'll continue to play it (and recommend it).

The musicians on this CD are all top flight. Garey Shelton's bass is the perfect bottom for the atmosphere of "Southwest." But Terry Lauber "steels" the show and truly gives this CD its secret ingredient.

Bottom line: buy the disc, kick back and drag Edward Abbey's "Desert Solitaire" off the shelf and re-read the essays "Cowboys and Indians (parts I and II)". Better yet, throw "Southwest" in the dashboard CD player and go for a long, lazy drive in the pre-dawn and watch the sun come up in a quiet place. (Also good for working late at the office and you're the only one in the building.)

5 out of 5 stars No "four cornered" country back-beats here.......2007-03-14

Given that Southwest is the first solo CD that Eric Tingstad has released in over 10 years, a question that might immediately come to mind is "What sets the CD apart from the standard Tingstad and Rumbel fair?"

The instrumentation obviously is different, with Rumbel appearing only on two tracks (which nevertheless are among the highlights of the CD). Here, the oboist is replaced as Tingstad's melodic foil usually by the pedal steel guitar of Terry Lauber or by the overdubbed guitar lines of Tingstad himself. But perhaps the overriding characteristic that sets Southwest apart from the Tingstad and Rumbel oeuvre is the percussion driven-ness of the CD.

Tingstad admits in the liner notes that he composed most of the tunes on a Native American frame drum, and that is no surprise, given that drums and percussion musically define nearly each tune. Whether it's various hand percussions or full drum kit, it's the infective beats that get under your skin and set the "sense of place" atmosphere of each track.

Doing Tingstad's bidding on frame and udu drums was Tim Miller, while TJ Morris sets driving beats on drum kit and various other percussion. The drum-kit work of Morris, especially, is largely responsible for making Southwest surely the most rhythmically engaging project of Tingstad's career. No "four cornered" country back-beats here.

Album Description

Rivers flowing through spectacular canyon landscapes, rich colorful soils, and seemingly barren deserts are just a few of the powerful images evoked by the southwest a world unto its own. The extreme diversity of the climate and terrain is even more awe-inspiring when you include the voices of the region. Featuring a harmonious array of species and an enchanting original musical score, this suite captures the magic of the southwest.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible Desert Music.......2000-07-18

This album is such a relaxing piece of music. I have yet to find any other piece of music more appealing than this! I work with young children and when it's time for them to calm down and settle down to their work, I put this album on and the children naturally become quiet and peace- ful. This music has such a natural calming effect on anyone! It's my very favorite album in this style of music. I wish I could find more music similar to this.

        4 out of 5 stars A GEM FROM THE PRINCESS THEATRE . . . .......2005-09-07

I agree with Mr. Behrens that this recording is a "must" for anyone serious about the American musical theatre, but I found the whole thing a trifle boring. (I would have given it 3 stars, but I was worried about turning people off.) The performances are splendid, and the original orchestrations for 10 pieces are a delight to hear. Upon hearing the overture, you might think you're listening to a superb digital restoration of an early 1900's recording. It's a gas.

Mr. Behrens states that the score contains neither a hit nor a miss and is an "improvement on the bubbleheaded competition," but the operettas of Sigmund Romberg, Rudolph Friml, Victor Herbert, et.al, were overflowing with far better songs than Jerome Kern would write for this or any other Princess Theatre Show. Many of the lyrics for "Eddie" are pretty inane, typical for the time, however. Kern wrote a much better score two years later for "Leave It to Jane" (1917), lyrics provided by long time collaborator P.G. Wodehouse. (A wonderful recording of the 1958 revival of "Jane" is available on AEI Records.) With Lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein, II, Jerome Kern wrote "Show Boat" in 1927, giving us the first truly great American musical. He also contributed some of Hollywood's most memorable songs, including "A Fine Romance," "The Way You Look Tonight," and "The Last Time I Saw Paris."

5 out of 5 stars A musical as it used to be.......1999-10-24

My fellow reviewer from Monterey Mass. hit the nail on the head. Though not as good as some of the "Princess Theater" shows to come ("Oh, Boy," "Oh, Lady, Lady," and the rest--this musical is quite an improvement on the bubbleheaded competition it had not only in its own time but long after it. It is also a relief from the "musical play" that replaced the musical comedy. Not a single hit song and not a single poor one in the whole show that was a pioneer of the great "integrated" shows to come, not the least of which would be Kern's own "Show Boat." This is a must for every serious collection of Broadway shows.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful version of a charming show.......1998-09-08

5 out of 5 stars Five stars for the Raff!.......2005-07-06

Joachim Raff is the Rodney Dangerfield of classical music -- he don't get no respect. But he should! Raff, who was productive in the era from about 1855 to 1880, was considered a titan in his time but was eventually eclipsed by Brahms and Wagner. A master orchestrator and lyricist, with a genius for melody, Raff is the epitome of the Romantic composer -- beautiful works, well-wrought, intended to please. There is no sturm und drang, but he will bring a smile to your face and leave you humming along.

The Ponti/Kapp recording of the Piano Concerto is energetic, appropriately lyrical in the slow movement, rollicking in the heroic finale. Raff was a student of Liszt and the concerto is reminiscent of Liszt's own, but is more melodious and less bombastic (though it has its share of that.) I find Raff to be superior to Liszt in his orchestral works (indeed, Raff, as an employee of Liszt's, orchestrated some of Liszt's tone poems); the Raff concerto is the sort of thing you listen to and say, "Why isn't that performed more often?" Ponti was the pioneer in making sure it was performed, and this recording, albeit a couple of decades old, still has good sound and a vibrant polish undimmed by time (or by Vox's sometime reputation for tinny sound).

If you're bitten by the Raff bug after this, may I suggest a few symphonies to try?: No. 3, Im Walde; No. 5, Lenore, No. 8, Sounds of Spring. Raff is easily the equal of any number of better-known Romantics such as Liszt, Saint Saens, Rimsky-Korsakov, Smetana, and Bruch. His reputation is gradually being restored, and Ponti has done his part.

(Also of interest in the set is the Stavenhagen concerto, written by a virtuoso pianist of Liszt's day. A pleasant bonus!)

5 out of 5 stars A must in your collection.......2004-04-17

Let`s talk about Liszt^s maldition. Ponti creates a dark atmosphere without making fireworks.
In Bronsart`s concerto the piano flies and evokes us a true landscape of caleidoscopic images. It`s played with conviction and majesty. The last movement like many endings of Brahms`works concludes with gipsy tunes. In the romantic tradition, austere and honest.
But Raff`s concert steals the show. What Ponti makes with these concert is melting with the score. The piano is played with such kind of histamina and also passion without loosing the "savoir vivre". It`s a jubilee a celebration of life. Absolutely radiant. And in the finale Ponti makes a statement of elegant bravura and happy resolution. Raff was undoubtly not only a virtuoso but a gentleman drowned by the nature`s love so representative of the pures romantic tradition. In this sense Raff seems anticipate the echoes of Debussy`s preludes. In fact, he was a Liszt`s pupil but creating and suggesting ; and that`s the clue who carries to the musical impressionism. Ponti , in this sense attacks the work having this concept in his mind.
Obviously, Raff is not at Schumann`s level, but that isn`t a sin. Raff altogether Mozart loves the life.
The orchestra an Mr. Ponti, that evening were absolutely convinced and engaged with this concert. The rapport is inusual.
The rest of the CD is worthy and you`ll be rewarded ever.

        4 out of 5 stars Raff-Ponti Rave.......2000-09-20

Other than the Liszt and the Raff, the other concertos on this compilation are mostly of historic interest, ranging in aesthetic value from mediocre to pretty poor--the Mosonyi especially seems to give one an idea of what a composer of limited talent and awareness would produce back in the depths of the 19C.--BUT the Raff Concerto is brilliant-a bit slick, but enormous fun. It is like a Germanic, somewhat finer Saint-Saens 2nd Piano Concerto. Ponti is absolutely scintillating--it is a wonder that he has not been asked to travel round the world concert halls engaging audiences with this highly entertaining concerto. The last movement is particularly irresistible. I would give this set 5 stars if it only contained the Raff and the Liszt!

5 out of 5 stars A FEAST OF FORGOTTEN DELIGHTS!.......1999-09-27

This is, arguably, the best of the entire series of VOX's worthy "The Romantic Piano Concerto" CDs. This set has the strongest "batting order" of any of them, leading off with Joachim Raff's delightful c minor concerto. This work, superbly played by the brilliant Michael Ponti, is a real find. It is a tuneful virtuoso romp, well orchestrated and full of fire works. I'll take this concerto over Grieg's hackneyed a minor any day. As the commercials used to say "but wait, there's more!" The set (devoted to the efforts of Liszt pupils and associates) also has wonderful concerti by Eugene D'Albert, Bernard Stavenhagen, Hans Von Bronsart, Mihaly Mosanyi, as well as Liszt himself (the early Malediction for Piano and Strings). Any piece on these CDs sounds like Beethoven compared to anything by a no talent hack like Elliott Carter! These CDs are highly recommended, especially at this price.

E-40 and B-Legit collaborated with some of the heavyhitters of the industry with the height of Sick Wid It Records success by the release of Southwest Riders. The new recruits, A-1, started the entire compilation off with the strong Mob style track "Represent" and newcomer to the majors Komacauszy on "Evil Ways" featuring The Lost Mob. W.C. gave his best on the C-walking, gangster "Walk With Me". The other half of the group Illegal, Mr. Malik (Hershey Loc) flowed well over "Big Bank". "...No need for the ambulance..." when 3X Krazy's fast orthodox flow on "Call The Coroner". Suga T. & Conscious Daughters are the only females to represent well on "Bad Bitches". Tela made it clear with his player type lyrics on "Dis Year". The standout for disc #2 is "Hiside" by UGK with a slow riding grooves with a funky guitar lick. Memphis' groups Three 6 Mafia and Eightball & MJG put a good foot forward. There's thirty tracks on here and there's a lot on here to check out. Almost a classic compilation failed where some artists didn't give that one needed good song for this album. This release is Sick Wid It.

        4 out of 5 stars ---------------------------------------------.......1999-10-31

If I could I would rate this album 4.5 starts, since 5 means a perfect album. Unlike many double CD albums, SouthWest Riders is an album packed with many many tight songs while the minority is weak songs. Out of 28 songs maybe 5or 6 aren't that worth listening to. The rest is just bangin'! This album is a compliation combining rappers from the West and The South. Awsome rappers like D-Shot, W.C., UGK, Eightball, MJG, 3X Krazy, Celly Cel, Tela, A-1, Mossie, E-40, B-Legit, Richie Rich and many mnay more drop some real bombs. This album is all hardcore, no RnB flava on it and it gives as some real gangsta rap to ride to. I'd like to thank Sick Wid it Record for this album.
