Some songs define moments in our lives we will never forget. They're songs that years later can evoke the sights, sounds, and even smells of the time we first heard them. "Kiss Me," the red-hot, irresistible single from this self-titled release, will probably be one of those songs for the many who've by now experienced its charms. The culprits? A trio of youthful central Texans, by way of Nashville, called Sixpence None the Richer. On the rest of this Grammy-nominated gem, Sixpence serve an airy blend of Abra Moore-meets-Sundays acoustic pop. It's beautifully rich and constantly augmented by Leigh Nash's earthy vocals, Matt Slocum's songwriting genius, and steady rhythms from Dale Baker. Like Jars of Clay, Sixpence have "raised the bar" for the rest of late-'90s contemporary Christian music. --Michael Lyttle

If you really want to know where Sixpence None the Richer has been the past two years, you have two choices. You can spend 15 minutes reading the oh-so-finely crafted story that graces the cover of this very magazine, or you can spend 15 minutes (give or take a few seconds) listening to the first three tracks on the band's new release, its self-titled debut on Steve Taylor's new label.

Those songs, especially "Anything" and "The Waiting Room," possess a seamless segue and a common denominator of being the quietest indictment of the music industry ever to be burned into a compact disc.

If you've followed Sixpence's saga over the past couple of years, you know of the struggles and travails the band experienced in trying to get out of its previous record deal. These two songs force you to come to grips with the fact that making music isn't always fun and games, and the business can rip relationships apart.

If there's anything positive to come out of the band's forced hiatus from the studio, it manifests itself in experience with their instruments and ideas. Sixpence None the Richer is a much deeper, more focused recording than '95's This Beautiful Mess, with Leigh Nash wielding a much more confident vocal, Dale Baker providing a fascinating percussive backdrop to the delicate songs, and guitarist/songwriter/arranger Matt Slocum getting to realize his ideas with intricate strings weaving in with his pop guitar riffs.

New label honcho Taylor also wears the hat of producer for this project, providing a sensitive touch on the boards for a band that is light-years stylistically from his past production credits, be it his own work, Newsboys or Guardian. He (and engineer Russ Long) treats Nash's vocals with the proper respect and care, as well as allowing Slocum to experiment sonically.

To best experience Sixpence None the Richer, light a couple of candles, put the record on your stereo and darken the room. Let the quiet sonic textures wash over you, and near the end of the album's 48 minutes, stare at the candle. You'll see (allegorically, at least) what the band Sixpence None the Richer is now seeing: the light at the end of a very dark time. -- Lucas W. Hendrickson (c) 1997 CCM Communications, Inc.

It may seem curious to the casual music observer that Texas-based pop band Sixpence None The Richer, who had one big hit in "Kiss Me" and one semi-hit with their version of the La's "There She Goes" would have enough material to release a greatest hits collection in full album form as opposed to, say, an EP. While both tracks are included here ("Kiss Me", in fact, shows up twice), other songs culled from the band's archive, as well as contributions from assorted compilations, provide plenty more listening pleasure for Sixpence fans as Leigh Nash's sleepy vocals complement catchy hook-driven melodies in slickly produced studio arrangements. Some of the brighter spots on the record are actually covers of other artists' greatest hits that force Sixpence None The Richer out of their comfort zone and into more intriguing territory, such as on Crowded House's "Don't Dream It's Over" and ABBA's "Dancing Queen". Three previously unreleased songs are also included. --John Moe

Album Description

Over the past 10 years, Sixpence None The Richer has left its indelible mark not only on Christian music, but also the culture at large. This 18-song collection accomplishes this by including out-of-print fan favorites from their early years, well-known songs from many compilation proejcts and soundtracks, and their recent breakthrough radio hits, plus 3 new songs never heard before! Until now, one would have had to buy 11 different albums to collect all the songs in this package. This collection offers everything a Sixpence fan would want to own, all in one package for the first time ever!

5 out of 5 stars greatest hits.......2007-03-20

It might be worth just buying their albums one by one as most of the songs are good and you wouldn't want to buy this and then double back later. Matt's guitarwork has the power to make me happy no matter what, it's articulated so well. The vocals are very smooth and pretty and fun. The guitar in "us" can stay in my head for days. There's so much more than kiss me, these people know what their doing, no "one hit wonder".

4 out of 5 stars A pretty voice.......2007-03-11

I love this CD. Though I am not a regular buyer of pop groups I couldn't help but get this one.
I listen to it when I get a tad grumpy and it brings me back to a happy place. Her voice is so pretty it couldn't do anything else.
Love all the covers.

Leigh Nash has just an amazing voice. You'll enjoy this Best Of!

5 out of 5 stars Very good CD, I recommend it to any serious Pop music collector!.......2007-01-04

This CD has a "catch": the surprisingly beautiful voice of Leigh Nash.

I am usually reluctant to hits covers, but in this case I would suggest to give a special try to SNTR performance of The La's "There She Goes", Crowded House's superhit "Don't Dream It's Over", and even Abba's "Dancing Queen". Special mention to that wonderful tune titled "Kiss Me". Leigh Nash's voice reinvents these songs and provides a new dimension to the meaning of "Cover version".

Believe me... this CD is a serious improvement for your music collection!

4 out of 5 stars A Fine Compilation!.......2006-11-10

Six Pence None the Richer only recorded four regular albums before they disbanded around 2004. This compilation covers their whole career and features all their biggest hits as well as rarities and previously unreleased tracks.

From their commercial breakthrough third album the two great singles "Kiss Me" and "There She Goes Again" are logical choices, but also a few of the strongest album-tracks also would have been nice inclusions.

It's almost the same with their equally strong final album, where the two hit-singles "Breathe Your Name" and the outstanding cover of Neil Finn's "Don't Dream it's Over" are featured along with the fine acoustic album track "Melody of You".

A few tracks come from hard to find soundtracks etc. and among these their cover of Brian Wilson's "I Just Wasn't Made for These Times" stand out. Compared to the Beach Boys' own Pet Sounds version, which I always found sounded slightly unfinished, this new version is by far the strongest.

Also "The Ground You Shook" and "I Need Love" are great non-album tracks that any fan of the band would like to have.

I'm not familiar with their first two albums, but judges from the tracks included hear the second album "This Beautiful Mess" seems to have a harder approach than their other records.

A fine compilation, though I would have preferred the Japanese version of "Kiss Me" exchanged with one or two of their fine album tracks.

I found Leigh Nash to be a very easy to listen to vocal artist. Her style of music is a little different than others and is all her own. It is easy to listen to and relaxing.

4 out of 5 stars With skill and grace Leigh has earned her stripes as a solo artist.......2007-04-17

You're probably wondering what happened to the former lead singer of Sixpence None the Richer. Leigh Nash, who's been singing since she was twelve, formed the band with a fellow classmate while they were still in high school. She says, "It was such an emotional process for me when the band broke up. Motherhood came pretty fast after that, and I started writing a ton about my son. I just found that there was a much deeper well within me than there had been before."

Leigh says, "My songs on Blue on Blue were not intentionally centered on any one concept, but I admit my newfound maternity was a source of inspiration." Her music is less melancholy now that she's on her own, and more piano driven (some of the intros remind me of George Winston) which goes well with Leigh's airy voice. In fact, any other instrumentation is minimal.

With many years of performing under her belt, this doesn't sound like her first solo album. Not with tracks like "Cloud Nine", probably the most interesting piece, which best displays her vocal style (just picture yourself at a beach party for this number). "More of It" is the most reminiscent of her Sixpence roots, which her loyal listeners will love. She co-wrote the smooth "Between the Lines" and "Along the Wall" with Canadian producer, Pierre Marchand, Sarah McLachlan, and Rufus Wainwright last winter in Montreal (think Felicity tv show music). The final touch is a sweet lullaby "Just a Little" which Leigh wrote for her son, Henry. Blue on Blue is a bit more poppish than the albums she did with Sixpence, but this cd reveals Nash's pretty voice better than Sixpence did. It may not dish out hits like "Kiss Me" and "There She Goes", but treading new ground is never an easy feat. With skill and grace Leigh has earned her stripes as a solo artist. Blue on Blue is sure to win her many new fans.

3 out of 5 stars One Reviewer Said "Absolutely Divine"; I See A Light Under A Heavy Basket.......2007-04-12

I remember seeing Six Pence None The Richer on Regis and Kelly (or was it still Kathy Lee at that time? I forget). Regis asked Matt Slocum and Leigh Nash the meaning of the name of the band. Matt said it was taken from C. S. Lewis' "Mere Christianity", and recommended everyone check it out. I don't see this pointing to Christianity in Leigh's album.

Years before "Kiss Me" hit the charts, Sixpence was on the Christian charts. But Leigh's project gives no hint of Christianity. One project I reviewed by Jessie Daniels had vague lyrics that could be taken either as Christian or secular, though her faith was evident in the liner notes and gratitude list. Leigh's lyrics have no hint of her faith. Some have references to spiritual topics like heaven and angels but the lyrics of those songs clearly are not focusing on Christianity but on romantic love.

I gave this three stars. I thought of giving it four based on the music end; if you like the musical style of Sixpence, you will enjoy this as well. This is a good quality project on the artistic end. However, I thought of only giving this one or two stars because of how disappointed I am with the lyrics.

I'm not even going to recommend any of the tracks of this project.

5 out of 5 stars Blue on Blue.......2007-03-09

Catchy tunes written by Leigh Nash herself.....something of a sophmoric effort for her. This album deserved to be better promoted as every song could have been a pop hit. If you like her voice, you'll LOVE this one!!

5 out of 5 stars Timeless.......2007-03-01

I have had this album since it first came out (not the reissue with "There She Goes" on it; the first pressing) and it has withstood ten years of evolving musical tastes, the loss of my religion, a half-dozen breakups and several localized catastrophes. Pure sonic joy. Leigh Nash's voice is irresistable. Bonus points for serving as my stepping-stone to the Cranberries and Over the Rhine.

4 out of 5 stars A Little Folk and a Little Pop!.......2006-11-23

This was the big breakthough album of Six Pence None the Richer. Containing the two big hit-singles "Kiss Me" and "There She Goes Again" the album obviously had good chances of making it.

The opening track "We Have Forgotten" was the first track that stirred my attention; sounding very folkish I was very certain that this was a new British folk-act - later when checking the band out on the internet I found out I was wrong and that this was really and American band led by singer Leigh Nash and songwriter/guitarist Matt Slocum.

The extremely catchy and commercial "There She Goes Again" was the song that convinced me that this band was worth seeking out - a little Blondie, a little of the Cardigans but the voice of lead singer Leigh Nash also had something unique about it. "There She Goes Again" was actually a cover of a song recorded by the La's, which is also great, but for me this version is The version.

Besides the commercial "Kiss Me" other tracks that deserve being brought forward are two other folkish tunes "Anything" and "Easy to Ignore" ( featuring a great violin part ).

Towards the end the album loses a little steam, and some songs seem a little pale compared to the great song in the first half of the album.

Still a great album that puts itself somewhere between folk and pop.

5 out of 5 stars delightful.......2006-07-06

Actually I haven't bought this CD, but I just happened to hear the song "There she goes" on a low quality WMA stream from the Internet.
I just love the "There she goes" song.
I sang along for hours and hours with my male, shrieking voice...and it sorta made my day (happend to be alone at home and had nothing to do hehe)...

1 out of 5 stars This is annoying......so very annoying........No wonder the second half of the the 90's sucked musically.......2006-05-18

This is disgusting. They are about as annoying as The Cranberries, and the only thing they have going for them is their faith. Other than that I probably wouldn't bother writing anything positive. The second half of the 90's sucked musically, and this is one of the reasons why. "Kiss Me" is a drab love song that annoys not appeals. "There She Goes" is a cover of a faceless band that did this on the remake of "The Parent Trap", or is it the other way around....either way it stinks. I usually don't write anything bad about Christian music, but this is one exception as this is just blah.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2006-04-21

This is my favorite of the CDs I've bought from online sources such as EBAY. I only paid $3.00 for it, but I would buy their new CD at full price if it is anything like this one. I loved it.

Pushing aside broken relationships in both their professional and personal lives in the last five years, members of Sixpence None the Richer are probably more relieved than anyone else to finally see the arrival of Divine Discontent. Yet true art seems to take its purest form when forged through turmoil, and this much-anticipated release is as pure as solid gold. The 12 tracks featured here are nothing short of a brilliant pop tapestry woven through Leigh Nash's airy and vibrant vocals and songwriter Matt Slocum's finely textured guitar work. While fans of "Kiss Me" will relate to the upbeat "Tonight" and "Breathe Your Name," no one should mistake the upbeat pop for shallowness. In fact, tracks like "Down and Out of Time," "Paralyzed," and "I've Been Waiting" display a rich lyrical depth centered on the human experience. Throughout Divine, Slocum showcases a prowess for offsetting Nash's lilting melodies against haunting, minor key choruses, creating a bittersweet melancholy that lingers well after each song. Perhaps the band does this no better than in the ending track, "A Million Parachutes," which captures that dull ache of longing for friends from afar. It's a feeling well known to those Sixpence fans who have waited five long years for this release. The wait was well worth it. --Michael Lyttle

A CD that needed more Leigh Nash's imagination and spiritually. I reaally wanted to love this CD, but I could not. I liked the earlier recordings.
If you love SNIR, buy their greatest hits and praise God!

5 out of 5 stars A Relaxing And Uplifting Pop/Alternative Album.......2006-12-14

I remember when Sixpence None The Richer first came out. In fact, the first single had a male vocalist (possibly Matt Slocum). I always enjoyed Leigh Nash's vocals. I remember seeing them on "Regis and Kelly" (maybe Kathi Lee was still there at that point, though I don't remember). Regis asked about where their name came from, and Slocum mentioned it was taken from C. S. Lewis' classic book "Mere Christianity" and recommended everybody read it.

Sixpence is a Christian band, but started crossing over in the late '90's with the single "Kiss Me." This project follows in the same vein. A high point is the excellent cover of Crowded House's "Don't Dream It's Over". I always wondered if this song had a Christian message, or if not directly, one that appeals to Christians, and Sixpence's recording reinforces my point.

Sometimes when a Christian artist crosses over, the songs become more secular, so the artist fits in with the lost. From this project, Sixpence has avoided this compromise. There are several songs that truly minister on this project.

Musically, this group fits into the alternative/pop vein. Over all, this is relaxing, without a lot of edge (even "Don't Dream It's Over" has a little less edge guitar wise than the original version by Crowded House). I found it soothing and uplifting.

Besides "Don't Dream It's Over", other good tracks include "Breathe Your Name", "Paralyzed", "I've Been Waiting", and "Eyes Wide Open."

4 out of 5 stars A Greatly Missed Band!.......2006-11-04

Six Pence None the Richer's final album ( sadly, so it seems ) "Divine Discontent" was delayed a couple of years due to problems with their label before it was final released in 2002. It was the follow-up to their self-titled and much-acclaimed third album featuring the big hits "Kiss Me" and "There She Goes Again".

Though this album may be slightly more commercial and mainstream, the recipe is more or less the same; well-crafted songs, brilliant arrangements and production, and not least the moving vocals of Leigh Nash.

This album gave the band two more hits with "Don't Dream It's Over" written by Neil Finn and guitarist and songwriter Matt Slocum's own "Breathe Your Name".

Though the album does have any weak tracks other songs that deserve being brought forward are the beautiful rock ballad "I've Been Waiting" and the complex "Eyes Wide Open" - Paul McCartney or Emitt Rhodes inspiration?

The charming acoustic "Melody of You" also has a great deal of Paul McCartney feel to it.

The final track "Million Parachutes" is another rock ballad that leaves you back regretting that this great band decided to disband so soon - it seems they had much more to offer!

5 out of 5 stars Despair shattered by hope.......2006-10-18

I just bought this CD and it hasn't left my player since. I'm at least 4 years too late in doing so-yes it is that good! I have 2 theories-if these songs were written pre-9/11/01, then, then Sixpence has the gift of prophecy. If post 9/11, they have the gift of reflecting America in mourning. This album is so of it's time. Confusion, remorse, shame and fear seem to grip these songs-occasionally the sun breaks through, and it is so beautiful. There is a song for artists on this album too, which I love. I have another theory that 6pence knew they would break up soon. I think they wanted to make this a masterpiece while they still could. And they did. Now, keep in mind that Leigh's voice is complex and not everyone will get it. Personally, I enjoy the fact that she will not bend to stylizations of her voice. It is what it is. She can't do it all. But combine the right song, and the brilliant acoustic guitar here with her, and you will be transformed somehow. What a great work this is. They will be remembered!

Based on the concept of healing in times of crisis, Streams combines the talents of contemporary Christian music heavy hitters and the Irish Film Orchestra (who contribute a lavish orchestral suite) in an anthem of comfort for the weary, the hurting, and the spiritually impoverished. From Cindy Morgan's broken-voiced lamentation on "Job" to Chris Rodriguez's plea on "Sanctuary," Streams speaks directly to Christians in times of need, a subject not oft explored in CCM. Brighter territory is surveyed on Sixpence None the Richer's inspirational pop gem "Breathe" and on Jaci Velasquez's breathily angelic rendering of the Michelle Tumes-penned "I Will Rest in You." Intriguing pairings include Jon Anderson of Yes with modern-day soldiers of faith 4Him, Amy Grant's supporting tour of duty on the Delirious-led "Find Me in the River," and a slightly revised version of Peter Gabriel's "Don't Give Up," which features a duet by Irish songbird Maire Brennan and Michael McDonald of the Doobie Brothers. --Paige La Grone

5 out of 5 stars This CD is a blessing .......2007-03-20

My younger brother gave this CD to me as a gift years ago and I have passed it on to both my older siblings during difficult times in their lives. The song "Job" is both poignant and worshipful. "All I need " is also so beautifully done... proclaiming that "the only thing I need I already have...". The last couple of instrumental songs are so soothing and restful. I would highly recommend to anyone, but particularly those who find themselves in a place of pain and suffering. YOU WILL BE BLESSED!

5 out of 5 stars Best of All Time?.......2006-10-10

This album is within my top 3 overall Christian albums of all time. Although it made CCM's Top 100 Albums of All Time, it didn't place as well as it deserves.

The album is so hauntingly good, it'll take your breath away. Maire Brennan and Michael MacDonald in "Don't Give Up" is encouraging at deep levels of the soul. 4Him and Jon Anderson on "The Only Thing I Need" can make a grown man cry. Breathe from Sixpence None the Richer reminds us of the breath of the Spirit sustaining life all around us.

None of the songs are fluff. They all acknowledge the dirty difficultness of life. There is no white washing of the hurt and pain we all have to come to terms with. But in the songs, as vast as the ocean, we hear of abiding, towering strength, hope and trust that, in the end, everything will be made all right again.

5 out of 5 stars Best of the Best.......2006-01-18

I have to agree with the person who wrote the first review. I am a big fan of YES and had no idea Jon Anderson was involved with this Christian project, of which I am just thrilled and in awe. It's a fantastic and eclectic album and the Irish Film Orchestra lent that exrta special something. All of the songs are note-worthy and it is impossible to pick a favorite. Anyone who loves good music will love this album, Christian or not. (But proud to say I am. ;)

5 out of 5 stars A song for every mood...Essential Christian listening!.......2002-05-19

An awesome album. One of my all time favourites. It's hard to pick an out and out best track - "The only thing I need" is outstanding simply because of Jon Anderson's incredible vocals. To hear the lead singer of my favourite group when growing up in the 1970's (ie. Yes, all of whose album's I still have) laying down his voice on a Christian compilation completely blew me away...
The most special track on the album for me though, has to "I will rest in You" by Jaci Velasquez (though Michelle Tumes' penwriting skills are obvious throughout - I'd have love to have heard her sing it). I had this song played at my father's funeral after I had read from John 14:1-6 and paid tribute to him. It melted the congregation and will always have a very, very special place in my heart because of that. A truly amazing complilation that can speak to your soul. Don't miss it....

5 out of 5 stars Thank you, God!.......2001-08-09

I bought this CD for "I Will Rest in You" by Jaci Velasques and I am glad I did! There are so many meaningful songs on this CD. Not only are the words great, but the music is, too! You could sit and listen to these songs for hours. I was happy to see that Point of Grace had recorded a song for this CD, too, and it is great! Please check this out. It's a great way to just relax and be with God.

A document of the 1998 tour, Lilith Fair: A Celebration of Women in Music, Vol. 3 is thus far the most lively and affecting recording of Sarah McLachlan's summer festival. From the percussive chop-socky blues of Emmylou Harris's "Deeper Well" to Holly Cole's richly intoned "Onion Girl" to Sixpence None the Richer's quirky take on the pop hit "Kiss Me" to Rebekah's sparsely searing "Little Black Girl," the women presented here are fierce, fiery, and fabulously fruitful. Included also are Suzanne Vega's late-'80s signature song, "Luka," the Indigo Girls' banjo porch rocker "Get Out the Map," and N'dea Davenport's sultry-smooth "Underneath a Red Moon." While some notable '98 participants lack representation here (where are Paula Cole, Missy Elliot, and Lucinda Williams?), this volume is a proud achievement of fine production and optimal sequencing, and the performances are of greater diversity than offered previously. --Paige La Grone

4 out of 5 stars Lilith Ladies do not Dissapoint.......2005-07-21

While all of the songs on this record are outstanding and fun to hear live, Liz Phair's "Never Said" is a radio classic. Her first real recognition came from this song which helped make her an indie princess. An awesome buy.

5 out of 5 stars Better than the first!.......2001-01-13

I got this CD last night and have listened to it 6 times since, it is that good!!!! Luka is a depressingly excellent song, and Get Out The Map is cute and country-ish. It is so ecclectic and broad. My favorite songs are probably Luka, Get Out the Map, Naked Eye, and Never Said. If you are a fan of female music, buy this, you won't be dissapointed!

2 out of 5 stars Sixpence makes this CD none the richer.......2000-03-22

Holly and Sarah are great. Many of the artists are edgy and mature. But "Kiss Me" by Sixpence is an example of the sappy shallowness that this CD gets stuck in. Two stars is generous. Reissue this without the Sixpence track.

1 out of 5 stars McLachlan & Cole save this CD-, however, sonically it sucks.......1999-10-11

I demand some reasonable effort by producers to do a decent job of recording music, and ARISTA seems, in general, to be subpar on most of their releases. However, this seems to be worse than their average. While they can blame it on this being a live album -- it's a poor excuse. If you have any audiophile tendencies, don't buy this CD -- although the music is reasonably good, the shabby job of recording/transferring to CD format will leave you disappointed and wanting your money back.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous!.......1999-09-05

I was give Volume 2 and I thought it was good. I decided to go see how Volume 3 was. I loved it! In my opinion even better then the Volume 2! It has a wide variety of songs that all sound great. i loved Sarah's "Black and White". It's amazing!

5 out of 5 stars Awww...........2005-09-29

Why did this band Break up!?!?!? I'm suprised that these earlier Sixpence records didn't get the airtime it deserved on the radio. Sixpence SHOULD be the hottest thing right now if it weren't for their hiatus.

This Album is Great! Get this + This Beautiful Mess + Divine Discontent + The self Titled... It's Worth ALL of the Money, Trust Me... You won't be disappointed, and You might never experience the sight of this band ever again...:(

5 out of 5 stars Auspicious Debut.......2005-02-22

I bought this on cassette in 1994 while on a business trip to the U.K. I had never heard of the band before, and because of their name I thought they might be an English group! (I wasn't yet into C.S. Lewis enough to catch the reference.) Imagine my surprise to find they were not only from Texas, but one of the best-sounding, freshest Christian bands I had encountered up to that time. "Fatherless" is an exceptionally good starting point for a band that had a marvelous run, and knew how to quit when they were ahead. Recommended without reservation.

4 out of 5 stars Humble Beginnings.......2003-01-25

I love buying a band's first album after I've become a fan of later works - it's always fun to hear where my favourite groups started out. For example, I first became a fan of Sixpence through their second record, "This Beautiful Mess". I loved the juxtaposition of Leigh's sweet voice against hard guitars and intelligent, literary lyrics. Then, I bought the self-titled record, well before "Kiss Me" hit the charts. That was when I bestowed the heavy title of Favourite Band Ever on Sixpence...

and this debut is good. Sure, it's not the concept-laden, Beatlesque masterpiece of their self-titled. Sure, it's not quite the daring spiritual rock of "This Beautiful Mess". It's not even the super-polished pop candy of "Divine Discontent", but it's good. They took their influences (most notably The Sundays) and made those styles their own. Matt Slocum was already writing smarter, deeper lyrics at 21 than most young writers these days. Leigh's voice is notably deeper, as she seems to be just finding it.

And all of that is okay. "Fatherless..." shines with intelligence, homage to influences, and loads of potential. It's a very summery, light record (despite the heavy lyrical content) with circular, swirly guitars and upbeat melodies.

Standouts (in my opinion) are "Field of Flowers", "An Apology", "Spotlight", "Trust", and "Falling Leaves".

5 out of 5 stars In case you thought Sixpence was a one-hit wonder..........2002-10-21

Long before Kiss Me, Sixpence released this debut. This was the start of their unique sound- very refreshing, when you consider how so many artists try to sound like someone else. This album is much more decidedly Christian than their S/T album that contains Kiss Me, but it's still not preachy. The first track, Field of Flowers, is surreal and fun, the track, Trust (Reprise) is gorgeous, and everything in between is excellent. Okay, anyway, buy this album. You won't regret it.

5 out of 5 stars The Start of Something Big.......2002-10-21

I bought this album at a concert right after it was released and was not disappointed. Sixpence is known for their recent work in the mainstream market, but this early release is of no less quality. I cannot tell you how many times the "trust" reprise has lifted a dark spirit. The pain in life is hard , but Sixpence stays true to what God has in store for us.

5 out of 5 stars Sixpence at its finest!!!!.......2006-07-01

This album is truly remarkable. Fans of Kiss Me beware! This one will rock your socks off! From the strong opening track "Angeltread" to the perfect finisher "I Can't Explain" Sixpence delivers. Guitarist/backup vocalist Tess Wiley provides an element that is missing from later Sixpence releases and Leigh Nash's vocals make this a truly one of a kind album. The songwriting is crafted in an artful way, much more than their later releases. This was one of the best albums of 1995 and the best Sixpence ever!

5 out of 5 stars I'm Sad!.......2005-09-29

In my opinion, the best Sixpence None the Richer album ever. Heavier, louder, and more agressive than their other releases, this one is sure to find a spot in your CD rotation.

Not for fans of "Kiss Me". ;)

5 out of 5 stars The best of their albums........2005-01-03

I saw Sixpence in the basement of a church with about 25 audience members more than 10 years ago when there were still 5 or 6 people in the band, including an amazing backup vocalist named Tess. This IS their best album. I have listened to the others, and nothing touches this. This was their best, most substantial work, and I still have it on cassette tape! If you like the other albums, BUY THIS. You will not be sorry.

5 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece of the painful, happiness, and beauty........2004-10-22

This is probably their best album. I am such a big Sixpence NTR fan, I have got every album, and am awaiting their new and final one "The Best of Sixpence None The Richer." My favorite songs on this beautiful mess are definatly Disconnect and Maybe Tomorrow. I also like the painful yet great chorus of Melting Alone. I highly recommend this CD to Sixpence Fans, and Non-Sixpence fans because it is not just their best album, but the best album I have EVER heard.

4 out of 5 stars Didn't know what song meant at first.......2004-11-27

Don't flame me for this but initially(haven't heard any other version), I thought the song "There She Goes" was about lesbiasm! Then I thought it was about a mother singing to her child but now I know the lyrics stand for something much more sinister,in heroin addiction.
But this version and the La's have ther own merits and are both worth listening to.

5 out of 5 stars WTF..........2004-11-05

they r always branded by "christian band".
.
does that mean that they can sing?
this version of "there she goes" isn't as good as the original La's version, but give me a break
this is a cover; it doesnt need to be as good as the first one.
they were unknown before the song, kinda, they did like any local band would do; sing a cover.
but ppl thought that it was good enough , thats how america heard it. They followed the suit of covering great songs because they owe thier success to this
they are a really good band, only if they get a chance
your attitudes r not of a normal un-bias music listener.
but dont buy the single, buy an album; better value

1 out of 5 stars The worst cover i've heard........2004-04-29

The La's produced an absolute classic in 'There She Goes' but this is absolutely atrocious record. Whilst the original was played with a proper feeling and drive this is sung out of tune, poorly performed and really sounds awful. 'Kiss Me' is an awful record too. My advice, Buy the La's version but avoid this totally!!

1 out of 5 stars Disposable Cover Song.......2004-03-22

The first time I heard this I wanted to kick my TV screen in. Apparently, Sixpence think so highly of this song they're willing to sell it to the hucksters for commercial use. I'm with the LA's fans, get their version which is on a great album. I hope this trend doesn't get out of hand--mediocre bands selling cover versions of great songs to ad agencies. Thank goodness for the Neil Young's of the world who will never sell out.

1 out of 5 stars Nobody Understands...........2003-10-04

The majority of reviewers on this board contend that this rubbish cover of The La's immortal single "There She Goes" (absolutely the best record of the past 15 years) is superior to the original, which is akin to saying that Oasis are a better pure pop band than The Beatles. Firstly, Sixpence None The Richer (a Christian band) don't seem to understand that Lee Mavers' classic, chiming tune is actually about heroin addiction! Secondly, the reviewers here who keep mumbling about this song's debt to The Velvet Underground don't understand that Mavers was far more talented than Lou Reed could ever hope to be (I abhor "...& Nico," easily the most overrated album of all-time). Simply, the fact that the Liverpudlian genius's signature tune has been turned into a MTV tween hit is an atrocity.

Wow, this is an excellent compilation. Just a great bunch of tunes that really fit well together. This is the kind of music you can listen to over and over again and not get tired of it. The only detracting point that might make it 4.5 stars is the Morning Crew DJs from the Point 104 singing (badly) "50 Nifty United States" which is tacked on to the end of the final track. But I can hit the "skip" button on my CD player when it gets to that - a small inconvience to put up with given the rest of the CD is so solid.
