Even those allergic to musicals may be won over by Once, a tender-hearted Irish romance with songs by Czech Republic-born Markéta Irglová and Frames frontman Glen Hansard. (The film's director, John Carney, actually used to play bass in the group.) The trick here is that Irglová and Hansard also play the leads; because their characters are shown busking, writing music, or rehearsing, the songs are smoothly integrated in the film. The overall acoustic mood won't surprise fans of the Frames--some tracks ("Say It to Me," "When Your Mind's Made Up") have even popped up on the band's albums, though the arrangements are more pared-down here, befitting the scruffy, street-musician setting. Being the lesser-known entity, Irglová feels like a revelation; she sounds a bit like a folkie Björk on "If You Want Me," and her song "The Hill" is downright heartbreaking. Irglová and Hansard had already made the 2006 album The Swell Seasontogether, so their collaboration here feels really organic--they sound particularly good together on the title track, for instance. Now that's the kind of magic you want from musicals. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

5 out of 5 stars Inseperable from the movie.......2007-07-30

For some reason subsequent listening to the track outside the movie are not as powerful. The film itself and the sountrack together are very moving but without it I'm not sure the sound track is as cohesive. Still, it's faultless, beautiful acoustic soundtrack.

The two scenes from the movie that are still haunting are the songs "If you want me" and "Say it to me now". I would actually suggest getting the DVD for the full experience. Awesome stuff.

5 out of 5 stars Soundstrack of movie "Once".......2007-07-29

If I could give it more stars I would. Went into see this movie that my husband had picked out. He said it was described as an unusual musical. That's all I knew. I loved this movie so much. Couldn't get the tunes out of my head. Went home right after the movie and bought the CD on Amazon. Went to see it again and brought my brother-in-law and his wife to see it. They loved it. I had already bought two CD's (planned on giving them one) even before they had seen the movie. This is one of those inexpensive movies that become an incredible hit. Trust me, go and see it.

5 out of 5 stars Great soundtrack.......2007-07-28

This is a great CD. I saw the movie and like many others ordered the CD. Marketa Irglova has an incredible voice. I highly recommend this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Loved it!.......2007-07-26

Loved the movie and loved the CD. This music sticks to your soul and you'll want to listen to it over and over agin.

5 out of 5 stars Oh, it's amazing.......2007-07-26

Yes, it is. I liked the film but the music is what keeps me coming back for more.

Although it squarely falls in the "jukebox musical" category, Jersey Boys doesn¹t try to integrate its songs in an artificial plotline. The show tells the story of the early-1960s group the Four Seasons, and the musical numbers tend to be introduced in context, as when songwriter Bob Gaudio comes up with a tune, or the quartet performs a show. This allows Jersey Boys to flow better than some of ill-fated peers, and the actors can shine without having to bend backward to accommodate an inane book. The show's most (only) daring move is to start with a hip-hop-tinged French-language version of "December 1963 (Oh, What a Night)," an actual hit in France in 2000. After that it's all VH1-biopic territory, but it's done with so much flair, taste and energy that the ride's a fun one. The Four Seasons had enough hits ("Sherry," "Big Girls Don't Cry," "Rag Doll," etc.) to easily fill an evening at the theater, so it's left to the cast to do right by them. And it does, particularly John Lloyd Young as the band¹s star lead, Frankie Valli. Young hits all the falsetto notes and brings real freshness to the part. His "Can¹t Take My Eyes Off You," a second-act peak, is signed, sealed and delivered with a star's acumen. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

    Album Description

Recounting the rich history and reliving the timeless sounds of the phenomenal Frankie Vallie & The 4 Seasons, the new Broadway musical Jersey Boys answers the musical-and philosophical question, "How did four would-be wise guys from Newark, NJ, become one of the greatest chart-topping successes in pop music history?" Jersey Boys celebrates legendary Rock and Roll Hall of Famers Frankie Valli, Bob Gaudio, Tommy DeVito, and Nick Massi who, as the 4 seasons, wrote their own songs, invented their own identity, and sold 175 million records worldwide-all before they were 30.

    5 out of 5 stars Jersey Boys.......2007-07-30

This is one of the best CDs I have ever purchased. The cast of Jersey Boys gave an outstanding performance. They were just as good as the original Four Seasons. I relive many happy memories when I listen to this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Jersey Boys relived.......2007-07-28

This is a great way to re-live the musical. And even if you haven't seen it, it's a great way to be introduced to the songs of Franki Valli and the Four Seasons. Wow! It's amazing all of the songs you recognize that have been re-done over the years. But the originals are always the best. Check it out!

Fabulous! I loved that they included much of the dialog from the show and the music was impeccable.

3 out of 5 stars Jersey Boys (2005 Original Broadway Cast).......2007-07-19

Singers doesn't try to make the same sound the same original. The music sounds like the voices don't care about what they are doing. I was kinda disappointed.

Purchased CD prior to seeing the show when visiting USA in '06. A fun lively show - the CD now captivates those fond memories of not only the foot tapping music & show but also our special time in New York.

For its fifth cinematic installment, the Harry Potter franchise gets a new composer as England's Nicholas Hooper (a usual collaborator of new director David Yates) succeeds Patrick Doyle and John Williams. The screeching electric guitar that suddenly irrupts on the very first track, "Fireworks," lets the listener know that all is not quiet on the Hogwarts front. The kiddies are growing up, evil is spreading: which is worse?! But actually this modern sonic touch is deceiving: Hooper works within an old-school format and mostly sticks to tried-and-true effects. His score is best when it goes for tension and unease, particularly in its use of low, rumbling tones: A choir starts by humming in a menacing manner in "Dementors in the Underpass"; the sound at the beginning of "The Death of Sirius" feels as if it's being belched out from some deep, dark, scary place, creating an effective atmosphere of dread. Elsewhere, the beginning of "Possession" feels as if it belongs in a J-horror movie, and then the track becomes deceptively calm before the storm hits again. Keen listeners will recognize Williams' "Hedwig's Theme" in "Another Story," but mostly Hooper is his own man. Just like the overall series, which gets darker and darker as it goes along, this CD makes for a rather brooding listening experience--the pizzicato violins on "Umbridge Spoils a Beautiful Morning" provide one of the few jaunty touches. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Featuring a colorful and inspiring score by Nicholas Hooper, the soundtrack to Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix takes the movie-goer to the next level of magical enchantment right along with Harry and his friends.

    Customer Reviews:

    2 out of 5 stars Horrible.......2007-07-31

All I can say is this. If the producers want the last two movies to do well, one of the main things they need to do is get a decent composer. Seriously, do absolutely whatever it takes to get John Williams back, or get James Horner, or Howard Shore, or Danny Elfman. Really, anyone that is a serious film score composer and knows how to write for an epic action adventure movie. Stop hiring people whose only credits are writing jingles for stupid TV shows.
Not related to the score, they need to also get a real director who has had experience with large film budgets. Get Spielberg or Bruckheimer to produce it. And please, please, PLEASE recast Dumbledore. Michael Gambon may be a great gangster, but he is a horrible Dumbledore.

    1 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2007-07-31

The soundtrack from the Order of the Phoenix was terribly disappointing. It does not incorporate much of anything from the previous soundtracks, making one wonder if this was, in fact, music from the movie. Not worth the money.

    5 out of 5 stars A must have..........2007-07-30

This is a must have for any REAL HP fan.....had to have it! Along w/ the other ones available :)

1 out of 5 stars Poor Music written ignoring the other soundtracks........2007-07-30

Compared to the other Harry Potter Soundracks, this is just a huge sequence of orchestral chords with some crescendos and diminuendos, but nothing to do with the tradition of music in Harry Potter films. It has no powerful melodies, which were a main characteristic in the previous soundtracks, specially those made by Williams. I say a good melody is the one people can easily remember and even sing, and this soundtrack can be easily forgotten!

We have to accept it's hard to make a soundtrack as good as John William's. And I don't say this just because I like him as a composer, but because of the experience he has on film music making. But Patrick Doyle made something real good with the Goblet of Fire soundtrack (previous to this), a bit far from William's work, but definetely fitting in the movie. But this Hooper made just amazingly weak music for this movie. The peaks on tho movie just don't have peaks in the music.

5 out of 5 stars Fun Soundtrack Really Captures the Mood!.......2007-07-28

I really enjoyed this soundtrack. It's right up there with Prisoner of Azkaban as my two favorite HP soundtracks (though I like them all).

I really felt that Nicholas Hooper captured the mood with these tracks. There isn't a better example than "Professor Umbridge" which charicatures the snooty arrogance, pomposity and ridiculousness that is Dolores Umbridge. You can actually hear her stomping sinisterly down the halls all dressed in frilly pink outfits.

I listen to this CD at work and it's very pleasant and not distracting at all. It makes my day more enjoyable to have it in the background. If you know of any artists or albums that sound like this soundtrack (especially the Professor Umbridge track) please let me know by emailing me at [...]

Who would have thought that Duncan Sheik would succeed where Paul Simon and Randy Newman failed, successfully transitioning from the pop-rock world to the Broadway stage? With Spring Awakening, Sheik and book writer/lyricist Steven Slater (who had already worked on Sheik's 2001 album Phantom Moon) have created a thoroughly exciting show that incorporates a contemporary art-indie idiom (including a small rock band instead of an orchestra) into a dramatic musical-theater context. The unlikely setting is that of a Frank Wedekind adaptation, but as it turns out, teenage angst is perennial, whether it's in contemporary America or in a 1891 German boarding school. Songs such as "The Bitch of Living" ("with nothing going on, asking just what went wrong"), "The Word of Your Body," "I Don't Do Sadness," and "Totally Fucked" ("You're fucked if you speak your mind and you know you will") resonate with the rage, frustration, confusion, excitement, joy, anger, and of course budding lust of those hormone-driven years. The show is greatly enhanced by its youthful cast members (they're all pretty close in age to their characters), who sing their hearts out. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

    Album Description

Decca Broadway presents the cast recording for the acclaimed new Broadway production, SPRING AWAKENING. Written by pop music composer Duncan Sheik and playwright/lyricist Steven Sater, the musical explores emotional earthquakes in the lives of teenagers.

SPRING AWAKENING is based on Frank Wedekind's controversial 1891 drama, which was scandalous in its day for addressing sex violence and suicide. The story, dialogue and costumes suggest the 19th Century, and are perfectly wedded to a beautiful alternative pop music score by Grammy® nominated singer/songwriter Duncan Sheik. The creative team also includes Tony® Award Winning director Michael Mayer (Thoroughly Modern Millie) and legendary choreographer Bill T. Jones.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Spring Awakens.......2007-07-30

This new musical by Duncan Sheik is pretty damn amazing! The singers are backed up by a minimal orchestra of violins, guitars and a few other instruments. This helps you really get a grasp on the emotional vocals that these young teens are producing. Spring Awakening is a fresh, new musical that takes an outlook on the pains of growing up and the pressure that one is put through when going through puberty. I love this musical and being a musical theatre student i feel that it is essiental for every musical theatre lover! To put it plainly----this musical ROCKS!!!

5 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Moving and Original.......2007-07-27

I've heard so much buzz about Spring Awakening, so it was a little difficult to believe all the the rave reviews before I bought the album. All those reviews are right though! It should be a discordant mixture - a 19th century German setting and a pop-rock musical score, but Sheik pulled it off perfectly. Spring Awakening has a soundtrack that will hold both angst-ridden MTV watchers and hardened Broadway buffs enthralled. It is slightly reminiscent of previous musicals, such as Rent and Bare, but it has a spirit and vibrancy all its own. I strongly recommend this! Definitely a highlight of the last few years of Broadway cast recordings!

    2 out of 5 stars What's all the hype?????.......2007-07-23

This one totally escaped me...I can't believe it won so many Tony Awards. Most of the music sounds the same ...without a real melody to be found. A Rent wannabe that falls way short.

    1 out of 5 stars Spring Awakennings? I don't think so!!!.......2007-07-23

Having seen the musical of Spring Awakennings at the beginning of this year I would strongly reconsider purchasing this broadway cast recording. I am a theatre goer (at the age of 29) and have seen the majority of the lastest musicals for example, Grey Gardens, and The Pirate Queen. Anyway I was discusted with the musical of Spring Awakennings; why is it cool to show a couple simulating sex and watching a ploke pretending to toss off? constant swearing etc... - How sick is that!!!!... and you call this a musical worthy of nominations (of the year awards)! What is the world coming to! and what drugs are these so called critics taking?

In my opinion buy something else with your money such as 'The Pirate Queen' which has no longer showing.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best musical soundtracks ever!.......2007-07-22

My favorite tracks are "Don't Do Sadness/Blue Wind", "The Song of Purple Summer", "The Dark I Know Well", "My Junk" and "Totally F*ucked".

If the 9-year-old in your life hasn't alerted you already, consider this your heads up: Not since Hilary Duff has Disney delivered the masses a tween sensation as hot as the double-life-leading Miss Hannah Montana. More important for speaker-blowing second- to seventh-graders and the parents forced to buy them CDs, though, no small-screen sensation transcends the tube more convincingly. Part party girl and part plain old good girl, Montana--a sweet-voiced, playful performer--never skimps on the pipes. Country fans will chalk that up to our rhyme-named heroine's lineage; 14-year-old Miley Cyrus, who plays Montana, is the daughter of Nashville star Billy Ray Cyrus (who duets on this disc's sentimental, twang-resistant last track). The rest of the world, though, is apt to find itself belting along based on Hannah's unsinkable hooks and frothy Ashlee-meets-Hilary vocals alone: theme song "Best of Both Worlds" bumps around off a Joan Jett-reminiscent springboard; "Who Said" rips a page from the emo diaries; and "Just Like You" ladles on harmonies sweet enough to attach a stick to. Additional tracks like Jesse McCartney's "She's No You" and B5's Earth Wind & Fire redo "Shining Star" are first-rate complements to the proceedings, but make no mistake: this dance-happy hybrid belongs to the reigning pop princess alone. --Tammy La Gorce

Yep, it's hard to believe that a man of thirty-one years is writing a review of the "Hannah Montana" soundtrack but it's true. My daughter, age six, has always enjoyed the TV series that this soundtrack was put out in support of. She naturally wanted to get this disc and did so for her birthday a little over a month ago. Since then, I can't tell you how many times I've been subjected to my daughter singing many of the songs on this album. It is pure bubblegum pop. It's not too offensive nor is it too risque for the younger crowd. It's also easily digestable for parents of children enthralled with Miley Cyrus' portrayal of Montana. Despite being rather fluffy lyric-wise, these songs still manage to be better that pretty much all of today's reigning pop princesses. Cyrus' vocals are much better than the likes of Ashlee Simpson and Avril Lavigne. She also seems like an altogether nicer person than either of them. I've always respected her father, who real fans of country music know spent many, many years trying to make it before hitting with "Achy Breaky Heart." The guy isn't as cheesy as you'd think, and is actually a truer country artist than most of today's mainstream stars like Tim McGraw and Kenny Chesney. It appears that he and his wife are taking the right steps to prevent their daughter from turning into a teenage burn-out queen like Britney Spears or so many other teen stars who couldn't handle being on top.

Highlights of the album include the show's theme, "Best Of Both Worlds," "Who Said," and "This Is The Life." A few of the songs are from other artists and other than the Click Five's "Pop Princess," they are a definite step down from the pop quality of Cyrus' tracks.

Overall, I'd have to say that any person who really enjoys pop music will find that this is one of the better albums out there. It also looks as if many of its songs will have a longer shelf life than many other pop songs that are currently out there. Definitely buy this if you have a daughter between the ages of six and twelve. It's great music for them to listen to.

    I highly recommend this album.

    5 out of 5 stars Daughter Loves.......2007-07-24

I bought this for my daughter's 5th birthday. To say she loves it is an understatement. She listens to it everyday.
The tunes are very catchy. I find myself singing to it.
    She loves it!

1 out of 5 stars Pathetic Beyond Belief.......2007-07-19

The daughter of a mullet-haired hick called Billy Ray Cyrus only gets her stardom because...well, she's the daughter of that guy. Miley Cyrus is a hick herself, and when it comes to a teenybopper music, she knows how to sell her schmuck to the middle school students. She can't sing to save her life, regardless of whatever you are told. She's just a Hilary Duff offshoot, but with a redneck accent.

And I can tell you, I actually listened to part of her song. It cursed me. It raped my ears. It made me lose all of my shreds of sanity. Plus, it's on the Disney Channel, which has basically become a channel of generic, derivative and lifeless teen-based shows that use the same kid actors over and over. It's pathetic.

Unless you want to lose your sanity for eternity, destroy your eardrums and make Walt Disney spin in his grave a couple more times, by all means should you purchase this. Just be warned when you're using this to support your drinking glass in a few months.

Sadly, Curtains is the final entry in the long and fruitful partnership of lyricist Fred Ebb (who died in September 2004) and composer John Kander. While the show doesn't reach the heights of the team's previous masterpieces, such as Cabaret and Chicago, it's certainly a lot better than, say, their middling 1997 offering Steel Pier. Deliberately old-fashioned (it even features a real overture, something that's fast becoming a rarity), Curtains is a whodunit rolled into a musical--or vice versa. Set in 1959 Boston, it takes place backstage at a singing-and-dancing Western corker titled Robbin Hood. Someone gets killed, and a show tunes-crazy homicide detective (David Hyde Pierce) is called in. The plot is just a pretext for a series of very entertaining, characteristically brass-heavy songs that may not have the bite of old Kander and Ebb but are still very catchy. Above all, Curtains is (both thematically and stylistically) a love letter to old-school showbiz, and it's delivered on a silver platter by a cast of pros that includes the aforementioned Hyde Pierce, Kander and Ebb habituée Karen Ziemba, endearing Jason Danieley and, a notch above the rest, Debra Monk. Unsurprisingly, she chews the scenery and spits it right back in a pair of rowdy numbers: "Show People" and "It's a Business." --Elisabeth Vincentelli

    Album Description

Curtains is an entertaining play within a play, as well as a "whodunit" new musical comedy featuring one of the last scores by legendary, Tony Award-winning songwriters John Kander and Fred Ebb (Cabaret, Chicago, New York, New York). Starring David Hyde Pierce (Spamalot, "Frasier") and Debra Monk, the Curtains original Broadway cast album is produced by nine-time Grammy Award-winner Jay David Saks.

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Pretty good Kander and Ebb.......2007-07-29

I thought the score was pretty good, but not great. A problem seems to be having songs for a "lackluster" show within a show (Robbin Hood). The PRODUCERS did it much better. Still and all it's nice to have a traditional Broadway score.

    5 out of 5 stars Curtains.......2007-07-29

I have purchased the CD and I can't stop listening to it. The lyrics are incredibly clever and the music catchy. I always think a score needs to be listened to at least three times before judging, and in my view Curtain's score is indeed a winner.

In the Same Boat is a Kander & Ebb tour de force.

The arrangements, production and mixing of this CD are superb, and the chorus work is probably the best I've heard on any show CD for many a long year...

1 out of 5 stars DRAW THE CURTAINS. THE FLOW AND EBB IS GONE.......2007-07-28

Sometimes putting on a Broadway musical can be murder. And the team of Kander and Ebb should know. Their latest, Curtains, is about--you guessed it!--murder . . . at a musical! The score and script have been shopped around for nearly a decade; although Ebb is dead, and the original author of the book, Peter Stone, has also joined that great chorus line in the sky, you can't keep a good show down. With apparently a great deal of help from the multi-talented Rupert Holmes, Curtains is enjoying an enormous success in New York. Starring a post-Frasier and newly-emerged-from-the closet David Hyde Pierce (it is a Broadway musical!) as a detective who moonlights as an amateur musical fanatic, it's all pretty light and fun. Initially conceived as a reasonably serious roman a clef with characters based on real show people, and layers of reality and illusion stripped away by the murderer, it has been dumbed down to a 1959 tryout at Boston's Colonial Theatre with lovey-dovey ballads, winsome love songs and rousing chorus numbers. The score is a valentine to old-fashioned musical comedies; the problem is that the writers have succeeded beyond their wildest expectations in making it a '50s musical--and, frankly, not a particularly memorable one. Karen Ziemba, Debra Monk and Hyde Pierce are kind of fun, but, the kind of musicals to which Curtains pays homage were kind of lame. If you're a fan of this rather bland Broadway musical sub-genre, go for it. But we draw the curtain on Curtains.

5 out of 5 stars Broadway Musical "Curtains" cast CD.......2007-07-28

Great Broadway musical - great CD! If you loved the show, the CD will keep the happy memories going.

    4 out of 5 stars Curtains - Worth Hearing.......2007-07-25

One of the last Kander and Ebb musicals, Curtains is a great addition to my collection. I saw the show in the LA tryouts and glad I have the CD to it now. While it isn't up there with Cabaret and Chicago it still has some fun tunes. The wonderful cast includes David Hyde Pierce in his Tony award winning role, Debra Monk, Karen Ziemba and Edward Hibbert.

With a plot centering around a murder mystery against the background of a musical's out of town tryout in Boston this period piece is quite unique. I enjoyed it.

The music for this third chapter in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise is a traditional, efficient action score that, due to the film's setting, occasionally incorporates light Asian touches. The popularity of Hans "Long John" Zimmer (all the credits in the CD's liner notes include pirate-themed nicknames, like the roll call in a Simpsons Halloween episode) isn't in doubt--he sure is one in-demand composer--but afficionados are divided about his artistic worth, and this score isn't about to reconcile them. Some think that Zimmer relies too much on his stable of composers and sticks to tried-and-true recipes; others admire his capacity to weave themes in and out of cues, creating a whole made of subtly interrelated parts. At World's End feeds both camps: Seven of his collaborators are credited with writing "additional music," and the album feels by-the-numbers at times; but those inclined to listen very closely will be rewarded by the way Zimmer sneaks in bits of two main melodies (especially variations on the first track, a pirate theme titled "Hoist the Colours" and cowritten by director Gore Verbinski) throughout. The use of electronics is so light as to be almost undetectable, which will please fans of a more organic orchestral sound. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

The CD came delivered on time and packed well. It has also been very enjoyable and definitely a good buy.

5 out of 5 stars Hoist The Colours!!!.......2007-07-25

I have always been a fan of soundtracks. I really adore the works of Harry Gregson-Williams, Danny Elfman and, of course, John Williams. I now can say I have a new composer that I can add to my list; Hans Zimmer, the composer for Pirates of the Caribbean Dead Man's Chest, At World's End and he also Overproduced the score for The Curse of the Black Pearl. Compared to past "attempts" I believe that Hans Zimmer has hit the jackpot.

The CD "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End" is unbelievably the best CD of the three. It contains 13 tracks including, one of my favorites, Hoist the Colours (the song the boy sings at the beginning of the movie, which becomes the back tone of the entire movie). It is a must buy for all soundtrack, movie, Disney and pirate lovers. I have never listened to a soundtrack this much since John Williams Star Wars Episode 1 Special Edition CD.

But there is a draw back for me. The CD is a Digipak. A Digipak is a CD that has cardboard-like outside rather than a plastic cover like most CD's. I don't `hate' them, I just don't like seeing things of mine getting ripped. So if you don't want your case/album art warped, get it on iTunes.

Overall it is a great CD and a must buy! " Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End" soundtrack gets 5 stars out of 5.

    My name is Amone. Adios!

    5 out of 5 stars Wow.......2007-07-17

This is the best soundtrack in the "Pirates" series. Hans Zimmer has melded the Eastern sounds with the West and composed an intricate melody which is hard to forget. My favorite soundtrack so far!

I love his music. And all the movie soundtracks he has done. I already have two of these, one for my car,and one for my home. This purchase was for my best friend on her birthday. His music for soundtracks, always intenses and blends so well with the movie, which it is all about. He's a wonderful composer.

Loosely based on the popular Disney theme park audio-animatronic ride, one might expect a modicum of good-natured "Yo-ho-ho-ing"--or maybe a little rousing Korngold/Errol Flynn/Captain Blood orchestral romanticism--here. Instead composer Klaus Badelt initially entices us with some sparing Celtic folk charm, then unleashes a furious broadside of symphonic and choral thunder to rival his ominous score for K-19. The composer's fellow German mentor is an obvious influence throughout (the album is credited with a wink as "Score overproduced by Hans 'Long John' Zimmer") but Badelt brings his own muscular instincts to bear throughout. Perhaps shrewdly realizing that genre cliches are nothing if not for reinventing, Badelt delivers his rhythmically nervous Eurocentric sensibilities--sort of Holst duels Shostakovich on the Spanish Main--with the subtlety of a scorching cannonball. It's seasoned with a little romantic respite in the final act, if a bit gingerly, and could no doubt profit by some of Korngold's sparkling melodic verve. But it's a loud, unabashed Summer Blockbuster score at heart; alert the neighbors. --Jerry McCulley

I loved the movie, but I love the music even more. This is an excellent CD with only one problem - the last song (which is my favorite) is not long enough. It's easy to picture scenes from the movie while listening to each song. If you enjoy the symphony you will enjoy this CD. Happy listening!

I agree with the other reviewers about the music, which is fine, but also want to point out that this is a terrific work-out for sound systems with REAL sub woofers (not the scrawny boxes that say they are, but aren't). If you have a room shaker system, down to like 15 Hz, this is for you. The deepest and most sustained bass I have ever heard.

Secret - listen for hints of Gladiator and Mission Imossible. He helped with those films - maybe they are little inside jokes?

4 out of 5 stars Now it makes more sense..........2007-07-30

It appears that some of the most memorable score cues from the movie are actually from Mark Isham's soundtrack "Life As A House" (Listen to track 11 from "Life As A House" for example.)

Now I'm beginning to understand why there seems to be such a paucity of score cues on this CD. I think either Glass' score was partially rejected or he only scored a small part of the movie to begin with.

3 out of 5 stars Where's my Philip Glass? .......2007-07-30

The other music on the cd is perfectly fine. It's good music actually, but I wanted more score. I was hoping the two score cues would be longer than they were.

Philip Glass only used a few motifs (three tops) in the movie...would it have been so hard to include all of them (as opposed to 1)?

Shame on Decca...unless they're planning on releasing a score-only CD.
    Hope they do.

5 out of 5 stars This is an unique soundtrack.......2007-07-29

This is an unusual soundtrack. It combines instrumental music with opera music. This disc also has two songs from popular singers. I love the track "Sway" by Michael Buble. I also enjoyed the track "Mambo Gelato" These two tracks make me want to grab someone and dance. The opera tracks on this disc are excellent. The best of the bunch is "La Donna E Mobile" by Joseph Calleja. This track is very uplifting and playful. "Cielo E Mar" is a romantic sounding track from Pavarotti. "Nessum Dorma" is a really soothing track from Pavarotti too. He has such a powerful voice. Philip Glass is a talented composer for the film. I love his instrumental restaurant theme here. It is a beautiful piece of music. "Count On My Love" is a great song that fits the tone of the movie well. I really enjoyed listening to the music on this soundtrack.

3 out of 5 stars More score, less opera please.......2007-07-28

Phillip Glass's score was exceptional, why there isn't more of it on the rousing soundtrack, I can't imagine, but the lack leaves a hole in the overall CD.
