Great covers that don't get stale.......2004-04-11
I agree with the UB40 purists that UB40's covers are not as fundamental as Signing Off etc., but I was surprised at how this triple album boxed set did not fade easily. I copied the lot to my Mac Powerbook for a ten day working trip to Venezuela and have played the entire set 10 times over! That says a lot as I have plenty of other choices on the hard drive. My favorites are Holly Holy, Guilty, My Best Girl, Please don't Make me Cry, The Way you do thye things you do, The train is coming, Blood and Fire and Stay a little bit longer. Why? Well the driving beat on a good pair of headphones, the rythyms, the sheer variety from ballad to reggae pop, 8 Brummies all doing their thing, taking turns to shine.
UB40 is an enigma, a piece of Jamaica that is not entirely Jamaican, a true slice of cosmopiltan Birmingham. 25 years and still going strong - how many 8 piece bands can boast that?

UB40 are not great innovators, but they are great imitators, and, in a sense, Labour of Love made them the Pat Boone of reggae. Featuring a handsome and clean-cut (by reggae standards) white singer, Ali Campbell, UB40 covered Jamaican standards and turned millions of Americans and Europeans on to another form of black music. Interestingly enough, the album's smash hit, "Red Red Wine," was a cover of a rocksteady cover of a Neil Diamond track. Being that UB40 had the pick of the reggae litter, Labour of Love is chock full of stellar material. From Jimmy Cliff's "Many Rivers to Cross" to the Melodians' "Sweet Sensation" to Johnny Clarke's "Keep On Moving," Labour of Love still serves as an excellent reggae starter kit. --Bill Crandall
Customer Reviews:
Inspiring and pulsating regae beat.......2007-06-28
OK, these songs are mainly covers but they are really done well, with UB40's own special beat added to the reggae brew.
Look how Neil Diamond's Red, Red wine is changed into a regae-disco song with Red Red, Wine.
then there is the upbeat love song, Cherry Oh Baby, the redone Bob Marley song, Keep On Moving, the sad love song Please Don't Make Me Cry, that cover of the super Jimmy Cliff hit, Johnny Too Bad, with it's inspiring and pulsating regae beat, as well as the cover of another smashing Jimmy Cliff hit, Many Rivers to Cross, and the love song Guilty.
This is actually my favourite UB40 album, from the heady reggae days of the early 80's.
Good Enough.......2006-11-20
I'll admit it: I just wanted "Red Red Wine."
What I got was about 40 minutes of 80s reggae. I think that about sums it up: Plinkety-plonk synths meet the slow boom-chaka-boom-chaka rhythms of reggae. There's nothing wrong with that, though. It's a good listen, and it would go well at a party. The songs were all alright in their own way, I suppose, but the one that caught my attention was "She Caught the Train." It's stunted rhythms seemed so of-their-time that I just couldn't help liking it.
And, of course, it's got "Red Red Wine."
A REGGAE CLASSIC.......2006-02-16
ALONG WITH STEEL PULSE'S TRUE DEMOCRACY & BLACK UHURU'S ANTHEM FOR EXAMPLE, THIS IS ONE OF THE STELLAR RECORDINGS THAT REALLY HELPED TO KEEP REGGAE ALIVE IN THE EARLY YEARS AFTER MARLEY'S DEATH. UB40 ARE NOT A COVER/TRIBUTE BAND. THEY ARE DEDCATED REGGAE ARTISTS WHOSE TRUE PASSION IS ALL FOR REGGAE MUSIC. OUT OF 23 ALBUMS, ONLY 3 ARE ACTUAL COVERS. I HOPE REGGAE FANS WILL CHECK OUT THEIR NON LABOUR RECORDINGS. THIS ALBUM IS THE FIRST AND BEST OF THE LABOUR TRILOGY, PRESERVING THE ESSENCE OF THE PIONEERING ORIGINALS, BUT CREATING AN ORIGINAL VIBE ON THE SONGS THAT MAKE THIS ONE OF THE GREAT MUST-HAVE ALBUMS TO ANY REGGAE, OR GENERAL MUSIC COLLECTION.
UB lovin' this album........2005-06-07
Some may be tempted to get the "best of" because of its length, but this first "Labour Of Love" is hard to beat. This disc runs a perfect 40 minutes, and every song brings good vibrations. Of course their biggest hit is on here, the cover of "Red Red Wine", and it is the full version with the rap. But I also love "Cherry Oh Baby", "She Caught The Train", and the excellent and moving "Please Don't Make Me Cry". Every other track is a pleasure as well. The other two "Labour Of Love" discs are good also, but this is easily the best. I'll be playin' it 'til IB70.
The Best........2005-06-05
I'm not the most hardcore UB40 fan but I do know that every single song on this album is worth it. My second favorite album is the best of UB40, 1880-whatever, so that you have an idea of my personal tastes. I kind of cringe at their music thats a bit too commercial popped such as "I can't help falling in love with you." As for the older stuff, I kind of like the album Baldariggum (something like that.) But for me, it does not get better than Labour of Love. Totally pleasant vibes.

I love this CD! I have both Labor of Love and Labor of Love II. I listen to them on the way to work...and on my way to soccer games and practices. It's is such a relaxing CD. Even my daughter sings along with a few of the songs. You can't help but think you are in the islands relaxing while in the real world you are setting in rush hour traffic.
Buy the full length Labour of Love II album from England.......2001-10-31
I gave this one a 4 because its great, but IT'S MISSING 4 TRACKS which are one of the best on the album. You can't get them on the American release. It's worth paying more to get the import Labour of Love II. Look under IMPORTS.
Groovin'.......2001-04-03
Most of the Reggae purists will point to UB40's earliest works as their best. They may be right in a strictly Reggae forum. I don't suppose this album has the spiritual activist weight of much true Reggae. That being said, I love this CD. Ali Cambell has such unique vocal qualities and the horns are a great touch. Of all UB40's albums, this is my favorite. It takes a long time to get old and, if you put it away for a few weeks, it's brand new again. Groovin' is my favorite track, puts me in a good mood every time:)

Labour of Love casts attention on a facet of Nick Lowe's talent that's surprisingly uncelebrated--his songwriting prowess. Having made his mark as a producer, performer, and sideman, Lowe's skills as a singer-songwriter have been taken for granted, but, as this tribute confirms, Nick has long possessed a knack for mating blissful hooks with pithy couplets. Here an assortment of players and singers from a range of genres tackle Lowe gems dating from his new wave heyday up through his brilliant late-'90s comeback. Proving the adaptability of Lowe's material is half the fun here, as Joe Louis Walker turns the '70s anthem ("What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love, and Understanding" into a midtempo soul lament, "Half a Boy and Half a Man" is transformed by Sleepy LaBeef and C.J. Chenier into a zydeco workout, and "Soulful Wind" is given the deep blues treatment by Guy Davis. With Elvis Costello, Tom Petty, and Dar Williams along for the ride, the 13-song set deftly mixes and matches stars, commendable journeymen, and crack players into a tribute worthy of one of contemporary music's unsung heroes. --Steven Stolder
Customer Reviews:
One of the most solid tribute albums that I have heard..........2005-05-01
This is one of the most solid tribute albums that I have heard. The first half is 5 star territory leading off with Dar Williams singing "All Men Are Liars" into an authentic New Orleans feel with Graham Parker doing "The Rose of England" with T-Bone Walk on mandolin and accordion. Next up is Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers doing a superb version of "Cracking Up" and then back to New Orleans with Sleepy LaBeef teaming up with C.J. Chenier on "Half a Boy and Half a Man".
Other strong cuts are a couple of songs by Marshall Crenshaw, especially his version of "Television", a very somber Charlie Musselwhite with some heartfelt vocals and harmonica on "Faithless Lover" that you just don't want to end, and Elvis Costello singing and playing every instrument very nicely on "Egypt". The rest of the album is pretty solid with not one bad song to be found among these tracks. There's also a very talented backing band led by G.E. Smith throughout much of this CD as well.
What, Not Labor Of Lowe?.......2002-07-23
This excellent tribute album demonstrates the strength of Nick's songwriting, although this is not something that has gone unnoticed by his fans. Nick Lowe's cutting wit and his unfailing gift for the hook are the reason that he has been around so very long. Amusingly, Lowe is probably best known for Elvis Costello's cover of `What's So Funny About peace love And Understanding', though that song is not included here. Even more amusing is the fact that a little noticed cover of that same track on the monster selling BODYGAURD soundtrack made Lowe a millionaire. It's all about the covers, and this little gem of an album is chuck full of excellent covers. Especially notable are Petty's `Cracking Up' (originally included on his bloated box set, which is also excellent, by the way), Parker's `The rose Of England', Greg Brown's `Where's my Everything' and Marshall Crenshaw's `Television'. I suppose that given the excellence of the contributing artists, it's no surprise that LABOR OF LOVE is a five star album. It's a must have for his fans and excellent introduction to the Jesus Of Cool for the uninitiated.
Great covers of greater songs.......2002-02-24
On the first couple of listens, I thought this was a fairly run-of-the-mill tribute album. A tribute album should generally show you new things in songs you already know and love, and should highlight a couple of songs you may never have heard. The covers here were mostly note-for-note, with only a couple of twists on old material. But with more and more listening, the wonder of Nick Lowe's songwriting shines through, and some of the covers became revelatory. Marshall Crenshaw's contributions are fantastic (and if you don't know it, Marshall Crenshaw is at the top of his form these days - check out his live album). Tom Petty was a natural for "Cracking Up." Rockabilly star and hardest working man in rock Sleepy LaBeef teams up with CJ Chenier to put the fun into "Half a Boy and Half a Man" (my five-year-old reasons "that makes him a teenager, right?"). Dar Williams is fine, but does anyone remember Ric Astley anymore? Elvis Costello is revelatory, but he's ALWAYS revelatory these days, the only true singer left on the planet. Listen, if you have even half a love for Nick Lowe, check this out.
A nice addition to all the great Nick Lowe CD's out there.......2001-10-19
Coming on the heels of Nicks new album this is a very timely release. I'm surprised to see no one else had reviewed this CD since it's a fine album of interesting artists covering a truly great songwriter. And thankfully, most of it works well. For originality I'd run with Costello's "Egypt," The combination of Sleepy labeef and CJ Chenier rocking country cajun version of Half a Boy, " and I like turning "Cruel to be Kind" into a song for two singers. After that there are real solid interpretations by Dar Williams, Graham Parker (his voice just gets better and better), Tom Petty, Marshall Crenshaw and Greg Brown . I was amazed by Charlie Musselwhites vocals on one of Nicks new masterpieces. And that's my only gripe; I wish there had been more songs from his last recordings. Still I guess a tribute record has to cover songs everyone knows. Still there's easily a volume two, especially Now that we've just got more classic songs from This Year's "Convincer." Bottom-line; buy Nicks if you don't own all these songs. If you do then you'll surely enjoy this Labour Of Love

the only great thing to come of dating mike bertrand.......2002-05-12
This record's fantastic. I could whine about its only failing being that it ends too soon, but at least there's no grey filler here as with most full-length albums. Every minute of the EP shimmers--a wee gem.

This music is really incredible. The lead singer will remind you a lot of the soft-spoken Jewel but there is something so compelling about her style and accent that it really keeps you coming back for more. Really, believe me, try this album.

Customer Reviews:
One of my Favorite CDs.......2004-02-19
In this wonderful collection of Shakespeare settings, Mr. Rolfe-Johnson creates a magical atmosphere using his unbelievable musicality and gorgeous, gorgeous voice! The songs themselves range from the sweet and charming "No more Dams!" to the heavenly interpretation of "She Never Told Her Love", but for me the high point of the whole CD is his incredible performance of the early version of Vaughan Willams' "Orpheus with his Lute"...this song alone is worth the price of the album! Mr. Rolfe Johnson is truly one of the worlds most exquisite tenors! A must have for every fan of English Song!
Melodious Shakespeare.......2001-01-24
This CD consists of a collection of settings of Shakespearian lines by composers ranging from the 18th to the mid-20th centuries. It is an ideal vehicle for finding a new way to enjoy these writings of Shakespeare and also experience the work of a number of British composers, some well-known and some not so well-known

This band of Birmingham, England, roots rockers launched the Labour of Love cover series to show their devotion to the mid-'60s-to-early-'70s period in Jamaican music, when ska was slowing down to become bass-led rock steady. Soon after that, innovations in the drumming style helped create the next mutation, reggae, but UB40 still can't get enough of that wonderful rock-steady stuff. Since their list of top favorites numbers upwards of 200 titles, this series should last as long as they do. Volumes 1 and 2 spun off huge hits "Red Red Wine," "The Way You Do the Things You Do," and "Here I Am." Volume 3 packs guaranteed boomshots in "Holly Holy" and "Mr. Fix It." Some grouse that this band--the biggest reggae outfit in the world in terms of sales--is ripping off the music of black Jamaican artists. But reggae transcended national borders a long time ago, and UB40 have a stack of thank-you letters from artists they've covered in the past, names such as Honey and Winston Groovy, who were grateful for the recognition--not to mention the publishing fees! --Elena Oumano
Customer Reviews:
It's magic!.......2007-03-10
This album is wonderful! Prior to hearing it I read some bad reviews about it and was resisting from buying it. I bought, hear it and I have to say that now it stands as one of my favorite cds. The music is so uplifting, I bet it can change the mood in everyone. What I really love about UB40 works is how inventive they are in all the rhythm and special sounds. They are captivating and very elaborated. Sure they still have their special touch. 100% recommended.
Huge disappointment.......2007-03-08
This album will only appeal to die hard UB40 fans and not casual fans or fans who loved the old up tempo sound of UB40 on LOL 1 and 2. This album only has 2 up tempo songs that sound like the old UB40 from the early 80's and early 90's. Download the songs Come Back Darling and Mr. Fix it, so you can save your money. I love UB40, but after listening to LOL 1 and 2 I thought LOL 3 was going to be a classic, but it is not close compared to the previous LOL albums and seems like it was just put out to make a quick buck because there was no passion in the music and singing, which made the entire album boring or like Reggae elevator music until I heard the two songs I already mentioned and recommend downloading. Those two songs saved the album in my opinion, otherwise it would have gotten zero stars.
ANOTHER FINE CLASSIC!.......2000-09-30
UB40 returns with the third volume of the classic LABOUR OF LOVE series. Surprisingly the album remains just as enjoyable and unique as the first two. Ali Campbells vocals are still strong and uplifting. The highlights of the album include COME BACK DARLING, HOLLY HOLY, IT'S MY DELIGHT, GOOD AMBITION, CRYING OVER YOU and THE TRAIN IS COMING although this album is consistently very good from beginning to end. Will undoubtedly satisfy any UB40 fan. Highly recommended as this is another gem in their collection.
The first five tracks worth the whole album!.......2000-09-17
I have to disagree with some of the other reviewers about the sound of this album. It is true to their similar style on previous albums. I find it interesting that UB40 can take songs that have been previously recorded by other artists and make them their own, and with such passion.
Tracks 1-5, 7 and 12 are by far my favorites on this album. If I could only pick one, it would be "Come Back Darling". Buy this album you won't be disappointed.
They did it again.......2000-06-02
I've got every UB40 album, and I love them all, including this one. I can't believe these guys are still going strong--it must be their music (so chill) that's keeping them together. There's no other music that can chill you out like this music, and at the same time get you so fired up. They are the best, hats off to Ub40.
