5 out of 5 stars Best of the J Geils Band.......2007-07-20

This has all the songs I love on one disc...would recommend to anyone who doesn't want to purchase every album J Geils has out.

5 out of 5 stars Wanted More .......2006-11-04

but it is a good start ... Great Tunes ... Such a wide array of songs and styles is amazing ... Well , Peter Wolf is still Soul Rocking and he in a way is keeping the spirit of the band alive ( even if it is own his own ) ... Good retrospective ...

4 out of 5 stars A "Best of" done right.......2006-09-20

Many times these types of post career compilations are simply attempts to milk a little more cash after numerous "best ofs" and "greatest hits". However, in the case of J. Geils this is the one true essential disc. It has the big hits, but it also has the classic live tracks that have become rock radio staples. The only thing keeping this from five stars is the lumbering "Teresa" and the needless "Piss on the Wall". Substitute a cut from "Monkey Island" like "Surrender" or "Somebody" and this would be the perfect career summary.

4 out of 5 stars My Kids Like This CD (I do too!).......2006-08-29

If you are over 35 years old you will remember about 75% of the songs on this compilation. I purchased this CD because my two boys have heard "Centerfold" on the radio and love to sing along. They don't understand the lyrics (not yet anyway,..too early for that conversation) but you have to admit the refrain is infectious. This is a must have CD for "road trips" and/ or decade theme parties (70's and 80's). Not a 5 star from me due to sound quality of live selections.

3 out of 5 stars Short version.......2006-08-07

Why is Give It To Me the short version?

People there is a long version out there but once again Rhino decides not to use it.

It's like reading 1/2 a book.

4 out of 5 stars Cool,cooler, coolest. Best of J.Geils Band........2006-02-28

This is party, party, party music which will blow most of the competion in this genre right out in the open space. So where is the magic ?. Ok. Track 1 Southside Shuffel gives somekind of an answer, with it`s shuffel rythm that shaken and stir up the temperature, so to say. The vocal screams like
"the son of " Screaming Jay Hawkins. Raw and powerfull this one. Track 2 Give it to me, is a more "laidback" song, but has not the same quality as the first track. It`s humpin` and dumpin` to much in a way. Track 3 Where did our love go, is anyway a stunner, when it come`s to rawness and streetcredibility, as the real thing, with an effective harmonica to fill out all trough the song. Track 4 (Aint nothin but a )House party, is a let down, which doesn`t take of in the right direction. Track 5 Detroit Breakdown, is certainly ok but it hasn`t got the spark which i feel missing from it. Track 6 Whammer Jammer, is in the Screamin Jay Hawkins territory, and has feel, grooooove, and the bluesy feeling that some of us long fore. It`s a instrumental short gem in a way.
Track 7 I do, is my favourite. It`s very melodious in a way, and the "clapping hands rythm, help`s to. And when the harmonica set`s in gear, you just scream "woaaa". Track 8 Musta got lost, is a minor let down. Too much, too soon, and is the weakest track`s on this cd. Track 9 Looking for a love is to messy to make it a hit, but sparks here and there, but the melody structure is confusing sometimes. Anyway. This Cd has most of all very cool song`s,sometimes a bit cooler, and then Track 8 I do, a song wich certainly is the coolest on this CD. A good buy if you want a good introduction to a band that deliver`s in every departments.

5 out of 5 stars I WANT YOU TO TURN UP THE KNOBS, CUZ I THINK WE'RE GONNA HAVE A LITTLE FUN WITH THIS ONE!!!!!!!!!!.......2005-12-02

Scorchin! Too bad this hits package is so short! I need more fat on these bones, you dig? Still, this is the best hits package there is available. The only other is FLASHBACK, and that is all the sub par eigthies material. This one here showcases the bands best years. I want to mention that this band was SHAFTED in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame vote this year. They should have nailed it. This best of was first released in 1979, before CENTERFOLD and FREEZE FRAME were conceived. Instead this disc rocks nine J. GEILS BAND show stoppers from the early days. The live renditions are the highlights, as this band was obviously a house burner of a live act. WHERE DID OUR LOVE GO, LOOKIN FOR A LOVE, and WHAMMER JAMMER are all live and rockin right. The rest are just the best. GIVE IT TO ME is a classic jam track, MUSTA GOT LOST is just a classic, hands down. This is a great party favorite; boogie, blues, rock! HOUSE PARTY jams, DETROIT BREAKDOWN jams and SOUTHSIDE SHUFFLE jams too. I DO is a doo wap track that isn't essential per se but you won't be sorry that it's here. GET DOWN WITH THIS STUFF... GET DOWN NOW!

5 out of 5 stars HOWLIN' WOLF!.......2005-10-13

Boring cover art and a measly nine tracks aside, the fact that several of these are pulsating, showstopping live renditions should automatically tell the unitiated that the mighty J. Geils Band was one of THE premeire blues/rock concert acts of its or any other day. A ferocious hodgepodge of lean guitar work, swirling organ, heart-stopping harp, and the woofin' goofin' Peter Wolf's funky rasp, they OWNED covers of soul chestnuts "Lookin' For a Love", "Where Did Our Love Go", and "I Do". Their originals were equally classic: the reggae workout "Give It to Me", the complete pop perfection of "Musta Got Lost", and "Southside Shuffle"'s infectious RNB groove make this a House Party indeed! Again, it's MUCH too short, but I was going to get another brew anyhoo. WHAMMER JAMMER, DICKIE!!!

5 out of 5 stars Great Compilation Of 70s J. Geils Band Songs.......2005-08-25

THE BEST OF THE J. GEILS BAND is a great compilation of 70s songs by the J. Geils Band. This period shows them totally influenced by the entire Memphis-Chicago-Muscle Shoals-St. Louis-New Orleans-Detroit-New York-West Coast blues-R&B-soul-rock axis, making for their rawest music ever. Some great songs are missing, but what's here is generally top-notch.

4 out of 5 stars Good greatest hits CD........2004-06-13

I think that J. Geils Band is a real talented band and although I'm only a casual fan of them but they sure can make some good music and I'll never forget the first time I heard the whole version of Give it to Me and the song had me floored, I wish that the House Party: the Anthology had the full version instead of the edited version cause the edited version doesn't do it for me like the full version does, the other songs are really good and I remember hearing Whammer Jammer on Problem Child 2 years ago and I didn't know who the artist was, I was surprised that it was done by the one and only, the J. Geils Band, my only gripe is that it doesn't have Hold Your Loving on this CD but that is only a minor issue to me, if you're a new fan of the J. Geils Band, this is a good way to start and get this CD instead of Flashback.

4 out of 5 stars Picks Up The Best of EMI Days with Peter Wolf.......2006-03-11

The original best release of 1985 contains the live version of their early hit I DO and the cover of Wilson Pickett hit LAND OF A THOUSAND DANCES recorded live. Also it has previously unreleased track WILD MAN.

Legendary vocalist Peter Wolf departed the band around 1984 and released a solo LIGHTS OUT. Naturally this compilation tries to stress the aura of Peter Wolf rathar than simply showing the band's hits. As some of the tracks introduced here such as LOVE STINKS, FLAME THROWER, and COME BACK show J Geils. Band is the straight rock band rivaling the legend Billy Squire. Then since late 70s they took power pop approach and huge hits such as FREEZE-FRAME and CENTERFOLD were made. 10-track compilation is a bit too short to introduce their music but generally enjoyable.

Verdict: Centered on late 70s to 80s hits but enjoyable.
Rating: 82 out of 100. Maybe makes us want to listen to their songs more.
Recommended for late 70s to early 80s power pop fans.

3 out of 5 stars Frozen In The 80's.......2005-12-20

The J. Geils Band made a pretty good run of it in the late 70's/early 80's, but they really didn't do enough to warrant a greatest hits disc. In fact, the songs worthy of purchase on this album can be picked up on compilation discs full of groups with just a few modest hits.

On this disc we find the mammoth hit, "Centerfold," tucked nicely in the middle of solid hits like "Love Stinks" and "Freeze-Frame." Unfortunately, those three songs just about sum up the songs by the band that deserve to be labeled "hits." We also get "Flame Thrower," "Come Back," and "Land Of A Thousand Dances."

This disc really isn't that great. I bought it because of the three obvious hits. Other than that, I wasn't very familiar with the J. Geils Band. Buyer beware, this disc sounds as if it's trapped in 1981. If you don't like that stuff very much, don't bother with this one.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2005-10-27

Covering the the late 70's - early 80's incarnation of the band at the height of its MTV success, FLASHBACK really doesn't fit the bill as a greatest hits CD.With only 10 songs, from a limited time poeriod; it doesn't do the band justice. This CD is designed to cash in on their 80's success. The video hits are here, but if you really want something that represents this band, look elsewhere.

3 out of 5 stars CHANGE STINKS.......2005-10-13

Fans of this Beantown sextet's rafter-raisin', harp-saturated boogie n' blues might well gasp "WHA' HAPPEN???" upon spinning this second career compilation of new-wavey, MTV-ready hits. Like the Doobies, Dr. Hook, and Boston's other homeboys Aerosmith, J. Geils pulled a musical 180 midway through their careers. Upside: increased airplay, platinum sales...Downside: lousy music, decreased creibility. Sure, "Love Stinks" is a fun li'l ditty (Who can't relate to THAT sentiment?), and "Centerfold" was accompanied by a sexy video in its day, but this J. Geils Band is a Howlin' Wolf cry away from "Whammer Jammer" and "First I Look at the Purse". At least "I Do" is a live version of the same song on the superior first anthology, "Best of". 'Twasn't long after till Peter Wolf (a charismatic front man if ever lived one) split from J. Geils over creative differences and recorded..........the equally synthetic "Lights Out"! Sorry, but "Flashback" ain't nothin' but a dull party, folks.

4 out of 5 stars Great classic 80s tunes.......2005-10-10

J. Geils created a number of songs that became enduring classics. Anybody who has seen the Wedding Singer can point out one in particular - Love Stinks! That scene in the movie is hilarious, and shows just how much the song resonates with many people.

There are other songs on here that are great for screaming out at the top of your lungs. Freeze Frame gets you not only singing, but dancing your heart out. "Shoop! Shoop! Doobedobedoop!" :)

The songs keep rolling. Flamethrower is a great one, I love the rhythms here. Just Can't Wait is more straightforward rock-n-roll, with a simple but catchy meaning.

I Do is another perfect song to sing along with. I love the rhythms and harmonies in it.

When it comes to visuals, few guys growing up in the 80s could forget the "Centerfold" video which was quite racy for its day. Being female, the song was a little depressing, since few females in high school could match up to those models ...

In general, you get a bunch of great songs to sing and dance along to, and a boppy memory of the fun of the 80s.

As pricey imports go, this one is not too bad. This is certainly a better collection than the pitiful 10-track "Flashback." However, 2 important tracks (Just Can't Wait & One Last Kiss) are included on "Flashback" but aren't present here. Sigh! I know it would be nice to read a review which doesn't whine about what's missing. Believe me, it would be nice to write one. Be that as it may, if you only own one J. Geils CD, this is the one to have.
