Customer Reviews:
THIS IS SOME OF THE BEST WORKS BY BOB WELCH EVER........2007-03-25
BOB WELCH will forever go down in Rock n' Roll history and be remembered for having one of the strangest music careers of all-time. It seems that everytime WELCH quits a band, the band moves on and becomes famous. The biggest example of this was when he joined the legendary band FLEETWOOD MAC as their new guitarist along side Danny Kirwan in 1971 to replace the departed Jeremy Spencer. At this time, FLEETWOOD MAC has not gained the fame or recognition here in the states and mega-stardom for FLEETWOOD MAC was still a few years off. WELCH played guitar for FLEETWOOD MAC for four years until he decided to bow out in 1975 due to the band's legal battle with their manager throughout 1973 and 1974. With WELCH'S decision to bow out of FLEETWOOD MAC in 1975, it was definitely at the right time for FLEETWOOD MAC or it may have been fate or destiny since it was at that time that the band met up and recruited lead vocalist Stevie Nicks and guitarist Lindsey Buckingham. It was at this point with this new line-up that FLEETWOOD MAC would at last, become mega-stars which would transform the band's fortunes. Missing the opportunity, BOB WELCH would try his luck at a solo career spanning from 1976 to 1983 and had a pretty successful one too. It was also during this time period that WELCH met up and recruited his old friend Glenn Cornick on bass, Thom Mooney on drums and later Hunt Sales (Son of comedian Soupy Sales) on drums and formed the band PARIS. But commercial success for PARIS was not forthcoming quick enough so WELCH pulled the plug on PARIS soon after. "THE BEST OF BOB WELCH" is the result of the songs that WELCH recorded as a solo artist which chronicles WELCH'S career from the 1976 to 1983 period. In my opinion, "THE BEST OF BOB WELCH" is a true testament of the mastermind and musical creativity of a quiet genius and a fine fitting tribute to an individual who would grow and blossom into one of the greatest solo artists ever.
It is now time to let the music speak for itself and do all of the talking. This legendary compilation album begins with the band PARIS' hard Rocker "Black Book," the funkish hard Rocker "Big Towne 2061," the fast paced action packed Rocker "Heart Of Stone," the amazing hard Rocker "Blue Robin," the forever incredible WELCH trademark acoustic Rocker "Sentimental Lady," the a*s kicking STEVE MILLER influenced Rocker "Hot Love, Cold World," the forever merciless WELCH trademark Rocker "Ebony Eyes," another WELCH trademark killer Rocker "Precious Love," the slow soothing Rocker "Church," the slow and haunting acoustic "The Ghost Of Flight 401," the uplifting mild Rocker "Don't Wait Too Long," the mysterious and mystical mellow Rocker "Future Games," the blasting hard Rocker "Rebel Rouser," the humorous synthesized crazed mild Rocker "Man Overboard," the scary orchestrated and unorthodoxed Mild Rocker "B666" and the blistering previously unreleased hard Rocker "Don't Stop." May I also add that WELCH'S incredible lead vocals were sizzlin' red hot and hitting on their mark during the recording of all of these songs. WELCH'S amazing guitar licks and riffs were also hitting their mark perfectly and blended well with his vocals resulting in taking the songs to another level.
Overall, this is one hell of a compilation album worth seeking further into and checking out especially if you are a BOB WELCH diehard fan or a devout music collector. If you are a newcomer or a new beginner to the sound and music of BOB WELCH, this would not be a bad compilation album to start with. However, there are other BOB WELCH greatest hits compilation albums that you might also want to look and research further into and check out.
I would like to highly recommend purchasing this legendary compilation album to own as a valuable and important part of his or her own personal music collection. This compilation album will definitely prove to stand the test of time and will always be around to be enjoyed, appreciated and cherished for many years to come, NOW AND FOREVER. This is one great compilation album that all WELCH diehard fans and devout music collector's would not want to be without.
In closing, BOB WELCH has had an up and down then back up career for many years. BOB WELCH may not be as busy or as active in the music world as he once used to, but he still keeps himself extremely busy. In 1999, WELCH released an album entitled "BOB WELCH LOOKS AT BOP," a tribute to the "Be Bop" music of the 1940's. WELCH also writes a column for the music professionals website and magazine artistpro com and is an audio consultant for A.M.D. computers and for Steinberg Gmbh, The Audio Production Specialists. In 2003, One Way Records released BOB'S latest CD album; "BOB WELCH, HIS FLEETWOOD MAC YEARS AND BEYOND." I'm not sure when this announcement appeared on the bobwelch com website, but according to it, it appears that Reality Records is planning to release a new BOB WELCH album entitled "BOB WELCH, HIS FLEETWOOD MAC YEARS AND BEYOND TWO" in april 2006 or 2007? After doing research and seeing new information on him on the internet, I am convinced that the Rock n' Roll world has not seen or heard the last of BOB WELCH yet. WELCH has contributed and accomplished so much in Rock n' Roll that I still feel that he still has so much more to give. I get the feeling that we will all be hearing from BOB WELCH in the near future soon. So here's to you BOB. Thanks for the great memories. Keep Persevering. Keep The Faith. And as the saying goes, "AND THE REST IS ROCK N' ROLL HISTORY," need I say more? Thanks for reading my review and I hope that you have enjoyed reading it as much as I have enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also hope that you will read all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. BOB WELCH RULES. Long Live Rock n' Roll. Rock out always and take it easy. Forever In Rock, John L.
The Ghost of Flight 401.......2007-01-12
Welch is a musical enigma!.......2006-11-13
With that begin said, "The Best of Bob Welch" is definitely a 4-star album. Welch includes some of his work from his days with the group "Paris" as well as work from his group "Avenue M" and his later solo efforts. The strongest (and most familar) cuts to this album are found near the middle of the set. Those would be: "Sentimental Lady" (with 3 members of Fleetwood Mac assisting), "Hot Love, Cold World", "Ebony Eyes", and "Precious Love". Some of the others are almost as strong (even though not as well known) including "The Ghost of Flight 401", "Big Town 2061", and "Church".
If you enjoy Fleetwood Mac, America, Bread, Pablo Cruise, The Little River Band, and Carly Simon, you will enjoy this album
Enjoyable and a very good buy.......2006-09-22
IMHO Mr. Welch is at his best when he sings with a restrained style. He is also very capable playing with intensity when the notes demand it.
In the early 80's I had an LP with a photograph of him on the album cover standing in an empty room in front of a wall - behind him was an empty AC outlet. I thought this was a cool album cover for a highly accomplished rock guitarist. There was no hint of an electric guitar but the AC outlet got the point across. I no longer have the album. At the time I thought this was high quality rock material. I am not sure how it would sound today. I don't remember the title of the LP and I have been looking for a CD version of it. If anyone knows please drop a comment.
