For better or worse, John Williams has completely reshaped the art of the soundtrack. His scores for Star Wars, E.T., and Jaws are simply unforgettable, and his knack for tugging at our heartstrings is uncanny. John Williams: Greatest Hits 1969-1999 collects 30 years of the composer's best-loved themes into one double-CD package. You'll find all the soundtrack moments you'd expect from Indiana Jones, Close Encounters, and Schindler's List, along with a few surprises (The Reivers Americana-filled main theme and Williams's 1984 Olympic theme, for starters). Most of the earlier works have been digitally rerecorded by Williams, so while you may not get the original recording of these works here, nothing shows its age. And although we really do get only his "greatest hits" (the longest track is the nearly 10-minute-long Close Encounters theme), most of these soundtracks can be purchased in their entirety for the true aficionado. John Williams may be an acquired taste, but this set proves why--year after year--he scores some of the most successful films Hollywood can produce. --Jason Verlinde

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Great Compilation of Williams' Best Scores.......2007-07-26

This two disc CD does an excellent job of covering thirty years of Academy Award winner John Williams' greatest hits. It contains main title themes from films such as Star Wars, E.T., Jaws, Indiana Jones, Home Alone, and of course the best theme of them all (in my opinion), Superman. It also contains two principal themes from the summer Olympics that NBC has used in its broadcasts since 1996 when John Williams composed the album "Summon the Heroes."

The sound quality is excellent and I've been extremely pleased with the product.

Bottom Line: Great CD with unforgettable hits. Buy it today if you're interested in it.

5 out of 5 stars Beethoven is an insect compaired to this titian of composition........2007-07-18

In the past when I went to movies, I rarely thought about the music unless it was a popular song that was being played. I never realized how much the score had to do with the overall effect I felt while watching the show.

Once I started paying attention to the music and identifying different pieces that I enjoyed from different movies, I was suprized to realize that John Williams had composed many, many of them.

This CD contains possibably the greatest most timeless music I have heard. Sure, you, like my classical music loving boss, have probably already written off my opinion as foolish or ignorant. Honestly, I don't care.

I like Mozart, Bach and the rest, and they have their place, but their music doesn't move through me like Williams. While this collection is far from a box set of his work, all the most popular pieces are there: Raders March (Indiana Jones), Star Wars, Superman, Empire March (Darth Vader). None of the operas or preludes the other guys made up generate the experience I get from listening to the opening stanza of Superman.

While it is very hard to sing along to these pieces, if you have an office as I do, it makes great background music. Everyone who comes in is pleasently caught off guard and I enjoy watching them trying to place the various songs that are playing.

Even if you disagree that Williams is better than Wagner or Debussy, if you enjoy his music, you will love this CD. "These are the droids you are looking for."

4 out of 5 stars An excellent survey of this great film composer's music.......2007-06-15

John Willams' film music is of such high quality it still holds up away from its source material.

Williams not only has the talent to write memorable melodies but to expertly interpolate themes from the story into his scores, for example the drum rolls in "JFK" evoking the president's funeral procession and the mournful bugle calls in "Born on the Fourth of July".

Williams also employs a variety of styles, but never gratuitously, always to the service of the film. His "Jaws" theme is as legendary as the violin shrieks from Bernard Herrman's famous score for "Psycho".

The performances are excellent - only the "Born on the Fourth of July" performance exposes some thinness in the string section of the Boston Pops Orchestra.

There is much to enjoy here for film and music lovers alike.

5 out of 5 stars It's my second copy!.......2007-03-09

Depending on where you stand, this double-disc set is either where too much becomes too much, or just right. While most of Karen Carpenter's best is available on the more economical Singles 1969-1973, fans aren't likely to turn up their noses at the post-'73 hits that round out Yesterday. "All You Get from Love Is a Love Song" is nearly as bitter as the eternal "Goodbye to Love," while "Only Yesterday" is the best of their happy songs. And something we've always wondered: whose idea was it for them to cover Klaatu's "Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft"? --Rickey Wright

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Super colection of hits.......2006-03-15

This package contains 27 songs! with a beautiful recording, full sound with the songs that made them very famous, and what a reason for it! The one song that goes ahead to my personal taste is "Calling Ocupants of Interplanetary Craft" which calls for a peaceful contact with advanced civilizations on space. They show how to contact them telepathically!. It excedes the original arrangement by Klaatu. Overall Great buy!

4 out of 5 stars Their Blue Album.......2006-02-28

One of the best hit's packages ever put out was The Beatles collection, which contained many of their great songs, refer to as "The Blue Album", and was a double album set with 28 tracks and 2 hours of music.

This is the same idea, but with music of The Carpenters and it is also a great set. While fans will debate about some of the music missing on this 2 cd set, it contains most of their major hit's from the Billboard Hot 100 charts.

5 out of 5 stars Carpenters in one true collection.......2005-03-13

The album consists of two CDs and 28 songs. The first CD is more diverse and to me there are all sorts of songs in it. The second CD consists of more tranquilizing or rather sad songs. I think the producer wanted to make a distinction between the first and second CD. I think the CDs cover almost every great song Carpenters performed. I would say this is the most compact yet complete collection of songs you find about Carpenters.

Also the jewel box is a folding one. From outside it looks like any other CD box and seems to be holding only one CD. But inside there is a folding plate with two CDs on its both sides. This saves space and helps you put it in you CD rack with all other CDs.

In one word if you want to listen to Carpenters in one album, maybe this is one of the best CDs.

    5 out of 5 stars Sing!.......2004-01-16

When you play this 2CD collection, make sure you "Sing" with Karen. Certainly, this is very enjoyable song collection that even the casual fan would want. "Solitaire" is mysteriously not here, but other than that, no complaints. Since the Carpenters have had "who knows how many hit collections of various titles" in their catalog, this is your best choice to buy especially if you decide not to buy their box set. This collection will save you from buying "The Singles:1969-1973". Listen and "Sing"!

    5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Music.......2003-11-08

I bought this CD 2 disk set back in 1990.. (before the remastering version came out).. I have most of the Carpenters albums on CD, from 1969 on. This is great and the song progression on this 2 disk set goes great This has most of their top 40 hits. I grew up in the 1970's and hearing the Carpenters on the radio was as common as watching Scooby Doo on Saturday morning. Anybody near my age (36), heard this music, and loves this music, whether they admit it or not!!! Karen could sing as well or better than any one of our time. Richard was great as well, and they were a duo and complemented each others talents. I wish that we could see their appearances on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, or the specials that they had. In the 1970's.. we didn't cherish them as we do now, because we took them for granted and thought they'd always be making albums.. But, thankfully we can still enjoy listening to them on recordings..

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Apparently 1969 was a great year for hits (with parentheses).......2004-02-10

The final CD in the "EW" year by year look at the hits of the Sixties ends on a strong note with "Entertainment Weekly: The Greatest Hits 1969." There are only a pair of #1 hits from 1969 included in the dozen tracks collected here, but they are the only two songs to hold the top spot for six weeks: The 5th Dimension's fun medley of "Hair" songs, "Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In (The Flesh Failures), and the greatest one hit wonders of the decade, "In the Year 2525 (Exordius and Terminus)" by Zager & Evans. Apparently you needed parentheses to have a really big hit that year.

In terms of signature songs by other artists you have "It's Your Thing" by the Isley Brothers and Dusty Springfield's "Son of a Preacher Man." You will not find the big hits by the biggest groups, but decent songs by the next tier of groups, with "These Eyes" by the Guess Who, "One" by Three Dog Night, and "Crystal Blue Persuasion" by Tommy James & The Shondells. The problem would be that you probably have all of those, so your willingness to pick up this CD is going to be based on whether you want to add the other hits by the Friends of Distinction, Harry Nilsson, and Spiral Starecase. In the one hit wonder category there are two notable tracks with "Worst That Could Happen" by Brooklyn Bridge and "Get Together" by the Youngbloods.

Those last two might be the ones that tip the scales in this CD's favor because the only serious complaint here would be that you already have most of the songs. If you do not, this one could certainly fill a couple of holes in your music library.

        5 out of 5 stars NICE MIXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX.......2006-08-15

How can you ever beat a variety CD that has Mendicino and Good Old Rock and Roll...All songs are strong! The song by Cat Mother is one of the best rare rockers of all time. WAY TOO MUCH MONEY FOR THIS, THOUGH...30 dollars??

        5 out of 5 stars 10 of 12 good enough.......2005-12-24

The first ten songs are all GREAT not just good songs. Last 2 songs fall in the okay but not spectacular range for me but when you get 10 great cust out of 12 on a compilation, its rare.
