RIP, JERRY HADLEY 1952-2007.......2007-07-18
Among his numerous recordings of opera, concert and lighter works, this one CD best serves the late tenor's art. Arias, both familiar and not, exemplify his clear, clean singing, wonderful diction and musicality. Although it is currently unavailable, I'm hoping RCA will see fit to reissue it soon in memory of a truly fine American-trained artist and singer.
INTERESTING REPERTOIRE, WELL SUNG.......2003-11-14
While currently out of print BMG might well reissue the album so some comments are in order. The album has a repertoire that is, under any conditions, exceptionally demanding with the arias from Dom Sebastien, La dame blanche, Les Huguenots, etc., being among the most difficult to sing in the tenor literature. For the most part Hadley proves a wealth of beautiful, well posed tone running into trouble only when he must deal with troublesome top notes that have never been his forte. The top c-sharp taken in the aria "Seul sur la terre" from Dom Sebastien in pure head tone( read falsetto )is really stylistically correct but the versions by Marcelo Alvarez, Roberto Alagna, Luciano Pavarotti( as "Deserto in terra" ), and, of course, Alfredo Kraus are much more thrilling with the top note ringing out in full voice. Kraus was well into his 60s but his ageless voice took the top notes with consummate ease.
The arias from Lucia di Lammermoor, L'elisir d'Amore, Mignon, Lakme, and The Bohemian Girl are all well done with really beautiful tone and stylistic elan. The arias from Les cloches de Corneville, L'eclair, and The Rose of Castille and Sigismondo are well sung but so new to me as music that a critical evaluation is not possible.
The aria from Martha sung in the original German as "Ach, so fromm" is, at the climax, rather stressful and strained.
The sound is excellent and the direction of the English Chamber Orchestra by Richard Bonynge is a real plus for both Hadley and the listener.
Overall this album is worthy of Hadley's reputation as an outstanding lyric tenor who has proven his worth in any number of difficult, demanding operatic roles. Listen, for example, to his clear runs, etc. While Hadley isn't the ideal tenor for operas like Tosca, Il Trovatore, etc., he can and does provide much pleasure in the type of repertoire recorded here and in modern works.

Still doing it !!.......2007-04-19
I've had this collection on tape for many years, having earlier had much of the content on vinyl. About to buy the CD for reasons of practicality.
It really is a sublime collection and a constant reminder of just what a good band GF & The Blue Flames were in the mid-60's. As an Englishman now living in New Zealand I'm surprised to read that Georgie is so little known in the US.
For anyone really keen, you can try tracking down a VHS tape "Ready Steady Go - Volume 1". GF & BF's play Yeh Yeh live, at a time (1964) when very little live music was performed on British TV...........and the whole band really cooks. Coincidentally, the same tape will also provide the VERY first TV appearance by Georgie's more recent musical mate Van Morrison (singing with THEM), aged 18 at the time I believe.
Georgie is still going strong. I saw him perform less than two weeks ago (7 April '07) here in NZ. The voice is as strong and tuneful as ever (at 64) and the Hammond still rocks. Long may it remain so. He'll be at Montreux this year also.
Good-Time Rockin' Blues.......2001-06-04
To most Americans who have heard of him, the name Georgie Fame brings to mind his cheesy novelty hit Bonnie and Clyde. Others, who are more musically advanced, know of him as a sideman for and a producer of some memorable Van Morrison albums in the 1990s. But few of us ever knew him as a star in his own right. I bought 20 Beat Classics on the strength of an amazon recommendation and my curiosity about a musician who added much to the continuing success of the legendary Morrison. On the first listen I was less than impressed, but on subsequent listens the CD began to grow on me. Sure its primitive, at times it is even lame, but at other times it is excellent. Fame covers a lot of ground here, touching on compositions by artists as varied as James Brown and Willie Nelson. My favorites are the rocking Yeh Yeh, the jazzy Moody's Mood For Love, a very soulful rendition of Nelson's Funny How Time Slips Away, In The Meantime, Blue Monday, and I Love the Life I Live. The lowlight is My Girl and the switching of some lyrics in an otherwise decent rendition of Papa's Got A Brand New Bag. These should be listened to in the spirit of the times in which they were recorded. When heard from that perspective, Fame comes across as a hip musician whose play was very much on the edge in its day. If you liked the sounds of Them, the Kinks, and the Yardbirds you are almost sure to like this fine assortment of good-time rockin' blues.
An awesome addition to my CD collection........2000-11-20
Great original music as well as classic 60's R & B covers. His smooth style holds up to multiple listenings.
The King Of The 1960s London R&B Scene.......1999-12-02
If you weren't there, you wouldn't know. But Fame was the undisputed king of the R&B club scene, with a fanatical following. Why wasn't he a bigger star? Too sophisticated, too musical for an era that was gravitating to loud guitars and crass 'blooze' jamming. In contrast, there was nothing crass or gormless about Fame and the Blue Flames. Listening to this CD brings it all back. Until he popped up as Van Morrison's music director, I'd honestly thought he'd died. [And you should check out the 1990s CDs he appears on with Morrison, they're great]. Now what we need is for some record company to have the intelligence to re-release the whole catalog -- 'Live At The Flamingo', his early ska sides, 'Fame At Last,' 'Sweet Thing'. High spots of this record include an amazing 'Ride Your Pony,' and 'Funny How Times Slips Away.' One thing that made me smile: it's amazing how much this resembles some of Elvis Costello's output. I'm thinking of 'Punch The Clock,' but also some of his recent 'soulful' work. That, BTW, is a compliment, to both.
An excellent introduction to a music industry legend.......1999-02-18
Its a shame that Georgie Fame (and his seminal band the Blue Flames) has not enjoyed more recognition in the US for his talents and contribution to the music industry. Georgie (real name Clive Powell)is one of those cats who is more influential than famous. Check out 'Yeh Yeh" - lyrics by the legendary Jon Hendricks, music by Mongo SantaMaria) which was a monster hit in Britain in 1964. Or Georgie's version of Willie Dixon's "I Love the Life I Live" -- no doubt the best version of this tune ever recorded. Now, a quick trivia question. The drummer's style sounds familiar, doesn't it? Listen closely. Why that's Mitch Mitchell! Yep. Mitch left the Blue Flames in October of 1966 to join the Jimi Hendrix Experience. You can't go wrong with this CD. And while Georgie has done somne great stuff over the last 20 years (he's been Van Morrison's music director since about 1990 while recoding some great albums with the likes of Robben Ford and Ben Sidran, for example. John Mclaughlin-- pre Mahavishnu-- was Georgie's rhythm guitar player in late Sixties for another) the stuff on this disc-- all originally recorded between 1964 & 1966) will grab you, suck you in, blow your mind and make you a devotee of this jazz/blues giant.

Bravo, Maestro Fennell!.......2001-03-19
For the past 50 or so years, Frederick Fennell has probably been the "Best Friend" that collectors of band music in general and marches specifically could ever have imagined! Starting with monaural LP's in the 1950's, such as Marches For Twirling and British Band Classics with the incomparable Eastman Wind Ensemble, which he himself founded, Dr. Fennell has consistently set the standard for march recordings, and has been a tireless champion for wind ensembles as a serious musical medium.
This CD contiues that tradition, with a selection of marches that runs the gamut of styles that define a "march" (military/patriotic, circus, concert, collegiate, Spanish, Italian, etc.)The musicianship on this album is truly outstanding, and Maestro Fennell's understanding of tempo and attention to every detail are once again amply demonstrated. Also, although he has always provided a wealth of information concerning the marches themselves and their composers, I believe this marks the first time that he has also included information in his notes about his personal involvement in each number, a very nice touch! A few thoughts about some of the marches:
March of the Steel Men - This is a great demonstration of the genius of Harry Alford, who bridged the gap between the traditional march style and the "modern" march, which typically contains only two strains and much more complex harmonies, at which Alford excelled, both in his own compositions and in his numerous arrangements.
The Gladiator, El Abanico and Sol y Sombra - Interestingly, Dr. Fennell plays by far the slowest-tempoed version of The Gladiator I have heard, Sousa's first "hit", that I have heard, as if it were a Spanish paso doble, which, of course, it does resemble in style. On the other hand, El Abanico is taken at the fastest pace I know of, apparently being the very rare Spanish march meant to be played as a "quickstep". And Sol y Sombra is finally played as a traditional paso doble (two-step), suitable for the bull ring.
The Footlifter and Men of Ohio - Two fast-paced examples of why "Uncle" Henry Fillmore is considered by many march aficionados to be second only to Sousa as a march writer.
The Northern Pines - One of Sousa's last compositions demonstrates that the March King had not lost his touch for martial melodies over his long career, since this would certainly rank among his best.
Again, this album is among Frederick Fennell's finest recordings, and hopefully will not be his last march recording, but would be a fitting tribute to his long career if it is.
Wonderful recording. Great liner notes. Outstanding content........1998-12-01
If you like marches you have to love this recording. Fennell is truly the march recording king of our time and this could very well be his signature recording. The liner notes are a fascinating personal insight as to Fennell's personal attachment and involvement with each march. As an avid collector of march recordings, the arrangements on this disc are outstanding as are the phonics. The disc brings me back to my high school band days and maraches like Footlifter and Band of America just jump off the disc. A truly wonderful piece of Americana by a band legend

This album sucked. I hated it. What a rip off of 2 dollars. It makes me want to stab myself with a fork so I dont have to listen to it anymore. What a piece of crap. Avoid these 70s glam loser wannabees at all costs. I know you people feel all bad-ass saying you don't listen to popular music, but come on, this is too much. And as a note to the reviewer before me, it does not take too much to beat motley crue, even at their best.

BEING FROM CANADA, IVE HAD THE PLEASURE OF SEEING ROBIN BLACK AND HIS FORMER BAND THE BALLROOM ZOMBIES ON NUMEROUS OCCASIONS, ONE TIME ROBIN ACTUALLY LET ME ON STAGE TO VIDEOTAPE THE WHOLE CONCERT! THIS CD ROCKS HARD, BUT ITS REALLY ONLY A TASTE OF A LIVE SHOW. MOST OF ROBIN BLACKS APPEAL IS THE LIVE SHOW, AND BELIEVE ME, THIS GUY HAS MORE STAGE PRESENCE THAN KISS AND MOTLEY CRUE AT THEIR BEST; ALL THE PYROS AND ATTITUDE, AND ADD A COUPLE DOZEN ROUND HOUSES, AND YOU'RE ALMOST THERE....

This CD is what started it all. And what a start it was. I luv it to peices, and so will you. I bet you that by the time you listen to it for the first time, you wont be able to stop yourself from playing it again and again. So i highly recommend you buy it! They rock!

Customer Reviews:
A unique underappreciated artist of the British Invasion period.......2007-07-19
Georgie Fame was something of an oddity among the British Invasion artists of the mid-60's. Whereas most of his contemporaries were rooted in R&R or R&B, either covering or emulating existing hits from those genres, Georgie was heavily into jazz. His first hit, "Yeh Yeh," was a jazz instrumental for which words were later composed, and performed previously by the vocal jazz trio Lambert Hendricks and Bevan. The Blue Flames were a joy to watch, with a black conga player and a saxophonist who was a fundamental part of the music. The sax role was much more fleshed out by the BF's than, for example, the Dave Clark Five. Georgie's most memorable hit came later than the songs here, his soundtrack title to Bonnie and Clyde, with full fledged orchestration --- success commercially but a step backward artistically. Most of what you find here displays a fine artist, prepared to fly or fail with the music he loved. Get the video of "Ready Steady Go" in which they appear, if you can, and see for yourself how this band stands up as opposed to some of their lip syncing competitors. I only give it four stars because I just haven't figured out yet which compilation is really worthy of five. but you can be sure one of them out there does.
Room for 10,000 standing outside.......2007-02-04
I was a regular at the Flamingo back in the day, sweaty funky spliffy throbbing sexy grinding nights under the pounding Whisky-A-GO-GO upstairs, stumbling bleary-eyed and stoned at dawn to Paddington Station-was there the night his first album was recorded-i recognise my holler-most all his stuff is excellent-but if you want a real taste of him and the scene back then-get his first album Live At The Flamingo-listen to me holler-and remember as Rick the MC used to say "It's cooler outside".
Georgie Fame.......2005-08-16
Georgie Fame is a musical icon in the UK, but only a few hits made it to the States. Most of his songs, I believe were ahead of their time, most notably "Get Away." With it's weird blend of acoustic guitar, heavy horn section and Big Bee Hammond organ, it's not the kind of thing the sixties kids were used to hearing. But it's also one of those songs that can create an image--hovering in the air in front of the listener. Fame's songs were like that, and this album has many of them. Great music!
Classic British cover versions of US R&B, and some originals.......2000-07-28
Georgie Fame and the Blue Flames were one of a dozen or so bands who were nurtured at The Flamingo Club in London, in the late 1960s. At a time when American classic R&B (James Brown, Curtis Mayfield, early Ray Charles) was available only as expensive imports through a very few record stores, Flamingo artists introduced the music to British audiences. (Note that the Beatles had followed a similar path a few years earlier, introducing British listeners to Tamla-Motown, which also had been unavailable in the UK.) Even bands such as The Who included some R&B in their repertoire during this period; so did Rod Stewart (who appeared a few times at The Flamingo). But the R&B never really broke out of the club scene. Bands such as Zoot Money and Herbie Goins and the Night Timers remained obscure. Georgie Fame and the Blue Flames were the only Flamingo regulars who enjoyed any real national success, and they did it by diluting the R&B with a more pop-flavored product. Thus we have a strange crossbreed: British pop and American R&B that was already out of date when Georgie Fame started playing it. Personally I like the mix--but my nostalgia for that period (when I was a regular at the Flamingo) colors my judgment.
R&B/Jazz/Pop in it's finest hour. Love this guy........1999-01-31
Georgie Fame is simply one of the best R&B/Pop vocalists and organists around anywhere. This is a superb collection of Georgie in action. I strongly recommend this CD to all lovers of great music. A strong 60's feel with a powerful driving organ. Grab this one quick.

Brent David Frasier's cover of Marc Cohn's "True Companion" rivals the origional version. Heidi Noelle Lenhart has an amazing voice, and it shows, especially with the song "Far Cry". Known faces like Brian McKnight, AZ Yet, and 98 degrees also contribute to this one of a kind album. The best part about it is that it pays tribute to the origional Fame, by including two famous songs by Irene Cara, "Fame", and my favorite "Out here on my Own". The best song, however, is Molly Rebekkas's "You Gotta Want it", an anthum for any struggling artist to just give their dream all that they have.
One of the world's best albums.......1998-06-09
This is by far a great album. And the show is even better. I urge anyone who can on the East Coast to stay up til 2 to watch it on NBC.
