5 out of 5 stars more 80's again.......2007-02-14

Well, this had a couple songs I wanted. It's a good cd. some of the songs are on just about every 80's compilation there is though. So, if you own one 80's compilation you probably already have 1 or 2 of the songs on this cd. but it's a good quality cd. The music is reproduced very good, I amvery pleased that I bought this.

1 out of 5 stars What's so big about it?.......2006-12-08

Conceptually correct cover aside, VH1's Big 80s collection disappoints. That, or the title is completely misleading: nothing here has the dazzling, enormous-sounding production that has become a trademark eighties sound. Why? Nearly all are from the very early 80s, and nothing is from later 1986. Bombastic overproduction didn't emerge until about '87 or '88. Think Richard Marx, Def Leppard, Whitney Houston, Taylor Dayne, Bon Jovi. This difference is especially apparent because the early 80s offer sharp contrast by sounding very small, robotic, and claustrophobic. This should have been named something else. Big hits? Yes. Big-sounding? Not at all. Plus, the songs are overplayed already (except Cry), so you've probably heard them to death already or even flat-out own then.

If you want to up the slickness, up the drums, and up the charisma, check out artists and compilations with music from 1987 to 1989.

3 out of 5 stars Not the greatest compliation album.......2002-01-30

but it does have my signature hit, "Come On Eileen". This is one of the few one hit wonders that I like on this album. There were a lot of other songs from the 80's that I would have picked over "I ran", "Words", "Tuff enuff.." Enough said, the first half of the album is very good, but then it just starts to lose steam. It's as if they were running out of ideas as to what to put on the album. I didn't like these songs back in the 80's so why should I like them now. I guess that is the price I pay to get the few songs I did want.
I always loved the show, The big 80's on Vh1. And when this and the first c.d. came out, I bought them together. All in all, not such a terrible purchase. I like the first one much better, there are a better selection of songs.

5 out of 5 stars Eighties Eightites Eighties!!!!.......2001-04-24

One hit wonders and just good eighties tunes. This is packed with them sort tunes you miss from such a great era. I have so many eighties tapes and CDs I keep collecting. I think this captured several really good songs on it and they are hard to track down songs. When it comes to to collections this one is tops. I can listen to these songs over and over again. Never tire of them. Guess the eighties will never die while I'm still breathing. :) I knew all the songs on this CD by heart and if you're an eighties fan you will too. It's a great gift for the eighties fan in your life too. That's where I get most of my tunes. People know I'm a hopeless eighties fan. :)

3 out of 5 stars OK compilation.......2000-12-28

This is a compilation full of mostly good songs, but most of them have gotten really old by now, esp. "Mickey". Don't particularly like the song order, it's almost too spontaneous, even for my various taste. A Flock of Seagulls "I Ran" is among 1 of my favorite songs, but it got cut off at the end!! 1 saving grace is putting Peter Schiling's "Major Tom" last. One main reason I had gotten this a few years ago was to replace the bad copies I had taped off the radio years before, so it served its purpose at the time. But now with cd burners, I have no desire to buy any more 80's compilations cuz you can just make your own. All in all, it's a good introduction into 80's music for those who aren't too familiar with it, even mainstream ones like most of these are.

5 out of 5 stars Greatest Hair Band CD EVER!!.......2006-01-29

I LOVE this CD. It's got all the greatest hair band hits that defined the 80's. I was born during the 80's and rememer some of these songs growing up! If there is ever a greatest hair band album this would be it!

5 out of 5 stars awesome!!!.......2004-08-21

I was born in 1984, I'm young I know. But I grew up listening to bands like guns-n-roses, poison, ozzy osbourne, whitesnake, and so on, because of my dad. I grew out of that phase, got in with the boyband thing, until the late 90's when i re-discovered the great music that was the 80's. I fell in love with the power ballads, I can't begin to explain when listening to a great song like that feels like. Its completely awesome, and VH1 has done a great job diggin out the good music and the music that should still be, not the crap they are playing now.

5 out of 5 stars "[Come] On Feel The Noize!".......2001-07-18

If you liked the metal of the 80's you have got to get this CD. From Quiet Riot (my personal favorite), Poison, Warrant, Scorpions, Twisted Sister, etc...they're all here! Every song brings you back to when music was fun, loud and energizing! The louder the better! Life was one big party! This CD will bring back a lot of memories...enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars Could be better.......1999-08-13

I really enjoy this CD as I graduated from high school in 1990. All of these bands and songs bring back wonderful memories. I disagree with some of the song selections, however. How one can put any Whitesnake song besides "Still of the Night" on a rocking 80s compilation is beyond me. All in all a good CD, but there are certainly other compilations that rock a bit harder.....

5 out of 5 stars Way to go VH1.......1999-07-07

I like the direction VH1 is going with this CD. This is the third "80s" volume and the first that rocks!! I wish they would have dug a little deeper on some of the picks, but this will work. This will spend some time in my CD rotation!!

5 out of 5 stars Solid Sampler of 1980's Pop Music.......2006-11-30

I went to high school from 1982-1985, and I used to despise this music as empty and shallow. I preferred the raw rock and roll of the Beatles and the Rolling Stones and especially Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin.

But music tastes change, and now, the music from this era sounds amazingly better than I remember it. This nostalgic 80's cd contains 15 well known hits of the decade, including "We've Got the Beat" by the Go-Gos, "The Safety Dance" by Men Without Hats, "Cars," by Gar Numan, "867-5309/Jenny" by Tommy Tutone, "99 Red Balloons" by Nena, and more. The cd definitely emphasizes the new wave pop of the 1980s over other parts of the decade, and some will find this frustrating.

But this was a fascinating part of the decade and so I don't mind at all. A great cd and worth getting if you don't already have these songs.

5 out of 5 stars DOWN TO MEMORY LANE.......2003-11-17

this disc is wonderful, just pop it in & sit back listen to memories fly thru your head as you listen to this disc, mj & prince & madonna are overated alittle. besides their's always another disc for that to come down the road anyway .

4 out of 5 stars a cool 80's set.......2002-02-14

this is a cool 80's set.Culture Club"Time Clock of the Heart" is still Slammin then of course Gary Neuman's "Cars" that was the Jam.some cool tracks here.a good compilation overall.

5 out of 5 stars A trip down the "One Hit Wonder" Lane..........2001-11-27

I was in junior high and high school throughout the 80's, and can remember hearing the songs on this album umpteen times. For the most part, the songs that appear here are mostly one hit wonders or the biggest hits from some of the acts that appear, like The Go-Go's and Night Ranger.
Some selections are a bit obscure, and aren't as big hits as others. That is what makes the album so great. You'll find a few songs here that you may not have heard in a long time.
Put it on and take a stroll down memory lane. You will have a wicked awesome time!
This is good background music for an 80's theme party too..I have yet to do it myself, but I have thought about it. There are some good dance songs, "Safety Dance" is probably the best.

5 out of 5 stars Hooray for the 80's.......2000-07-23

I just got this CD and I adore it. There is nothing that the 80's can't cure. Hooray, I say, hooray for the 80's.

4 out of 5 stars A surprise to someone who didn't know the songs.......2004-02-16

When I bought this CD, I wanted only one song: "House of Pain" by Faster Pussycat. I knew a couple of the other songs, like "When the Children Cry" by White Lion and "The Search Is Over" by Survivor (which I had never thought of as a "heavy-metal power ballad" but like nonetheless).

Surprise! There are some great songs on here! "Don't Close Your Eyes" by Kix; "Goodbye" by Night Ranger; and "Fly High Michelle" soon became my favorites. I love buying a CD and finding out that you either know more songs than you thought you knew OR discover some great new songs that you can't believe you've never heard before.

BOTH were the case for me with this CD. So I suggest that even if you don't know all of the songs on this compilation, give it a try. There are only a few songs I skip when I listen to this CD. Good collection.

5 out of 5 stars Forget the Nineties!!.......1999-10-30

For the 23+ crowd, take a nostalgic journey back in time when music had real soul and emotion. Some of the best rock ballads from the 80s are all in this CD; Whitesnake, Slaughter, just to name a few. It's music like this that puts to shame the empty sounds of the 90s. Accolades to VHI for making an effort to revitalize a style of music that didn't get the recognition it deserved!

3 out of 5 stars Bit of a disappointment.......1999-03-03

It was nice to get some of these songs on one collection, but I thought about half of the songs were throw-aways. For instance, where is "Man in Motion" from ST. ELMO'S FIRE? Still worth having but not as good as VH-1's other 80's collections.

The '80s were a renaissance for popular music, riding a (new?) wave of garage, punk, and early technorock, along with retro pop and stylized funk. While there's no funk or R&B to be found on the 15 tracks of Christmas: The Big '80s, some of the touchstone artists from the era--and a few dinosaurs like Queen--are well represented, among them the Waitresses and their classic "Christmas Wrapping," perhaps the most oft-licensed pop song in memory. Heavy on the Brits, the disc regains its Yankee roots with rocking songs by George Thorogood and the Destroyers, the Ramones, and Los Lobos, who provide an instrumental, polka-Hendrix reading of "Rudolph the Manic Reindeer." While many of these tracks can be found on better collections, it's hard to slam a holiday album that ends with Bob and Doug McKenzie's "Twelve Days of Christmas," eh? --Martin Keller

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars The Christmas songs you remember and missed from the 80s.......2003-12-15

"VH-1: The Big 80's Christmas" brings together 15 holiday songs, most of which you probably heard at some point during that decade, including the classic David Bowie and Bing Crosby duet of "Peace on Earth/Little Drummer Boy." If you do not have this particular track in your collection then this album is one way of picking it up. The other keepers are the Waitresses doing the ultimate Christmas rap, "Christmas Wrapping," the Ramones ripping through "Merry Christmas (I Don't Wanna Fight Tonight)," and the cover of John Lennon's "Happy Christmas (War Is Over)" by the Alarm. After that it is a question of what speaks to your tastes, which means enjoying a couple of songs by performers I like that I do not remember hearing way back when, Pat Benatar's "Please Come Home for Christmas" and Kate Bush's "December Will Be Magic Again." Then you have to make up your mind about Los Lobos's interesting take on "Rudolph the Manic Reindeer" and it is a good thing that the "Twelve Days of Christmas" as rendered by Bob and Doug McKenzie (eh) is the last track on this album because there is just nowhere to go after that one.

4 out of 5 stars Very good 80's compilation.......2003-11-05

I think that this CD is definitely worth adding to your Christmas collection. It does lack a few songs that I would have liked to have, but it is definitely worth owning. (especially if you can get it for less than $10)

2 out of 5 stars The 80's Wasn't The Christmas Music Era For Sure........2001-12-22

The Big 80's Christmas CD is the worse Big 80's CD...mainly because the 80's wasn't the decade that delivered any good Christmas music...and the singing i great on the CD, but the lyrics are farfetched, and it basically hurts all of the other Pop Christmas songs to come.

While if find most of the songs on this CD are great and from the 80"s (they) forgot a few. One of them being Sting's "Gabriels Message" and how on earth could (they) forget the most memorable 80's Christmas song..."Do they know it's Christmas time" by Band-Aid. That WAS the 80's! (...)

2 out of 5 stars Edge of Christmas Redux.......2001-12-10

All of the songs on this CD have been released over and over again on various compilations over the years. Most of them are on Edge of Christmas. Come on VH1, get with it. I won't be buying this one.

5 out of 5 stars Some good stuff here..........2005-07-11

Being born in the early '70s, I fortunately, or unfortunately (however you wanna look at it) missed the '70s rock scene and then grew up through the '80s Hair Metal scene. While the mid-to-late '70s had bands like Boston, Led Zeppelin, Lynard Skynyrd, the mid-to-late '80s had gaboons of what were known (post-humously) as Hair Metal bands. These times, in my somewhat biased opinion were some of the best years and times of the rock music history.

I first got into heavy rock and metal around '86 when Bon Jovi hit it big with "Slippery When Wet", and then a year later with Whitesnake's self-titled album "Whitesnake". Talk about major hair metal! This stuff was good, but like most pop-type music, one grows tired of it rather quickly. So by 1988, I was looking for something a little heavier. That's when I discovered bands like Anthrax, Megadeth, and Metallica. It all when down the "heavier" hill from there. But anyway...

What you get with VHS's Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 of "Big 80's Hair", is a nice compilation of some of the best well known songs of the hair metal era. Even though I never owned any of these band's albums, I knew most of these song by heart because of the over-saturation they got on the MTV circuit. (You know, back when MTV actually played videos?)

If you grew up during this era or got exposure to this stuff later in the bleck '90s music scene, you'll probably love reliving these songs for the nostalgia. The difference between bands of this era and the dreck the industry puts out today, is that these bands had talent, and most of all charisma. I don't how some of the artists today could've made it past Simon Cowell, let alone get a recording contract. This is why, to this day in the ripe ol' age of 31, I have stuck to my ol' favorite genre of music...power metal. Very seldom do you get a bad band.

But back to "Big Hair"...if you're looking to relive some of these old classics, don't hesitate picking up some of these compilation albums. Then if you feel like you like some of these bands more than others, look for some of their own albums, such as their 'Best ofs' or whatnot.

5 out of 5 stars This album ROCKS!!!! Smart selection of rock bands! .......2005-06-27

This album ROCKS!!!!! I even played it on the road trip last summer (2004) in Alabama! The guitars are so charged up on this album! How Yes' rocking Owner of A Lonely Heart and Queen's Another One Bites the Dust weaves into Foreigner's Urgent! And they thought smart to include Pat Benatar's Heartbreaker and Billy Idol's Rebel Yell!!!! They were even smart to include Duran Duran's The Reflex, as it fits well with the arena rock concept! This whole CD would sound great playing in any arena around the world! There are some surprises, like Genesis' Land of Confusion, Asia's Heat of the Moment, 38 Special's Hold On Loosely and the album takes a bluesy turn with Dire Straits' Sultans of Swing. And the album closes big and loud with Loverboy's full-charged song Working for the Weekend! They thought smartly on the vibe, feel and sequence of the songs. Get ready to crank up the stereo to 10 or 11 (but don't hurt your ears too much) because this CD will surprise you and have you dancing and rocking!!! You will feel like you've been run over by high winds after you hear it!!!! It's that good!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Mix of 80s sound.......2000-10-13

2 out of 5 stars Just Couldn't Keep It Down.......2000-10-12

I almost bought this album.. thank goodness for the song list that included such sad, sorry songs as "We Built This City", "Hold On Loosely", and "Heart of Rock & Roll". I saved a lot of dollars. The rest of it had some promise. I am a HUGE fan of '80s music, but these songs were so over-played, I'm still sick of them. What about "Play The Game Tonight" by Kansas or "Sunday Bloody Sunday" by U2?

VH-1's latest CD "The Big 80's-Arena Rock" is quite good-The listener will hear a cross section of the types of songs that dominated the airwaves-My two favorite tracks are "Sultans Of Swing" & "Working For The Weekend"-If you're still feeling nostalgic for the 1980's,you might want to consider giving this CD a listen-Scott Burton

1 out of 5 stars ANNOYING!!!!.......2002-10-02

The most annoying pop stars all came from the 80's.As much as I hate the poppy cheesey stuff of the 90's and todays,80's pop is the most aggravating.True, there is no way anyone on this CD is more aggravating than all europop(such as Eifell 65),but about everyone on here gets on my nerves.Every song on here is cheesy and ... and the lyrics make you SCREAM!!Walking On Sunshine is the most aggravating song on this CD.She Drives Me Crazy will drive you crazy(or insane). If you love cheesy music that is repetitive and annoying, then this CD is for you.

Peace Out.

4 out of 5 stars Good CD Overall, but The Song Choices Could Of Been Better........2001-12-23

The Big 80's Pop gives Vh1 alot of credit as a CD distributer...but the song choices on this CD weren't the best. The Bangles, Beach Boys, and a few of the others were chosen greatly...but we didn't need some of the song songs like, "Too Long For Goodbyes"...which didn't do anything for the 80's, but make it less popular.

2 out of 5 stars It would be helpful...........2001-05-19

If you knew what was on it before you bought it...

4 out of 5 stars most of the songs on this CD are good.......2001-05-18

The thing that I like about this CD is that it covers the pop music from the 80s as a whole. It does not concentrate on one specific part of the 80s. It also has some great pop songs. "Walking On Sunshine","She Drives Me Crazy", and others are included on this CD.
