5 out of 5 stars Vanessa's First Introduction.......2006-07-29

This is a small yet compelling first single from singer/songwriter Vanessa Carlton. The main track, "A Thousand Miles" is of course, catchy and infectuous. Even today, the song scores with listeners and has, without a doubt, gained new fans thanks to the film "White Chicks".
But the big gem on this single is a more beautiful version of "Twilight" (this song is the final track on Be Not Nobody). The piano playing is gorgeous!
The enhanced portion (for computer) contains the video of "A Thousand Miles" and some nice publicity photos of Miss Carlton herself.

5 out of 5 stars "I LOVE IT!!!!".......2005-09-04

I first heard the song on the movie, "White Chicks" and just fell in love with it. (I'm sure that I'm way behind the times on this one however...) but...I LOVE IT! Now I listen to it while driving sometimes.

5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous masterpiece.......2005-08-20

No doubt one of the best songs of 2002, this pleasant, and refreshing song revolutionizes the music industry. In irrisistable solitude, Carlton delivers such amazing piano technique. It is highly commendable. Riveting in passion...

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Wonderful.......2004-10-02

No matter how many times I hear it I still always enjoy it. And the person commenting on Tori Amos... well I won tickets to her concert (Tori) and she is not exactly the best singer buddy! And- Jewel... have you listened to any of her recent songs... including the song that was on the radio about the time that "A Thousand Miles" was, "Standing Still"... she has become "teeny bopper like" too, my friend.
Although some may comment on the overused subject matter of the song, keep in mind that this was her debut song- and which song to you think the record label would choose, without the risk of rejection from some of the other songs?.... Poppy music is self-explanatory... POPular, which in turn means more sales for the record label. As I am sure we have heard from hundreds or thousands of mainstream artists, they have little control over what the record label decided to release. A few exception off hand I can thing of would be Eminem- since he basically runs that label... lol. So for all of you critics who have bought this- if you thought the song was too "poppy" for you when you heard it on the radio, why'd you buy the single anyways? Just go back to your Joni Mitchell music and be smug. 'Nuff said.

1 out of 5 stars Not Very good/ From a musician.......2003-11-14

This is a song for the teeny bobbers...The piano playing is very simple...and for those who don't play music might think it is great... The truth is... Music wise ..It is very horrible...I am actually teaching a neighbor kid (that wants to learn) this song on piano..I heard it once.. and I got it down..So it very simple for beginners...She is not very talented...If I heard her play some thing classical and master it....Then I will give her my props....

5 out of 5 stars Channeling the Old Time Sound.......2003-06-15

Back in the seventies I used to drive from Norfolk, Virginia every August to attend the Old Time Fiddlers Convention in Galax, Virginia. Galax is located in Southwest, Virginia and is in the heart of the area considered to be one of the principal birthplaces of old time country music, the `Oh Brother' sound. Some of the best picking at this festival was not on the stage, but in the jam sessions that used to take place in the horse stalls around the perimeter of the field. These would last long into the night and the music was simply mesmerizing. The highest compliment I can think to give this CD is that Dirk Powell and company have channeled the sound from these jam sessions closer then any recorded music I have ever heard. And it's not all just rockin' mountain trance/dance music either. There are slow beautiful mournful pieces and wonderful vocals as well. I have been collecting this type of music for the past thirty years and without question "If I go ten thousand miles" is now my all time favorite old time CD.

5 out of 5 stars Old Time Music is Alive and Well.......2001-02-10

I have purchased 3 copies of this CD: the first in 1996 at Merlefest where I first heard Dirk Powell, the second a few months later for my sister who plays clawhammer banjo, and a third at Christmas 2000 for a friend here in Wichita who is learning clawhammer. Why? Because Dirk is one of the best Old Time(OT)players around. His heart is in the tradition of this music. Dirk plays banjo, clawhammer banjo, fiddle, and guitar. He is accompanied on this CD by the likes of Tim O'Brien, John Herrman, Tom Sauber, Jim Miller, and his wife Christine Balfa.

My favorite track is gospel tune, I Am The Man, Thomas, with O'Brien on mandolin and two members of the Mamou Playboys singing harmony. (Oh yeah, Dirk plays Cajun music with his wife's band, Balfa Toujours). Close second is Tim singing a chilling version of Pretty Polly, then Lonesome Dove with Dirk on fiddle. There are also wonderful instrumental tracks with fiddle, clawhammer, and guitar.

"Old Time music - it's better than it sounds", is a joke you often hear around jams because the more authentic it is the less palatable it is to the average listener. But not this CD - it's authentic, and it sounds great!!

5 out of 5 stars Great Song.......2004-08-22

I love this song, the piano, her voice is outstanding. Couldn't be any better.

1 out of 5 stars Floating, tuneless, meaningless.......2004-01-17

As (at the time) a lover of female singer/keyboardists, I was tempted to buy this when i saw it in a local record store in Melbourne, where there is very little "alternative" music except violent loud noise available.

However, the song "A Thousand Miles" can only be described as tuneless and floating. there is very little solidity in the song, so much so that it becomes really tuneless. Her voice lacks the feminine expressiveness that I have come to admire in my adulthood, being rather bland and lacking any kind of melodic beauty. The piano playing also seems to have no feel behind it, with the result that she never appears to have real skill beyond that of the piano players of the notorious 1970s "beautiful music".

It is not surprising that the "pop" fans of Australia lapped this song up, but it really has little to recommend it. Rather, one could hear some Kate Bush, Cocteau Twins, or better still such key influences as Laura Nyro, Steeleye Span or Fairport Convention to see the essential female contribution to the music world in the last forty years. Finding these artists is certainly worth the effort.

5 out of 5 stars Enourmous British Vanessa Carlton Fan!.......2003-05-19

I'd never heard of Vanessa Carlton until I heard this song. It was awesome and I couldn't believe how pretty and talented Vanessa was! I'd definitaly walk a thousand miles to hear this song! Excellent song, Well done Vanessa!

4 out of 5 stars Sensational song but the other two aren't great.......2003-05-07

This is a sensational song but the others on this CD aren't anything special. There's no superb piano action in the songs Twilight and Wanted. Twilight is live and granted Vanessa does play all right live the song's not that great. This does have the Thousand Miles film clip on the CD which isn't a bad film clip. The CD single is worth buying for the excellent Thousand Miles song as well as the film clip but if you've got the album with the song on it then don't bother.

4 out of 5 stars great piano hook!.......2003-02-20

What hooked me to this song was the piano hook you hear throughout the verses of this song. It's melodic, catchy and soulful, too bad I can't say the same for her voice, but this song got a grammy nominee and I wish her the best of luck.

    Album Description

The CD was produced by the Iron Mountain String Band for Peach Bottom Records. It was recorded at Fox Fire Recording Studios (Van Nuys,CA) and engineered by Rudi Ekstein in the year 2000; mastered by John Golden; assembled by R.T.I. (Camarillo, CA). The cover and booklet were designed by Tania Dugatkin.

This is the Iron Mountain String Band's fifth album. The selections feature many old-time standards. Songs that date from the Civil War include "Ridin' With Old Mosby", said to have been made by a member of John Mosby's Confederate cavalry band, which was recruited in Southwest Virginia, and "Rebel Soldier", the bitter reflection of an "unreconstructed" rebel. "False Sir John" is an old ballad of British Isles origin. "Cumberland Gap" hearkens back to the pre-Revolutionary War gateway to the Ohio Valley and beyond. Other songs reflect the tenor of Appalachian life, such as "Train On The Island", "Ten Thousand Miles", "Tempe", "Clinch Mountain Home" and "Short Life Of Trouble." Among the stocks-in-trade of this musical tradition are instrumental dance tunes such as "Polly Put The Kettle On", "Black Mountain Rag", "Liberty" and "Mississippi Sawyers." The people whose music this was were a restless lot, with a rich oral tradition. Their music reflects both the rowdy and the plaintive sides of life, and hence the title of the album "If I Go Ten Thousand Miles."

          Album Description

Another Thousand Miles is a self-written and self-produced collection of songs that borders somewhere on the edge between rock and country. It's a combo of soulful vocals, nearly all acoustic instruments, with a dash of electric guitar, and features bluegrass great Mike Marshall on mandolin and fiddle. Lyrics are deep, insightful and yet have edge. A compilation of trials, travels, and tribulations turned into stories. Big Steve Earle influence, but though a girl's eyes.

5 out of 5 stars Very nice songs and music, check out Brigitte DeMeyer.......2001-02-03

Until very recently I'd not heard of Brigitte DeMeyer. A friend told me of her music. Gorgeous songs, a beautiful and nuanced soulfully country edged voice, a batch of killer musicians including stellar guitar work by Chris Rossbach (who is in his own D'Amphibians band and plays with my drum hero, Mr Joseph Zigaboo Modeliste!) and Mike Marshall is just icing on this absolutely delicious cake. I love americana, so-called alt.country, y'all ternative and folk --- this ranks up right there with most of what I've been listening to the last few years. Go hear Brigitte live if you get a chance, and BUY THIS excellent self-produced effort, "Another Thousand Miles". I love "We're All Going In", "Sycamore Sadie" and "Horse Hunk" with its lead in by Rossbach, truly blazing, reminiscent of the lead in to "Devil in Disguise" by the Flying Burrito Brothers. I'm giving this a 5 out of 5, to keep this record perfect. YOU go listen to it and try to give it a 4!! All 8 of the tunes are great. I put it on for the first time ever this a.m. and listened to it, I think, twelve times straight through! You go girl!!!!!! Mike Emerson on sweet piana, Paul Olguin on bass, Greg Thomas on drums round out the Brigitte DeMeyer band, and a helluva a band it is. Hey, where can I see this really cool songwriter live??? Why didn't anyone tell me about her before. I'd compare her to someone, but I guess she is uniquely Brigitte DeMeyer. Tom "Wazzup" Montgomery www.pauserecord.com www.jambase.com fan of Iris (Dement), Stacey (Earle), Ana (Egge), Kasey (Chambers) and NOW Brigitte (DeMeyer!)

5 out of 5 stars Down home rhythms with an edge!.......2000-11-07

Brigitte Demeyer's music is like a bowl of hot, spicey chili... good down home rhythms with an edge.

          5 out of 5 stars Great Stuff!.......2000-09-20

Brigitte Rocks!!! A great debut album! I look forward to adding more of her music to my collection as soon as its available. She's got an expressive, soulful voice and a great poetic songwriting talent. These, in addition to her own musical prowess and group of great musicians make for a special treat.

The summer was filled with alot of horrible hits, and Vanessa Carlton's hit A Thousand Miles is no exception.I have always hated this song, but it just became much more aggravating when it went popular.Summer songs are supposed to usually be catchy, not stupid like this one.

            5 out of 5 stars a great song and a great artist.......2002-10-06

Vanessa Carlton is a great artist. She has a very interesting voice, sometimes soft and sweet, sometimes strong and moving. Her compositions are very diverse, her piano playing is perfectly suited to her voice and her music, and 1000 miles is surely one of the best pop song I've heard in a long time. Check out the album, it's full of great songs, my favorite being "Pretty Baby". It's great to hear Vanessa Carlton in the middle of all the commercial ... we are served every day on the radio and the tv. I can't wait to see her live in France.
