Album Description

Possessing dazzling instrumental chops and an absolute mastery of acoustic musical styles, The Waybacks are an eclectic quintet, steeped in an array of Americana idioms. Whether mesmerizing audiences at intimate venues or creating a sensation at major festivals, the band has brought its onstage alchemy to enthusiastic fans far and wide. On From the Pasture to the Future, the band has captured that aesthetically pleasing mix while adding a bit of spit and polish courtesy of esteemed producer Lloyd Maines. Follow The Waybacks on their their collective muse through a landscape littered with driving, melody-laden rock ("Petrified Man"), an elegant fiddle waltz ("Bluebird Waltz"), a Kinks cover reinvented with New Orleans second line inflections ("Motorway") and a jazz-tinged rumba (Chick Corea's "Armando's Rhumba").

I was not sure I wanted to try a group I had never heard of before. I am glad I took the chance, it is a very nice cd. I like a cd I can listen to all the songs on with out having to skip one I don't like.
Thanks Amazon

5 out of 5 stars Another great CD from the acoustic kings.......2006-05-30

This is the most entertaining and talented group of musicians on the planet. Seeing them live is a treat, but if they're not coming your way, snap on your seatbelt and give this a listen. Great stuff from real deal musicians.

5 out of 5 stars Something for Everybody.......2006-05-27

A great cd with something everybody can sink their teeth into, from rock to jazz to celtic. An eclectic mix of well played music, some sweet, some sizzling.

5 out of 5 stars Totally Awesome.......2006-05-26

I received my new CD with high expectations, as The Waybacks have been promising this new CD for many months. I listened to it many times over the first few days and continue to listen to it. The instrumentals were out of sight....my personal favorite is Hot Kranski, followed closely by Armand's Rhumba, and Blue bird waltz. Stevie has done another awesome job with his "Petrified Man" and "The Blacksmith". I really like his ballads. I would highly recommend listening to this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Another great CD.......2006-05-26

I knew the latest CD "From the Pasture to the Future" would be great! The songs are true to Wayback tradition. Saw most of them performed live; look forward to the next CD. These guys are going to be around for a long time.

The guitar blows you away, great rhythm great sound. Saw them live last night and ACTUALLY paid the $10 for the album (usually CD is given away free). This is just really innovative, chill music that you can't go wrong with. Check it out and tell me otherwise.

4 out of 5 stars That's the way the guitars should sound.......2006-01-07

Great cd. The sound of the guitars is exactly as it should be. The vocals are also very good. The songs are really touching. Slightly reminds "Red house painters".
Don't miss this one.

5 out of 5 stars wow. this is the one........2005-09-04

I loved their last couple cds, but this one is the one. The Red Thread really seem to have hit their groove on this one. Every song is meticulously crafted, but none sound alike. They have a sound of their own but incorporate so many influences. A must have.

4 out of 5 stars Could be their strongest album yet.......2005-09-01

This album has it's own sound. Some might say that it shares a musical space alongside artists like The Sadies, Calexico (but more upbeat) and the Pernice Brothers. Jason Lakis' vocals pull you right in and at times are reminiscent of Evan Dando. There is a good balance between up tempo -almost pop tunes, and the deeper dimensions of a slower introsepective.

This album could be the strongest of their three, with winners like "Wax Museum,"
"Ship in the Attic" and "Treasure Island."

Album Description

Tin Heart is a collection of 11 original Americana tunes rooted in country, folk, bluegrass, and pop. These plainly, richly sung renditions are arranged with the tasteful playing of mandolin, guitar, upright bass, percussion, cello, fiddle, and pedal steel. Players include the Jan Smith Band (Tom Proutt, Jeff Vogelgesang, and Gerald Soriano) and well-respected songwriters Terri Allard and Danny Schmidt on harmony vocals. The recording focuses equally on Smith's lyric writing, her singing voice, and the seasoned musicianship of the players accompanying her.

Smith's songwriting has been inspired by the work of artists such as Merle Haggard, Dolly Parton, Joni Mitchell, James Taylor, and Townes Van Zant, and her style is comparable to that of Lucinda Williams, Gillian Welch, Alison Krauss, Natalie Merchant, Michelle Shocked, and Emmylou Harris, among others.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Candle in My Window.......2007-05-12

Jan Smith's "Tin Heart" is a delightful gem that flew beneath my musical radar screen until recently. While her 2006 CD "29 Dances" on the Landslide label captures attention, the Louisville native's earlier effort is well worth the search. Fans of Iris DeMent may find Smith's unadorned folksy style appealing. Jan's husband Jeff Vogelgsang lends musical support on mandolin. Her songs encompass a range of feelings from wistful quiet reflection to peppy toe tappers. Of my two favorites, "Gorham Mountain" is my choice for best track on the CD. The melody is strong and original with Jan's breezy vocals, "As the sky turned to black, I decided to go back, head on into town where I had no friend." "Ionesco's Chair" presumably has something to do with the absurdist playwright Eugene Ionesco. Again, Smith writes a melody brimming with energy, "You'll be the anchor & the steam showing up in every dream; You're the candle I am burning in my window." The CD concludes with the lovely "Fisherman" with a pretty melody and Jeff's mandolin gently capturing the listener's attention, "I don't want nothing but love anymore; I cannot exist without water; so I stand on the side, but the waves & the tide, they carry me out, ever farther out." Other tracks like "Rum in My Morning Coffee" & "Every Dish in the House" are also strong. "Tin Heart" is an excellent release, homespun and endearingly folksy. Bravo!

5 out of 5 stars Great voice, good to great songwriting.......2004-10-12

I was fortunate enough to see Jan Smith playing in San Jose at a coffee shop, and bought this CD from Ms. Smith herself at the intermission.

Man, she has a really lovely voice. And certainly has the talent to write straightforward, unpretentious songs that express simple to complex ideas everyone can relate too. She has apparently no interest in being edgy or take big risks with her material, but she doesn't need to. It's consistantly excellent.

I found "Your Momma Don't Care" and "Gorham Mountain" to be uplifting songs, but not everything is sunny and wonderful on songs like "Rum in my Morning Coffee" and "Dime on the Floor". A hidden gem I think you'll be glad to find.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding songwriter, great voice, superb musicians!.......2002-12-24

Jan Smith's "traditional" songs are about the hazards and joys of modern times. Her lyrics are straightforward and simply poetic--not a pretentious obscurity in the batch. Her singer's voice is the natural extension of her writer's voice: beautifully clear, sure and honest. And the music: the melodies are uncluttered and gorgeous, played by a band of accomplished musicians who obviously love what they do (pay special attention to Jeff Vogelgesang on mandolin).

Uncomplicated songs about complicated things--isn't that what folk music has always been about? Jan Smith's "Tin Heart" is the best contemporary folk recording I've heard in years. Listening to it makes me feel good. I am not comparing her to anyone; I am a big fan of Natalie Merchant, Iris DeMent, Gillian Welch, The Be Good Tanyas and John & Mary, so if you like any of those better-known performers, you owe it to yourself to be one of the first to hear Jan Smith. The soaring vocals on "Gorham Mountain" alone are worth the price of the CD.

5 out of 5 stars Deserves more recognition!.......2002-11-09

I've heard a lot of Charlottesville singer/songwriters, and none come close to the originality and purity of Jan Smith. In a town full of pretentious artists, Jan's music stands out as decidedly UNpretentious. You can hear the hard work of her patient songwriting come through on every track. Her lyrics are honest and the kind an Everyday Joe would appreciate. She doesn't try to sound overpoetic; she teases you with certain lines, double meanings, and vivid images. When you get sick of being bashed over the head with pop radio, this is a great CD to remind you what music should really be about. (By the way, the musicians in the band complement each other well. The mandolin player absolutely smokes the strings.)

5 out of 5 stars An Up & Coming Artist who has arrived!.......2001-03-08

This is the one. Of all the previous df/SONiA stuff, this is the best! It has a from-the-gut confidence to it that I think finally puts her up there with the big boys where she belongs. I saw her at a gig in a bookstore where she absolutely rocked the quiet little house. She is truly an amazing performer. Just her guitar, harmonica and voice sound like an entire band - nothing is missing from the sound. Still folky, but more full and cohesive. The title track brings me to tears every time with its honest strength. Buy this CD purely for the sound or for the meaning in the lyrics, you won't be sorry either way - the two meld like PB & J. And try & catch her live sometime!

5 out of 5 stars You want variety?.......2000-04-16

With her throaty sounds in "opinion #33", make-you-get-up-and-dance rhythm in "My Baby" and the wonderful proclamation borrowed from Harvey Fierstein in "grass for the lambs", you cannot miss with this latest contribution to the earth from SONiA. Oh, and if you're having a bad day, crank up "turtle flowers" complete with the opening and closing conversations between SONiA and Dylan V. It heals my soul with each listen.

    5 out of 5 stars Only SONiA.......1999-12-21

Without a doubt there is no singer/songwriter in the country and perhaps the world with the depth of SONiA. She continues to write about the world in ways which touch your soul. You will smile at "Bumblebee", dance to "Lovesick" and "My Baby", and cry with "Me,Too" and love everything before and after. I love It!

4 out of 5 stars Sonia's best effort in years.......1999-11-19

I've been a fan since the early days of disappear fear, and have missed Cindy on the last couple of CDs and tours as well. But "Me, too" showcases Sonia in what may be her best work yet. Good music, good lyrics, and fine production by Sonia and John Grant.

And this is an independent release -- support indie music!

    5 out of 5 stars True Delight.......1999-11-05

On 'Me Too' SONiA truly shines musically and lyrically. My lasting first impression was 'this is a happy album,' one that can be listened to over and over. Highly recommended

      5 out of 5 stars A different experience.......2007-06-13

If you let go of all expectations you may have for classical music and the interpretation of classical music you are in for a special treat. Mike Perlowin is a genius arranger and player of the Pedal Steel guitar and you can hear the passion he put into this outstanding one-of-a-kind recording project. It must have taken him years to record this album. Defenitely a collectors item!!! The original release is out of print, but fortunately it was reissued by Mike himself. Bravo Mike!!!

3 out of 5 stars An Acquired Taste.......2006-01-10

Although Mr. Perlowin's arrangement of Stravinsky's Firebird suite is effective, the rest of the album becomes a test of my endurance. I admire his mastery of the instrument, and it's a noble effort, but I'd recommend listening to this in small doses.

5 out of 5 stars Classical Pedal Steel Masterpiece.......2005-11-11

Mike Perlowin's landmark recording has been controversial in the steel guitar world since the day it was released. Those who consider the pedal steel a country & western instrument are outraged by the selection of classical material. But Perlowin is a great player, and this multilayered studio wizardry may well become the benchmark by which all future classical pedal steel recordings are judged.

There is not one country steel "lick" on this CD. Instead, the listener is treated to unusual arrangements of familiar pieces picked carefully from the modern classical repertoire.

The title track, "Firebird Suite", places most of the orchestral instruments as various timbres of the pedal steel. Some of the voices sound like an electronic synthesizer. The density of this pedal steel layering rivals that of a live symphony orchestra. The effect is quite striking.

In contrast, some of the pieces are arranged to highlight the simple beauty of the instrument. For example, Debussy's popular "Maid with the Flaxen Hair" is played as a strightforward pedal steel duet. It's wonderful to hear some of the world's greatest music arranged properly for this unusual instrument.

Perlowin makes careful, studied use of the pedal steel's characteristic glissando effect. He takes the view that the composers would probably have added glisses to their melodies if they had been writing for the pedal steel. I'm not sure I would agree, but since Perlowin's arrangements remain faithful to the spirit of the compositions I can forgive his enthusiasm.

I give this CD a 5 star rating. It belongs in the collection of every modern classical music fan, and every musician. It effectively breaks the pedal steel stereotype. It also refutes the traditionalist notion that music must be "live" to be listenable. I carry this CD in my car and listen to it often. I can't recommend it highly enough.

I notice that Amazons' description didn't include the track list, so here it is:

          Album Description

"One of the best up-and-coming bands in Seattle. When I put Spanish for 100 on the air, people stop what they're doing and contact me immediately asking `who is this band?'" - John Richards, KEXP

"Spanish for 100 draw from obvious nineties indie touchstones like Pavement and Built to Spill, but with a key distinction: these dudes aren't afraid to play the hero. Where Doug Martsch would record rip-roaring solos with shitty amps to recast his ace axemanship in a self-deprecating light, Spanish for 100 slice through Phil Ek's studio sheen with gleaming sabers." - SPLENDID

"Spanish for 100 could easily be the next best light indie pop-rock gem to emerge from the Seattle underground." - SMOTHER

"Chock-full of gorgeous moments of dusty rock with a country feedback all kept hip and indie and melodic...there is true radiance in the harmonized vocals...like a Centro-Matic song covered by The Shins...a great find, a sensational band, and you're going to want in on this before they blow up leaving you with nothing but back row seats at The Wiltern." - CultureBunker.com

With Metric, produced and engineered by Phil Ek (Built to Spill, Modest Mouse, The Shins), Spanish for 100 has produced a follow-up that digs even deeper into the sonic guitar revelry and truthful songwriting territory first explored in their debut album.

Based in Seattle, Spanish for 100 is currently comprised of Aaron Starkey, Chris Crumpler, Ross McGilvray and Corey Passons, working in the two-guitar/bass/drum format. The heart of the group is collaboration based off the whispers of heart-born acoustic songs. BIOGRAPHY: After weathering the underground Chicago indie circuit for a number of years, Illinois native, Aaron Starkey, packed up his guitars and moved west to the temperate environ of Seattle. Meanwhile, Washington State natives Corey Passons and Ross McGilvary, both former founding members of the gritty regional rock act, Preston Mill, wanted to stretch their creative legs beyond the tried and true form that Mill established during its long, successful tenure in the Northwest music scene. A serendipitous meeting revealed a mutual affinity for English amps, thinline telecasters, heartfelt melodies, chips, and salsa. Their desire for honest, straightforward songcraft, deeply rooted in the tradition of Neil Young, Built to Spill, and The Jayhawks, further fueled the three musicians, and Spanish for 100 was born in the spring of 2002. In the months that followed, Spanish for 100 performed countless shows and regional tours, culminating in their first full-length effort, Newborn Driving (released December 2003), produced by the notorious Phil Ek (Built to Spill, Modest Mouse, The Shins). It was the summer of 2004, and after a relentless performance schedule in support of Newborn, the band swept back into the studio, again with Phil Ek at the helm, recording the follow-up EP, Metric (released March 2005). However, the drum chair had been a revolving door. Though the band itself yielded a healthy cache of talented drummer friends volunteering their services toward the cause, schedules and prior commitment conflicts prevented the band from securing a permanent replacement for the job. Enter Andrew Squire, the New Mexico-born drummer whose previous work included the NYC band Pela who shared the stage with Rainer Maria, The Decemberists, Earlimart, and Sleater Kinney. Squire's experience with dark, ambient pop, combined with his jazz background supporting the likes of Wynton Marsalis and Randy Brecker (John Scofield, Frank Zappa, Charles Mingus), as well as his involvement with traditional folk music of Mexico and the American Southwest, enabled him to survive Spanish for 100's 342nd drummer audition.

Armed with a new drummer and a successful national radio campaign, Spanish for 100 immediately hit the road for their first self-promoted and self-booked national tour in October 2004, performing blistering sets to eager audiences from such notable clubs as Schubas in Chicago and Pianos in Manhattan's Lower East Side.

3 out of 5 stars Bizarre Genre-Mash Up Doesn't Become Any Less So Upon Listening.......2007-03-07

The word-of-mouth element most likely to perk up the ears of any indie fan with Spanish for 100's second release, the Metric EP, is that it was produced by the illustrious Phil Ek. Ek's work (Built to Spill, Modest Mouse) has been key in the movement to augment controlled grit atmospherics and, more importantly, incorporate elements of country into indie music without people fleeing with their hands over their ears. That being said, emo-doing-country band Spanish for 100 might have nearly as integrated a variety of elements as Ek's most successful clients, but the elements themselves lack much sense of adventurousness. Overlong and repetitive jams ("Jungle With Lions", "See Now") feel particularly uninspired next to their tighter melodies ("Go Away, Come Home", "Fell a Bird"), especially for the latter's utilization of Corey Passons' feathery, high vocal range. The EP has moments of great clarity, beauty and urgency, but on the whole (and especially being an EP) it doesn't satiate the promise of channeled talent implicit in Ek's reputation.

4 out of 5 stars Welcome class, this is Spanish for 100........2005-05-19

An infusion of instrumentation lays the ground for the overlying vocals as Spanish for 100 continues to reach audiences. Whether it is their similarities often noted to such bands as Modest Mouse, or just their own sense of uniqueness, this band enthuses.

And although the album is not that full in a capacity sense, having merely six songs, the band displays their aptitude to play live, or to develop in studio. Hey, sometimes it takes a little to do a lot, and I think Spanish for 100 has taken Metric and done a fair amount.
