2 out of 5 stars Should Have Never Been Released.......2007-05-25

This is no where near the caliber of Karen's previous releases. Richard, Herb Alpert and A&M were right. I bought this CD because of my memory of Karen's beautifully clear vocals. I was extremely disappointed with this effort. Totally uninspired recording.

5 out of 5 stars Should've have been released in 1980.......2007-04-08

Wow!I love this CD/album. After reading the authorized biography of The Carpenters I thought this album/CD would not be good. I was a bit blown away. Much of the music sounds modern. I did not know that Billy Joel's band played on many of the songs and they are awesome. Karen, who is known for her great voice (and has a 4 octave range), sings a bit higher on some songs and sounds fantastic. It was a great exercise and I am convinced that the album would have been a success and yielded a couple of hit singles. The exercise part is that different styles of music were tried, with succes, on this album. Several songs sound jazzy, one sounds country, a couple of songs are disco but do not sound like the disco of that era (they are subdued). I noticed that one song was written by John Farrar. Farrar wrote many of Olivia Newton-John's biggest hits and was her favorite songwriter. Olivia Newton-John was one of Karen Carpenter's best friends. Peter Cetera sings with Karen on a song he wrote. I get the impression that Karen is showing a sexy side and slightly showcasing her vocal abilities at the same time (Olivia Newton-John had successfully released an album the year before showing a more sexy side---- Totally Hot). As a whole, had this album been released I feel confident it would have brought The Carpenters up to date with the times as they had become out of fashion for a number of years and needed some new life injected into their sound. We will never know what might have happened had this been released in 1980. I am so glad it was released 13 years after her death. What surprised me most is that I liked most of the songs.... A Lot. I really recommend this to any fan of The Carpenters as it showcases a different and more grown-up sound from Karen and again she flexes her vocals which sound amazing.

3 out of 5 stars Great . . . if you keep your expectations intact.......2006-11-20

Will Phil Ramone cause Karen to rock out? A new side of Karen Carparter unwrapped? So different it's been suppressed for more than two decades?
No. Don't expect radical change from Karen Carparter's only solo album.

Before reading, please note my biases. I'm not an easy listening fan, but I don't have a single Metallica album in my collection either. The draw? Karen Carpenter's incredible voice. I always thought the Carpenters were too whimpy, but I am still listening to them. So, I was hoping for a whole different side to K.C. Would a producer like Ramone be able to use a voice very suited for easy listening in a more modern venue? Again, no.

Those who wrote this is a different side of Karen Carpenter, I believe, are mistaken, or real easy listening afficiantos. When I heard the lush orchestration and, worse yet, the lush background voices (very similiar to what Richard Carpenter did) in the first cut (Lovelines), I sighed. I was soon hoping that there would at least be no references to fairy dust (which are, I am glad to report, absent).

Expect a sexier side of Karen. While I never considered Karen to have a sexy voice (aka Kylie Minoque), she can twist a phrase in a sexy way, and she does it enough but not too much in this album. Ramone knew the right balance here. If Karen being sexy shocks you, consider this: it was the late 70s. The phrase "safe sex" wasn't invented yet and disco music, popular at the time, was suggestive. This is tame in comparison. Besides, what sick brother would promote the sexy side of his sister? Richard could not, but Ramone could and does.

Expect some schmaltz too. As usual, it's a bit much in this album. But that is not why I buy Carpenter albums. It is to hear Karen's rich voice and the way she can make a tone richer in mid-note. If that is what you are looking for, this album will not disappoint.

Highlights include an interesting remake of Paul Simon's "Still Crazy After All these Years." Think, "Ticket to Ride." It doesn't try to be like the original, but puts the singer's mark on it. "Guess I just lost my head" (as a male) makes me want to renew my gym membership. Hokey to the max, "Lovelines" is still good. The best song is the last one, which interestingly is unmixed, and includes instructions from Karen. Unplugged, she shines on a song well-suited for her voice. Thank you, Phil for adding this, and thank you Richard for releasing it, knowing that the still-many fans may blame you for supressing it for so long.

In summary, if you love Karen Carpenter's voice, buy this album. While we all wish Karen could record more music, let's be thankful that we are allowed to hear this magnificent voice one more time.

5 out of 5 stars Karen's Amazing Voice!.......2006-03-02

This solo project(which should've been released, who knows what it might have done), this record places Karen's voice in different settings from Pop\rock, disco,& country and there was a very 'happy' sound in Karen's voice, listen to 'Lovelines', 'If I Had You'. I love this lady's voice and I miss it!

5 out of 5 stars Great Singing - Wish She Had Done More Albums.......2005-12-19

If you like Karen's voice, why hesitate? The only objectionable thing you might find is that her lyrics may be a bit less innocent than on her other albums.

5 out of 5 stars A creative and moving interpretation of the original music........1999-07-27

I'm a huge fan of instrumental versions of popular music. Sometimes called "Easy Listening." I have tons of cd's and tapes of this format. I wish it was easier to come by. It's hard stuff to find these days. I own this cd, as well as, several others by Richard Clayderman. I think it's one of the best instrumental interpretations of the original collection. It should'nt be directly compared to the original because it is instrumental! However, this cd molds the original with some Clayderman flair. I'd recommend to anyone who can still find it. This stuff becomes collector's item music fast.

4 out of 5 stars The Carpenters is not the same without Keren Carpenter........1998-08-04

This remake of the Carpenters songs is still beautiful. However, despite Richard's skillful arrangement and piano playing, this album can't still measure up to the old carpenters' album. One thing that definitely is missed from this album is Karen's angelic voice. I don't think that Richard's Piano melody can substitute Keren Carpenter's singing..

      5 out of 5 stars What a Pleasant Change!.......2007-02-14

Listen, I first heard Karen's hauntingly enchanting voice back in 1970, singing "We've Only Just Begun," and I was hooked! Yet, as the years went on, just like The 5th Dimension, the Carpenters music--to me--began to sound more and more bland and less and less innovative. Now, no offense, I think Ms. Carpenter's voice is flawless; however, as praiseworthy the musicianship of her brother's is, I still believe he nonetheless impeded her growth as an original talent. Could he possibly had some kind of "control issue"? Having said that, forget about criticizing Karen's foray into performing sans Richard, and merely enjoy her musical outing.

Those lame reviewers who argue the music as being "too dated": give me a break! Your looking at it from the wrong perspective (i.e, hindsight). I'm sure if you were analyzing the material in 1981 rather than in 2007; you might find it less "dated". Just let the work stand on it's own--WITHIN THE TIME FRAME THAT IT WAS ORIGINALLY RECORDED AND INTENDED FOR COMMERCIAL RELEASE. Then, come back and tell me that Charles Dickings work is antiquated! Okay, maybe that's a bad analogy, but it's extremely refreshing to hear Karen's voice simply delivering songs as opposed to being extremely over produced via reverb and excessive orchestral arrangements.

5 out of 5 stars Karen Carpenter is outstanding!.......2005-10-05

Had this album been released in 1980 I would have bought it immediately and it would have become an all-time favorite for me. This album from beginning to end is a real treat. There are three disco influenced songs but for the most part the bulk of the album fits into the smooth jazz category.

It's obvious by the lilt in her voice Karen truly enjoyed working on this album. This is a work she was certainly very proud of.

Several of the albums cuts could have been big hits in 1980 including "If I Had You" and "Making Love In The Afternoon". Pete Cetera sings harmony vocals with Karen on "Making Love In The Afternoon". Liberty Devitto from Billy Joel's band adds his all to the drum parts and percussion solos on the discofied "Remember When Lovin' Took All Night". Rod Temperton's vocal arrangement on "If I Had You" is simply complex and utterly outstanding. Some of the vocal mix is reminiscent of what Temperton did on the vocals on Michael Jackson's "Thriller" album. Temperton was the head member of the mid-late 70's group Heatwave who had with hits "always And Forever" and "Boogie Nights". My favorite song on the album is "Guess I Just Lost My Head".

I cherish this album amongst all my Carpenters albums and remains one of my most played discs to this day.

I don't often write reviews but Ms. Bailey's "Teach Me To Love" deserves attention. Teach Me To Love takes the listener on a colorful spiritual journey...the songs present deep spiritual truths in a delightful style. When Ms. Bailey sings - the soul of the listener sings along as well. Ms. Bailey's lyrics become the listener's prayers. She is a gifted lyricist. The styles range from ballad to soft rock - really, there is something for all tastes. A review of this artist and album could not be complete without mentioning the vocal ability of Ms. Bailey (and the vocal arrangements, harmonies, etc...) - her voice is obviously her primary instrument. Her tone is pure and she exudes a humble confidence that makes the listener feel like she is singing only for them! Nice to see such talent used for the Glory of God! Highly Recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Genuine, Powerful Worship.......2001-04-19

This is a wonderful inspirational album. There are a few tracks on this that bring me into the presence of God. "Simon, Son of John" is, in my opinion, a perfect song... catchy, reverent, takes a familiar passage in Scripture and illuminates it for us. "Come into His Heart", is congregational-friendly and touching. The title track, Teach Me to Love, is filled with passion and tenderness. There's a lot to like in this album, and worthwhile for your quiet times.
