A Wonderful Gift.......2001-11-19

Helmut Lotti, the great Belgian Tenor does it again with this album of Christmas Classics. His voice is simply indescribably grand and thrilling. This man has such control, such rhythm, such command. His pleasant phrasing both musically and with the various languages he sings in bring comfort and joy, even inspiration to the listener. The holidays are better with this album on the stereo!

This is a concert given some two or three years ago. It hasn't aged one bit. Song after song is performed with such a wonderfully full and traditionally classical treatment that it is simply timeless. It will never grow old. The video of this concert is wonderful too.

As an added bonus, Helmut here has a special "guest", 12-year-old Michael Verschuere (later called Michael Junior for you PBS fans). Michael sings "Silent Night" so powerfully you will listen open-mouthed and amazed. The thrills will deepen when this amazing boy sings a duet with his mentor: the beautiful "Panis Angelicus". Wow! Such talent is rare in one singer, but to hear two singers so amazing and inspring on one album is a treat beyond description.

There may be Christmas albums as good as Helmut's "A Classical Christmas" but there are none that are better.

I purchased this CD before Christmas and have played in many times. I especially love the songs Helmut Lotti sings in German -- even sent the words to one of them to a friend living in Germany to obtain the English words. Helmut Lotti sings with a chorus, but is not drowned out by the chorus as in some other CDs by various artists. I recommend it highly.
