5 out of 5 stars 50's Hits: Great Records of the Decade.......2001-10-19

Finally! After being ripped off by sound-alike (I use the term sarcastically) artists and crummy re-recordings, I found a label I can trust! This album is released by Curb Records, and the songs are the genuine article. Apparently Mike Curb, of "Burning Bridges" fame, believes in giving the customer the real thing.

All of the songs on this cd were big hits in the 50's, and one of the few that has the original "Poor Little Fool" and "Susie Darlin". The variety of selections is also unique, ranging from Pat Boone's ballad "Love Letters in the Sand", to the somewhat unusual (compared to the other 12) "Black Denim Trousers", and the timeless "Blueberry Hill".

There are really no bad tracks in this baker's dozen. Whether you are just getting into the sounds of the 50's or just filling gaps in your collection, this album is worth it!

4 out of 5 stars Worthy Collection of Assorted Hits.......1998-06-19

Though many of the songs included are available on better collections, this CD boasts original hits by the original artists, including the elusive hit single by Ricky Nelson, "Poor Little Fool." Any CD that includes "Black Denim Trousers" by the Cheers and "Susie Darlin'" by Robin Luke is worth the price.

Album Description

We should all look so good at fifty.

Rock `n' Roll at 50: A Galaxy of Hits From Rock's First Decade is a three-disc companion to the PBS special airing nationwide beginning in December 2003. The special was produced in cooperation with WQED/Pittsburgh by the same team that created the famed Doo Wop 50 special (the #1 PBS fundraiser of all time). This new box set contains sixty chartbusting hits, from the genesis of rock in the mid-Fifties, through doo-wop, surf music, Motown, Brill Building pop and the British Invasion.

The track list is a Who's Who of rock: Elvis Presley, The Beach Boys, Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly, The Supremes, Roy Orbison and many, many more.

With the PBS special airing throughout the holiday season, Rock `n' Roll at 50 makes a perfect gift item for the last-minute shopper!

Includes a 40-page booklet--chock-full of photos and track-by-track liner notes--and attractive digibook-style packaging. Every track was a Top 40 hit, and most were Top 10!

5 out of 5 stars A First-Rate Collection from Rock 'n' Roll's Golden Era.......2005-03-04

What's not to like? This sixty-song companion to the PBS documentary is an astonishing testament to rock 'n' roll's golden era. Nearly half of the artists represented here (26 by my count) have been inducted into the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame. Beginning with Bill Haley's 1954 hit "Shake Rattle and Roll," these three CDs provide a crash course in everything from doo wop to soul to the British Invasion.

While many of these songs are frequently anthologized, there are a number of surprises. Instead of "My Boyfriend's Back," the Angels are represented by their debut hit from 1961, "'Til." Also, instead of hearing "It's My Party" for the umpteenth time, you get "You Don't Own Me." Lou Christie, who is best remembered for "Two Faces Have I" and "Lighting Strikes," is represented by "The Gypsy Cried." And Jack Scott (who I unfortunately NEVER hear on oldies radio) is represented by his million-selling 1958 hit "My True Love."

I do, however, have a couple issues with this box set. First of all is the sequencing. The songs are not chronological, so on disc-1 you get "Do Wah Diddy Diddy" (1964) following "Whole Lot of Shakin' Going On" (1957), and later on the same disc "Lady Willpower" (1968) follows "When You Dance" (1956). And how does "Lady Willpower" fit the box set title (A GALAXY OF HITS FROM ROCK'S FIRST DECADE)? If the oldest song is from 1954, shouldn't the set end with 1963--or 1964 at the latest? Moreover, 1964 is represented by 14 songs (almost a fourth of the total) and 1965 has the second-most songs with seven. [Also, 1966 has three and 1967, 1968 and 1969 each have one.] I'm not really upset with the emphasis on the mid- to late-sixties selections--as an aging Baby Boomer I think these are great songs--I'm just pointing out that there are twice times as many sixties songs (41), as there are fifties songs (19).

One final concern, with each disc averaging just over fifty minutes in length, the price is a bit steep. But when you look at the quality of music in this collection and the terrific 40-page booklet, this is an amazing collection. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely primo box set!.......2003-11-20

My kids got this for me for my birthday today, and I listened to the whole thing in one sitting. Absolutely first-rate collection of classic early rock, with some interesting obscurities thrown in for good measure. The booklet that comes with it is also a good read. It's everything good about oldies radio with none of the bad stuff--no repeats, commercials, or irritating jingles. This is the perfect gift for anyone who love oldies.

While these songs look good they are re-recordings.
So take this into consideration when contemplating a purchase.

Deck of Cards by Wink Martindale still moves me..an soldier's parallel of a deck of cards to a Bible/prayerbook/almanac...
Gonna find me A Bluebird and Oh Lonesome Me are a bonus on this inexpensive cd collection..definitely a good buy for $5.00

1 out of 5 stars the 50's Decade Country Hits TFD67122.......2002-02-27

This CD is an example of artists who have had previous gold or platinum recordings, and now have ruined their original master recording sales by putting out a product that if originally release in this capacity would have wound up in the radio stations trash basket. We are quite sorry to see artists like : Don Gibson and Mitchell Torok, who appear to have been desperate to participate in such a CD release as this one.

        5 out of 5 stars Straight-up Hillbilly Rock.......2006-07-09

Raw, unvarnished bangin' and strummin' coming out of the center of the same crossroads of rnb, country and gospel that the great Sun Records stuff sprang from. These guys were havin fun first and trying to make money second (albeit a CLOSE second). I suppose that IS strange, bein' that it's so unlike todays "country" music- you know, the kind without the "o" in it (thank you Shooter Jennings). If you dig Hillbilly roots music you're gonna be one happy puppy with this disc!

        5 out of 5 stars Mid-West "Hillbilly" Rock roots.......2006-04-19

Mar-Vel' was a small, basically one-man operation in the Mid West during the 50's and early 60's. The lovingly compiled and annotated (Cowboy Carl Records) compilation is a mixed-bag of nearly straight steel and guitar, sometimes sax country swing/boogie, with the mixing of early rockabilly rock elements on some. The wide variety of sounds and tunes, some very normal, some, like the tunes Sweet Lucy, by Shorty Ashford, and the big collector's item, Hot Lips Baby by Herbie Duncan are pretty far out, even by the early day standards of, "Say, boy, you can play and sing... let's make a record together."
Calumet City, close to Chicago, was the operation ground central of Mar-Vel' Records, run by Harry Glenn. Glenn did personal "barnstorming" promotions out of a truck with a sound system strapped on to the top, stopping at local radio stations to sell his latest recording, somtimes accompanied by the performers, who were ready to do "appearances" at the drop of a $20 bill. But the great commentary by the co-producer of this set, Cowboy Carl Schneider, must be read in full to enjoy all the stories, and the backgrounds of each of the fine performers.
Each recording has a sound and style, and all are done with care and finess, while keeping the "down-home" sound that just begins to get wild like the rock'n'roll greats that took the country sound of "Hillbilly" music with Black Blues and R&B, and made it GOLD when it broke as Rock'n'Roll.

3 out of 5 stars LOST HISTORICAL DOCUMENT FOUND.......1999-07-07

Impossible to "star", this odd collection does forsee rock from a primordial swamp. Despite the laughable "Hee-Haw" theme, one does sense better things to come. Very strange. I would recommend it to rock historians building an archive. Very strange.
