Another Fine Effort.......2001-07-09
Included in the selections is the best-known march by Charlie Duble, "Bravura", a circus staple since its composition around the end of World War I. Duble (1884-1960), a native of Indiana, spent 23 years touring with various circuses, including Barnum and Bailey, Hagenbeck-Wallace and Sells-Floto, playing the trombone and composing about 45 marches. Eight of those are included in this series, plus one "characteristic" piece, "Sounds From the Harem" (Vol. 15).
Also prominently featured are six more fine Karl King marches, the most familiar being Caravan Club, Robinson's Grand Entry, Garland Entree, and Huntress, my all-time favorite King march, which contains a simply delightful collection of melodies and counter-melodies, especially in the trio, which to me has always signified "showtime".
Other selections include two by Henry Fillmore, one of which is in the traditonal circus style, "Circus Bee", and the other which is not, "His Honor", one of the finest concert-style marches ever written. I will include more information about Fillmore in a future review. Also, there are three marches by Russell Alexander, two in his traditonal style and the other, "Interational Vaudeville", which was written in a more upbeat manner and with less emphasis on the lower brasses than any of his other marches; sort of "Alexander lite", in other words. More about him later, too.
