Farrelly brothers Bobby and Peter made imaginative use of Jonathan Richman's music in There's Something About Mary. Now another of their twisted romantic comedies, the Jim Carrey vehicle Me, Myself & Irene, arrives with a soundtrack disc literally half-full of Steely Dan covers by various modern-rockers and post-folkies. Needless to say, this mini-tribute album often fails to improve on the indelible originals, mostly because the singers fail to keep one eyebrow raised as Dan frontman Donald Fagen did so perfectly. Still, Wilco leader Jeff Tweedy's hoarseness and Ivy chanteuse Dominique Durand's sweet bite complement the sentiments of "Any Major Dude Will Tell You" and "Only a Fool Would Say That," respectively, while power-poppers Marvelous 3 have the right idea in cranking their amps for "Reelin' in the Years." --Rickey WrightCustomer Reviews:

Mediocre with only moderate draw for some.......2005-12-22
I have long found it fascinating to listen to groups try to remake hits from other groups. There are countless cases of this in rock history, and the Dan now appears to be no exception. The trick is, can the group making the cover do something original to the song that makes you want to listen to their version, rather than jumping back to the original right away. Well, with honesty, I must say some of the covers in this album aren't too bad at all. But then again, a couple aren't great either.
Some, like the Smashmouth version of "Do It Again" bring in the group's signature style (that rough background guitar of theirs to name one) to a Dan favorite. In Smashmouth's case, I was caught off guard by it at first, especially with the chanting/rap in the middle. I can't say I'd listen to it over and over, but there is a clear effort to do their own thing, and it works quite well, probably making it the best of the bunch.
The same is true with Ivy's "Only A Fool Would Say That." It has the same lyrics and melody, but to a sort of pop beat and a hollowed out radio sounding vocals sung by a woman. I rather enjoyed it, though I'm not sure they managed to hold onto the ironic tone of the original.
The Marvelous 3, turn "Reeling in the Years," into a rock song, complete with the heavy electric guitars and drum work. They don't seem to take the song too seriously, which really is fitting given the mocking tone of the lyrics in general. I rather liked their version, and more than many of the others, felt they made the song their own.
"Bad Sneakers," done by the Push Stars is traditional rock and not a bad listen, though not exactly anything flashy or original.
If the above are the good ones, there are the couple that are not worth wasting time on.
Worst of these is "Barrytown," done by Ben Folds Five. I've read some of the reviews here and seen the raving fans... but I can't seem to get past the fact that "Ben" is singing out of key. He just slides around the notes with no concern at all about where the right ones are. I'm no musician, but it sets my teeth on edge... especially since I actually like the original.
Then there's Razor Boy done by Billy Goodrum. Somehow, he managed to kill the song's spark entirely, giving it into a weak wah wah wah sound. It's utterly amazing how boring this song is in this cover.
Bodhisattva by the Brian Seltzer Orchestra sounds virtually the same as the original, with a twinge more brass and guitar soloing. Truth is, nothing matches the old Live version by the Dan. Why even try? Ho hum.
Wilco's "Any Major Dude Will Tell You" almost sounds the same as the Dan's version as well. Even the vocals are similar, complete with voice doubling.
And what about the non-Dan songs?
Frankly, I didn't enjoy them nearly as much as the others. The only ones I thought were notable were Pete Yorn's "Strange Condition" and maybe Third Eye Blind's "Deep Inside of You".
The rest were forgettable. Hootie and the Blowfish, as usual, do a song that sounds like every other song they do, and Offspring shouts incoherently in "Talimmortal." The vocals of Ellis Paul and Tom Wolfe both have a corny sort of waver to them that makes you raise an eyebrow and wonder if they were trying to goof off.
Overall, I can't say this is the greatest soundtrack. As a Dan fan, I enjoyed attempts at remaking Steely Dan music, but aside from that draw, I'd not have bothered with it. None of the stuff on here really stands out or is exceptionally memorable. Certainly there are better things out there to spend your hard earned money on. Like actual Steely Dan albums.
Not bad for a soundtrack.......2005-11-12

Perfect Release of a two-fer.......2004-11-20
The sound on this disc is spectacular. The original session tapes were used, for the best sound possible. It is glorious sound here, folks.
Pehaps the person that wrote the review below is thinking of the previous two-fer of "Judy in Love" from England, a few years back, paired with the "Judy" album. That CD sounded very flat and dry.
Get this new and improved disc, and you'll love it.
Finally "Alone" on CD!.......2003-10-01
So why is "alone" my favorite Judy album? Maybe simply because it was one of my first encounters with Judy, when I was 17 years old. I didn't realize at the time that the selection of songs is pretty unusual. It's not the repertoire she sang a lot in her live and TV shows. I love the mostly subdued pathos on this album, although she does belt it out occasionally, in her own inimitable way. The songs are about 'surviving on your own', and some times about finding your inner strength, in a bittersweet way. The album is not very cheerful, but it does make me feel good, in a sentimental way. The arrangements are very good, just right, in the 'proper' fifties style. The strings have a very warm quality, which wasn't always the case in those days. There is also a beautiful large choir singing in the background on some tracks.
Some of the songs are very unknown, which makes this album special too. Happy New Year, for instance, is a beautiful torch song, written over a very slow version of Old Lang Syne in minor key; a real gem of a song! Blue Prelude is also a great song, so don't be discouraged by the titles you may not know.
All in all, a 'must have' for any Judy fan, but also a wonderful introduction if you want to get acquainted with Judy's singing. "Judy in Love" is an excellent example of her warm joyful singing, while "Alone" gives you all those wonderful torch songs. A balanced package, with a passionate Judy in great voice!!
Terrible sound and terrible packaging.......2003-06-27
JUDY AT HER BEST with SPECTACULAR SOUND!.......2002-05-11
JUDY IN LOVE is paired with her monaural ballad album ALONE, which was arranged and conducted by Gordon Jenkins. The two albums together are a distinct contrast and yet only show the versatility and mastery of Garland. The highlight of the ALONE tracks is Jenkins' schmaltzy, yet irresistable I'VE GOT A RIGHT TO SING THE BLUES. ALONE was previously issued on CD by Capitol years ago, but has been long out of print, so this collection is a dream come true for Garland fans.
The 5 Star rating is for the recordings and the way they've been beautifully produced. It does not, however, represent a true rating for the package itself, which has been saddled with awful,
amateurish liner notes which are so poorly written that it's a blatant insult to Garland. What a shame the producers who took such care in creating such a great sounding album, didn't bring the same kind of excellence to the accompanying package. This should not detract anyone from buying this CD, but buyers looking for an interesting commentary on the legendary lady and these specific tracks will have to go elsewhere.

Amazon.com's Best of 2001
Barbara Cook is one of today's most accomplished song stylists, and if you don't believe us, just listen to this live album. It's a master class in the art of singing. It documents an evening at Carnegie Hall during which Cook proved that she can dissect and extract the substance out of the simplest of lyrics. One of the best surprises is "You Could Drive a Person Crazy" (from Company), which is taken at an amiable trot and allows the singer to display its humor. Cook is not a swinging singer and uptempo is not her pace; give her a ballad, though, and she'll wring the last drop of emotion out of it. Her version of "Losing My Mind" (here paired with "Not a Day Goes By") is simply astonishing. The singer also performs songs that Sondheim has said he wished he had written, an awful lot of them by Harold Arlen. No complaints here. Guest Malcolm Gets solos on a few songs and duets with Cook on others, including "Let's Face the Music and Dance." This is classic material done masterfully by a classic singer. --Elisabeth VincentelliCustomer Reviews:

Everyone Should Whistle.......2003-10-11
An amazing intro to the body of work of a true master.......2003-06-16
Beautiful, moving concert.......2003-04-13
I do have to say that by 2001, when this concert was recorded, Cook seemed to have a lost a little bit of power and intensity in her singing. This is only natural for someone of her age. Her voice is still lovely, but you can sense her keeping it in reserve a bit. She's as expressive as ever, but compare the rendition of "I got lost in his arms" on this album to the one on her previous album recorded in 1999, "The Champion Season", and there's less urgency and vocal depth in her singing here. That said, the high B at the end of "Ice Cream" is sensational.
So, despite that caveat, this is, again, a wonderful album, a must for Cook fans, especially for the gorgeous renditions of songs I'd never thought I'd get to hear her perform: "Not a Day Goes By", "Happiness/Loving You", "San Francisco", etc. Buy it!
... and I love Barbara Cook.......2003-02-11

Champagne Music!.......2006-07-09
It is so nice to be able to hear in these translations the witty words, sung with welcome clarity and meaning by these admirable artists. As I recall, there were no microphones in sight, and perhaps not even used, when this production of Orpheus In The Underworld was brought to Australia, with a few cast changes but the same sparkle as shown here. Crisp diction and lively, often lovely, singing - a great recipe for enjoyable listening indeed.
The recording sounds a bit shrill here and there, but what a churlish quibble; to Hades with such curmudgeonly qualifications! This is music to raise the spirits, and not just those from Hades.
