5 out of 5 stars Greatest Metal CD I've Heard.......2007-05-11

I really like Nymphetamine. It was the first CD I've ever owned of Cradle of Filth. Nymphetamine is obviously the best song on the album, but I also liked Swansong for a Raven and English Fire. Eight and nine are good tracks, too. I really like how each album that Cradle of Filth puts out tends to have some type of theme. For instance, this album tends to be more of a Salem witch trial-type theme (where woods represent evil, death is by hanging, etc.) Damnation and a Day is obviously about Lucifer's fall from Heaven and his new reign over Hell and the extent to his power. This is probably still their second-best album in my opinion. I think Damnation and a Day probably beats it.

4 out of 5 stars Gets unfairly critcized.......2007-04-06

Cradle of Filth has gotten unfairly criticized for reasons that I have yet to find true. Some say its not "black metal", or its "trendy" or because they appeared on Viva La Bam, they are sellouts. First off, black metal fans seem to compare them Mayham, Gorgoroth, Emperor, and Dark Throne. If we look at the older material of some of these bands, the sound was completly different 10yrs ago or even farther back then that. Some of the bands such as Emperor have taking a more modern approach on the Black Metal sound. Comparisions really arent fair, because we could could compare Bolt Throwers "Doom" type metal to Cyrotopsy's "Progrssive" Style metal. Same genre, two completly different sounds. COF might not follow traditional black metal style, but its still pretty solid. The band has some great lyrics, and the musical ability of the band is rock solid. I have always thought of the band with a Marilyn Manson type sound, that is speed up (such as with the heavy use of keyboards) and Danni does have an exteme vocal that is very "Black" Metal like. If we look at other "True" black metal bands such as "Emperor"(newer),"Old Man's Child" and "DB" you will find that they use a lot of the same technical aspects that COF uses. Please note when I say "true" I dont mean that these are great bands and they define "black metal" Its just that this is the classification that these bands get, unlike Cradle, which says they arent black metal, but then again, who cares, and even if the band themselves or fans tell you they arent, they still have a heavy influence by black metal bands such as "Hellhammer" and "Venon" If you can find it listen to COF cover of "Black Metal" It really kicks some a**. Regardless of what we want, or what the band wants to classify it, they are still a powerful band, and even though they might be in danger of selling out (I get this from the things that I have read, but I just dont see it happening) BUT IF IT DOES, there is always the older material, and this brillent album that has very little filler. ENJOY

4 out of 5 stars Actually really good.......2007-02-16

This is about 3.5 stars - a pretty good album. When I first heard this band, I remember thinking they were frightful. Bt that's not actually true. If you take time to look at the lyrics - Dani Filth really knows how to write a song, and he uses words I never even heard of before I listened to the song. He has a really imaginative and original way of describing things, which is awesome. The instruments are fantastic as well - the guitars in particular. And they scream rather than sing, but that's really what helps add flavour to the style of music - my friend (who loves hiphop) said that his 'singing' was rubbish - but that's part of the style of music.
And for all you people who say it's full of swearing - Green Day,American Idiot has more swearing than this, so it's actually not too bad - and they do not CONSTANTLY rant on about Satan the way some metal bands do. They do sometimes, but not constantly.
So all in all, this is a pretty good band - but not one of my favourites.

5 out of 5 stars Welcome to the Wizard, the Wonderful Wizard of Schlongs.......2007-01-15

This is an excellent CD by the band Cradle of Filth! The track Nemesis surpasses anything the band has ever put out thus far. Redrum! Redrum! cries Jack Nicholson, in a voice that reminds me of my mum yelling at me for picking my nose when I was just a wee lad. This band is excellent! They are really in touch with that "Halloween" feeling. I don't mean the band "Helloween", but the actual church-going holiday,
"Halloween". Now, I know you're probably thinking "hey, what's happening here", but do you remember the candy corns you would always get. Those things are so cheap and nasty, but they really remind me of this band. Nowadays, mums and dads buy better candy, like little small irish looking candy bars and orange colored jelly beans. Do you remember the candy with the orange and sometimes black wrappers? Gee, those were awful. They probably made those at the same factory where they make those wax bottle candies with the liquid juice in the middle. But those were actually good, I especially liked the blue ones. O.K., the next song, "Absinthe with Faust" even sounds scary by the song title. It really scares me and reminds me of the facist regime in Italy during WWII. Just the name does that. The actual song sounds once again like me mum or grandmum. Redrum! Redrum! cries Jack, I like Pez better than all the halloween candies, actually. Why didn't they make Pez for Halloween? Pez was always in it's own little world. They never jumped on the candy bandwagon, always staying true to the Pez taste. I really respect and love Pez. Cradle of Filth are not a Pez band, they are a Candy Corn type band. Wow,hey, do you remember those white cigarrette candies that have fake blow dust on them, with the red tip? Yeah, you remember now. Those were the best by far, but they didn't have much taste, kind of tasted like chalk, but good chalk, like the kind the teachers used, not the kind you buy at the store, it just wasn't as good as classroom chalk. Halloween is scary, and Cradle of Filth are very, very scary. Did you ever put the dog doo outside the front door and light it on fire? Cradle of Filth have a song for that on song #11 called "Filthy Little Secret". It's so Halloween oriented, and it is their "Filthy Little Secret". Dan Quail comes to mind when I hear this kind of music, I don't know why. I'm sorry, you're wondering, "Holy cow, what in the world is going on here", Dan Quayle. Hey, I can't spell Quayle, but I saw him once when I was working at a restaraunt in Arizona and I asked him if he would like the Mashed Potatoes or Baked Potatoe with his steak. It's really is hard to spell Potato. All in all, Cradle of Filth are a very scary goblin band, and they remind me of Bugs Bunny when the witch tried to make rabbit stew out of him. The singer really, really, and I know you'll agree, reminds me of the wicked witch of the East from Wizard of Oz, or is it the West? That always really bugged me, I just can't understand the different witches. It makes me frustrated to even talk about it, East, West, good witch, where was the good witch from, the Midwest, maybe Canada? Was the good witch really good, or was it a scam? Very Hollywood, very scary, very Cradle of Filth. We're off to see the wizard, and Dorothy would have loved Cradle of Filth. She needed that as a child, but Joan Crawford who didn't play Dorothy, was the real Cradle of Filth. Dorothy was good, Joan Crawford was the real singer from cradle of Filth. The new singer, Dani, is a poor imitator of the child abusing idiot Joan Crawford. Her kids should have stuffed some candy corns down her mouth until she choked on those nasty yellow yokes. Redrum! Redrum! Mummy dearest is coming, mummy dearest is coming, Dani sings, mummy, mummy dearest, can we trick or treat tonight? No, you will go to your room without dinner, and no candy corns! Thank god she's dead. Happy Halloween, Boris Alfredo

1 out of 5 stars Not Black Metal.......2006-12-02

I was talking with a guy I work with about metal. I mentioned black metal and he started talking about cradle of filth. I was disgusted by his lack of knowledge on the genre, seeing as how he had just told me that he listened to the most extreme bands possible(he was talking about As I Lay Dying and Norma Jean, which are little emo post-hardcore bands
hahahahahahaha). That just goes to show you how ignorant of not just black metal, but metal in general most emo and goth kids are.
Bottom Line:If you like cradle of filth you are a trendy.

Album Description

And so to 2006, where Cradle Of Filth find themselves in the enviable position of being in a league and class of their own. Having long since outstripped the achievements of their one-time contemporaries, the band is now firmly entrenched in a rich vein of form. The current line-up of Dani Filth, guitarists Paul Allender and Charles Hedger, bassist Dave Pybus and drummer Adrian Erlandsson is the most solid and powerful in the band's career and Thornography is the resounding, conclusive proof. With songs as brutish, bombastic and diverse as Libertina Grimm, Tonight In Flames, Cemetery & Sundown, I Am The Thorn, The Byronic Man (featuring HIM's Ville Valo on guest vocals) and a deranged cover of Heaven 17's '80s pop gem Temptation, the world's biggest and best extreme metal band have never sounded so exhilarating, so vital, so venomous.

A great band putting out yet another great album. This has got to be one of the best so far. Melodic, dark and heavy...what more could you want?!

4 out of 5 stars Great for the acquired taste........2007-05-11

As stated in the title, Cradle of Filth is an acquired taste. You either like them, or you don't. For those of you who don't like their music, quit bellyaching and just simply not buy their music. For those of you who like their music, stop being so quick to trash those who dislike it. Personally, I really like Cradle of Filth, and I feel like this CD is only their third best, but it is really good nonetheless. I've found that when listening to metal, death metal, black metal, whatever the case may be, that you have to poke and prod to see what groups you like. When you come across groups you don't like, you just have to move on to find another that you do like. For me, my taste lies in Cradle of Filth. For this album, I really like the songs Dirge Inferno, Tonight in Flames, and I Am The Thorn. I still think that Nymphetamine and Damnation and a Day were better albums, though.

1 out of 5 stars not their best outing.......2007-05-02

i bought this cd the day it came out back in november.i thought this cd was [...] from the begining. i still do. i decided to check the reviews for it to see how others felt about this album and i was shocked to see that people like it. whats wrong with you people! this album is one of the biggest disapointments ever. unlike most of the people reviewing, i have listened to cradle for years and am a huge fan of the real cradle from 1996 to about 2000. then they decided to sacrifice their music for money to appeal to children with their parents money. this album is the last cradle cd ill ever buy.

as far as the music goes, the production is perfect and the artwork is ok. if only the music was halfway decend. all the guitar riffs are totally metalcore. the harmonies on here are so weak, i diddnt even hear 2 guitars half the time. the drums. i don't know what adrian is thinking when he writes his drum lines. their is so much double kick that it is hard to tune into any emotion intended. if he is not doing molesting his pedals, than he is doing a common punkish style beat that is so incredibly boring it is sleep inducing.the vocals. these are the worst vocals i have ever heard from dani. it probably has to do with dani being a little fat a** now. he had to go on a diet and stop recording half way through the making of the record beceuse he wouldn't stop eating! after all these years he has lost the intensity and coldness in his vocals. now all were left with is an annoying skretch that sound like a toddler throwing a hissy fit. do to all these changes, they have appealed to a different, younger, more ignorant crowd which includes all you morons who give this album more than 3 stars. if you really want your spine to tingle, check out cruelty and the beast, vempire, principle of evil, and dusk and her embrace. that was cradle at their best. when dani had him voice, before their riffs went metalcore, and most importantly, before adrian!

4 out of 5 stars It's about getting new fans.......2007-04-25

I have read some of the other reviews and can understand why "die-hard" fans are crying sell-out. I am a new fan of Cradle of Filth and applaud them for making a CD that is more accesible. For someone that is new to the genre, I think it is a smart move. Whether fans like it or not: this is how bands stay alive. It's about marketing. I really liked it so I went out and bought another. I did not like it as much as Thornography, but the point is that it made me want to buy another. So don't bad mouth them so much. As for the Hot topic thing...well i can agree to some extent. Again it's about marketing, although (Let me duck behind a protective barrier first) Hot Topic is for posers that think they are above the mainstream when all they are really doing it shopping at a punk/gothed-out American Eagle.

NOBODY CARES ABOUT SATAN ANYMORE except for Christians. Are you guys a Christian rock band or what??? If you keep quoting the stupid bible in your songs, your gonna end up on 92.3 FM, "THE MUSIC OF THE LORD, BY CRADLE OF FILTH". Once again boys, NOBODY CARES ABOUT SATAN, OR YOUR DUMB SPELLS, OR YOUR GIRLY CLOTHES, OR YOU FANCY LOREAL MAKEUP!!!! TODAY, GUYS, I WILL TELL YOU HOW TO BECOME A REAL BAND:
1) FORGET ABOUT SATAN, ONLY TAMMY FAYE BAKER CARES ABOUT SATAN, NOBODY GIVES A FLYIN' MR. TOADS WET BALLS ABOUT SATAN ANYMORE!!! THAT WAS 15 YEARS AGO, SATAN'S DONE NOW, IF YOU HAVEN'T NOTICED. AND STOP QUOTING THE BIBLE, WE DON'T GIVE A PIG'S LEFT NUT ABOUT THE BIBLE.

2) STOP GOING TO THE MALL!!! START GETTING YOUR CLOTHES AT THRIFT STORES. NOBODY GOES TO THE MALL ANYMORE GUYS, NOBODY. MALLS ARE OUT, THRIFT STORES ARE IN.
3)CUT YOUR HAIR UNLESS IT'S REAL, AND IT"S NOT BECAUSE YOU GUYS ARE OLDER THAN THE DRIED RAT POOP IN MY ATTIC. AND DON'T GO TO THE SALON!!!! GO TO THE BARBER SHOP LIKE REAL MEN!!! SALONS ARE OUT, BARBER SHOPS ARE IN. GET RID OF THE STYX AND MICHAEL BOLTON HAIRCUTS!!!! PLEASE!!!!

4)QUIT IT WITH THE RIDICULOUS SCREAMS ALREADY!!!! SCREAMS WENT OUT OF STYLE 10 YEARS AGO, AND THEY AREN'T RETRO YET. BUT DON'T TRY TO SING EITHER, THAT WOULD BE DUMB, JUST QUIT PLAYING ALTOGETHER, THAT WOULD BE UP TO DATE.

5)QUIT STUFFING YOUR PANTS, PLEASE!!!! STUFFING YOUR PANTS WENT OUT OF STYLE 20 YEARS AGO. IF YOU HAVE A SMALL SCHLONG, SO WHAT!!! THE LAST THING WE WANT TO SEE IS THAT NASTY BULGE COMING OUT OF YOUR PANTS, YOU LOOK LIKE TOM JONES WITH EYE SHADOW AND A WIG.

6)QUIT PLAYING THOSE FANCY GUITARS, JUST GO TO A PAWN SHOP AND BUY AN OLD GUITAR FOR $100. YOU GUYS LOOK DUMB WITH THOSE UGLY GUITARS. GET A REAL GUITAR.

7)MOST OF ALL, QUIT POSING!!!! JUST TAKE A FREAKIN PICTURE WITH YOUR DIGITAL CAMERA AND QUIT POSING FOR SHOTS. POSING HAS BEEN OUT FOR 15 YEARS NOW. DON'T BE LOSERS, DON'T BE POSERS!!!!

8) STOP TRYING TO BE SCARY!!! MAYBE YOU GUYS ARE RICH, AND MAYBE YOU DRIVE NICE CARS, AND MAYBE YOU HAVE BIG HOUSES, BUT THERE IS ONE THING THAT YOU DEFINITELY ARE NOT----AND THAT IS SCARY!!!! YOU ARE NOT NOW, AND NEVER WILL BE SCARY, SO PLEASE GIVE IT UP.
G.G. ALLIN WAS VERY SCARY!!! WILLARD WAS SCARY!!!! ROSEMARY'S BABY WAS PRETTY SCARY!!!! JOAN CRAWFORD WAS VERY SCARY!!!! EVEN MICHAEL JACKSON IS KIND OF SCARY SOMETIMES!!!!! CRADLE OF FILTH IS ABOUT AS SCARY AS A BAG OF CANDY CORNS ON HALLOWEEN.

3 out of 5 stars This album is fine!.......2007-02-26

Despite the negative comments certain people have left, I believe this album to be fine. It's very atmospheric and the vocals don't sound too much different. It's a first release, so obviously it isnt as good as some of their later albums but really it isnt that bad. And in response to that comment about the keyboards sounding like carnival music: They definitely do not. Far from carnival music actually. Guess that person doesnt know his sounds very well.

For all you Cradle of Filth haters, also:
Cradle of Filth is an amazing band. Not only do they not sound like pointless noise like a lot of other black metal bands, but their lyrics and vocals and instrumentals are all amazing. Who cares if they came to sound more commercial? It's their prerogative and personally I think they came to sound a lot better.

1 out of 5 stars Another band that I USED to like...........2007-02-24

..But now that I've been introduced to some much, much more evil metal (Morbid Angel, Slayer, Hellhammer, et cetera), I could care less about this band. In fact, only one of their albums I still listen to anymore these days ("Damnation and a Day") and even that album gets on my nerves. Dani Filth (pretty accurate name) has possibly one of the worst "evil" voices I've ever heard! The guitarists prevail in churning out some pretty cool stuff once in awhile but that's about it. There's no bass (well, there might be one, I just can't hear it), the keyboards are lame, the drummer feels like he can beat on anything he wants (which does NOT make music, I'm afraid. Nice try, though), and overall, this band just flatout doesn't do it for me anymore.

I know I'm probably wasting my time and you CoF fans will probably bash me (and my good buddy Comrade Ren) with "flamez of DOOM!!" and nonhelpful votes, but not everyone will like this band, you know. Get over it! Just listen to any band that Comrade Ren below me listed. And you fanboys/fangirls try to realize that CoF isn't real black metal (Dimmu Borgir is real black metal, my friends!).

1 out of 5 stars Undoubtedly the worst black metal band ever........2007-02-23

Maybe not since Cradle of Cr@p isn't really black metal. This is about as evil and chilling as a crying baby. Harsh and irritating, yes, but evil? Nope. This is f@ggoth nu-metal, "black metal" for your typical nu-metal kids too afraid to listen to real metal. God I hate Dani's voice, and the music is awful. No bass, mediocre guitars, lame keyboards, and terrible drumming. I'd rather rip my d1ck off and throw it in Lake Michigan than listen to these guys.

For truly evil metal albums (not just black metal) listen to Bathory's "Blood Fire Death," Celtic Frost's "Morbid Tales," Nocturnus's "The Key," Morbid Angel's "Altars of Madness" (this is godly), Slayer's "Hell Awaits," and Hellhammer's "Apocalyptic Raids" for starters.

Death to Cradle of Filth.

Filth Pig arrived after an extended break that found Al Jourgensen and Paul Barker giving rural Texas life a try before retreating back to the chilled concrete of Chicago. But, despite the Lone Star roots of some of its songs and much talk of Jourgensen's budding taste for country music, Filth Pig isn't Ministry's Nashville Skyline. There may be more organic elements as guitars more to the fore at the expense of keyboards and samples, but Jourgensen and Barker's forte remains the bitter screed powered by insistent beats and pummeling riffs. Ministry may have some new tools these days (most notably standout drummer Rey Washam, formerly of Scratch Acid and Rapeman), but they're working on the same old chassis. --Steven Stolder

5 out of 5 stars Best Album Ever.......2007-07-15

This highly controversial album is either loved or hated by its listeners. It's either embraced for not being Psalm 69 II, or despised for not being Psalm 69. What seems to get lost in the shuffle between the bickering as to whether this was a drug induced misstep, or a calculated move to divide the fan base, is the fact that this is a very solid album.

This album is not easy to digest, and I have to admit, that after one listen, I wasn't very impressed. Sure, songs like "Lava" and "Dead Guy" blew me away after the initial listen, but "Reload", the title track, and "Game Show" just didn't interest me at all. After popping this CD into my computer's CD Rom just about every single afternoon for a couple of weeks, it finally clicked. I finally understood the album and understood the grooves and anger that went into each song. After about 10 listens, I began to worship songs like "Game Show" and "Reload". "Game Show" is like a slowed down version of Master of Puppets and "Crumbs" and "Filth Pig" are just songs that I can't help but scream along to, although they are pretty repetitive. My biggest complaint is that I couldn't get a louder sound out of my monitor speakers. No matter how high I cranked up the volume, it just didn't seem to satisfy me. To appreciate this album, you just have to have this stuff vibrate through you. Another wonderful thing about this album is that each song is unique and has its own personality. Granted, each one of these personalities can sneak into your home at night and stab you in the back 35 times, but its easy to differentiate each song from the next. When I listen to Slayer's Reign in Blood and Sepultura's Beneath the Remains, the songs begin to sound the same, if not very similar to each other, and it gets boring after a while.

This album should be appreciated for what it is, not what it was "expected" to be.

4 out of 5 stars atmospheric.......2007-01-10

I've used these songs in countless student films to get that doomy, steamy, and haunted effect. I'm not big on the singles that we released off this one, like "Reload." But "Dead Guy" and "Gameshow" just define Ministry for me. Slow, droning, tubes so over-driven they could cook eggs, drums that sound like breaking glass. The emotion that this ablum and "Dark Side of the Spoon" pulls from me is something I try and put into my own music. It might not be dance hall, but it's definately art.

5 out of 5 stars You need a focused and fast mind to appreciate this album.......2006-12-29

That may sound like me just back-slapping myself but its just the cold hard facts.
The people complaining about this album remind me of the scene in the film Amadeus where the king tells Mozart that his music has 'too many notes'.
Theres literally thousands and thousands of conventional albums that are 'easy listening'. I myself like them. But when I am in a certain frame of mind I 'get' this album.
Please believe me when I say this album totally rocks, it is difficult but it is very rewarding. Though I concede its not for everyone.
A total disinterest in appealing to the masses and a laser focus on their craft. To me thats art, very few musical albums attain that label, but this one does.

5 out of 5 stars The best Ministry album.......2006-04-07

This is their least popular album but easily my favorite. This really isn't an industrial album, its a rock album. But it still definitely sounds like Ministry. Their approach is still the same...repetitive grooves that give a hypnotic feel. But the difference is they combine this approach with a more organic sound via guitar, bass, and drums as opposed to samples. The drums on this album are awesome. Basically this record is just a big ugly slab of heaviness with a very dark and trippy feel. Not for everyone but I love it.

3 out of 5 stars This album always gets stolen.......2006-03-14

For a album that 'supposedly sucks', it always gets stolen from me. Why? 3 reasons I can think of
1)reload: think of an angry washing machine churnning out industrial hate.
2)lay lady lay: Ministry, make a beautiful song?, say its not so!!
3)brick windows: its so catchy, damn this song is catchy, I cant stop playing this damn catchy song!!!

Other than that, I agree with the rest of the post here that say the rest is, well, quite forgetable. It definitely is NOT the great demon rejoicing and spreading its wings on the wails of the damned like you get with 'a mind is a terrible thing to taste'.

3 out of 5 stars Well here is how I see it........2006-08-03

First off, don't let this review fool you. I've been a cof fan since 1999. I love this band, they got me into Black Metal and pretty much the first stepping stone into extreme metal. However, instead of giving a cliche they sold out htis roadrunner that blah blah blah review. I think i'll put it simply like this.

Back when I was a young kid, i had a group of friends. There weren't many of us, we didn't have huge really big birthday parties or anything. We weren't popular or anything. However, we were young (friends for 5 years, from 8-13) my best friend was named Ben. ben was liked by everybody in our group. However, one day he woke up and started acting like everybody e lse, just like the popular kids. Started betraying who he really was and who he once was. He was now accepted by the masses of kids in middle school and had many new friends. However, we hated him at this point. Cradle of Filth, are sorda like Ben.

2 out of 5 stars "Two out of six a good album does not make".......2005-11-26

I guess the fact that I'm not a COF fan [ MUSICALLY, they're pretty good] probably highly effects this review; but I would say that the fact I'm giving it two stars is fairly generous, all things considered! [ Note: this band's best song is and always will be Nymphetamine Fix w/ the angelic Liv Kristine! }. Anyway, here goes:

Track 1. From the Cradle to Enslave. One of the best songs I've ever heard this band do! it would be even better if lead screamer Daniel Davey just SHUT THE F@@K UP FOR TWO MINUTES AND LET THE MUSIC PLAY! it's got a cool groove and the keyboards ; I'm not exactly sure if it's Lector or Damain returning to fill an empty slot [ the band's line-up from what i've read was absolutely chaotic during the recording ]but they are definiely the highlight of the piece,; providing most of the groove; breaking down with a sudden orchestral sequence in the middle and ending with a lovely outro. And there's the kicking guitar melody line for the chorus. Davey's vocals? I generally do not like this guy's voice at all, but I suppose it fits the song.
Beautifully soaring backing vocals by Sarah Jezebal Deva definitely help matters termendously; the band should fire Davey and have Deva take over on vocals.

Track 2. Dark Blood and F**king Thee. Chaotic track that features
vocalist Davey at his most annoying; the music only grooves during the spiraling chorus where backing vocalist Sarah Deva and the swirling keyboards manage to momentarily save things. For the most part it's just noise.

Track 3. Death Comes Ripping. the Misfits version sucks [ as does the Misfits in general } and so does this one. Terrible.

Track 4. Sleepless. An Anathema cover; I actually have to say even Davey pulls through on this one for most part; mostly opting to imitate Peter Steele of Type O Negative's low vocals;
eventually the trademark Starcream vocals kick in as well as some not to audible death growls i could have done without. but the musical arrangement is great; wonderful keyboard and piano arrangements, as well as some good old fashioned old school metal guitar riffing that compliments things nicely. A kick ass number; too bad it's not their song.

Track 5. Funeral in Carpathia. The first few moments of this piece, with Davey once again imitating Peter Steele over melodic
intense guitar lines and underling melodramtic synths is cool but things quickly disintigrate into a groovless mess with Davey screeching like a scalded cat. this song is also very badly mixed; the drums sound like tin cans!

Track 6. Dawn of Eternity. According the album credits, this is another cover. Great errie keyboard intro that goes into an equally great power chord punching metal riff drenched in creepy synth; but then it goes into that rhythmless Slayer -esque sh*t with Davey doing his usual screams and death metal growls. too bad, so sad.

Bottom line: title track and the Anathema cover are really well put together enjoyable slices of metal; as for the rest....

3 out of 5 stars Somewhat of a spoiler..........2007-05-11

I really like Cradle of Filth, and I wanted to own each and every one of their albums. But albums like this kind of push me away from doing so because they contain various songs from many other CD's that make the innovative factor of those CD's go way down. It's a good album soundwise, but it totally gives too much away that prevents me from entirely wanting to own CD's like Cruelty and the Beast. I bought Midian, but I was disappointed when I found that the majority of songs on that CD were already on this one which I had come to own first. I wish that the group would stick with the innovative album strategy instead of compiling mixes like this one.

1 out of 5 stars LOL.......2006-07-22

This is hilarious. These guys are making simple, uneffective music while dressing up like 10 year olds on halloween, WAY TO GO. This is stupid and anybody who likes it is probably just as stupid.

2 out of 5 stars Strange .......2006-02-14

This compilation collects music from the releases produced for "Music For Nations", specifically 'Dusk... And Her Embrace', 'Cruelty and the Beast', 'From the Cradle to Enslave' and 'Midian'. Disc one is a greatest hits collection from these albums while disc two focuses on rarities. Well what can be said about this collection? Only that it doesn't work very well. While the track selection for the first disc is overall excellent, one track is quite puzzling. That being the inclusion of 'Funeral in Carpathia (Be Quick or Be Dead Version)' from the 'From the Cradle to Enslave'. Why on earth was this inferior and rushed sounding version included on this collection instead of the amazing original from 'Dusk... And Her Embrace'? Heck why was it ever recorded in the first place? The second disc fares rather poorly. Do we really need four remixes? Or the godawful techno remix 'Twisting Further Nails'? I was mostly interested in this compilation to get my hands on 'Carmilla's Masque' and their cover of Slayer's 'Hell Awaits' both from the import version of 'Dusk... And Her Embrace'. Those two tracks hardly made the purchase worthwhile. I should have known from the special edition of 'Cruelty and the Beast' that Cradle simply do not do good covers. Overall this is a disappointing compilation for completists only. For the newcomer I suggest you just pick up the albums themselves. There are simply way too many great tracks from their albums that they could not fit on this release.

5 out of 5 stars Not REAL black metal.....but very impressive!.......2005-10-19

I am a huge death/black metal fan, and i have to ay i DO love CoF. They arent "True" black metal but who the hall cares!!???? They have incredible musiciansship and songs that are just plain amazing! I love Burzum, Darkthrone, Nile, Gorgoroth....etc... this is just as good! If you are only into heavy "True" black metal thats cool...but you have to admit that CoF HAS skills...even if you dont like them.

Damnation and a Day is the first album from Cradle of Filth that matches the group's monolithic musical ambitions. And it's no disappointment as they use their new-found major label muscle to excessive effect. Accompanied by a 40-piece orchestra and 32-voice choir from Budapest, they've raised their game, coming on like Venom as produced by Danny Elfman. Over 77 thrill-packed minutes in length, Damnation & A Day combines Cradle of Filth's trademark pulverizing riffs, shrieking raps, and monstrous chants with grandiose harmony vocals and portentous voiceovers. Like Black Sabbath, they regularly break their fierce assault with short instrumental interludes ("The Mordant Liquor of Tears"), then rev up again with ever more manic intensity. It seems their intention is to deliver a black-metal alternative to Carmina Burana, and it's to their credit that they come close, producing a series of scorching epics that would fit perfectly as the soundtrack to the extraordinary battle sequences in Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy. --Dominic Wills

Album Description

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The end of Brutality.......2007-06-29

If your into Dark and Menacing Metal with an Extreme side than this will be to your liking. The album begins with an Intro of storms and orchestral epicness(I know its not a word, but it fits). After the Intro you are taken on a ride of fast paced Gothed out Black Metal full of pummeling double bass work and ear slaying guitar riffing. Dani Filth(vocalist) has always used a controversial style of vocals, Ranging from girlish shrieks to low audible baritone and everything in between. The tempo for the most part is fast paced though not mind boggling fast to where the music isn't audible for our more timid metal fans but fast enough to keep you head banging.

Truth be told I believe this is Cradle of Filth's last Extreme album. Compared to everything released after this it is obvious Filth 'n' Co is quickly dissolving away there questionable Black Metal roots in order to gain a larger audience. If your looking for Gothic Metal look else where though theres an obvious Dark aura to Damnation and a Day it's fair from the melodic stylings of the Goth sub genres. If your looking for Dark moody Extreme Metal than this album should be right up your ally.

My Favorite Tracks:

-An Enemy Led The Tempest
-Better To Reign In Hell
-Serpent Tounge
-Babalon A.D.
-Mannequin
-Thank God For The Suffering

5 out of 5 stars Cradle of Filth's best album........2007-05-11

I personally believe this is the best album that Cradle of Filth has produced (at least out of the ones I have owned and heard). I love the storyline that progresses throughout all of the tracks. My favorite song is probably Mannequin, however, I also really like Better to Reign in Hell and Promise of Fever. I think that anybody looking to hear some really good tracks by Cradle of Filth before buying an album should listen to samples of those on this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Cradle of spunk, spooge, sour cream, mayonaise, facials..........2007-02-04

I hope you didn't get turned off by the "special" title of this review. I love the band "Cradle of Filth". When I was like 4 years old, I used to listen to Cradle of Filth in my mama's crib. She used to sing lullabys at night to me just like Dani sings on his new album. Or was that her yelling at me for taking a poop on the couch??? I can't remember actually. You know what, I do remember spooging on the bedsheets though, and my grandmum yelled at me just like Dani. Wow, thats why I like Cradle of Sewage so much. Cradle of Subpumps.
You know what, golly, this band reminds me of REO SPEEDWAGON. The singer from REO Spunkwagon, what's his name, Conan Crooner or something, no, its Kevin Scrotumn, anyway, he really sounds like the lead singer from this band. Golly gee, I love scary music. "Cradle of Filth", what a downright scary, terrifying name. Because the word Cradle conjures up that nice "rock me to sleep" feeling of an innocent little baby. BUT ALL THE SUDDEN, the evil words "OF FILTH" combine with CRADLE for an all out exorcism of death. WOW!!! I'm scared, mummy!!! I weel weel scared!!!!
Wow, i like this band. They are good. Someone said that they scream a lot because they have really tiny penises and small little micro balls. Don't worry guys, it's o.k. to have a little itty bitty schlong, you don't have to scream about it all day like idiots. I especially like the lyrics to the 3rd song on this disc, it's hard to hear the lyrics because he's screaming so much, but I found them to be very meaningful upon repeated listens, he sings " GET OUT!!! GET OUT!!! YOU'VE RUINED EVERYTHING!!! I WAS TRYING TO FLUFF IT UP AND DIDN"T HAVE ENOUGH TIME AND NOW EVERYONE CAN SEE MY LITTLE TINY NOTHING OF A SCHLONG!!!! PLEASE!!!! PLEASE!!! LEAVE ME ALONE YOU EVIL DOERS OR I WILL PUT A SPELL ON YOU!!!!!"

Sorry Mr. Filth, the spells on you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

1 out of 5 stars Low on Gas.......2006-07-16

While I love Cradle (Namely Vempire/Dusk/Cruelty) and many songs from other albums of theirs, this one just doesn't retain the edge. The album concept and art are interesting and essentially good, production is great, but the music is very flattened. The riffs are rather generic and indolent, the only exceptions being "Hurt and Virtue" and "Mannequin". Also, someone needs to shoot Adrian Erlandsson in the leg. It seems that as soon as the incessant droning of the double-bass ceases for a moment, it immediately starts up again.
This record may be more accessible than others, but it runs out of gas quickly after you first listen to it.

5 out of 5 stars another killer recording.......2006-06-10

this time around the band seems to borrow concepts from Nile for a unique atmosphere unlike their previous releases.
these are the best tracks:
2. The Promise Of Fever
5. Damned In Any Language (A Plague On Words)
6. Better To Reign In Hell
8. Carrion
10. Presents From The Poison Hearted
12. Babalon A.D. (So Glad For The Madness)
13. A Scarlet Witch Lit The Season
14. Mannequin
15. Thank God For The Suffering
A worthy addition to Cruelty and V-empire.

4 out of 5 stars A Great Re-Release Combo Indeed.......2007-05-29

Cradle of Filth were well known enough back in 2001 that they finally decided to put out a DVD (Heavy Left-Handed and Candid) with a live set, music videos and the like as well as a CD (Live Bait For The Dead) of the same show with a disc of remixes and other rarities (though they aren't exactly rare any longer). But they were both released seperately at a somewhat large price.

This re-release package, however, released 6 years later, contains the first disc of Live Bait and the live show portion of Heavy Left-Handed and is a GREAT bargain for roughly the $15 you pay for this. You may even pop the first disc of Eleven Burial Masses into your computer and play it on iTunes, where it will tell you it is disc one of Live Bait.

Either way, it was still a decent show. Personally, I thought Peace Through Superior Firepower was better in a lot of aspects, except that in this case, I think the set for this show was much better. The only three songs that are on it are "The Forest Whispers My Name," "From the Cradle to Enslave" and "Her Ghost in the Fog." The main flaw with this show is the amount of feedback you hear coming from Dani's wails, something that isn't in Peace. Also, the guitars sound off. At first, when Dusk And Her Embrace starts going, you may very well think you're hearing Cthulhu Dawn all over again because the guitars sound very alike.

Also, though to most Cradle fans this won't matter, it probably should be known for parents that this album does contain its fair share of language without an explicit label.

Here's my personal break down of the album, track by track:

1. Intro: The Ceremony Begins - Starting the show to shouts of "Cradle!" the opening to the show is, somewhat surprisingly, the theme for the original Omen movies. It's a very good track to listen to, actually, especially if you're a fan of those movies and it fits their music very well. (5/5)

2. Lord Abortion - I really liked the album version, but I found myself having some trouble listening to this one. It doesn't sound the same in a lot of aspects, but it's still a decent listen. (3/5)

3. Ebony Dressed For Sunset - They did a nice job here with this short opener from their V Empire EP. One of my personal favorites from this show. (4.5/5)

4. The Forest Whispers My Name - This song sounds also pretty good. Dani's huffing early in the song before starting his part fits well with the music. However, Sara's interlude to the song was better on Peace, in my opinion, where she says it slowly along with Dani and it just makes it sound better overall, in my opinion. (4/5)

5. Cthulhu Dawn - Perhaps the most brutal track on Midian, this track doesn't seem to let up at all during this performance. My only gripe are that I feel Dani's vocals don't sound the best in this song and that the keyboards, a strong part of the album version, are drowned out until the part of the song without guitars. (3.5/5)

6. Dusk And Her Embrace - The first live staple that was oddly missing from Peace's set, Dusk could've been so much more. Cradle recently put up (then took off) a live video of them performing this song in Montreal and I think it was much better done there. It sounds similar, but it doesn't to the point where I don't really even like listening to it here anymore. (2.5/5)

7. The Principle of Evil Made Flesh - Easily the best track on this set. Everything sounds more clean and clear on this song and sounds a lot like the Bitter Suites version AND the original version from the album of the same name as this track. I also like how Dani riles up the crowd before starting again at the end. (5/5)

8. Cruelty Brought Thee Orchids - Starting the song by calling it "Cruelty Brought Thee...some decent jokes" is the second live staple that seemed to disappear from Peace's set. By this point, Dani really seems to be losing energy, which is unfortunate because of how good of a song this is. It's still decent on this performance, though, just not perfect by any reach. (4/5)

9. Her Ghost in the Fog - Probably the most epic track off Midian and what became a live staple as a result, Dani begins this one by getting the crowd really going. It's a very good performance, though at the same time the one on Peace is better, in my humble opinion. This may be due in part to the fact that Dani really seems to be losing his energy is becoming really apparent here, with him not even finishing lines entirely in an attempt to catch his breath. (4/5)

10. Summer Dying Fast - I never really liked this song a whole ton until I heard and watched it on here, which is saying something, especially with how I thought this show could've been a lot better. This is clearly the last song on the main set judging by the visceral and somewhat graphic stage show ending.

11. Interlude: Creatures That Kissed In Cold Mirrors - Creatures followed soon after by the Satanic Mantra (which I personally never got HOW it's exactly Satanic in the first place) are played over the PA and the band comes out for an encore. It sounds good, but then you've got to realize that it was clearly the album versions played overhead. The opening, at least, I think was re-recorded because of how it sounds. Rate this one how you like.

12. From the Cradle to Enslave - The echo effects of Dani's vocals on this track I'm not a fan of, but the rest of the song sounds pretty good overall, I think. A staple that is played at EVERY Cradle show (to the point, even, that the band is getting sick and tired of playing it). (4/5)

13. Queen of Winter, Throned - This is my personal favorite Cradle song, second only to Funeral in Carpathia. They cut out the opening of the song but still did an overall good job of the song except for the amount of feedback from Dani's mic. (4/5)

Final Word: Even if you're just a casual Cradle fan, this album is an absolute must, simply because of the tracks that are on here and the price. Don't even bother with Live Bait or Heavy Left-Handed. The bonus tracks on Live Bait are only somewhat good (I only liked one remix (the song didn't really change that much), a soundcheck recording and the Twisted Sister cover on it) and the music videos and the like off the DVD can be found on YouTube (though many are flagged, so you cannot watch them unless you are 18+). All in all though, it was a decent show and a great re-release.

**** 3.5/5 Stars for the show & 4/5 Stars for the package and price ****
