NOT REALLY WORTH A HALO NUMBER..............................2006-11-30
A Somewhat Bland Release........2006-10-12
Sounds Like: Something I already bought.
The Good:
- It's fairly inexpensive.
- Three remixes are exclusive to this release.
- Those three are worth listening to.
The Bad:
- The two remixes for "The Hand That Feeds" are recycled from previous releases.
- Overall, there isn't much material.
Hits: The "Sam Fog Vs. Carlos D" remix of the title track and the Richard X remix of "Only."
Misses: "The Hand That Feeds" remixes -- while good in their own right -- are kinda pointless additions to this release.
Personally: I like the new remixes, but when you think about it, half of this EP has already been released. I'm a moderate NIN collector, and I already own that stuff. What does that say to the hardcore enthusiast? If you aren't the biggest NIN fan on Earth, it's worth picking up. But don't expect something as good as "Things Falling Apart" or "Still."
Best Listened To When: You wanna dance to some 'nails.
Surprisingly good remix EP........2006-10-05
The title track is one of the great tracks on "With Teeth". While not the straightforward, anthemic "The Hand That Feeds" or the electro-funk "Only", it stands out in its own way. It's sort of a slow-burner, but with a nice melody. The DFA remix of "The Hand That Feeds" is worth the price of this thing. It is quite the contrast of the original, this one being much more of an electro track. If you like DFA stuff like LCD Soundsystem, I think you'll enjoy the remix. Sure, it's kind of lengthy, but that ain't such a bad thing. The other remix is sort of just an extended mix of the original, although focusing more on instrumental parts of the song.
The El-P remix of "Only" is also another great one here. It gives the song an awesome trip-hop feel, which I think fits better for the spoken word first verse than the actual song itself. It's a lot of fun to listen to. The other remix of the song is okay. And then there's the awesome "Sam Fog vs. Carlos D." remix of "Every Day...", which is quite an enjoyable track. The remix is kind of interesting, although I have never thought of the song as anything I'd dance to or would.
It isn't the greatest NIN single/album, but the best we could expect. It makes me optimistic about the future of NIN since I wasn't actually as consistently impressed with a lot of the recent stuff, in spite my love for the first four albums (esp. "The Fragile") and the live performance I saw last year. I recommend it if you are a NIN fan. Not quite as good as the "Downward Spiral" singles, but it's just about as good.

The greatest songs ever?.......2007-07-26
Please buy it.
A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10
The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).
This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.
I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.
a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15
Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

An old music-press adage claims that second albums are notoriously "difficult." If this were true, then Every Day should be one big disappointment. The fact that it's arguably one of 2002's finest jazz albums (yes, jazz--as in real, old-fashioned, clarinets-and-trumpets jazz) proves how talented Jason Swinscoe's Cinematic Orchestra are. Following up their impeccable debut, Motion, was going to be tough, but they've surpassed themselves here. While the former was a fusion of sample-culture smoky, backroom jazz, Every Day is jazz pure and simple--old jazz for the nu-jazz generation. "Man with the Movie Camera," "Burnout," and "Flite" are near-perfect soundtrack jazz pieces: epic, shuffling, ever shifting. "All That You Give" and "Evolution" highlight the enchanting vocals of legendary soul singer Fontella Bass. Best of all, though, is the Roots Manuva collaboration "All Things to All Men"--proof that jazz and rap aren't as strange bedfellows as some may think. It's spellbinding stuff and sure to be one of 2002's finer albums. --Matt AnnissAlbum Description
Third record on the Ninja Tune label featuring the vocals from the legendary Fontella Bass and a spoken word performance from Roots Manuva. Across 7 sweeping, dramatic tracks, the group takes you through classic soul, jazz, choral pieces, minimalism and more.Customer Reviews:
"EVERY DAY"...I LISTEN TO CINEMATIC ORCHESTRA!!!.......2005-09-16
About 35 years too late........2005-08-21
"Every Day" is a sad and curious record, and one that will be painfully obvious to to anyone with a even a cursory knowledge of jazz music. "Mastermind" J. Swinscoe doesn't play any instruments here, so all that we're left to go on is his compositional talent. This consists of building ten-minute opuses around Jam-Band-101 bass vamps, milking credibility out of guest vocalists Fontella Bass and Roots Manuva, repeating the same two tired chords over and over, and considering the occasional odd time signature his idea of throwing the listener a "curveball." In short, nothing that hasn't been done before and with more taste and skill. Critics and reviewers love to point out that there are "real clarinets and horns" on the record, like it's some sort of musical revolution.
"If Coltrane was alive, young and contemporary... He would be doing stuff like this." Absolutely blasphemous. Are you out of your mind? Coltrane was about pushing the envelope, finding spiritual peace through music; his last records are some of the purest forms of artistic expression and integrity. J. Swinscoe is nothing short of a hack who would like you to believe that there is something inherently unique in having "live" jazz musicians play his music, like a modern-day Gil Evans. Funny, I thought this had been going on for over a century now.
Here are three records that Swinscoe doesn't want you to know about, because they're just a few examples of real musicians he shamelessly pulls from. Note the original release dates:
Alice Coltrane: "Ptah, The El Daud" (1970)
Herbie Hancock: "Sextant" (1973)
Pharoah Sanders: "Thembi" (1971)
Do yourself a favor and buy these exciting and unique records instead.
I give this record two stars for the musicians (who admirably made it through these sessions without falling asleep) and notably, Luke Flowers' drumming, that's it. What's perplexing is that Amon Tobin, one of the most incredible and brilliant electronic artists today, shares a place on Ninja Tune with this guy.

Where have they been for all of my life?.......2005-04-27
I was standing in a record store killing time before my bus came to take me home, and the "Man with the Movie Camera" track was playing. I was frozen in the aisle; I must have looked like a fool, but I could have cared less. I was engrossed in the music. After it was over I immediately found the only remaining copy in the store (after asking the clerk as to who they were), and I ended up missing my bus.
It was a fantastic introduction to a group that plays such an interesting style, and can pull you through a range of emotions. I now have all the albums they have produced, and I am looking to more artists on the Ninja Tunes label.
It is hard to find news on this group, but I cannot wait for their next release.
I would not call what they play "jazz", as I am loathe to pigeon-hole music into genres. It seems to me that after "pop", "hip-hop", "country", and any other Top-40 genre, jazz is what is left over. This does not give credit to the artists that can create such cool and innovative music.
Recommendation: Buy this album, pour a drink, turn it up and relax.

Album Description
When we released Bright Eyes - 'letting off the Happiness' in 1998, we knew it was the best album we would hear all year, we just didn't expect everyone else to agree with us. The response to that album has been incredible, and Conor Oberst has now proven himself to 'the rest of them' as the next singer-songwriter of true importance to emerge from the American indie music scene. This 5-song EP continues to showcase his talent at combining well-crafted lyrics with haunting music and melodies to produce songs that are manic, depressing, honest, and inspiring. An objective Bright eyes review.......2005-10-23
Someone compared a CD of their's to A Death Cab CD. Me being a pretty big Death Cab fan, I decided to go out and buy this EP to see if I liked this band at all. This review is the result of that listen.
The EP opens up with the slow acoustic guitar picks of "a line allows prgress"... A few seconds into the song I am greeted with with drums and an organ. This song sounds like a slower Cursive song. The guy's voice sounds decent. I guess the vocal effects he uses are for emotional purposes. Overall this is a pretty decent song. It reminds me of hotel california.
Next in line comes one of my favorite tracks on here: "a perfect sonnet". I don't know if it's the simple guitar stum or the sense that his voice is going to explode any moment. Seriously, the whole song I was thinking that everything was about to fall apart...but it didn't. He keeps going and going. It must be his voice that creates this mood. This was also the point of the CD where I realized that it was a bit more than music I was listening to. Bright eyes will make you feel moods that other music can't. It's got a unique brand of emotion that is new to me. It's too bad this song ends so quickly.
As I press on to: "on my way to work" I begin to get the feel for the CD. He's almost whispering on this track. There's an odd sounding guitar picking and a country sounding synthesizer. Quite frankly, I hate this song. It sounds like an offkey country ballad... Who wants that?
The next two tracks are more or less the same feel. A new arrangement provides better quality music than the craptastic on my way to work, but doesn't reach the level of A perfect sonnet.
Finally, the EP is ended with the techno atmospheric: Neely o hara... I don't know what to say. It's meaningless. I don't see how you can like this. It's just pointless.
Overall this is a half and half EP. The first two tracks are good... But the rest of the CD falls between failing and decent. If Bright Eyes good churn out more tracks like a perfect sonnet, this band would get at least a 4 star. Sadly thats not the case. So I don't recommend this for anyone other than the really dedicated fans. Perhaps the other CD's are better.
i'd tell you how touching this album is;but such a word doesnt exist........2005-09-17
Every day&Every night starts with "a line allows progress,a circle does not",a song that also holds the album title inside its gracefull lyrics;"this feeling always used to pass, but now it's every day and every night."it is a song about someone who forgot the purpose of her life, someone totally lost and alone, have nothing to do but get drunk and looking for an exit desperately. As they always does;conors lyrics tell the story in a natural, mournful way with lyrics that will haunt you whenever you hear them in your ordinary life. The song will pass you by with its haunting guitar melodies and will probably leave you questioning your own life, possibly with tears in your eyes..
Then,as you think if connor can ever do anything more touching then this one,"a perfect sonnet" will begin. And believe me no words i say is enough to tell you how touching, moving, rocking, devastating this song is!!As the song gets slower and faster over and over,it will make you think about each line connor tells, each section;which is another dagger to your heart, and you may cry over and over screaming this song in nights thinking of everything you did wrong and everything you've lost for all your life.
Ýt's a classic bright eyes song,what can i say?!!!
"Then comes on my way to work" a song questioning about the passing life and death,in a way that you dont really wanna like thinking about. The song is not that great as overall, but it is still bright eyes, and it has the quality to turn you upside down in the moment you least expect,by some line you've missed out before,or some piece of melody that you havent noticed...
A new arrangement;it resembles to arienette, one of the greatest bright eyes song ever;it's not as good as arienette but it is like a passage,a preparation to it.The most of this ep resembles fevers&mirrors,so if it has been released just before it,it'd make total sense.
The last song,i didnt got into it yet, never even listened it with all my ears but i'm sure sime time from now i'll really see what that song is about and it'll effect me just like all the others did in time.
A final, important note..Yes ; bright eyes songs are not songs to listen and just, like. You need to be ready for the songs and for the things he'll say to you, otherwise they will probably not make sense.
i see that some people are giving low stars to bright eyes telling that BE is not a great musician or a lyricist as we all say,and they blame him for pretending to be sad.and i just want to say that i know, that these people are just not ready,or not strong enough for him,and sadly some of them will never be.
but if you are one of those deep people, still confused about the way life works and ends,or figuring out how love matters to give a meaning to it all,buy this EP..you'll not regret i promise
misunderstood, i think.......2004-11-26
anyway, anything by bright eyes is definately worth purchasing, and i hope people who maybe thought otherwise at first, can understand his music a little better after reading this :)
Such sweet sorrow.......2004-10-23
5 amazing songs=5 stars.......2004-05-27

Solo album from the former Canned Heat guitarist is full of what Walter Trout does best--grungy, gritty guitar riffage set to killer grooves. That pretty much describes the best stuff here, including the opening title track, the rolling "Let Me Know," the funky "Say What You Mean," and the closer "Prisoner of a Dream," which adds horns and organ to the mix. Trout's also played with British blues elder John Mayall, and it shows in his solo work--he's got that blues-rock mix that is so typical of British blues, and so appealing when done well, as it is here. He's not quite as good at ballads; "Sweet Butterfly" wanders, and "Fool for Love" doesn't have as strong a base as the more uptempo material. On the other hand, "Through the Eyes of Love" shows that Trout can play guitar clean as well as gritty, and "Nothin' but the Blues" is solid from beginning to end. A strong entry overall, and perfect summer listening. --Genevieve WilliamsCustomer Reviews:

His second Best studio album!.......2001-12-18
although I think "Live Trout" shows more of how capable a guitar player he is, this is definitely a great album! I think "go the distance" is just a little bit better than this one but dont get me wrong this is a must have as well!
the title track has the coolest and most fluid intro, but the whole album rocks!
if you like the trout's whole rock/blues thing, check out Howard "Guitar" Luedtke and BLUE MAX He has kind of the same grungy rock blues thing going on, and just as much energy!
His best album (hard to believe he could get any better).......2001-01-05
If you buy this album, you will realize that I'm not over-stating his skill. There's a reason why he's quickly gaining in popularity in the States, and is a show-stopper at blues festivals. He and his band play long sets and with great intensity. God help the band that has to follow him.
There's one sure way to decide ahead of time if you'll like this album. Do you like a harder type of blues-rock? If yes, ANY Walter Trout CD will be a great purchase. If not, his stuff may be a little too much to digest. Not for the easy-listening or Britney Spears crowd.
I saw him play live in Cleveland recently, and it's even better that the studio recordings. Trust me, you have never seen someone work an electric guitar the way he does. It's a lot like watching Arnold, in the movie Predator, mowing down half the forest with an M-60.
I practice all the time, but I'll be 150 years old before I can do the same things with my Strat.

Rather than riding the headwinds of continued interest in vintage disco--this is the lady who sang "I'm Coming Out," after all--Diana Ross's 1999 entry is a set of soggy adult-contemporary ballads and would-be "inspirational" numbers. If she's ever to score a radio comeback à la Cher, however, it'll be with one of the remixes tacked on at the CD's end. --Rickey WrightCustomer Reviews:

Not her most popular, but I personally love it @}->---.......2006-04-16
This cd wasn't her biggest success, but it's a gorgeous cd and I still listen to it even now. A lot of the music here, was on the Double Platnum 'soundtrack'. The two best songs is He Lives In You and Love Is All That Matters. She is a queen of ballads and there are plenty here. If you are a fan of hers and do not own this, you must do yourself a favour and buy it. It's a great cd.
Diana's Best Work Since Leaving The Supremes.......2005-05-30
"The Divorce Album".......2005-05-26
Every Day Is A New Day was released shortly after that London Heathrow Airport incident where Ross was arrested and detained for hours on end after allegedly assaulting a female security officer (she protested at the fact that her breasts had to be touched during a body search). Ross became the scourge of the media, criticising her for the incident amd this may have perharps overshadowed the release of this album as i had expected this to be a big comeback for Ross. This was one of her most carefully conceived recording projects in some years and saw the soul diva colloborating with a multiple number of producers including Arif Mardin, Chuckii Booker, Steve Skinner and Malik Pendelton, who were all established and respected producers in the R&B genre.
Every Day Is A New day had the soul diva carefully and succesfully updating her over-all style and sound. Some of the tracks capture some of her most gutsy, soulful performances in quite some time as she recorded only sporadically during the 1990's.
The album opens with Ross' triumphant and soaring renedition of He Lives In You (originally recorded by another great diva Tina Turner for Walt Disney's animated classic, The Lion King). Ross is backed by an effective South African orchestra and rousing gospel vocals on the tracks chrous. Ross delivers a razor-sharp performance that's brimming with emotion. He Lives In You perfectly complimented her legendary, goddess-like status and some even went so far to say that this was her most magnificent and exciting recordings in years.
The sparkling, vibrant ballad Love Is All That Matters, written by Diane Warren, was originally a duet with R&B sensation Brandy in Ross' television movie Double Platinum (1999). Ross' solo version is still effective and irrisistiable even though being familiar and quite typical of Ross' ballad stylings.
More unusual was Ross' blatantly personal, heartaching ballad, Until We Meet Again. It's undoubted that Ross was thinking of Arner Naess as she sings this song in anunusually deeper, huskier style. These emotions are evidently stirred up inside her as you hear her yearning, almost anguish-filled voice.
The album then abruptly swerves direction and drives into urban R&B terriotry on the cool, groovy Got To Be Free. Despite all of Ross' enduring glamour and elegance on stage she still (thankfully) retains some of that streetwise edge in her singing on tracks such as Got To Be Free. She enhances her delicate, melting voice to great effect on the verses whilst the chrous is contagious. This, complete with divine musical arranegements, would have made an ideal choice for release as a single but it remainded hidden away on this album.
The original, jazzy version of her club hit Not Over You Yet is deep and mellow with swirling, electronic, R&B flavoured sound effects on the tracks dreamy chrous. Ross is in superb voice, delivering another husky and compelling performance which was a complete contrast to the more famous dance she took into the British Top 10 charts. The gorgeous So They say continues the sweet, mellow mood and Ross' exuberant delivery is exhilirating.
The haunting, atmospheric title track serves as one of the projects ultimate highlights. The startling, compelling mixture of Soul-Acid Jazz-R&B is ignited by a moody, interesting vocal performance from Ross. Without trying to analyse this too much, it is not too perceptive to detect the blatant mixed up emotions on this track where her soft, delicate voice shifts between seemingly points of utter despair to complete self re-assurance. This was the beginning of what seemed to be Ross'troubled period between the time of her arrest at Heathrow Airport until the (at one time unthinkable) drunk-driving incident that led to Ross having a short spell in prison (well a total of just two days actually but for a world wide, phenomenal superstar like Diana Ross it still proved shocking). Every Day Is A New Day showed how Ross could comfortably hit the times impeccably well with, as usually the case with Ross, ease, style and finesse.
Another reflective track was the catchy Sugar Free, a commercial-flavoured R&B number that is very uplifting in its content whilst the stand-out ballad of the album has to be the fabulous, Someone That You Loved Before. Ross delivers anotyher stunning, heart-aching performance with her soft, evocative voice shimmering with drama and emotion. This was also featured in her movie, Double Platinum and was released as an American single though all too typically the Americans just weren't interested in any new Diana Ross record with interest in her solely generated on re-packagings of her greatest hits.
Hope Is An Open Window was a blatant attempt at updating the whole Reach Out And Touch (Somebody's Hand) ethos though it fails to live up to the anthemic qualities of that track. Ross' stellar performance is impressive to say the least but her singing is literally drowned out at points by the raging gospel backing choir on the tracks chrous.
Carry On captures a red blooded, ferocious performance from the great soul diva. The fire and passion in her voice burns bright as she belts out this number with all her heart and soul, getting down and sounding like a true club mama! Ross showed she hadn't lost her touch on this jamming, rip-roaring number where her sharp, distinct vocals surfboard along those pumping, heavy bass-line, pulsating rhythms. A great dance record that is a would be classic. Undoubtedly should have been lifetd as a single.
The album then bows out (this review refers to the English release of this album so some of the remixes vary on the American version) out on another pumping dance tune, Not Over You Yet that became a big club hit in late 1999 as well as crossing over on to the main U.K Top 10 charts. i had just turend 20 when this came out and remembered really loving dancing to it in the clubs - infact it still stands very well now. It certainly showed that Ross hadn't lost that fire, sassiness and streetwise edge. Fntastic!
After the U.K Top 10 success of Not Over You Yet it looked as though Every Day Is A New Day was set to be a smash hit but alas, and rather bizarrley, the album peaked at No.71, spending just one week on the chart listings whilst not even embracing the U.S Top 100. Even so Every Day Is A New Day is overly a really great album from the soul diva and fans undoubtedly will be delighted!

Diana's Storybook of Love Gained & Love Lost.......2005-05-02
Before listening to this album I recommend (if possible) that you watch the Diana & Brandy movie, "Double Platinum", as it'll put the songs into context. The album opens with the souring, majestic sound of South African drums and rhythms of "He Lives in You", which is an uplifting track. Diana's vocal delivery is alive, clear and confident.
Although this album isn't as immediate as "Take Me Higher", it's interesting none the less for the following reason: like "The Boss" and the "Diana" albums, the tracks here mirrored the events of Diana's personal life very strongly. Little did we know at the time that Diana's marriage to Arne Naess was on the verge of collapsing, and that she would embark on one of the darkest journeys of her life.
There's a melancholic feel to the album and this is apparent in the ballads. The first ballad, a Diana Warren composition, is "Love Is All That Matters", which is a beautiful track. It should have been released as a single.
"Until We Meet Again" is the second ballad on the album and it opens with a lovely guitar intro. The lyrics are particularly poignant:
"Who would have ever thought the day would ever come
When we would see a love like this fall into pieces"
There's a touch of sadness is Diana's voice that's quite moving.
The middle tracks have a laid-back R&B groove, and most of them were produced by 'Zavy Kid' Malik Pendleton. "Got To Be Free" is a cool cut - Diana sounds great. However, the outstanding R&B cut has to be "Not Over You Yet", which is one of the sweetest uptempo cuts that Diana has recorded. It has her singing in a lower key than normal. It's very different to the Metro version that was a UK Top Ten smash hit.
"So They Say" and "Every Day Is A New Day" are mid-tempo R&B grooves, the latter being the funkier of the two.
"Sugarfree", produced by Chuckii Booker, is the second most outstanding R&B cut. It's a sort of cat and mouse love tease that Diana pulls off with ease.
"Someone That You Love Before" (written by Diane Warren and Eric Carmen) has a bitter-sweet touch to it. You get the impression that this was her heartfelt message to Arne (who sadly fell to his death in a climbing accident in 2004).
"Hope Is An Open Window", co-written by Diana herself, is my least favourite song on the album. Sure, I love the spoken intro and the gospel backing vocals, but it's one of those schmaltzy "if we hold on to each other, everything will be ok" messages that Diana seems susceptible to singing. There's one on every album!
The movie version of "Carry On" is far more soulful than the diluted remixed version included on the album - it's still an inspirational dance anthem.
Please note that there are at least 3 international versions of this album - the North American version includes the awesome Hex Hector remix of "Until We Meet Again"; the UK/European version includes the Metro mix of "Not Over You Yet" and the Japanese version includes another Diana composition, the funky "Drop The Mask". By the way, the latter track is included on the "Not Over You Yet" single, so you may be able to find it on Amazon.
So there you have it - an interesting, contemporary album with a touch of melancholy. I got the impression that Diana dropped her guarded veneer and poured out her heart about love gained, love lost and the heartache that follows. For this reason, the album comes highly recommended.
