Man of La Mancha, the show that introduced "The Impossible Dream" to the world (and lounge singers everywhere), was the hit of the 1965 Broadway season. Richard Kiley is magnificent in his career-defining performance as the deluded wannabe knight Don Quixote. I've never seen this show on stage and my first exposure to the music was the Sony CD Man of La Mancha featuring Placido Domingo, Pandy Patankin, and Julia Migenes-Johnson. Despite lackluster reviews of the disk, I enjoy it, and when I saw this version at a second hand book/music store, I decided check it out too. My initial impression was that the Sony version was the better disk but decided to compare both versions by setting up a playlist in Media Player, playing tracks from both version back-to-back.

After that test, I have to agree with the reviews here that Richard Kiley is the superior Don Quixote. Domingo's voice is, of course wonderful, but Kiley acts the role better on the CD and Domingo's accent is a major distraction.

In the role of Aldonza - no contest. Julia Mingenes-Johnson's singing and performance on the Sony version is far superior to Joan Diener's. I didn't have to hear the tracks back-to-back to realize that. Ms. Diener's performance just grated on my ears from the beginning.

Bucking the crowd, I prefer Mandy Patankin's Sancho (Sony version) to Irving Jacobson's. I may be biased, having had more exposure to the Sony version, but Patankin seemed to be trying to inject a bit more feeling into the character. Jacobson, singing in an annoying, scratchy voice, came across almost like a cartoon trying to fit in among live characters. It seems like most people either like Patankin or hate him. Guess I'm one of the former.

The Orchestration does seem brighter/clearer in this version compared to the Sony version, but, in general, the tempo on most tracks seems slower than the same tracks on the Sony version. I preferred the up-tempo, Sony versions of "The Barber Song", "Little Bird, Little Bird", "The Dubbing" and "A Little Gossip".

In Summary: For Kiley's Don Quixote, you'll probably want this version, but for tracks featuring Aldonza (and maybe Sancho) you'll want to check out the Sony version. Since I have both disks, I will probably come up with a mix of my favorite tracks, in general, favoring the Sony disk but substituting the tracks that feature Richard Kiley's Don Quixote where I can.

beautiful music for a haunting story............2007-06-07

I remember reading excerpts from Cervantes' DON QUIXOTE, as a Spanish student, way back in junior high school. The saga of the madman fighting windmills and pursuing his illusions [and delusions] was very sad, but very romantic at the same time. When the musical adaptation, MAN OF LA MANCHA, was brought to the stage in 1965, Richard Kiley (as the title character, Don Quixote) absolutely transfixed the audience with his sensitively heartfelt portrayal of the tragic madman. The plight of Don Quixote, who travels on horseback, with his faithful companion, Sancho Panza (Irving Jacobson), and absolutely lovestruck by kitched wench Aldonza (Joan Denier), is alternately pathetic and profound. Perhaps one of the best known (and most remade) songs in the repertoire from LA MANCHA, is "The Impossible Dream." Richard Kiley really make it his own, here, and after you hear his version, it's hard to listen to others' versions of it. It's just not the same. Though, this story is anything but joyful, the music will glide through your ears and carry you on a surrealistic journey through attempted triumph and (ultimately) tragedy.

Don Quixote.......2006-09-14

Back in High School my band leader, Mr. DeYoung, decided (agianst much opposition from those of us in the band let me tell you) to have us perform select pieces from this musical

I hated the idea. But when we began to play, he even had us watch the musical, I fell in love with the melody. The many songs of a man who believes the best in the world. YOu find that in Dulcinea, The Impossible Dream, etc.

From one maginificently rendered song to another, you can be lost in its melodic elegance.

My favorite song is the initial rendition of 'Little Bird, Little Bird'. It's a soft song, sung as a love ballad. In the musical you discover it's being sung to a local whore by a bunch of randy men. Despite that, I still like it.

This along with others are among the great works of the stage!

Magnificent voices.......2006-07-05

I've ordered all four of the audio CD's in the series - Sacred Moment, Sleep Ease, Non-Thinking and Quiet Thoughts. Described as " ... to heal and slow down a busy mind'. My reviews of each are similar in their praise and satisfaction. They are 4 terrific guided meditations. I've personally found it difficult to meditate without some assistance and rarely have time to go to a meditation center, many of which have limited sessions. What I was searching for was a guided meditation that could guide my positioning and mental focus and then provide soothing music to sit with. There are two components to each CD, talking with background music and then a period of just music. I've tried other similar CD's but didn't use them for long because, for some reason, I just couldn't get relaxed by the audio portion. That was not the case with these CD's. Pakvilai's gentle soothing voice is so beautiful and relaxing, I never tire of listening to it. The timing (about 30 minutes) on each CD is perfect for the morning before work and before going to bed at night. These CD's will work well for both beginners and experienced meditators. The music background on each CD is different and truly relaxing.

Quiet Thoughts focuses on learning how to slow down your thinking. It starts with basic guidance and flows into how to be present with what you are doing and your surroundings and how to quiet your mind and keep it at ease. She guides you on how to relax your entire body. As she speaks, she pauses just long enough for you to digest what's she's said and then moves on.

Non-Thinking focuses on learning the freedom of non-thinking. Pakvilai varies her introduction and guidance enough so that each CD is different and refreshing. In this CD she focuses on your mind and how to follow your thoughts at they arrive and leave, then how to focus on non-thinking - by focusing on breathing, your body feelings and the present moment. She guides you on how to detach from your thoughts during meditation, just by letting your thoughts gently flow in and out of your mind as you observe them arriving and leaving.

Sacred Moment focuses on finding present moment awareness. It starts with basic guidance and flows into a wonderful description on how to bring your focus to the present moment and keep it there when thoughts arise. She guides you to think about each moment as being sacred and how to feel still, calm and free.

Sleep Ease is all about getting you so relaxed you fall asleep. The introduction is different in that you are instructed to lay on your back. This CD focuses t getting you to relax your entire body. Pakvilai gets you to the point of feeling like you are as light as a feather and floating on a cloud. She slowly guides you to focus on your entire body, part-by-part, from head to toe. I've found this particular CD invaluable on those days when I'm under a lot of stress and can't easily fall asleep or sometimes when waking up in the middle of the night with a monkey mind, I listen to it to put me back to sleep.

Looking Forward, Looking Back.......2007-03-02

Ove the last decade or so, Radiohead has created some of the most complex and futuristic rock music out there, and I wondered if a solo pianist could really capture their essence on a single instrument. However, O'Riley does a marvelous job, and brilliantly conveys the melancholy, mysterious, and introspective qualities of Radiohead's music. His renditions of "Fake Plastic Trees" and "Let Down" are particularly powerful. What I really loved about this cd is while I could follow all of the songs he played, at times I felt like I was listening to an breathtaking piano sonata by Mozart or Beethoven, and even a Nocturne by Chopin. Overall, this is a faithful interpretation by an excellent musician who honors one of the greatest bands in recent times, while also paying hommage to his musical heritage. This cd is a must for even the casual Radiohead fan or anyone who enjoys the piano.

i love almost all kinds of music. piano and radiohead really works for me, i liked the whole thing. if you can get into some piano, you can get into this cd. if you dig radiohead, get into it purely because someone took the time to put some awesome songs into yet another form for more audiences to get into. its beautiful. thats all there is to say.

a transcription worthy of Franz Liszt.......2006-12-08

This is a beautiful recording. Try playing it for music loving frends who would never listen to a band like Radiohead. They won't believe it when you tell them the source of this richly textured heartbreakingly melodic tour de force. I'm in my late 50's and love Mahler, Sibelius,and Beethoven. I also love Radiohead, Sufjan Stevens, John Fahey and Wilco. Good music can come along in any time and I'm glad that Christopher O'Riley loves Radiohead and transcribed it for solo piano; he's missed nothing in the process. If your not choked-up by the end of this CD, music must not be your thing.

Sleepytime music.......2006-03-27

Being the total Radiohead fanatic that I am, I decided to pick this up when it came out... perhaps a fresh take on their music would breath some life back into the songs I've been listening into the ground, I thought. So I took it up into the mountains with me and listened to it for a bit. My reaction to it now is similar to then: it's a dreamy if somewhat insubstantial collection of vaguely familiar tunes.

All of the playing on this disc is superb on the technical level... obviously O'riley is a top notch classical performer. The arrangements are a mixed bag, though. There are some amazing renditions on here - see the impressionistic 'Everything In Its Right Place' and the melancholy coffee house arrangement of 'Knives Out'. Some others are also quite listenable, including 'Subterranean Homesick Alien', 'Exit Music', 'Bulletproof', and 'Motion Picture Soundtrack'. However, the upbeat pop tunes have difficult translating to solo piano. the Pablo Honey tunes suffer the worst here, and feel slightly unnatural; perhaps like a classical pianist paying tribute to a favorite band, rather than the more personal adaptations that make the 'Knives Out' arrangement so effective.

Overall, a nice cd to put on in the background when you're reading or settling in to bed, but Radiohead fanatics beware - don't expect anything that lives up to the band's immense standards.

I didn't even know Radiohead songs...but now I've listened to the originals and can hear how O'Riley captures the songs on the piano. This is a great album.

To dismiss the first album by L.A. girl band The Like as the product of mere nepotism -- band members Z. Berg (guitar/vocals), Charlotte Froom (bass) and Tennessee Thomas (drums) are the progeny of A&R man Tony Berg, producer Mitchell Froom and Attractions drummer Pete Thomas, respectively, while the album title winks at a hit by the equally gene-connected `60s teen-rock trio Dino, Desi and Billy - would be to miss one of the most assured and satisfying debuts in many a year. If anything, that music biz lineage has only steeped them in a rich, impressively eclectic range of influences. Deftly produced with an ear towards sonic depth and emotional complexity by former Prince bandmate Wendy Melvoin, the ethos here is considerably more intriguing than cliched, jangly West Coast Bangles guitar pop. Though barely out of high school, the trio instead dishes up elegiac, shimmering gems like "We Are Lost," and "The One" with wistful weariness, while injecting more indie-spirited songs like the hook-rich "Bridge to Nowhere," "Mrs. Actually" and the thumping openers "June Gloom" and "What I Say.." with inflections of everything from The Pretenders to more contemporary UK acts like Ride and The Sundays. Berg's voice is a marvel of mature, expressive restraint that belies her tender age, while the rhythm section of Froom and Thomas power it all with inventive, airtight chops throughout. --Jerry McCulley

Love this CD.......2007-04-17

I was a big fan of The Sundays, The Cranberries, The GoGos, etc. so "discovering" The Like was fun for me.
Saw them on London Live and then bought this CD. A very good debut album. Great CD for jogging/working out too (I mean there's a couple of slow ones I bypass if I'm running.)
You won't be disappointed with this CD - HIGHLY recommended.

The Like has a lot to like.......2006-11-18

I saw these girls opening for Muse this fall, and while I should mention that I'm the kind of guy who gets easily bored with opening acts, I have to say that I was quite entertained by them. The Like might be compared to girl bands like The Donnas, but while The Donnas seem to play the same old punk riffs, The Like seems to have more substance and the songs sound non-repetitive. Some few tracks sound a bit bland, but nonetheless The Like seems very promising. I had the chance to meet them after the show and they were incredibly nice. Sadly they were sold-out of albums because I really wanted to signed copy.

I'm looking forward for their next work

Catchy power-pop, very much to my liking!.......2006-08-05

The Like's debut album, "Are You Thinking What I'm Thinking?", leads off with its two strongest songs. "June Gloom" is instantly infectious and just the right song to get you moving and excited about the rest of the CD, followed by "What I Say and What I Mean," which is an edgier song but still catchy. If the whole CD had been like these first two songs, it might be one of the best CD's I've heard in a long time.

Make no mistake, though, it's still an excellent CD. While the rest of the album is not quite up to the standard of the first two songs, it's still quite good and holds up to multiple hearings very well. Other standout songs are "The One," "Under the Paving Stones," and "Falling Away." Performances throughout the CD are consistently good and surprisingly mature. Z's vocals have pretty impressive range and depth, while Charlotte's bass and Tennessee's beats provide the perfect musical landscape. For the most part, the music here is well-produced and just fun to listen to, but there is a hint of emotional depth in songs like "Waves That Never Break" that will keep you coming back for more.

Taken all in all, "Are You Thinking What I'm Thinking?" is an impressive debut. It will be something I listen to often, and I'll definitely want to hear what's coming next from The Like.

A great debut album.......2006-04-24

This intriguing first album from this all-girl band shows great promise. The singer,Z Berg, sounds like a young,breathy version of Debbie Harry and has a formidable vocal style.The group shows off a distinctive,punky,solid sound and is an excellent instrumental band in their own right despite a solid musical pedigree.
They consist of Z Berg(vocals),Charlotte Froom(bass,vocals) and Tennessee Thomas(drums,vocals}.

The opener"June Gloom",has Z Berg crooning like she means it,with quite a powerful chorus line -"looks like the end of days,but it takes so much more,for anyone to say"
I really liked this song.
The mood continues,with the more upbeat"What I Say And What I Mean",with Z's intense vocal:"Never going back and forth I'm only going forwards,that's what I keep saying".
This girl could be going places.She has the charisma and the voice for success.

On "You Bring Me Down" she sings "you wake me up when you're around". It's a love song,quite subtle,analytical and clever,with a smooth tune;and quite singable.
There's an undercurrent to it and a melancholic feel.

The next track "So I'll Sit Here Waiting",with its dreamlike quality,churning guitars and decisive drumming.Ms Berg's voice suits this song well-she has some lovely flowing vocals here and the backing is excellent. This should be the next single release,by rights.
"Bridge To Nowhere" is more straightforward - it doesn't quite hook you in the same way as the previous few tracks,but nevertheless the effect produced has no less impact on the ears and the senses.

"Once Things Look Up"is rather ballady,with Ms Berg's voice hitting all the right notes,but it is a little predictable.

"Under The Paving Stones",another ballad-style song,but a bit more lively and yes, dare I say it,again rather predictable.Are The Like running out of steam halfway through their debut?

And they started so promisingly!

Ms Berg's breathy vocals carry this tune along;she has her own singing style and manages to resurrect what could have been a rather humdrum song by injecting feeling and passion into it.

More breathy words from Z, on "Too Late,"backed by some imaginative and tuneful guitars. However,this could be perked up a little,in spite of the dreamlike quality of the backing.

Back to predictability again,on "We Are Lost". Similar guitarwork backing as on the previous song, and the same dreamlike quality. This could get into a rut,in spite of some pretty harmonies from Ms Berg.

"The One"- the next song,carries much more substance,with a clearly identifiable tune and some good lyrics.

"I'm not shouting-I'm just talking
You're not listening-you're just larking
Take one hint to get another
In one ear and out the other."

I found myelf singing along out loud to this song.
It even has,dare I say it? drama, and a large dollop of 60s harmony in there in that chorus-hang on tight to it.

The next song is back to more plodding predictableness,but held together by Z Berg's breathy,emotive voice.

On "Falling Away",Ms Berg sings "In your arms my whole world's falling away"(this one has a definitive chorus)
"I'm sorry that you couldn't stop to stay"
she sings,somewhat sarcastically.

One of the best songs on this album,with the most impact.
The next song,"Waves That Never Break" is a slow,sad ballad,rather beautiful.....
"Waiting alone in the darkness
Smiling and falling
Too frightened to say
We can't live this way"
Ms Berg's imploring tone makes us feel for her in this song.

"One Step Ahead"-a passionate song,shows Berg's voice in good control above the band's measured backing,
"It's hard to stay
one step ahead of you"

This first album from The Like shows surprising control and maturity from the three girl band members,who are blossoming into a force to be reckoned with.
Let's hope this debut brings them recognition.

Pretty good.......2006-04-07

this album is a nice album. its pretty good and i like that they're a girl band and they sound like girls, but not mariah carey girly or tori amos. they are harmonious and smooth and you could lie and daydream to this album. its a good album. i only gave it 3 stars, though (i woulda gave it 3 and a half) because at times i wish they'd gotten louder or more raw. and at other times i wished they'd deviated from the regular... verse-chorus-verse-chorus-bridge-chorus repeat sequence. i think they're next album will be killer if they choose to experiment a little more.

After hearing "A Lovely Day" on my local station, I set out to find this CD and the artist. Since receiving it, I have all but worn it out.

Victor Fields has that smooth sound that makes you want to keep playing it over and over. He makes all the songs great and has a sound like no other. My suggestion, buy it and listen for yourself.

This is the best Cynthia cd. Now Cynthia is a freetyle queen and always has been anyone from Miami or New York can confim it! This is where freestyle began, but technically it started in New York. Then eventually also based out of Miami w/ a different sound. There is a difference between N.Y. and Miami sounding freestyle. However, this cd appeals to both. The VERY 1st single was "How I Love Him" f/k7, also known as Kayel, lead singer of the ever-popular freestyle group TKA. other hit releases include: "Like A Star", "If I Had The Chance", "Thinking About You", "I Never Said". All which are great songs and of course thier is another personal favorite of mine...."Save Your Love For Me". There's of course other great hits but you'll have to discover them for yourself!...ENJOY!

Cynthia came back strong in 1999 with "Thinking About You". This is her best album so far in my book. Cynthia's voice has gotten stronger and smoother, next to Judy Torres, Cynthia is my favourite Freestyle diva. My favourite tracks "I Never Said", "Like A Star" & "Thinking About You".

BEST FREESTYLE ARTIST ALBUM!.......2000-10-17

This is the best cd i ever got that was freestyle. Cynthia sings freestyle,and her whole cd is like almost all freestyle wit some tyte beats. My favorite song on the cd is IF I HAD THE CHANCE that had a tight beat, and so did THINKING ABOUT YOU! Like other artists liek ANGELINA, they dont compare to CYNTHIA because her whole cd is good and probably only has 1 or 2 songs that arnt. Overall i give this a 5 star because its tight, shes koo so its all good. Compare this to JOCELYN and BUFFY and all them other freestyles they dont come close to bein better than CYNTHIA unless they come up with some tight shiet. Go out to the cd store and grab her album! and anotehr thing it downst sound like 80s music like other freestyles.

This goes to show that freestyle is not dead. This album shows how much she has grown w/ the music. The album is not totally just freestyle, she has a little r&b, house, latin, you name it. My favorite tracks are Thinking about you, Like a Star, and Ive never said. This a must for all freestyle lovers and a must for people that like dance music in general.

A violinist with a niche.......2004-10-06

Jerald Daemyon seems to have found a void of sorts for the violin - R&B/light jazz fusion. Nothing spectacular about his playing per se, but his arrangements and musical ideas are uniquely his own. Daemyon wrote all but 2 of the 9 tunes and arranged and produced all of them, playing keyboards and programming the drums in the process. I particularly enjoyed his cover of the old Stylistics tune "You Make Me Feel Brand New". One criticism I would offer is the overuse of delay on the violin. At times it makes you wonder if it's designed to cover up some of his technical deficiencies as it doesn't really seem to add anything to the music.

This young man is phenomenal. I wish he had more material. I look forward to hearing from him in the future.

As good as it gets without introducing anything new.......2006-02-12

Simply put, this album contains two kinds of tracks; - ambient soundscapes with sampled nature, calm atmospheres and peaceful synth-pads; and new-age/pop compositions, pretty structured if not a bit over-produced, but gorgeously arranged and polished by the master himself. What else can I say? Only that with all the catchy flutey melodies flying around my head, I still prefer the ambient ones?

Back to his roots!!!.......2003-08-16

I have been a fan of Kitaro for years, and I am glad to hear that he has returned to his roots. This CD brings back thoughts of Flying Celestial Nymphs ,Tenku, and Silk Roads but, with a more traditional sound. Of course his earlier works will always remain his best by far, and his later CD's became more of a commercial success. But on "Thinking of You", he has returned to true his origin. Kitaro has a way of taking you on a journey through mind, body, and soul and this CD does just that!!!!!

A mix of earlier styles.......2000-08-02

This is an interesting mix of the slow moving, tranquil sounds we got in Silk Road II, with the majestic, moving pieces we got in Light of the Spirit. This is good overall, but not his best work. Long live the Kitaro field!

the sounds of heaven.......2000-06-24

This recent CD is one of my favorites. There is a simplicity to the compositions with the melodies having an almost folk tune quality to them. "Fiesta" makes my spirit soar ! This is music of such purity and like a sunset or a starry night, is serene and uplifting. The packaging also echoes the simplicity. In black and white with the titles in blue ink, and a beautiful photo (by Kitaro) of an old piano. It has no commentary, letting the music speak for itself. Bravo Kitaro !

There have really been very few artists who've came out the past few years that have really made a great impression on music. Norah Jones has been one of those who have shined on that trademak, with her Jazzy somber mellow songs. Thinking about You, the first single from her hyped third record, Not Too Late, keeps the signature flow from her music flowing swiftly, without losing the feeling of her songs. I like this song because it speaks from the heart, and it is very sophisticated. I really hope that the next single from the record is just as good as this one. It is one of the best songs on the radio right now.

An example of Rodgers trying to fit in a new contributor of lyrics, but the match wasn't there, yet even so, his melodic mastery shone through.

Much better than it's reputation........2006-11-02

Despite being considered a flop by it's creative team, this is the one of Sondheim's "lyrics only" musicals I return to most often. It's melancholy charm is underlined by Rodgers' highly hummable tunes combined with Sondheim's reluctant lyrics. They are partly bitter and partly forced "happy". I love it.

An unappreciated score by a fine cast.......2004-02-04

Even though the show was not a success and the authors have all taken their turns at trashing it, this recording makes a strong case for DO I HEAR A WALTZ.

It's another fine record production by Goddard Lieberson. Rodgers (who was from all reports drinking and quite nasty to his collaborators) came up with many of his trademark melodies and the title song won deserved popularity outside of the show. Sondheim for his part creates some crackling good lyrics ("Someone Woke Up"; "What Do We Do We Fly!") but its an odd score... you hear the romantic older style love songs from Rodgers with fairly basic (dare we say dull) lyrics then some wonderful lyrics set to atypical Rodgers tunes. Then suddenly it all comes together in the final few numbers: The Title Song, "Perfectly Lovely Couple" and "Thank You So Much." Maybe it's a show that Encores will revive someday. In the meantime we can appreciate this original cast album and thank Sony for releasing it on Cd with good notes and a synopsis in the booklet!

"Someone Woke Up.....".......2003-10-04

So begins the delightful DO I HEAR A WALTZ?, one of Richard Rodgers' most accomplished post-Hammerstein scores. Not since his days with Lorenz Hart had Rodgers written such an energetic, youthful and joyful score. Stephen Sondheim's lyrics are witty and wonderful. DO I HEAR A WALTZ? received a lukewarm response from critics and audiences, lasting only 220 performances at the 46th Street Theatre.

Based on Arthur Laurents' play THE TIME OF THE CUCKOO (which turned into the film SUMMERTIME starring Katharine Hepburn), the story concerns a teacher, Leona Samish (played by Elizabeth Allen), who's holiday in Venice is dominated by her romance with the handsome Renato di Rossi (played by Sergio Franchi). There are also a host of colorful supporting characters including the ebullient hotelier Signora Fioria (Carol Bruce - SARATOGA).

The score is delicious with the opening number perfectly setting up the scene ("Someone Woke Up"), to Fioria's big number "This Week Americans", and the 11 o'clock number "Stay". There's also the Title Song, sung for all its worth by the delicious belt of Elizabeth Allen.

For all the problems that plagued the musical during its inception, nothing shows on the sparkling cast album, where it sounds like the biggest hit of the season. For Broadway fans, this CD is a must-own.

You MUST hear a 'Waltz'!.......2003-06-16

Please,give this a chance. Forget what you've read and just sit and listen. Read the libretto, available at lots of libraries, or read "Time of the Cuckoo" which Arthur Laurents based "Waltz" on. The combo of Rodgers and Sondheim is always sneered at--maybe, like me, you will see that Rodgers romanticism and Sondheim's sort of optimistic realism are actually the perfect mismatch for the endearingly troubled characters in the play.

Mr.Producer, forget all the basicstage gossip and let the score sell the show for you. Audiences, demand your favorite companies mount a production!
