This would have been a fine collection of Dance Remixes,B-sides & concert tracks,with 2 newly recorded selections and 4 selections previously vinyl-only,but careless mastering by Universal Music of Holland accidentally renders half of the Disc Two selections in Mono sound.These are 1980's stereo recordings.How do we exchange our defective product for the corrected pressing? This is heartbreaking.

Level 42 Ultimate Collection Vol. 2.......2005-08-12

This CD follows up the Vol. 1 Level 42 Best of collection which includes extended versions and remixes, as well as two recent tracks featuring Singer/Bassist Mark King and the Bacci Bros.


I would recommend this item for fans who want a good collection of alternate versions on CD. The packaging is very well done. Please see the customer images of the cover. These were scanned by Ronald Kuipers.

Note: This CD is in the process of being reissued by Universal due to a mastering error that was discovered.

I must admit I had never really liked oldies much or listened to them before I made this purchase. I bought this 2 CD set when I walked into a music store and heard these great sounding vibes coming from the speakers. I think it is amazing! The first CD is upbeat and peppy, with great classics like My Guy by great artists like the Supremems, Barry White, etc. The second CD was more of a surprise than the first one, a sweet smooth collection of timeless love songs, like Oh Girl, and If You Don't Know Me By Now... Not sappy, but romantic.I would recommend this perfect combination CD to anybody who has even a remote interest in great music that has become a classic all unto itself. Great Buy! Get it today!

Put together by a network of collectors, this series seeks to be the complete and definitive collection of Lee Wiley's early (and often best) work. The sound quality is topnotch and the playback speeds (often a problem on recordings of this age) are pitch-perfect. This is one of the best in the series so far (although vol. 3 may be the best Wiley disc out there) and is hugely satisfying. The price, you may have noticed, is startlingly low. The cds are pretty bare-bones in terms of notes, but this was a choice made to facilitate the low cost and the collectabilty of the entire series. The company's web site features more details on the music, and even printable cd notes. Also, the company will mail additional notes at no cost. Seems a strange set up, but to come out with complete recordings of this quality at this price is quite an achievement, so I'll go along with whatever they can cook up. Current and potential Lee Wiley fans should not hesitate to purchase the discs in this series.

Pure Nusrat.......2004-11-26

BEFORE he became the toast of the West and was misguidedly lured into posh studios to record meandering fusion albums with well-meaning but culturally blinkered Western musicians, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan made some seminal qawwali albums in Pakistan that presented his sublimely intense and spiritual music in its purest state.

He was already recording albums, on which he shared joint credits with his uncle Mubarak Ali Khan, for EMI in the '70s. Many of these are apparently still in print, though this pair of double-disc compilations is really all the serious listener seeking to discover the unvarnished glory and essence of Nusrat's artistry needs to bother about.

There's something engrossingly elemental and visceral about the performances on these discs, which capture Nusrat and his party in a studio atmosphere that's totally devoid of artifice (there's hardly any trace of artificial reverb or compression) that you have to re-align your technology-tainted hearing to accommodate the revealingly raw nature of the proceedings.

Allowed to perform like they would on a regular stage, the master and his supremely empathetic accompanists marvellously harness the spirit of the moment in mesmerisingly organic call-and-response patterns that celebrate the power of transcendental devotion.

The first set, featuring selections recorded between 1978 and 1982, boasts the most affecting and absorbing performances. The melancholy 'Haq Ali Ali Moula Ali' is 28-minute-plus of breathtaking soulful majesty. Nusrat's voice here is such a cogent force of power and passion that by the time the track ends, you feel like you've had an experience of the deepest, most tranformative kind.

The more celebratory tracks on the set, including 'Ek Din Mahi De Ghar' and 'Kamli Wala Mohammad', transmit a different sort of energy, though they're no less stirring.

While the recordings on the second set, dating from 1983 to 1984, sound a bit more polished, they're as direct and potent as the earlier studio takes. But the programme, featuring such almost pop-inflected pieces as 'Tere Main Ishq Nachae', 'Menoon Yaar Manawan', 'Yaad-E-Nabi Ka Gulshan', 'Saiyyo Mahi Vichhar' and 'Mera Piya Ghar AAya', is less challenging.

The more streamlined songs don't offer as much room for vocal improvisations as the tracks on the first set.

Still, the master's voice transcends the sporadic mundanity of the material, making you hang on to every rousing, sonorously stretched phrase.

This is the real deal, so be prepared to fully surrender your heart and soul to the man for four hours or so.
