The best husband wife duet in American music .......2006-06-05

Steve and Edye have sung together longer than any musical husband and wife duo that I can think of. I actually believe they are better singing together than each is as a soloist. They simply have a magic and warmth together , and give a sense of joy in their singing. They are best, in my opinion, in the upbeat songs .
They make music the listener can relax and enjoy with.

A Bit Corny but Absolutely Delicious!.......2004-03-11

This combo cd recorded is absolutely is perfect for anyone who loves or even likes Steve & Eydie. All the songs are catchy, perky and delightful. Simply listening to this cd will make you happy. The sweetness of their youth and marriage is evident in every song. My husband, who is a die-hard "60's man (Dylan, Collins, Baez) even gets a charge out of it! Nothing beats Eydie's Applie Blossom Time!

Steve and Eydie do a marvelous job on yet another album. With all the best, and they are the best(!) hits of their still-going career, this album is not to be missed. Steve and Eydie--it's a perfect match!!!.......2007-02-06

Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gorme remain one of the greatest singing duos of the 20th century. This CD contains ten songs from their LP entitled Eydie Gorme and Steve Lawrence Sing the Golden Hits. Steve and Eydie complement each other beautifully regardless of whether or not they sing together simultaneously or if they take turns singing a duet. Their solo numbers astonish you with their terrific sensitivity as well. Their voices are vibrant, fresh and full of energy. This CD demonstrates their wonderful artistry.

The CD song stack starts off strong as Steve and Eydie belt out "I've Heard That Song Before." This ballad has incredible strength to complement its romantic quality; and the musical arrangement is beautiful. The lyrics highlight the beginning of a strong song stack, too. "I'll be With You In Apple Blossom Time" is another shimmering hit from a while back but Steve and Eydie sing it fresh here as if it were a brand new song. "Bei Mir Bist Du Schön" boasts another strong, upbeat melody with sublime lyrics.

Other great songs on this CD include the beautiful "Marie" delivered by Steve with a big band arrangement; and Eydie bats out a particularly romantic rendition of "I Don't Want To Walk Without You." Steve gives "Green Eyes" the romantic treatment with a fantastic musical arrangement. Neither Steve nor Eydie ever sing a single superfluous note.

Indeed, most if not all the musical arrangements boast the same strong big band/swing flavor. Don Costa arrangements will always stun you! The music highlights the same incredible sensitivity that Steve and Eydie display as they sing these awesome hits.

The CD ends as Steve sings "I Hear A Rhapsody." This song hints at the impressive set of words and music Steve and Eydie give you as you listened to this impressive CD.

The cover artwork is excellent, too.

This CD is a blessing for Steve and Eydie fans and fans of classic pop vocals will love this CD.

Spare Your Ears!.......2006-11-30

This is one of the worst, most execrable recordings of early Beatle classics I have ever had the misfortune to hear. The Chipmunks' dreadful falsetto sounds like a record (pre-CD) played at the wrong speed. Their dreadful screeching of Beatle hits is enough to drive you up the first tree. How cruel to treat Beatle songs this way! Get the REAL Beatles instead. You will be very glad that you did.

Good marketing ploy - drawing a moptop on a popular character and throwing in a Beatle twist was sure to sell. This however, is a stinker.

What a treasure!.......2005-05-27

I bought the ORIGINAL Liberty Records lp, in '65. Still love it. My buddies and I learned the harmonies to the Beatles songs from this album, plus had so much fun in the process. This was not an attempt to cash in. This was a serious musical venture-in fact, THE VENTURES played the music on this album!

The great guilty pleasure record album of my misspent youth.......2002-10-14

I rise to the defense of this album, which is one of my all-time favorite guilty pleasure albums. The first record album I ever owned was "The Beatles Second Album," although I never did pick up another Beatles record until "Abbey Road." But for some reason I picked up "The Chipmunks Sing the Beatles Hits," and it became a personal favorite. My brother had the two Chipmunks Christmas albums, but if I was going to spend my allowance on a record album it was going to be something I could play more than one month of the year. I have no idea what finally happened to that record album, which is long gone, but decades later I won a gift certificate for having the high score for the week at Trivial Pursuit Interactive and was happily surprised to learn that the CD for this album was something I could pick up (appropriately the other CD I got was for George Harrison's "Greatest Hits").

It all began in 1958 when Ross Bagdasarian released his novelty song "The Witch Doctor," under his stage name of David Seville. His previous success had been co-writing with his cousin the novelist William Sayron the hit "Come on-a My House" for Rosemary Clooney. Bagdasarian recorded most of the song in his normal voice but when he got to the chorus the Witch Doctor's magic words were recorded in a sped-up voice that we know recognize as the Chipmunk sound. This was down by recording the "Oo-ee, oo-ah-ah, ting-tang, walla-walla, bing-bang" at half speed and then replaying it at normal speed, which made the voices sound a full octave higher. Later that year Bagdasarian released "The Chipmunk Song (Christmas Don't Be Late)," which also hit #1 on the Billboard chart. The next thing anybody knew CBS was airing "The Alvin Show" in prime time. You can laugh, but "The Chipmunk Song" also was #1 and won three Grammy Awards (for Best Children's Record, Best Comedy Record, and Best Engineered Record - Non-Classical), and was also up for Record of the Year (it lost to Domenico Modungo's "Nel Blue Dipinto di Blu (Volare)"). So, believe it or not, the Chipmunks had the bona fides to do a cover album of the Fab Four.

It is not surprising that on the cover art for this album Alvin is playing guitar and harmonica like John, Simon is the left-handed bass player like Paul, and Theodore is making like Ringo on the drums, leaving David Seville to be George. This album was released in 1964, which meant Bagdasarian could pick from the Beatles singles and albums through "A Hard Day's Night" to pick the dozen songs that make up this collection adding up to 28 minutes of music. The first two tracks, "All My Loving" and "Do You Want to Know a Secret," were actually released as a single and showed that the Chipmunk voices could work on slow tempo songs as well as the fast ones. For the most part the Chipmunks sing these songs straight, although in the mold of "The Chipmunk Song," David has to reign in Alvin a couple of times. Except for "Twist and Shout" all of the songs are Lennon & McCartney compositions and given that their distinctive harmonies were a large part of the charm of those early Beatles songs they are perfectly suited for the Chipmunks (Bagdasarian does all of the voices).

Chipmunks & Good Memories.......2002-08-14

For as long as I can remember, I have loved the Chipmunks. This is my favorite CD and LP. It brings back wonderful memories of my parents playing the LP over and over again at our urgent requests, and never getting tired of doing it. My parents had eight children to please and the Chipmunks were our favorite. An additional memory is a friend who came to visit that always asked us to play the "Chipmunk Beatles". He was a teenager and we loved the fact that he wasn't too cool to listen to them with us. He died of Hodgkins disease, but his memory lives on when we play this particular CD or LP. It's the best of the Chipmunks!

"The Early Beatles"-- CHIPMUNKS style.......2002-05-03

Considering all the artists who've done covers of Beatles songs or even entire albums worth of Beatles covers, it's not really surprising that Alvin, Simon & Theodore should have tackled these 12 songs back in 1964. Especially considering their already-in-evidence rock & roll leanings ("The Witch Doctor", what the did to "Comin' Thru The Rye" and the immortal rocker "The Alvin Twist"). That said, this is far from my favorite Chipmunks album, or even my favorite Beatles tribute album (though it's a FAR sight better than, say, BUGS & FRIENDS SING THE BEATLES, in part because at least this one features the "original" Chipmunks).

Of the songs covered here, my favorite by a wide margin is, surprisingly, a slow one-- "P.S. I Love You", which I included on a "Beatles Tributes" comp tape I made up for myself some time ago. If you're an absolute "completist" when it comes to The Chipmunks or Beatles tributes, you'll probably love this. As a fan from the early 60's, I think they fared far better (thanks to Ross Jr.) on the 1980 & 1982 albums CHIPMUNK PUNK and CHIPMUNK ROCK (both infuriatingly out-of-print at the moment!).
