5 out of 5 stars It was dropped, simply due to the fact that it was hot.......2005-08-15

This is one killer album. I enjoyed it from cover to cover and it opened my ears to another style of acoustic guitar in music. Although it is not nearly limited to the strummy strum of Phil Elvrum, the advent of headphones in such situations is helpful, if not only due to the fact that the nuances found in the stereo sound is helpful. Just be careful to not turn the volume all the way up to experience every little nook and cranny, simply because the album is so well paced and varied that you will go from drifting down stream to flying past comets within moments of eachother.

If you don't believe me, ask these fools.

1 out of 5 stars "We Can Sing Off Key and You Can't Do Anything About It"........2004-04-16

This should have been the title for this release. This is the absolute last time that I buy something based upon recomendations from strangers - my bad. I have to say that there are some brief snippets - very brief - of song ideas, but no fully realized listenable compositions. Frequently, when it seems like something listenable comes along - there they go again - harmonizing - or so they think. 11 minute sonic spectacular? Have any of these reviewers ever listened to Pink Floyd? Or Frank Zappa?

One reviewer wrote "At various points, vocal harmonies approach each other, seemingly at random, until perfection is achieved". The only explanation for this is that this reviewer is President of the Tone Deaf Society of America. This band couldn't carry a tune in a bucket. If you want harmonies that frequently reach perfection try the Hollies, Crosby, Stills & Nash or the Beach Boys.

If you are starting to think that I must have a prejudice against indie music, think again - I have a collection that includes Neutral Milk Hotel, Olivia Tremor Control, The Shins, Beulah, Apples in Stereo, Let's Active, Kings of Leon, Of Montreal and Elf Power just to name a few off the top of my head. My musical interests are broad and I think I am very open-minded when it comes to the creative musical process. I grew up on The Stones, Bob Dylan, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles... but I have a disc that I love by The White Stripes. If it's good, it's good... this release by the Microphones isn't.

2 out of 5 stars let's face it together.......2003-06-15

Something I realized about the Microphones: They're not that interesting

4 out of 5 stars Hearts in Right Place.......2003-02-25

The sense of trying a little too hard is pervasive throughout this album. However, the fact that Microphones is even trying to create thought-provoking music, built on experimental songwriting techinques and sonic landscaping puts them so far ahead of the monochromatic Top 40 FM radio crowd that "It Was Hot..." is at least worth a listen. The band thinks it's a little too good for its own sake. And ironically, the composition of the album is hurt by the inclusion of its best song. "The Glow" is "It Was Hot..."'s most involved exploration of form, melody and sound construction. A few of the other tracks, however, offer the impression of having been cobbled together haphazardly with the expectation that listeners would be so wowed by the centerpiece track that their critical threshold would drop. That's a shame. The talent so evident in "The Glow" should shun the inclusion of the uninteresting filler, "Drums."

Secondarily, a few of the songs evolve in very pleasant ways. However, most seem to remain too close to their middle ground. Fuzzed out and imprecise is nice, but when you're able to create the beautiful textures seen in traks like "Something," and "The Gleam," it makes no sense not to work the other tracks as thoroughly.

One listener complained that moments of pure beauty were sparse and too far between. I disagree with this assessment. At various points, vocal harmonies approach each other, seemingly at random, until perfection is achieved. This album is about the search for these moments, and any attempt to water down "It was Hot..." with pop and brightness and assonance wouldn't help the album in any substantive way.

Again, the band merely needed to work harder to present a uniform product whose average more closely approached the genius of "The Glow" and "Something."

5 out of 5 stars A good Microphones introduction.......2002-11-26

After hearing The Glow, Pt. 2, I was most interested in pursuing this band called the Microphones. My next step, as I saw it, was to move backwards and purchase their previous album, It Was Hot, We Stayed in the Water. (Ironically, the title comes the song "Where It's Hotter Part 3," which does not appear on this album).

This was a monumental purchase. It Was Hot, We Stayed in the Water is almost as good an album as The Glow, Pt.2. It's infinitely more accessible, with songs like "The Pull" and a cover of the Eric's Trip song, "Sand" gently introducing newer listener to the quirky experimental style of Phil Elvrum, the "band's" only static member.

The centerpiece is an eleven-minute song entitled "The Glow," which is one of the best experimental pieces I've heard in a long time. It goes from a mild voice with acoustic guitar ("The glow came down from the hills"), continues into a nearly-dissonant chorus with organ, back to the guitar-voice combo, then the creepily angelic voice of Mirah ("Hey, wake up, it's me, the glow"). Then, with a sudden crash, it becomes a rock song ("I started to glow"), complete with "woo-woo" backup singing, before eventually fading out into shadows and whispers. But it's even more than that, what with all the layering of instruments and voices. "The Glow" is definitely the highlight of an already great album and is alone worth purchasing It Was Hot, We Stayed in the Water.

4 out of 5 stars Greta is a Great Talent.......2006-02-23

This second CD is not quite as strong as her first, but still excellent. Gaines makes music that Sheryl Crowe and Lucinda Williams wish they could make. Highly recommended, hope her career gets a boost somewhere so she can get a bigger exposure. You have to go to her website to get these titles now.

5 out of 5 stars Just as good if not better than her first album.......2005-09-07

I can't believe that not one person has reviewed this album yet on Amazon!!!! This is one of the better albums I have purchased this year!!!! This is a rock-pop album with elements of blues and country, but don't let that put you off (and I am no fan of country). The strength here is in her song writing which at times can be edgy, and although not as strong as her first album, it is still very good and way better than the schlock that the record companies would have us believe is music. If Greta keeps this up, I will be obligated to buy all her albums in the future!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Chick Is Not A girl..........2004-04-01

The previous reviewer got it right - Chick Graining is male...

I think that I prefer Laughing Down The Limehouse to this album but also that's a little bit like saying that I prefer Champagne and Lobster to Filet Mignon and Bordeaux.

My biggest regret so far in this life was working late one night (in London, England) instead of taking a friend's advice (Hey Chas!) and going to see Anastasia Screamed.

If you have Dinosaur Jr., Pixies, or even Deep Purple Made In Japan in your record/cd collection then you'll like this music.

I don't have any idea how you would dance to it though...

5 out of 5 stars The last reviewer is confused.......2004-01-25

This is a great album, but the previous reviewer's reference to a female leads me to believe he has this confused with a release by pop singer Anastasia...or something.

Chick Graning's intense vocals would never be mistaken for a female, and the dark, guitar-driven music of the album would have little appeal to anyone looking for pop music.

Highlight here is inclusion of backing vocals by Tanya Donelly, which, delicate as they are, blend nicely with Chick's.

Long out of print and hard to find but well worth the search.

4 out of 5 stars Strong voice, powerful lyrics.......2000-08-08

Her voice is amazing and powerful, and the lyrics are empowering. She doesn't have the typical "angry chick" type of music, but it is strong and is just as noticable. It's fun to dance to the beat and is always exciting.
