5 out of 5 stars Cooler Retro-Technopop.......2004-10-04

«Auto:Matic» von I Satellite ist einerseits eine wunderbar altmodisch klingende Scheibe, die aber andererseits mit moderner Technik aufgenommen wurde. Wer auf alte OMD, Gary Numan, Kraftwerk und vor allem auch John Foxx zu «Metamatic»-Zeiten steht, der wird hier voll bedient. Im Vergleich zu dem ebenfalls auf diesen Zug aufgesprungenen Act I, Synthesist schneidet I Satellite besser ab.

4 out of 5 stars Cool Music.......2004-05-16

I Satellite definitely has potential! The only problem with this CD, and the only reason I dropped it to 4 stars, is the volume control. Some songs automatically drop off in volume, forcing the listener to adjust the sound manually. But maybe I just got a bad pressing.

Most of the songs are terrific. Where in the World instantly conjures up memories of New Order, while Orion, upon close listen, contains elements of the Doctor Who theme. I emailed the band a while ago about Orion, being a huge Doctor Who fan. They wrote back admitting that, while recording this song, they too noticed elements of the Dr. Who theme creeping into the music. Any song that reminds me of my favorite tv show is a classic as far as I'm concerned. Bubble Boy is as bubbly as the title suggests, with an unmistakeable 80's synthpop feel. Out of Space, one of my favorites on the CD, is a great atmospheric finish to a pretty good CD.

All in all, except for the poor pressing, you can't go wrong with this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome cd!!!.......2004-01-28

I highly recommend automatic by isatellite. Being a fan of early 80's synthpop I immediately connected with this cd. I wish there were more cds like this one. The synth sounds are amazing. You can really tell that isatellite used some cool analogue gear.I can't wait for the next release.

5 out of 5 stars Super stuff!.......2004-01-01

What a wondrous blast from the past this CD is! Pulling influences from New Order, Gary Numan (early stuff), Alphaville, Men Without Hats, Anything Box, Kraftwerk, OMD and dozens of other early 80s synth-pop pioneers, I Satellite have crafted a masterful disc that will take you back right back to those halcyon days of 1980-83. Pop tunes, such as Bubble Boy and Where in the World? are excellent dance tracks, while Out of Space and Robot Parade are teriffic mood-setting songs. The arrangments and instrumentation are spot-on throughout and every track has something to commend it. My only complaint is that the singer's light and pleasant voice is sometimes a bit too buried in some of the mixes (making the lyrics hard to discern), but it is only a (very) minor nitpick on a CD that is worthy for anyone's synthpop collection. Highly recommended - so buy it already!

4 out of 5 stars Interesting mix of influences, worth a listen if a synth fan.......2003-11-23

This was a speculative purchase based on the editorial reference to Numan. There are flashes of Numanesque arrangements, particularly on "I Want You", but nothing more substantial than that. Some Japan-like arrangements together with their brand of instrumentation also feature here and there. However, this album is mainly a mixture of early Kraftwerk, John Foxx, OMD, Human League and (fleetingly) Yazoo influences. Yes, it's definitely retro in its feel and sound, not out and out copies of those artists mentioned, although very similar. You could easily have been listening to this in '82 and the that fact it's new (sort of) in 2003 is 'gutsy' to say the least. The instrumentals work better than the lyrical songs in most cases. The guy has a very 'Paul Humphries' type of voice in places. Cool. It verges on cliched pretentiousness at times, but just manages to avoid going the whole hog. A lot is being made of what was used to make this music. Whatever. Music is about what is sounds like, not how it was created, written, performed or recorded. This music sounds pretty good to me. If you're a fan of electronic/synth pop, you'll find something of interest here.
