In these days of the crossover, it is hardly surprising to find two great opera singers making a foray into numbers from Broadway musicals by such composers as Cole Porter, Stephen Sondheim, and Andrew Lloyd Webber. What's remarkable is that they seem completely at home in this music. Both say they grew up listening to it, and indeed they approach these songs with no less care and seriousness than they'd give the most demanding operatic arias, and without a trace of condescension. However, their vocal, expressive, and interpretive styles are very different, both in the solos and the duets. Terfel projects assertive manliness, tender, intimate affection, and rollicking humor without external effects, using only his incomparably sonorous voice and powerful personality. His diction is impeccably clear, and though he has sometimes let his theatrical flair spill over into Schubert songs, he is the soul of simplicity here. This is in stark contrast to Fleming's tendency to exaggerate colors and dynamics and to turn sentiment into sentimentality. Moreover, though she claims a background as a jazz singer, her "crooning" sounds artificial and unnatural. However, her top notes, culminating in a triumphant high C at the end of the final number, ring gloriously. Her voice glows and shimmers with irresistible luster, soaring from seductive whispers to thrilling climaxes. The program features a great variety of love songs, and includes an antiwar protest (from Beautiful Game), a celebration of the American dream (from Ragtime), and a rousing fun piece (from The Music Man). Unfortunately, even the best songs are marred by thoroughly corny arrangements. Listeners will find their own favorites, but the real "stars" on this record are the two singers. --Edith Eisler
Customer Reviews:
Delightful .......2006-07-24
I truly enjoy Terfel's vocal talent and found it to be well suited for this genre. Fleming's impeccable soprano voice is a bit overpowering for this style of music. (I own this CD)
A Master Class in Singing.......2006-06-20
This CD is a must-have for any person interested in the singing art. Ms. Fleming and Mr. Terfel gives new light to these Musical Theatre classics. Their fine vocalism in the musical theatre genre coupled with the depth of musicality and dramatic phrasing in each of the selections is truly a breath of fresh air. This recording is indeed a Master Class!
Bryn is swell, but the bombast is annoying.......2006-05-03
Love Bryn Terfel, the finest bass-baritone in Opera. Love Renee Fleming's luscious soprano. But the arrangements! Kettle drums and bombast and bang, bang, bang! Once Renee starts swooping, things go downhill, with little redemption.
It starts out beautifully. "Not While I'm Around" has never sounded more intimate to me than Terfel's caressing pianissimo. Fleming's "Moonglow" is stunningly good. Terfel makes a medley out of "I Don't Remember You and Sometimes a Day Goes By" that makes you want to cheer, and Fleming does a lovely Sondheim medley as well. Bryn sings "Stars" and makes me long for him in Les Mis. And then...things tend to go downhill. The bombast takes over and gets to you - it overwhelms two of the biggest voices now recording. Then Fleming begins to swoop and scoop, over-coloring and often coming off as simply self-indulgent, reminding one of a kid who makes a point of putting his face in a camera shot.
I don't mind Bryn as Prof. Harold Hill - I frankly think the Welsh accent is kinda cute - and it doesn't bother me on "Wheels of Dream," either, but Fleming seems to have lost her mind on that great song, and rather than indulging her, it would have simply been better left off the album. Ditto "All that Wasted Time" which is pretty much unlistenable. Ms. Fleming needs to stop thinking she is a jazz singer.
The four stars are because this album does contain some truly GLORIOUS moments, particularly in the duets, and in Terfel's solo's which are warm and memorable. Without him, the kettle drums and Fleming's self-indulgence would have made the whole endeavor unbearable.
Surprisingly Fine Crossover from Fleming and Terfel.......2006-04-18
Bryn Terfel and Renee Fleming are two of the most acclaimed opera singers of our day. But the musical theatre fan who puts on their Broadway CD, RENEE AND BRYN: UNDER THE STARS, expecting to hear a carelessly compiled hodgepodge of songs sung by voices ill-suited to them is in for a big surprise, beginning with the first phrases of the duo's warmly sung "Not While I'm Around" from SWEENEY TODD. True, these singers' beautiful voices have greater power and range than even the best of the Broadway stars', but this is an asset in these songs, most of which are either semi-operatic in nature or call (like THE MUSIC MAN's "Seventy-Six Trombones") for such an outsize personality as Terfel's. Fleming's sensuous and tonally gorgeous rendition of "Moonfall" from THE MYSTERY OF EDWIN DROOD can be placed among her very finest recordings, operatic and otherwise. And Terfel is ideally suited to both "Pretty Women" from SWEENEY TODD and "Stars" from LES MISERABLES; few if any Broadway Javerts could match the impact of his "This I swear by the stars!" Kander and Ebb's "I Don't Remember You" and "Sometimes a Day Goes By" make a perfect medley here, as do Sondheim's "I Wish I Could Forget You" and "Loving You" from PASSION. And though I don't care for the Andrew Lloyd Webber selections (ersatz Puccini) or the Jason Robert Brown one (which sounds too much like a pop song), Terfel and Fleming's singing of them is beyond reproach. The program ends with a bang: a rendition of "Wheels of a Dream" worthy to stand beside the now-classic one by Brian Stokes Mitchell and Audra McDonald on the original cast album of RAGTIME. Welshman Terfel's natural accent is noticeable here; but if one imagines him as, say, an Irish immigrant married to an African-American woman (as Fleming here sounds uncannily like McDonald or like Leontyne Price) his accent is appropriate and his voicing of the "bridge" section ("Oh Sarah, it's more than promises/Sarah, it must be true...") especially moving. Fleming's ecstatic final high note makes one want to applaud and cheer, both for the song and for the successful "crossover" effort.
BREATHTAKING VOCAL MAGNIFICENCE~BRAVO!!!.......2004-10-11
So captivating are these incredible singers in the glorious live concert "Under The Stars" creating an unforgettable musical masterpiece of epic proportions that is so moving and great to watch that I ran out and purchased this studio recorded Compact Disc the next day!! The brilliance of the live broadcast carried over into the recording studio capturing Renee and Bryn at the peak of their incredible powers emotionally and vocally making them the most effective crossover artists since the great Barbara Cook who like Miss Cook sing with emotion that is accurate for this type of material which is usually not the case with classical voices. Renee Fleming sings with genuine passion and stirring emotions and her timing is absolutely flawless and this lady has alot of soul and the Torrie Zito arranged "Moonfall" is a stunning masterpiece that clearly illustrates this. A dazzling medley each show both singers in glorious peak form with Bryn splendid in the enchanting "I Don't Remember You/Sometimes A Day Goes By" and Renee spellbinding and haunting in the gorgeous "I Wish I Could Forget You/Loving You" which will make anyone who loves a great voice fall in love with this amazingly gifted singer. "Stars" features a commanding performance from Bryn that raises the roof and this is so refreshing and inspired in these musically tired times!!! This superb showcase is full of wonderfully exciting performances which are capable of making people feel again and this is what is sorely needed in music today and BRAVO to Bryn Terfel and the gorgeous Renee Fleming for achieving this with complete artistic brilliance. Captivating duets fill this wonderous collection and never have classics such as "Not While I'm Around" or "All I Ask Of You" been sung more brilliantly than here. Renee is magical with "Hello, Young Lovers" while Bryn is commanding and winning with "Pretty Women". Renee's stunning "All The Wasted Time" is a vocal and emotional tour-de-force that is like a wild roller-coaster ride that you won't want to end as this is one of the most riveting songs that I have ever heard from a Broadway score and this certainly must be the definitive performance of this great song. This lady can really really sing and this is some deeply serious singing~WOW!!! Gorgeous together again in the beautiful "How Could I Ever Know" which is hair-raising and wonderfully soulful and sophisicated together in Cole Porter's "So In Love". A grand finale by these two awesome vocal wonders lives up to expectations being a complete blowout vocal festival and they definitely do not disappoint here!!! "Wheels Of A Dream" is mesmerizing and soars to magnificent heights with Bryn and Renee in peak form singing to the skies and hitting notes that I swear I have never heard before~BRAVO!!!!!!! You are both magically inspired and simply put as good as it gets!!!! Highly recommended if you love two awesome vocal wonders at their absolute peak in a magnificent beautifully orchestrated setting!!! Thank you Bryn & Renee...

Tenors on Tour - Versatile and Beautiful.......2001-06-20
Tenors on Tour is a CD which will live forever. The opening songs by Placido Domingo, His arrangement of Blue Moon and Moon River, set the tone for the CD. To hear Richard Tucker do "Climb every Mountain" was a wonderful trip down memory lane. Who will ever forget him? Placido continues with Broadway..Maria from West Side Story and a Beatles song "Yesterday". Mandy Patinkin's "Over the Rainbow" is classic and wonderful! But in my opinion Jose Carreras has the most "goose bumping" production on the entire CD. His Ave (Maria) is so beautifully done it may just bring tears to your eyes. The "King" Pavarotti is the "clean-up Hitter with selections from LaBoheme, and he does "O Sole Mio" as only He can do it. This CD is a treat for anyone who enjoys fine music. You will play it over and over again.

Yet Another Excellent New Year's Day VPO Concert.......2005-04-27
This year's concert was devoted almost exclusively to music by Johann Strauss II. Without question, it is among the Vienna Philharmonic's best New Year's Concerts, led by a long-time collaborator at the podium, American conductor Lorin Maazel, who has conducted the orchestra since the early 1960s. The orchestra responded enthusiastically to him, following his tempi even when he wasn't conducting (In two works he plays violin solos, most notably the "Tales from the Vienna Woods" waltz.). On a somber note, the traditional final piece of the concert, Johann Strauss' Radetzky March was not played, a silent tribute offered to the victims of the December 26th earthquake and tsunami in the Indian Ocean (However, the other traditional encore, the "Blue Danube" waltz was played.). Fans of both the Vienna Philharmonic and Lorin Maazel will be interested in acquiring this CD.
Another Beautiful Concert.......2005-02-24
Tremendous in the Dobly 5.1 surround sound. Great ballet to the Blue Danube waltz. Maazel does some violin solos on the Tales from the Vienna Woods

A surprise hit from Mehta, full of joy and brio.......2005-10-18
This 1990 New Year's concret from Vienna is much more fun than the ones from Maazel, Muti, Harnoncourt, Kleiber, or Ozawa. In fact, in terms of sheer joy an affection, I haven't heard its like under Karajan or Abbado, either, much as I admire them. This evening actually sounds like a holiday celebration. There is lightness and sparkle in everything being played. And the excellent sonics make the orchestra sound sweet and immediate.
What a surprise from Metha, who long ago fell from the first rank of conductors and often flirts with being a hack. Here he shows his Viennese training, and one remembers that Decca had him recording with the Vienna Phil. at the outset of his career. The program features 72 min. of polkas, marches, and three big waltzes: Wiener Blut, Tales from the Vienna Woods, and of course the Blue Danube to wrap things up before the audience gets to join in for the Radetzky March finale.

Overlooked Kander & Ebb Score.......2006-06-10
"Woman Of The Year", the 1981 musical, based on the classic Katherine Hepburn/Spencer Tracey comedy, brought Lauren Bacall back to Broadway. Ms. Bacall's voice is not stellar, but her presence is captivating & works well with the terrfic Kander & Ebb ("Chicago", "Cabaret", "The Rink", Kiss Of The Spider Woman") score.
Unfortunately, this show lost Tony's top prize to "42nd Street" & has largely been forgotten. Hopefully, it will return as a revival on The Great White Way sometime soon.

I Wrote The Book
The Grass Is Always Greener (great duet & show's most memorable song)
"Woman Of The Year" is a Great Musical.......2004-05-02
"Woman Of The Year" is a Great musical play based on the Katherine Hepburn Spencer Tracy comedy MGM movie of the same name, "Woman Of The Year".The story of "Tess Harding" a powerful career woman who meets and marries "Sam Craig" a powerful career man and the problems with them both having careers with her career more public than his.She becomes the "Woman Of The Year".She's a person who just about everyone in the world knows and she knows just about everyone in the world by 1st name. The movie was adapted for the stage and set to music by Kander and Ebb.The show opened on Broadway in 1981 with Lauren Bacall originating the role on stage.Raquel Welch and Debbie Reyonlds also played the role on Broadway. The show ran more than 770 performances on Broadway and won many Tony Awards like for Best Musical,Best Actress and Best Featured Actress etc. Barbara Eden played the role of "Tess Harding" in the national touring production of the musical play "Woman Of The Year" in 1984.The CD is Great."Woman Of The Year" is a Great musical and has Great songs."Woman Of The Year" is one of the Best musical plays of all time and this CD is also one of the Best.If you Love Theatre especially Musicals and plays then you will Love "Woman Of The Year".
An Overlooked Gem in the Kander and Ebb Cannon.......2000-04-10
"Woman of the Year" has long been an overlooked gem in the great Kander and Ebb cannon. Not as flashy as "Cabaret" nor with the grit of "Kiss of Spider Woman" or "Chicago", indeed it is probably one of their most atypical scores. Despite her obvious vocal limitations, Lauren Bacall proves once again (as she did in "Applause") that the acting of the song is so much more crucial to its presentation than a pretty voice, particularly in the rousing title song, and the plaintive "I Wrote the Book". The supporting cast lends fine backup support in such cuts as "It Isn't Working" and "Happy in the Morning". And of course, probably the most familiar of the songs, "The Grass Is Always Greener" is always a joy to listen to...indeed it becomes, along with "The Apple Doesn't Fall" from "The Rink", a sort of Kander and Ebb calling card. This Kander and Ebb score, along with lesser known works such as "The Act" and "The Happy Time", deserves to be rediscovered by a new generation of musical theatre lovers,in the same way that "Chicago" and "Cabaret" enjoyed recent second lives.
Thrilling, Unforgettable, Must have.......1999-08-05
Magnificent. The thrill of the captured performance of Lauren Bacall with the magical words and music of Kander and Ebb make this totally unforgettable. I love this CD and own almost every theater cd every made. Those who also loved Bacall in APPLAUSE, take note, this is a superior score (by far) and Bacall's performance is extraordinary. If you have been waiting for APPLAUSE on CD, get WOMAN OF THE YEAR. You'll be thankful and discover a new world of joy.
EXCELLENT !!!.......1999-05-20
I lost my Lauren Bacall album from Woman of the Year almost a decade ago....!!!! I have been trying everywhere to find it - New York - New Jersey - even in CA... With no luck.. Just the other day, I found an old Brenda K. Starr CD on Amazon.com and it clicked - why not try to find this.... And to my amazement - it was here! Thank you Amazon!!! I just placed my order with priority overnight shipment - I can't wait to sing along with Lauren.... I can still hear her singing those great songs - especially "One of the Boys," "Woman of the Year," and "The Grass is Always Greener."..... This will be like reliving my early 20's..... I can't wait....

A great budget release!.......2006-02-24
I actually thought this was a very good budget release: having already bought the DVD, soundtrack from the movie, and original cast recording, I still wanted more: this CD is an entertaining re-record of the popular hits...sure, the cast is unknown, but I enjoyed this CD, especially at the super-cheap price: worth checking out if you are a big Chicago fan!
A mistery, but not that bad........2003-12-27
Maybe is the midi-like keyboard instead of a band, the performances that sometimes are good or even stage caliber on the vocal side but most of the times they lack of the "character spirit", or how they ended adding small parts of the Broadway Revival album (like the Hunyak speech on the Cell Block Tango) but after hearing this album you are totally puzzled for the lack of information about the performers, and how good this album could be if they'd fixed the metioned problems.
Only knowing that it was recorded in London in December of 2001 from a 'Live' performance (that actually could be a "one-take session on a studio" performance), when in some moments the female leads sounded a bit like the West End stars, Ute Lemper as Velma and Ruthie Henshall as Roxie, and in others it seems that just one lady is doing all the parts in the Cell Block Tango, and just one man did We Both Reached For The Gun (including the Mary Sunshine and Roxie parts), the MIA liner notes and not being listed on the label's website give to much room for speculation, you can even think is a sort of a demo recording, if you want to listen to something different and you're a die-hard Chicago fan, give it a chance.

Customer Reviews:
The best ever version.......2002-06-07
The wonderful cast transports you to the realms of Gilbert and Sullivan, to make you feel that you are experiencing a first night in 1881! John Reed, as Bunthorne, an aesthetic poet is superb, camp, subversive and a complete fraud. If anyone is not aware, the story of the opera is based upon the idiosyncracies of the Aesthetic movement in England of the 1880's and Gilbert used the public parodies of his friend Oscar Wilde as his major source. The rest of the cast, chorus and orchestra , under the long experienced 'Goddie' are superlative and make for one of the finest line-ups in D'Oyly Carte history. Revel and enjoy, for this is quite the best.
The Golden Cast of D'Oyly Carte!.......1999-04-13
My wish had always been to see John Reed and the D'Oyly Carte Company in a performance of Patience. My mother had done so, remarking that, 'You'd need patience to watch it', she was coloured in her opinion, since she wanted to see 'The Mikado', but had gotten the wrong tickets! The recording, made in 1961, is superb in every detail. You are with the cast, on stage, in the auditorium, it is such a 'live' performance. The dialogue is delivered exquisitely, whilst the singing is uniformerly of the highest standard. I recently portrayed 'Bunthorne' and throughout my performances, I felt that I was continuing the legacy of Gilbert and Sullivan. All the past history of performers were there. I feel that Patience is a magical Savoy Opera. Do not miss the opportunity to own such a definitive performance. Maybe the subject of the 'Art Nouveau' periodof Victorian England is dated, but as one critic has already stated, every generation 'throws up' its poseures, to be knocked. 'Ah, me! lack aday!' BUY IT!
The Definitive Recording.......1998-12-09
For those who prefer the traditional Savoyard renderings of the G&S canon, this is far and away the best recording of this parody of the cult of celebrity. John Reed leads the cast as a delightful Bunthorne, and the recording contains all of the opera's dialogue. "HMS Pinafore," "The Mikado," and "The Pirates of Penzance" may be better known, but "Patience" is deserving of a wider audience.
