Four Letter Lie ~Let Your Body Take Over~.......2007-01-06

Is it any surprise that a band that seems to have fashioned themselves after Underoath are being produced by Matt Goldman (of Underoath fame)? Let Your Body Take Over manages to find the small niche that Underoath missed; the progression from They're Only Chasing Safety and Define the Great Line.

Four Letter Lie combines the guitar heavy tone of Define the Great Line (""Full Tilt Boogie"") with the pop hooks (""Naked Girl Avalanche"") that TOCS was filled with. But don't be fooled, Underoath isn't the only band that these guys are borrowing from thought as it's hard to hear ""Feel Like Fame"" and not pick up a Fall Out Boy vibe.

It's almost impossible at this point to invent anything new in the screamo genre and most bands realize that. Bands are refining their sound as opposed to redefining it and with some bands that works just fine. Four Letter Lie falls soundly in that category--they're not doing anything new and probably wont do anything new in the future--but what they do is high grade pop screamo at it's very best!

I am a avid listener of the band Four Letter Lie. Despite the fact that they do tend to lean towards a Underoath tone and do have many of the same kinds of riffs and styles, I have to say this band also brings many other different feels to the music. The first thing that got me hooked to Four Letter Lie was seeing them live. For many, the fact that the sound seems like a underoath wannabe is immediately overpowered if they do not experience them in a show. The great melodys they pull in to this record really makes each song replayable a million times without losing interest. Starting out the album was the song "Full Tilt Boogie" which couldn't have been a better choice. This song screamed power and heavyness from the start and the fact that the chorus was harmonized made it all the more tolerable to non "screamo" fans. The second song kept up the momentum and still incorporated much of the screaming from vocalist Brian Nagan. By the third song, their first single "feel like fame", things were unfortunately toned down. Now this is the song that confused me very much. I will admit it is a very catchy song and many great aspects of the band are shown within it, but for me when I got a demo of their one song and heard this, I was alittle disappointed. I was expecting heavy guitars alot of screaming and alittle harmony tracks right off the bat, but this song seemed to be a total genre change. Although there are a few scream tracks on this song, I can honestly say it is not the best track on the album.The next song up was called " The Ordinary Life" that was previously released on their older demo. Basicly everything was the same in this song but I like the build up throughout the song and I was hooked on this song long before "Let Your Body Take Over" was released. The next song "It Was Business Doing Pleasure" at first did not appeal to me because it is just a interlude that is repetative with the same chord progessions and vocal lines, but after many times of listening to the cd fully, it fits in very nicely with the songs around it. Track 8 entitled "Baby, Your My Bad Habit" is another re-release of their old song "Lets Call It A Night" on their previous demo. This song was also pretty much the same but the snyth tracks added in it makes it so much heavier and brings a cool feel to the mix. The next song "Firecracker" was a nice slow track and had nice guitar parts in it but again was alittle out of place in the mix of all the heavy songs. Another re-recorded song, "Tell me about Everything", was such an amazing new transformation from their older song. I was so impressed with the intensity the song started out with and the various guitar effects used to make it sound a bit different. The other great thing about this song is the breakdown where Brian Nagans vocals really come in to play and the drums and the guitar are so heavy its an undeniable mixture. Next up was the song "Cowboys and Indians" which had a guest track from Doug from The Sleeping. Although this song really has no structure and you can't distinguish what is a chorus or a verse or a breakdown, the song is very heavy and and an angrier song. The last song song "Rocky Loves Emily" is yet another step away from the style of their songs but remains quite heavy and ends the cd very nicely with the closing orchestral tracks added in. Musically, this cd was a good accomplishment but the mixing and production of the cd seemed to kill alot of the power in the album. Even though Matt Goldman (producer of copeland,underoath)was doing the producing on this album, it turned out so bland and dry that I was almost turned off. The guitars seem to be thin and lifeless and very quiet in the mix. The drums are also very quiet in the mix and seem to have a boxy and tame sound to them. The vocals seem to be recorded very well and were perfect in the mix. The only thing that was really way to loud was the bass guitar. It seemed to be turned up louder than any of the guitars and in no way made the mix in the song sound better. Bass lines are meant to be a glue that holds together the drums and the rest of the guitars but should not overpower everything else. Other than these disappointments, I was happy with this bands music and cannot wait to see the production and sound of their next one!

Having earned his composing stripes after the 1960s, John Adams had the pioneering work of Steve Reich, Philip Glass, and Terry Riley close at hand as he ventured into his trade. And, while minimalism's historical continuum helps place Adams, he used Reich, Glass, and Riley (among others) only as a starting point. And here's proof: a 10-CD retrospective of nearly all Adams's recorded compositions on Nonesuch Records, the label that also issued Steve Reich 1965-1995 and Kronos Quartet: 25 Years. Adams's Harmonium, a choral work of startling energy and effervescence, appears here in a new recording, as do distillations of both The Death of Klinghoffer and Nixon in China, two path-clearing operas. Over the span of a career covered by Earbox, Adams has returned minimalism to traditional instrumental ensembles as well as to projects that at once advanced a political commentary and took that commentary back to orchestral audiences. And so, in far less time than his predecessors, Adams created works that now play like standard repertoire pieces: The Wound Dresser and Shaker Loops and the Violin Concerto--all of them are here. What these works demonstrate is a fierce creativity on the one hand and perhaps a hunger for commercial advances on the other. Adams may at times be a bustling free thinker, but he sounds ever conscious of what audiences are listening to. As for the works themselves, they remain every bit as daunting as when written.

Some may object to particular selections. I Was Looking at the Ceiling and Then I Saw the Sky, for example, hardly ranks with Adams's best work. But this box isn't a mere best-of; it's an almost-all-of. At times terrifically American--especially in the news-aware operas and their narrative pragmatism--Adams well deserves a major box set, and its coverage is appropriate to his varied, stylistically diverse output. As with any large-scale retrospective, Earbox--which fairly bristles with Adams's new composition, Slonimsky's Earbox--has spots where fans might balk at the quality of the composer's writing. But it's got a fantastic accompanying booklet along with its many hours of inarguably modern and thoroughly listener-friendly music. --Andrew Bartlett

Never before in my life was i moved so intensely and directly by classical music. I put the first cd in my player and a few minutes later tears are flowing. I find myself dancing and moving to a rythm i already seem to know. Wow, i just have to share that.

John adams is one of the most popular living composers of"modern" classical music[I believe the cutoff point, though arbitrary is usually WWII}.I came to him late, through my husband. Modersn classical music , I said? What the hell is that?My husband kept playing bits and pieces of adams for me, and more and more i found myself amazed. and swayed. His operas have been groundbreaking{Nixon in China} controversial{Death Of klinghoffer},his compostions sublimely beautiful{shaker Loops or harmonium].HIS STATURE IS WORTHY THEN OF SUCH A MONUMENTAL CAREER SPANNING BOX SET.This 10 disc set[great value, again from NONESUCH}encompasses Adams' entire career,and though there are some misses here{I was looking at the ceiling and then i saw the sky doesnt quite fit},it is still magnificent. the Highlights are ,{for me} the Wound Dresser, Chamber symphony,Violin Concerto, of course, Shaker Loops and Harmonuim are wonderful. The true jewels here are Nixon in China,the Chairman dances and the Death of Klinghoffer,which is simply a masterpiece. The set comes with a wonderful book, which contains essay's by Robert Hurwitz {An Uncommon Man}renaud Machart[John adams as seen from europe} and Essays before an earbox by Adams himself.A Chronology and dicography are included. I must agree with Mr. Bartlett, particularly with regard to "Ceiling." It may well be because his Violin Concerto and Harmonielehre are so powerful. 4.5 stars.
Interesting, and likely intentional, is that two names in the extensive liner book fail to mention two great and glaringly obvious precursors: Carl Orff and Raymond Scott. Without "Carmina Burana," there would be no "Harmonium." Orff has his mark all over Adams's gifted and epic compositions. Similarly, though there are glib references to "cartoon music," the polymath engineer/musician Scott is a seminal figure in American music, and casts a large shadow over the witty juxtapositions and sense of play one loves in Adams's work. In all, an excellent career overview.

As a composer, I'm staggered that anyone could fail to be gripped by this music.

That anyone can use the words "spoiled, overrated" amazes me. I emphatically disagree with "A music fan"'s review.

I don't think it's "mind-numbing"; I think it's spiritual and exciting. To me it's the most substantial music being created in our times.

I'm really sorry that anyone could fail to enjoy it, and really recommend others to listen for themselves.

Justin Timberalke is the GAYEST ballerina I've ever seen in my entire life. He's really fine but his girlie voice ruins his music. That is why I can't enjoy his music. He's realli fine but can you imagine what he sounds like when he has an orgasm?

Good mixes, but not enough of them.......2005-04-16

This is a good set of remixes. First there's the album version. The Sander Kleinenberg mix is a little funky, a little, trancy, a little housey. Different feel, but good...but TOO short! It's just the "radio edit." The Paul Oakenfold mix is a little longer, but still short. It feels more like the original version, with a slightly different bassline (I've been hearing this version on the radio). And finally there's an instrumental of the album version that does retains Justin's beat box vocal part.

There are more mixes of this song to be had...and they should be released on CD single...the video version alone is longer than the LP version and should have been on here!

the pop version is really good but i'd rather the sander kleinenberg's remix off course i'm a dj so that's the reason why i liked it so much. and the oakenfold version is good too but it is juts like another style of him. it look's like break beat or somethig like that.

Yuck! the song stinks, the singer sucks as he can't sing, and the music is just horrible. please, do not waste your money on this. but could have been epic. AFI's music transcends the genre boundaries quite well, and makes for great listening even when stripped down to a string quartet arrangement. Unfortunately Vitamin Records are so quick to capitalize on the band's success that they don't take the time to go over this album and fine tune it to perfection. As noted in the other reviews some of the songs are mislabeled. Further evidence of Vitamin Records' haste at caching in on this can be found in the lax musical arrangements, particularly on The Leaving Song Pt 2 (mislabeled as A Single Second). Although it is one of the standout tracks here one of the most powerful parts of the original song is the bridge, where Jade Pudget's guitar delivers a creepy albeit powerful build up for the final chorus. On the string arrangement the bridge is simply alright, and all four instruments play the exact same notes instead of the complex buildup featured on the original version. This problem plagues a lot of the album, the bridge on Girls Not Grey is less than stellar as well, the cello and viola take up too much space when the violins (lead guitar and vocals) should be more prominently featured.
Don't get me wrong, this album is amazing, and I love it, but it just urks me that it's not the epic that it could be. When you listen to Apocolyptica you know that they are truly feeling the music when they play Metallica, listening to this you can tell that these musicians are just playing some sheet music to pay the rent.

A Change of Mood.......2005-10-26

Well, I think this is a great CD - I love punk as much as the next man (Bad Religion, Pennywise, AFI, Strung Out etc) but even I sometimes want to relax and not jump around the room like an idiot. I found "Punk Goes Acoustic" a nice way to listen to great songs in a more mellow style, and this string quartet cd also does that perfectly. Definitely worth getting, or even buying for your mum for xmas.....

Great music that really makes you appriciate AFI.......2004-11-26

This album really shows off AFI's songwriting talents because it strips down the melodies to classical instruments, and it is performed beautifully. A must for any AFI fan or Classical, almost Opera-esque listener

Good, but what's with the titles?.......2004-09-08

If you like string music and you like AFI, you should certainly enjoy this. However, someone at Vitamin (the record company) apparently wasn't checking their facts - the entire track list is mislabled terribly except for two songs, and the label mishap apparently carried on over to Amazon.com. I've corrected the track list here:

Great followup to Volcanic Rock.......2007-02-26

Buffalo created another fine hard rock album in 1974 with "Only Want You for Your Body." They were a confident group, coming off of their incredible Volcanic Rock lp, which was successful in Australia but not overseas. This album is tighter, faster and wilder, unlike the sludge heavy stoner rock tunes of the previous album. The opening track, "I'm a skirt lifter..." is a riotous, riff crazy anthem to the joys of chasing the ladies. "Dune Messiah" is a reference to the Frank Herbert science fiction novel. Other outstanding tracks are "Stay With Me," "What's Going On" (not the Marvin Gaye tune), "King's Cross Ladies," and "United Nations." All of these showcase heavy rhythms, blazing guitars, and fine vocals by Dave Tice. Unfortunately, the vocalist was forced out of the group by their management, as they were looking to reign in the band's "wildness" and change them into a more commercially viable and acceptable band. "Only Want You..." is a classic 70's hard rock album of a group in top form. Bonus tracks are a single version of "What's Going On," and a live version of "United Nations."
