Allison Moorer's passionate power earned her first two albums substantial and well-deserved critical acclaim and a loyal fan base. This time, she's shifted away from eclectic neo-traditionalism to more contemporary (i.e. conventional) Nashville studio arrangements, and the approach is different enough that it may prove disconcerting to some fans of her earlier albums. Still, her original lyrics remain sharp and focused as she explores a wide spectrum of emotions. The magnificent "Steal the Sun" and acerbic "Hey Jezebel" balance the melancholy of "Tumbling Down," the grim cautionary "Dying Breed," and the torchy "No Place for a Heart." While her vocal and compositional integrity remain intact, the question is what this budding paradigm shift portends for her future. Others who emerged as acclaimed neo-traditionalists (Sara Evans comes to mind) failed to significantly broaden their appeal until they firmly embraced the bland, mechanical predictability that still pervades Nashville. If Moorer is aiming for mainstream success by mollifying country radio, it's understandable. Whether that strategy works remains to be seen. --Rich Kienzle

4 out of 5 stars Change of Direction, still mostly on course.......2007-07-19

Alison Moorer takes a different tack in this album, her third album. It's not classifiable as country, as where her first 2 albums. This album has a jazz flavor in much of it, particularly soft jazz. As a whole, the album is much softer, gentler, and acoustic than her previous work. There is quite a bit of piano. The songs are slower and more reflective, kind of like a lingering thought process discussed in the lyrics and reflected by the tempo. However, Ruby Jewel is a sassy song and Going Down is very spirited. Dying Breed is a moving discussion of a family with a history of short lifespans due to substance abuse. I don't like this album as much as Alison's first 2, but don't worry, it's still worthy. Further, it grows on the listener. So if you buy it, give it a chance.

5 out of 5 stars A Touch of Yearning in the Soul of Us All.......2006-07-18

I didn't pay much attention when my daughter initially gave me Alison Moorer's "Miss Fortune" CD. When I first played it, it did not particularly grab me, but on replaying it recently I was struck by several terrific songs. There is such a touch of yearning in her voice as she seeks to "Steal the Sun," a ballad about a perfect night of love and desire that everyone has experienced at sometime in their lives and how she wants it to never end. This is a signature song and worth the price of the CD. Moorer's sense of lost love, another emotion than everyone can appreciate at some level, found in "Cold in California," "Can't Get There From Here," "No Place For A Heart," and "Mark My Word" evoke strong empathies. And her cautionary tale of substance abuse, "Dying Breed," recalls difficult situations I have experienced with friends. Perhaps I'm sentimental, but I'm not sure that's an altogether bad thing. It's far better than the alternative.

There are some of the songs that I didn't especially care for--"Ruby Jewel Was Here," and "Hey Jezebel" come to mind--since they reminded me of Saturday nights in Honky Tonks, but overall this is a very fine album that captures a soul.

3 out of 5 stars Miss (steps). Fortune (smiles...in part).......2005-04-10

I keep thinking Allison will pack more punch with her next release. This one feels uneven to my ears. It gets off to a fine start with the ballad, "Tumbling Down" (also found on the soundtrack to "the Rookie"). The pace is nice, the strings and backing vocal chorus add nicely to the overall world-ending feel of the tune. To that end, it's hard to pick up the pieces on any recording when you start at the bottom of a relationship, and it takes a while for her to get off the mat. Surely all the beautiful women with gifted voices wondering Nashville can't all be walking around with broken hearts.

I find someone like Lee Ann Wommack does so much of a better job portraying heartache and with more imaginative results on her CDs. Course, Lee Ann is wise enough to surround herself with crack musicians and singers, such as Julie and Buddy Miller. Big difference.

The next 4 cuts are undistinquished; not unlike Trisha Yearwood's most recent efforts. Fillers, without out much spark. Before I even play something entitled "Ruby Jewell Was Here", I knew we were headin' down a much traveled back road populated by the likes of novelty-type yarns such as "Ode to Billy Joe", "Harper Valley PTA", "The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia", "Me and Bobby Magee". This song is not nearly that clever, Daisy Duke.

I liked "Can't Get There From Here" well enough.
I liked "Steal the Sun" well enough.

Again with the stings and her cresendo voice dominating, one can't help thinking of Trisha, et all. Allison has a fine voice and wants us to know that "Absulutely no vocal tuning or pitch correction used in the making of this record". But having a fine vocie doesn't make for a winning record without distinct songs and writing. The over use of orchestration on most cuts is pleasant enough but seems like a crutch on these string-ballads:
Violins = Sorrow.

To call this a country album doesn't give country much creedance in this day and age. This is, for the most part, ballad-pop.

A bland idea for a song, like, say, "Hey Jezebel", not unlike "Ruby Jewell", has been penned a 1,000 times, and is less than fresh soundng.

"Mark My Words" begins the strongest portion of the CD. Allison starts to take a few chances. Who knows, maybe some 'wise' record exec. sequenced the CD, so all the fluff rose to the top, and the more distinct moments -where Allison streches out some- come through towrd the closer.

"No Place for a Heart" finally has a litle rhythm to it. Allison sounds comfortable and lets her big voice ride along the waves of the melody. It has a sligtly jazzier lilt, with neat organ and classical-tinged guitar replacing the weepy strings that drench the first 2/3 of the release.

"Yessiree" works for me. The strong backing vocals fortified by a unique arrangement that includes some crunching guitar licks and...wait for it...Horns! Surprize! Though the strings creep back in to finish the song up.

I guess the biggest veer on the CD, is on "Goin Down" which finds Allsion sucking in the seventies as she TCBs her way thru this credible Stones meets Ikettes mets BTO piano banger.
I know it's only pop, but I liked it.

The album closer finds Allison again stretching out some. "Dying Bread" finds her back in he story teller mode, but with success. Think of Cher(A Cowboy's Work is never Done) meets "Those Where the Days"(Mary Hopkins).

Overall, I'd say there were more songs I liked than disliked, but this is a medium range collection of string-laden ballads mixed in with some interesting twists toward the back end of the CD, all more facinating to listen to than another hearkbreak weeper.

5 out of 5 stars Strong third album from Moorer.......2004-03-24

On Allison Moorer's third album, we find the red-headed singer moving into a new sound. A lot of people didn't like the new sound, but I think it's great. It's still country, just leans more towards alt-country and slightly contemporary, whereas her debut was strictly traditional country. With any Allison Moorer album you can expect some meaningful lyrics, that are somewhat sad, and MISS FORTUNE offers those and more. The album opens with the dark "Tumbling Down", which had a great video. "Cold In California" is an interesting breakup song, it was the first single from the album. "Let Go" is a nice acoustic kind of track, very reflective and revealing. The lyrics on the album are very true and blunt. There's some good uptempos like "Ruby Jewel Was Here", "Hey Jezebel", "Yessirree", and more. I like the midtempo numbers like "Can't Get There From Here", "Steal The Sun", "Up This High", and the closing "Dying Breed", is another highlight. Overall, the biggest misfortune would be if you didn't give this album a chance!

5 out of 5 stars Five stars but don't buy it!.......2002-08-09

A brilliant album. I love Allison Moorer's music but (unless you are an Allison Moorer completist in which case nothing is going to stop you) don't pay the extra [money] for the one extra track on this import version. Bulley Jones is the only extra track, done "live-in-the-studio" at a guess and, though the lyrics are strong, nonetheless comes as a bit of an anticlimax after Dying Breed, one of the most compelling tracks on Miss Fortune and a very appropriate note to end on.

I bought the "extra tracks" version in the UK where it has been released as standard so didn't pay an arm and a leg for it but would advise any US fans who haven't got money to burn to avoid it and get the US version with which, if your tastes anything like mine, you will be well pleased.

5 out of 5 stars No track skipping, 6 stars to be honest..........2006-02-25

Just came across this cd, apparently a bit too late. Pure power pop perfection, jangly edgy guitars, nice melodies with clever lyrics and hooky choruses. Great for listening on the road, psyching up for a surf, driving, chilling out, one of those cds that puts a smile in your face, no matter what. The singer's voice is pretty good, soft yet powerful, no whining, good harmonized backing vocals and all.
A bit like a Gin Blossoms with less twang and more overdrive, better comparisons welcome. Super-catchy rockers and heart-wrenching ballads.
Hard to pick a favourite track but "Disappear", "Peek", "Antenna" and "Hello, Love" are brilliant. Wonder what the hell happened to this band? Definitely should've gone big..

    5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2001-02-18

This album is wonderful. i saw then live and they rock. i encourage anyone to pick up this cd :-D

4 out of 5 stars Terrific mix of melody and guitar grooviness ! !.......2000-11-15

This is a terrific collection of songs to say the least. The guitar effects and riffs lay down a terrific pop texture for the soaring vocals and "take me away" melodies. Sometimes I look through my CD collection for a disc I can play full length and not think to myself "need to skip this song". If you have ever searched for that complete album and pulled out your favorite U2 disc, then add Miss Fortune to that cherished group. In the first 20 minutes you'll be humming the choruses and enjoying the clever lyrics. There used to be a time when a rock band would write songs about infatuation and longing with genuine feeling and humor, this album returns to that original, and most organic inspiration. This may be overstating the point, but in the era or Rap/Rage-Rock groups this is a refreshing sound. This CD has been living in my car and it becomes more enjoyable with each listening. The tunes vary from bright, pushing rock like "Peek" all the way to the dreamy pop textures of "Antenna". "If You Died" wins you right off the bat with the vocally exposed verses and lyrical twists. In a time when few singers can actually sing, the vocals on this album are finely sung from graceful dovetails to ringing choruses. No cheesy production effects, just plain good singing. The songs cover a broad sonic pallet, but several of the tunes hit right between the eyes with their broad appeal. Who couldn't help but love "Disappear" at first listen ? Get it !

    5 out of 5 stars Miss F's Debut rocks!.......2000-11-15

While i don't own the CD yet myself, i borrowed it from a friend for a weekend and it's definitely the best driving pop rock album i've heard in a long time. You should definitely put this at the top of your list of Cd's to buy. It reminds me of Radiohead with a pop influence. If you don't have it already, then get it. I'm planning on getting it as soon as possible.

How many times have you been asked, "Here, give this CD a whirl, you'll really like it", only to find mediocrity at its finest. That seemed to be what was going to happen with this CD. I was a little apprehensive about listening to this SKA CD, figuring it was going to be a 'follow a no talent, college underground, it's cool to like SKA for no reason other than everyone else in college listens to SKA' band.

I was pleasantly surprised! The overall quality of the music on this CD is superb. 'Miss Fortune' is an addicting CD. I find myself spinning it often. The songs are upbeat. 'Miss Fortune' is well laid out. My favorite track is 'Girl in My Kitchen' which is about a morning after with a hangover and girl who make breakfast after a what was going to be a one night stand (At least that's how I interpreted it).

Listening to the CD, I can tell Dave's Big Deluxe has fun with the songs. They are serious about their music but do not take themselves too seriously; a trait not normally found in much of today's music.

Now I find myself one of those people asking others to give it a spin, hoping they don't set up the same prejudice I did.

Band of Pain, You're Miss Fortune (Dirter Promotions, 1996)

I'm still trying to figure out how I feel about Band of Pain's first disc. You're Miss Fortune, after all these years. On the one hand, it explores an area of proto-industrial that very few people have ventured out into, that pioneered by Maurizio Bianchi in the early eighties. Jagged synthesizer loops, ambient sound effects, no vocals (or very little), and tracks like "4'33" (if you've ever heard Whitehouse's "Birthdeath Experience," you've got the idea). There's a lot of good ideas here.

On the other hand, it sometimes seems those ideas aren't fully realized. "Beacon House," e.g., sounds as if it were planned as the basis for a more complex track, but then simply abandoned. "4'33" has much the same feel to it.

When the tracks do have a finished quality about them, there is much here to enjoy. "Blast #1 (remix)," the album's loudest cut, is exactly what Maurizio Bianchi would probably be doing today were he still the bitter, death-obsessed misanthrope of the early eighties; it doesn't quite stray into the territory of all-out noise, but it's doubtful anyone's going to describe this as ambient music. And "Comedown 5:30AM" is a perfect precursor to the better Sacred Flesh soundtrack, with multiply-layered indecipherable voices, a languid melody, and every once in a while a jag of pure noise. I just wish the whole album worked as well as the best tracks on it. ** ½
