These days she's fodder for tabloid writers and late-night comics, but way back in the '90s Mariah Carey ruled the charts. This two-disc collection offers up evidence why, for better or worse, Mariah's five-octave, pop/R&B stylings set the diva standard. Greatest Hits culls its offerings from Carey's five albums on Sony (she is now signed to Virgin), and you get all the facets of her platinum-plus sound. From the soulful smolder of her 1990 debut "Vision of Love" (still one of her best tracks) to the coyer-than-thou duet with Jay Z ("Heartbreaker"), Carey thrills, trills, and hits notes that only canines comprehend. Fans will gobble this collection up, but inclusion of some of Carey's more adventuresome remixes (e.g. the Puffy-produced "Fantasy," featuring ODB) might have made this package more noteworthy. --Amy LindenCustomer Reviews:

Carey's first post-divorce effort makes passing allusions to her ex-hubby (and label honcho) Tommy Mottola, but it doesn't dwell on them the way many similar projects do. Instead, Carey is right back to her old tricks; cooing trademark melismatic spirals through sexy, beat-heavy hits. Fans will dig the bedroom slink of "Baby Doll," the dripping "Honey" and the infectious title track (reprised, along with a bit of Elton John's "Skyline Pigeon," in "Fly Away"). The highlight is a duet with Dru Hill on Prince's "The Beautiful Ones," which just might be her most pointed commentary on Mottola. --Michael RubyAlbum Description

One of the main reasons I absolutely LOVE Mariah Carey!.......2006-11-02
Tracks like the title track `Butterfly' give us that soft side of Mariah, those ballads that made her famous in the first place, and as far as ballads go, by far her best EVER is `My All' which gets me going every time I hear it. With the Spanish guitars at her side Mariah has never been so incredibly desirable. With every track here Mariah proves that she alone deserves the title of queen of R&B, and even though after this release she had her share of minor slumps, her brilliant `Emancipation of Mimi' album has her once again at the top of her game as if she never left. Definitely, one of the best all around albums, not only by Mariah but ever.

Mariah Carey's #1's is as much a time capsule of '90s pop and R&B as a record of one woman's chart toppers: the disc chronicles a shift from the sweet, nearly '50s-style "Vision of Love" to more recent hip-hop-lite grooves featuring heavy input from Puffy Combs ("Honey"), Jermaine Dupri ("Sweetheart"), and O.D.B. ("Fantasy"). Some hit, some miss, but all feature the fluttery swoops that Carey substitutes for expression of feeling. Depth is beside the point, but few of these tracks are even fun. Still, after eight years, there seems to be no stopping her, and this album will hardly break her streak of successes. --Rickey WrightCustomer Reviews:
Mariah Medley.......2007-06-13
Sweetheart - good bounce to it, an airy tune
Honey - fun and lively, good groove
Fantasy - fun tune from mid-90s that makes the listener want to dance around. Good beat. Showcases Mariah's soprano
Dreamlover
Emotions - very good showcase of Mariah's vocal range and the power of her voice. Funky piano in there.
Someday - Mariah's first "big one" from 1990 I think. Great tune, infectious pop with a hard edge. Mariah's powerful voice with its big range was already on display in her early 20s.
Could be better.......2007-02-13
Before the style changed..........2006-10-13
The album shows how good she was...huge ground-breaking ballads like "Love Takes Time" and "Hero," makes-me-want-to-cut-a-rug dance tracks like "Emotions" and "Someday." Plus her specialty, fabulous mid-tempo gems like "Always Be My Baby" and "Dreamlover." And who could forget one of the most popular songs of all time, "One Sweet Day" with Boyz II Men. The single spent 16 freaking weeks at #1 on the Hot 100, more than any other song ever! Plus, this album shows how good she was when she just flirted with hip-hop, on the 2 great cuts "Fantasy" (although not this tacky version with ODB, but the original album version) and "Honey."
There are so many good songs missing that didn't make #1, so get "Greatest Hits" for those. In fact, just get "Greatest Hits" because it includes almost everything on here plus good stuff like "Can't Let Go" "Make It Happen" "Without You" "Anytime You Need a Friend" the aforementioned "Fantasy" original version and "Butterfly." I am disappointed because neither "#1s" or "Greatest Hits" has "Breakdown" with Bone-Thugz on it, one of my faves of Mariah's.
I wish Mariah would lose some of the "Hip" and gain back some of the "Pop" so she could make music as good as this again. This disc is as good as R&B/pop gets.

Early buzz on The Emancipation of Mimi predicted that this would be the disc to mark "the return of the voice"--the voice being that glass-shattering instrument that propelled Carey to bestselling female artist of all time status--and mostly it is. But because of the small army of talent involved in its assembly, the album is way more than just a comeback vehicle. For proof, try straight-ahead, look-out-Beyonce-Mimi's-still-got-it "Mine Again," or '70s-soul cuddle-up, "Circles:" a don't-attempt-on-American-Idol love song, or the gospel dazzlers "Fly Like a Bird," and "Stay the Night." But for songs that steer this disc directly into 2005, no looking back, scan the jewel case for the tracks followed by the word "featuring": "To the Floor," with Nelly, bumps along to maximum booty-shaking effect, while Twista spins his natural-disaster-force vocals into "One and Only." Snoop Dogg, Pharrell Williams, and Jermaine Dupri also pitch in; between them and the highwire vocals, Emancipation works the kind of pure-pop magic that sets us all free. --Tammy La GorceMore from Mariah

"Fantasy" provides the only real transcendent chapter on this album. Reinterpreting Tom Tom Club's "Genius of Love" with a percolating dance beat, the single emphasizes everything that makes Mariah Carey great. Her voice swoops, squeals, and careens over the seductive rhythm, while the words capture just the right amount of vulnerability and determination. Unfortunately, the thrill is short-lived, as the multiplatinum singer soon falls back into typical adult-contemporary schlock and pointless vocal gymnastics, particularly on "Melt Away" and the bombastic cover of Journey's "Open Arms." --Aidin VaziriCustomer Reviews:

Fantasy - Great, but I love the Bad Boy Mix of it better
Underneath The Stars - Love this song. It's like a stepper's cut/slow jam. Perfect song for those summer nights.
One Sweet Day - You gotta love the colaboration with Boyz 2 Men. It's a sad song, but I love it
Open Arms - The Journey cover. Love Mariah's version - it's more of an R&B ballad
Always Be My Baby - Love it, and always had.
I Am Free - It's okay. Not the best song on the album
When I Saw You - Great song! Another ballad with great lyrics
Long Ago - The hip-hop jam. It's a nice song
Melt Away - Love this song. Another great ballad - it's one of those rainy day songs
Forever - More like a doo-wop song. Great!!
Daydream Interlude (Fantasy Sweet Dub Mix) - Love it, even though it's a shorter version of the Fantasy Sweet Dub Mix. The full mix is 8 minutes long and way better than the edited version.
Looking In - Love the song. Anyone can relate to it - the final ballad from the CD.

Mariah's debut is OK but it suffers from something..........2007-04-29

What a debut!.......2007-01-20
While more in-depth reviews of her debut album can be found elsewhere here (and those folks can do a bit more justice to it than I could), I have to agree with the sentiment that she had an amazing voice and musical talent. The thing that really made me a fan (if only casual) was the fact that she wrote her own songs. Record company creation she was not, and that's a BIG plus in my book.
The album opens and closes with two classic 90s tunes - "Vision of Love" (which initially propelled Carey to the top of the pop charts) and "Love Takes Time," which I love the title to as too many love songs give impressions of instant, true blue love. The lyrics to her early material were poetic, sincere, and true to life.
Truth be told, I'm sorry that Mariah became complacent by using music samples, doing covers (where *some* are good, but the majority stink), and teaming up with rappers that did nothing for her musically. She never needed anyone to assist her in the singing department and I'm positive the well of strong, original material hasn't dried up.
Her debut disc is Mariah at her best. I was thoroughly amazed that she managed to release another disc chock-full of hits with "Emotions" just one year later in 1991. To see her have a nervous breakdown, star in a stinker of a movie ("Glitter"), and release an album that actually celebrates an alter-ego (so the story goes. Sounds like split personality syndrome to me) has been disappointing for someone like me who remembers the life Mariah helped breathe back into a music scene that really needed it in 1990.
Regardless, this is a pop music essential. - Donna Di Giacomo

Mariah Carey Enters The Music Scene With Her Debut Album: 3½-4 Stars.......2006-07-21
As Vision Of Love introduced the world to Mariah Carey, it was obvious that Miss Carey would be a force to reckon with. Her debut single is among my favorite Mariah Carey songs. The impressive pop ballad is a haunting and heartfelt offering. Especially, the part where Mariah repeats the lyrics, twice, is wonderful - it almost functions as a duet. This is Carey, when she is at her absolute best; vocally and musically. There's Got To Be A Way is a lovely up-tempo song about the problems of the world and how, as the title suggests, there has got to be a way to unite the human race, resolving the problems of the world. The catchy chorus is certainly the most memorable part of the song. Another favorite and no.1 single, I believe, is the sad I Don't Wanna Cry, which is an emotional ballad, showcasing Mariah's vocal range. The up-tempo Someday has an infectious beat with lyrics stating that someday a former boyfriend will regret leaving as he will come back, begging to be taken back. The version on the album is quite good; however, the version on Mariah's Unplugged EP album is to be preferred, in my opinion.
Vanishing is the power-ballad of the album. Overall, it is a display of Mariah's various vocal talents. The ''big'' vocals do tend to overshadow the song in general. However, Vanishing is simply impressive both vocally and production-wise. The haunting lyrics and Mariah's emotional voice are a perfect mix. All In Your Mind starts off slowly, soon picks up pace, culminating in the faster chorus. The song is a nice offering and Mariah's acrobatic vocals near the end of the song are impressive. Alone In love is a bland mid-tempo ballad and quite forgettable - except for the vocals of Miss Carey. You Found Me is a mixture between ''rock'' and pop. It is certainly inspired by a tougher sound. I, actually, like the chorus. Sent From Up Above is a tad corny, yet it is still an enjoyable song. Moving on, Prisoner is an up-tempo song with Mariah Carey's attempt at rapping - she does not do a very good job - yet you cannot help smile while Carey does her thing. Unlike others, I simply do not understand the appeal of Love Takes Times. Admittedly, it is a nice ballad but hardly no.1 material nor a Mariah Carey classic. Each to their own liking, I guess.
Mariah's self-titled debut is quite impressive, yet it is not without flaws. There is some of Mariah's best material on the album: Vision Of Love, I Don't Wanna Cry, Someday, Vanishing and All In My Mind. However, her debut album also contains lackluster material: Sent From Up Above, Alone In Love and Prisoner are mediocre material, which keeps the album from receiving a perfect 4. With that being said, the album is still a treat to listen to due to excellent vocals and fantastic pop songs.

Columbia Records rushed this compilation of patriotic and inspirational favorites into production in the wake of the September 11, 2001, attacks. The title song is a new version by Celine Dion similar to the performance she gave on the Tribute to Heroes telethon, while John Mellencamp's "Peaceful World" is included in an alternate, acoustic treatment. Each listener may find his or her own favorites, but few will be left unmoved by a selection that also includes Bruce Springsteen's "Land of Hope and Dreams," Simon & Garfunkel's "Bridge over Troubled Water," and renderings of "America the Beautiful," "This Land Is Your Land," and "Amazing Grace" by, respectively, Frank Sinatra, Pete Seeger, and Tramaine Hawkins. Bill Withers's "Lean on Me" closes the disc on a plainspoken note that perfectly encapsulates the spirit of rescuers and other Americans since the tragedies. A back-cover note promises that a "substantial portion of the proceeds received by Sony Music [Columbia's parent company] from sales of this album will be donated to the Twin Towers Fund." --Rickey WrightCustomer Reviews:

A Good Americana Compilation.......2003-10-27
This CD is a good compilation of songs that may lift the spirits of the nation, as well as some truly inspirational melodies. Performances by Tramaine Hawkins ("Amazing Grace"), Billy Gilman, Celine Dion, Simon&Garfunkel, Bill Withers are the gems of this CD. The same can be said about the National Anthem, though you might find some acappella version (by Lee Ann Rimes, for example) not less appealing.
Personally I bought this CD because of Lee Greenwood's "God Bless the USA". But this turned out to be the worst track. It is probably some remix. Almost nothing is left from the original version, neither its marching touch, nor the integrity that left your skin covered with goosebumps, inspired you and made you realise the true spirit of American patriotism. The version from this CD is more on the jazz, relaxed side, which is killing for such a song.
On the whole, this CD deserves your attention if you need a compilation of Americana music, or at least a flavour of it.
A great CD, powerful and moving.......2003-10-24
God Bless America is great for working, driving, or listening to all by itself. I guarantee that you will not regret purchasing this collection of American songs. This CD draws together an immense pool of talent and is extraordinarily successful at illustrating the greatest nation in the world.

I never realized fully how good this album is. It's her best since Daydream and Butterfly!!.......2007-05-31
But to get to the songs, it seems just like her Daydream album (which is my favorite from her): hit after hit after hit. The only songs I skip sometimes aren't even bad. It's just sometimes Mariah gets the yelling (Circles, Stay The Night) and I have to skip 'em.
If you don't have ANY of Mariah's albums (who wouldn't have at least one?) I would start with either this album or Daydream. If you do get this one, make sure it's the Platinum Edition because the extra songs are worth it. The only reason I could see someone getting the original Emancipation is for the beautiful cover which is superior to this one. But don't both look great?!
Some highlights are Shake It Off, Mine Again, One And Only, Your Girl, Fly Like A Bird and Don't Forget About Us.
I hope you enjoyed my review. Have a look at my others if you would like. ^_~

Linda Ronstadt was America's sweetheart of the '70s, because she was able to combine a pretty face, a pretty voice and a safe personality. Her songs might be full of big notes and high emotions, but they satisfied every predictable expectation of a love ballad or good-time rocker. Mariah Carey is America's sweetheart of the '90s for the exact same reasons. Music Box> topped the Billboard album charts, yielding number-one singles like "Dreamlover" and "Hero." The titles, one a hollow Minnie Riperton knock-off and the other a stiff Barbra Streisand imitation, are tip-offs to Carey's reliance on untethered fantasy (she's the fantasizer in the lyrics and the fantasy object in the videos). These songs, coªwritten and co-produced like most of the album by Walter Anasieff and Carey herself, are constructed to show off her dizzying soprano, not to provide an original approach to a well-worn subject. Even when she gets a strong ballad to sing, like her current singles--Babyface's "Never Forget You" or Badfinger/Nilsson's "Without You"--she overdoes the self-pity bit so much that the song loses its dramatic tension. --Geoffrey HimesAlbum Details

I still can't get enough of the rhythm of "Dreamlover," and "Anytime You Need A Friend" is right up there with Dionne Warwick's (et al) "That's What Friends Are For." The title track itself is a very pretty ballad.
This is Mariah Carey at the top of her game. She would do it one more time with "DayDream," but then sink into doing more covers and duets as the 90s went on (and I'll never figure out why because she sure didn't need help in the singing department!).
The CD is 42 minutes exactly, and it's time well spent. - Donna Di Giacomo

Emotions and her christmas album.
Vocally it wa majorlly impressive and it sounded great
there were no songs on here I didn't like.
Fluffy But Satisfying.......2006-08-15
However, this album shows decent effort. It's no masterpiece, but at least it showcases her voice well. Plus, she wisely brings in such formidable collaborators such as Babyface and the C+C Music Factory to improve her corny sound.
Dreamlover- 9/10- this is a good song. Some bizarre lyrics like "the kind of love that won't fly away", but at least it has a nice beat.
Hero- 8/10- not a big fan of this song. It's meaningful, but it seems like she's desperatly trying to suck up to her fans.
Anytime You Need a Friend- 10/10- nice gospel song.
Music Box- 8/10- I though it would be a up-tempo track, but it's yet another lame ballad.
Now That I KNow- 10/10- Great disco song. Like this one.
Never Forget You- 10/10- pretty good. Babyface is always reliable.

'Emotions' Runs High and Shows Mariah's Vocal Range To Great Effect.......2007-07-07
It shows Mariah was no fluke, displaying notes and pitch-perfect vocals that even today very few female singers can match. But not all the songs are keepers. I usually play only the first 5 songs and skip the last 5. My favorite is still 'Make It Happen'. The power and range Mariah displays on this track is remarkable. She pierces the heavens with her high notes and enormous lung power. I think Mariah really sings this song like she means it because she's writing the song from personal experience to not give up on her dreams of 'Making It'.
I think Tommy Mottola used 'Emotions' as a follow-up CD to spotlight Mariah's voice more so than the songs themselves. You can hear every part of Mariah's vocal range in the choice of songs on this CD. Obviously her upper range gets more of a workout on this CD than any other one in her entire Sony/Virgin/Island catalog. I think 'Emotions' was released as a vehicle to show her vocal chops and it succeeded in every way.
I wouldn't say the quality of songs is right up there compared with her debut CD or later ones (especially 'Daydreams'), but her vocal high register has never sounded better. Keep that tea kettle whistling, Mariah !
This hasn't aged at all.......2007-01-21
I bought a copy of her self-titled 1990 debut, but I never did get around to owning a copy of "Emotions" (something that's going to change very soon). I don't why because I remember "Emotions," "Can't Let Go" (which, as much as I roll my eyes over love songs, has one of the prettiest melodies I've ever heard with a love song), and "Make It Happen" getting constant radio airplay in 1991 - and I enjoyed those songs each and every time.
Her lyrics were poetic and struck a chord with the then-teenager me, and her sound, while pop, had strong soulful overtones. She helped continue breathing life into a stale music scene and that feeling still resonates with me a little over 15 years after its release.
It can't be said enough that "Emotions" is classic 90s, is a great addition to the CD collection, and is Mariah at the top of her game.
And, best of all, the album's sound doesn't sound aged. - Donna Di Giacomo
Mariah Carey Causes Emotions: 4-4½ stars.......2006-07-26
The title-track Emotions was released to audience as the lead single, providing listeners with a contagious pop beat. The song displays Mariah's high pitch notes and awesome background vocals which include Trez Lorenz and David Cole. And You Don't Remember is a superb ballad where Mariah's pleading voice belts out how her lover does not remember the love, they shared. The chorus is a delight to listen too - simply wonderful. My favourite song on the album is up next; the splendid Can't Let Go. It is no wonder that many consider it among Mariah's best ballads to date. Released as a single, the groovy Make It Happen got stuck at the no.2 position, I recall. However, the teasingly song is a wonderful treat. The overall message of the song: You should never give up, work hard and your dreams will come true in the end. If It's Over, a collaboration between Mariah and Carole King, has a taunt of a jazzy mood to it. Mariah Carey belts out the chorus powerfully. Once again, I prefer the Unplugged version - however, this is purely a matter of taste.
You're So Cold starts of with Mariah's praticing her vocal cords, functioning as a build-up to the actual song. The lyrics are a tad annoying, yet the song is still quite joyous. Albums tend to get weaker at the end, which is also the case with Emotions. To Be Around You, Till The End of Time and The Wind are likeable songs, however they do not hold up well against the rest of the album's excellent songs. The ballad-like So Blessed is another highlight of mine. The dreamy melody culminates with the more aggressive chorus especially the belting of the words ''You are my heart'' followed by the softer ''My everthing'''.
Emotions is one of Mariah Carey's best studio-albums, in my opinion. The combination of brilliant pop ballads and excellent up-tempo songs are clearly present on the album. If you are a big fan of Mariah's poppier songs or crafted pop songs in general, Emotions will surely be a safe bet. The only complaint I have with the album is that some of the material is a tad weak compared to the brilliant songs, which are to be found on Emotions; however, this is hardly abnormal. Emotions is a very solid effort and a better album than Mariah's debut.

and half of the songs 1998-present
Fantastic.......2006-02-18
Standouts in this album include:
"Emotions" - a good dancing track that features Mariah's piercing vocals.
"Can't Let go" - a beautiful ballad. One of Mariah's best songs
"Make it Happen" - A description of Mariah's life prior to becoming a superstar. Very catchy and uplifting
"The wind" - Very last track of the album. Mournful, breathtaking vocals combined with Mariah's sombre voice. Truly Phenomenal
Emotions is a truly magnificent album, featuring a wonderful collection of songs, each one a true delight to listen to.
