There are two of my favorite Streisand songs here. One is 'The Way we were' and the other is called the theme from 'A Star is Born' but I believe is also called 'Evergreen'. Listening to them and being moved by them I try to understand why I find Streisand to be such a uniquely moving singer.
One element is certainly the way she can play with her own voice. It really is like a kind of jazz instrument which she can turn in every which way. Its quality its timbre its power and above all its piercing melodic beauty can bring chills to the spine and tears to the eyes.
What a great gift, what a tremendously beautiful singer.

This album of Barbra Streisand, Greatest Hits, Volume 2 contains ten of her well known songs from 1970-1978. The title starts off with her timeless classic "Evergreen", from "A Star is Born", and ends with "Stoney End", from the album of the same title from 1971. There are some other great songs on this album as well. Here is a brief summary of the rest of them:
"Prisoner", which is from the movie "Eyes of Laura Mars" with Faye Dunaway. Barbra had declined to star in the film, but did agree to sing this song for it. GH, VOL. 2 is the only album of Barbra's that this song appears on.
"My Heart Belongs To Me", which is from her "Streisand Superman" title from 1977, is a great song.
"Songbird", which is from the album of the same title of '78, is another great song with a sad sound to it.
"You Don't Bring Me Flowers", is a great one, too, with Neil Diamond. Barbra and Neil both recorded their own versions of this song and, with the help of a professional DJ, had come up with this duet by splicing together their voices, making this another well loved song.
"The Way We Were", which is from the wonderful movie of the same name from 1973, is one of Barbra's most womderful contemporary songs. This version is from the solo album that was released in early '74, about the same time as the soundtrack album of the movie. The version on the soundtrack is very soft sounding, whereas this version has more of a contemporary sound to it.
"Sweet Inspiration/Where You Lead" is a great contemporary groove. This song was taken from her 1972 album Live Concert at the Forum. This is a fun one to hear, and Barbra sounds like she was having fun singing this song. The live concert that this song is from was done when George McGovern was running for President (Barbra did this show for him). Thousands of people came to hear the show, but sad to say, Nixon had won the re-election. But I digress; this song and the Live Concert album are a joy to listen to. Great to put a live song in a greatest hits album.
"All in Love Is Fair" is also from the studio album of her "Way We Were" record. This, too, is a great song.
"Superman", which is from her 1977 album of the same name is wonderful, and has a "comical" lyric to it.
"Stoney End", from her album of 1971, is the closing song on this album, and is more of a rock ballad. This is an album to get, whether you're just discovering Barbra's music or don't yet have this title. You will love it..

In November of 1978, Barbra Streisand released her twenty-fourth album entitled, BARBRA STREISAND'S GREATEST HITS VOLUME 2. This album features all of Barbra's greatest hits from 1971 to 1978, and only the best songs were chosen. Just look on below.

EVERGREEN
From the original motion picture & motion picture soundtrack A STAR IS BORN (1976). This is such a beautiful song that I can't help, but constantly listen to over and over again. This is one of the most beautiful songs Barbra has recorded since "The Way We Were"; well, it was the best since that song at that time in Barbra's career.

LOVE THEME FROM 'EYES OF LAURA MARS'
From the original motion picture "Eyes Of Laura Mars". Great.

MY HEART BELONGS TO ME
From the album STREISAND SUPERMAN (1977). Awesome song.

SONGBIRD

Every song on BARBRA STREISAND'S GREATEST HITS VOLUME 2 is just outstanding and it is worth all the money you are willing to pay for it. So, make sure you buy a copy of this album now before you lose that chance forever. I always tell myself that when I have the chance to do something, I should go for it because if I don't, I may never get that chance again. So, tell yourselves that when you are in consideration of buying this album or not.

For those enraptured with "Evergreen" and "The Way We Were", and who can't find the other Streisand best-of's, I would say go ahead and get this quickie collection, but don't let your Streisand shopping end here. "Superman" is a pretty but thin, head-scratching non-hit('My sweet life/has just begun/I'm in love this time and I know I have it/Fell into my life so I grabbed it/There's nothing I can do/When I'm with you'); I don't know what the song is about, or why a free-spirited, independent woman like Barbra needs a Superman to feel "easy"(must've been that Jon Peters influence). The live "Sweet Inspiration-Where You Lead" is overlong and spottily recorded. "Songbird" and "My Heart Belongs To Me"(a female-empowerment number)are both lovely but sorta bland. "Stoney End"-from 1970!-doesn't have the same smooth production and orchestration like the other songs and sticks out a bit. The strangest and rarest track here is "Prisoner"(from the inferior movie 'Eyes of Laura Mars'), a tepid Top 20 rock song that features a strong Streisand vocal but forgettable lyrics.

This compilation covered her career from 1970 to 1978. It went on to sell 5 million copies in the US alone. The one new song became a signature ballad for her, of course I'm referring to "You Don't Bring Me Flowers" with Neil Diamond. A classic AC ballad. 9 other hits fill up the collection. This was an interesting time in her career where she experimented with various styles (as always, as she still continues to do so). Other big hits include "Evergreen", "The Way We Were", "Superman", "My Heart Belongs To Me", "Stony End", and more. I give it 4 stars because the sound quality is not that great on this cd, so hopefully it gets remastered.

I have been looking all over for this cd and have just ordered a replacement. I haven't listened to this collection in a long time, but just reading the reviews on this board makes me long to hear it again. Quality music from a gifted songstress. A must for any collection!

This album, Barbra Streisand A Collection Greatest Hits...and More was released in October, 1989. I have this title on all three formats: LP, tape and CD. Every one of these songs is great to listen to. A majority of these songs were previously released on her earlier 80s album titles (except for two songs from the 70s, I should point out here), while two others were recorded specifically for this title's release. This album is not quite titled "Barbra Streisand's Greatest Hits, Volume 3", although this album's title sounds extremely close to that, and that some people would almost refer to this album as that. Her first Greatest Hits album, released in late '69 or early '70, profiled her best known songs from the 60s, her Greatest Hits, Volume 2 album, released in late '78, profiled her best known songs from the 70s, and this "Collection Greatest Hits...and More" title is a profile of her songs from the 80s (except for two songs which were done back in the 70s). This would also be considered, in my opinion in general, a mixed bag album of songs with different sounds. Most of these are easy listening, but one of them, "The Main Event/Fight", has an upbeat disco sound to it. Barbra's voice is as wonderful as ever on this album; not a bad note was sung by her on any one of these song titles. I can also assume that since this album first came out in October of 1989, it was (or may have been) the last title of Barbra's to be officially released on vinyl, as it was only a matter of time before records were discontinued to make way for tapes and CDs (I can take an assumed guess and think that records were discontinued about a year or a year and a half later after this title came out). So, get this album and let this wonderful voice of Barbra's pour out of your CD stereo's speakers. No Barbra Streisand music library should be complete without this album!! Get it while you can!!

In October of 1989, Barbra Streisand released her thirty-second album entitled, A COLLECTION: GREATEST HITS...AND MORE. This would be Barbra's fourth greatest hits compilation, featuring her hits from the last ten years, as well as three new songs. Another great compilation.

WOMAN IN LOVE

ALL I ASK OF YOU
From the album TILL I LOVED YOU (1988). Beautiful song to the best Broadway musical.

THE MAIN EVENT/FIGHT
From the original motion picture & motion picture soundtrack THE MAIN EVENT (1979). Barbra Streisand had the lead female role in this song's title film. I have never seen the film, but this song, which turned out to be the film's theme song, is just outstanding.

From the album THE BROADWAY ALBUM (1985). Beautiful. Just simply beautiful. That is the best way I could describe this song, which was the love theme to "West Side Story".

With the exception of "Guilty", this album is just amazing. A COLLECTION: GREATEST HITS...AND MORE should be standing in your collections right now. I know I've been saying this over and over, but I would not be saying it if the albums I've reviewed weren't great. This album is one of the greats and it should be put into your Barbra Streisand catalog.

This album is a profile of Barbra Streisand's hits from the 60s (either released in December, 1969 or January, 1970). You get a variety of hits of hers from that era~~the most well known "People" is on here, from the album of the same title from 1964, which is the opening song (this song was also in the movie Funny Girl, but this version on GH is different from the version on the Funny Girl soundtrack). Next, you get Second Hand Rose, taken from her My Name Is Barbra, Two album from 1965. After that comes Why Did I Choose You, taken from her My Name Is Barbra album from '65. He Touched Me, which comes from her second My Name Is Barbra album from '65 is also a good song. Free Again comes from her French titled 1966 album, Je m'appelle Barbra. This song is great. Then, revisiting the music of Funny Girl, you hear "Don't Rain On My Parade", which is another one of Barbra's most well-known songs. Then you get My Coloring Book, which I assume came from her The Second Barbra Streisand Album from 1963. Next, you get Sam, You Made the Pants Too Long, which makes its only appearance on this album. After that, you once again get another Funny Girl tune, My Man. This version came from her My Name is Barbra album from '65. Next is Gotta Move, which has an upbeat, "hurry up" sound to it. This song was from her Second Barbra Streisand Album from 1963. And, the final song on this album, Happy Days are Here Again, is a live song that was taken from her 1968 album, A Happening in Central Park. That Central Park concert was done in 1967 when she was still working on Funny Girl. The concert was done in front of thousands of people. On that concert album, Happy Days are Here Again is also the final song. Altogether, this Greatest Hits album is a must have for any person's Barbra Streisand music library. Not a bad song on here, and this title is worth getting. Definitely five stars for this album as well as the picture of Barbra on the front cover. She had a very sweet pose on this one and I like it, too.

Never had heard any of these songs. Not going to listen to them either. Managed to miss this inscrutable piece of Americana altogether.
Hey, if Kennedy had gotten us all blown up, then we wouldn't have had to listen to Barbra Streisand. Well, that's something. I guess.

I Think the 60s is Barbra's best decade, as we can see it now in
the newly released DVD package of 5 television specials.
Her 60s albums were great and original, and I think that two
people responsible for these are Peter Matz and Don Costa, her
best arrangers. I love the songs selected. "People" in my opinion was sung best in the 1964 " People" album, and it's the version
included here. Her "jewish" melody songs " My Man" and " Sam, you
made the Pants too long" are super , as well as " Second Hand
Rose" another "jewish" melody song in which Streisand shows how
proud she is of her heritage by ending the song with a comic
"nu?" a yiddish expression used when someone does something
excellent and asks another for for his opinion. I often wondered
if this "inside joke" was lost on the majority of listeners to this song.
The album is most enjoyable. All the songs are studio songs except
" Happy Days are here again" which I still wonder why she chose
to include a "live recording" in an album made up of studio
songs. In my opinion, the original " Happy Days are here Again"
in THE BARBRA STREISAND ALBUM is still the definite version of this song, and was such a Streisand original, that the inclusion
of a later "live performance" of this song ruins the perfect CD.
I solved this problem, by burning a CD and substituting the
Happy Days are here Again, with the original Studio version.
Now I don't get "nervous" when listening to this CD. because I
have "substituted " the "live" version of " Happy Days are here
Again" with the original.
Barbra, I have a right to be Happy.
