A document of the 1998 tour, Lilith Fair: A Celebration of Women in Music, Vol. 3 is thus far the most lively and affecting recording of Sarah McLachlan's summer festival. From the percussive chop-socky blues of Emmylou Harris's "Deeper Well" to Holly Cole's richly intoned "Onion Girl" to Sixpence None the Richer's quirky take on the pop hit "Kiss Me" to Rebekah's sparsely searing "Little Black Girl," the women presented here are fierce, fiery, and fabulously fruitful. Included also are Suzanne Vega's late-'80s signature song, "Luka," the Indigo Girls' banjo porch rocker "Get Out the Map," and N'dea Davenport's sultry-smooth "Underneath a Red Moon." While some notable '98 participants lack representation here (where are Paula Cole, Missy Elliot, and Lucinda Williams?), this volume is a proud achievement of fine production and optimal sequencing, and the performances are of greater diversity than offered previously. --Paige La Grone

4 out of 5 stars Lilith Ladies do not Dissapoint.......2005-07-21

While all of the songs on this record are outstanding and fun to hear live, Liz Phair's "Never Said" is a radio classic. Her first real recognition came from this song which helped make her an indie princess. An awesome buy.

5 out of 5 stars Better than the first!.......2001-01-13

I got this CD last night and have listened to it 6 times since, it is that good!!!! Luka is a depressingly excellent song, and Get Out The Map is cute and country-ish. It is so ecclectic and broad. My favorite songs are probably Luka, Get Out the Map, Naked Eye, and Never Said. If you are a fan of female music, buy this, you won't be dissapointed!

2 out of 5 stars Sixpence makes this CD none the richer.......2000-03-22

Holly and Sarah are great. Many of the artists are edgy and mature. But "Kiss Me" by Sixpence is an example of the sappy shallowness that this CD gets stuck in. Two stars is generous. Reissue this without the Sixpence track.

1 out of 5 stars McLachlan & Cole save this CD-, however, sonically it sucks.......1999-10-11

I demand some reasonable effort by producers to do a decent job of recording music, and ARISTA seems, in general, to be subpar on most of their releases. However, this seems to be worse than their average. While they can blame it on this being a live album -- it's a poor excuse. If you have any audiophile tendencies, don't buy this CD -- although the music is reasonably good, the shabby job of recording/transferring to CD format will leave you disappointed and wanting your money back.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous!.......1999-09-05

I was give Volume 2 and I thought it was good. I decided to go see how Volume 3 was. I loved it! In my opinion even better then the Volume 2! It has a wide variety of songs that all sound great. i loved Sarah's "Black and White". It's amazing!

Eric Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops have done it again. This is a spectacular collection. It makes you feel like getting dressed up with a lot of glitz and glam and going dancing. Though I must admit that Fredrica Von Stade's rendition of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" will definitely touch your heart.

N'dea Davenport started working on her debut solo recording in 1990; she finished eight years later. In between she spent six years traveling the world with British funk revivalists the Brand New Heavies. After four albums on which she sang lead, wrote songs, and produced, she took a hiatus to buy and restore a house in Louisiana, then resumed the solo project. N'dea Davenport was recorded in San Francisco, Atlanta, Nashville, and Los Angeles. It sounds less like a clever pastiche of an artist suffering from wanderlust than the travelogue of a woman who is fluent in many different languages. Her native tongue remains the saucy, '70s-inspired funk she honed with her former bandmates, and the sultry vibe of "Bring It On" and "Whatever You Want" pushes that sound forward. Elsewhere she's mixing it up with the Crescent City's Rebirth Brass Band on "Getaway," reviving the Southern torch tradition on "Save Your Love for Me," showing off her jazz chops on "In Wonder," and infusing Neil Young's "Old Man" with a heady dose of soul. Her lyrics range from social criticism to tender love themes, and her enthusiasm lifts every track. Her long-awaited debut makes an eloquent argument for broadening the narrow confines of contemporary R&B. --Martin Johnson

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars I finally listened to this properly.......2006-11-25

First, I was fully aware of N'dea's credentials when I bought this cd (at full retail) the day it came out in 1998. I'd been following N'dea since hearing an unbelievably soulful voice singing the virtues of "Cheeba" for Ton -Loc on his debut album. I sat straight up, went to the stereo and replayed the song at maximum volume while simultaneously checking the album notes to see who was singing my socks off. I had recently noticed N'dea's name on Madonna's "I'm Breathless" album, so I knew a major talent was bubbling under somewhere in the record biz and made a mental note to keep checking for that name. Not too much later I began to follow the advance buzz on the Brand New Heavies. Imagine my surprise when "Never Stop" hit the racks "featuring N'dea Davenport" (and by the way, check for the Def Mix Classic Mix of that one, it's just as good as the full-on Heavies version). At that moment if became easier to track two acts I was interested in...

When "the Heavies" came out with "Shelter" and no N'dea in sight, I was worried but hopeful. Of course the band will always rock no matter what, and Siedah Garrett helped them polish their style (can't forgive the sugar-coma of "You Are the Universe" however). I was really worried for N'Dea because she was taking a hell of a jump and facing incredible criticism if she were to fall short, with accusations of Diva Syndrome sure to follow.

By the time the album came out a year later, I had many personal issues going on, including the loss of a long term job and my own move to the UK. While I've nothing to apologize for (I did buy it after all...), I'm quite sorry that I didn't listen to it more closely. It was among my possessions when I returned to my brother's home after many years away, and these past two weeks it has been my personal soundtrack. I've been ripping my personal collection of hundreds of titles into a computer, and yet this one cd somehow stood out and demanded more attention (I can think of no higher form of praise at the moment).

While all the tracks shine with solid musicianship and THAT voice, the album really begins for me with "Never Again", leading into a nearly flawless suite of heartfelt and personal music that doesn't end until "Getaway" steps in to lighten the mood. The song "Placement for the Baby" is universal in theme and will resonate with anyone facing a challenge they've not found the heart or nerve for just yet. "Real Life" is tender and plaintive and thought-provoking. Even a cover of Neil Young's "Old Man" (which has never been a fave of mine) is rendered with unique style and given a fresh spin in the hands of a true pro. I echo the call of others to hear more of this incredible talent, and I'm glad she's back in the Heavies for a new album. This CD is a sleeper gem, you can't go wrong here.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2004-01-30

I've always been a Fan of Funk, like Tower of Power,Average White Band, and of course The Brand New Heavies, and Love N'dea Davenport with the BNH's.I was initally dissapointed when i first got D'Dea's album, i guess because it wasn't like the BNH sound. Then.......after listening to it again,it is an incrediable piece of work. The Music is good and her Voice is so Strong and Beautiful. Every song gives you something different!I highly recommend this CD. I look foward too a Second album from her and pray that she is doing it! It was the same as when i bought Phil Collins "Testify" It was dissapointing at first because it was not like his normal Horn Sound, but this album "Testify" is also a Masterpiece!

5 out of 5 stars True Talent!.......2003-11-25

Yet another underrated artist with a very powerful voice. N'dea's vocals are strong and the music is also great. Hopefully she gets the recognition she deserves.

4 out of 5 stars Just What I Expected!.......2003-04-07

I am a huge fan of the Brand New Heavies' fusion of R&B, funk, and soul. Being such a big fan, I was saddened when N'dea Davenport left the band to pursue her solo career. However, N'dea's debut self-titled album is filled with the music that made her and the Brand New Heavies famous and loved by many.

I would highly recommend this CD to fans of the BNH as well as people who have not listened to the band. This is a style of music that makes you feel good, and in these times of sadness and war in the world today, we need more albums like this!

5 out of 5 stars The True Heavy.......2003-02-26

This is a timeless classic from a much overlooked power voice in the industry. Sista Davenport belts out each and every song like nobody else can. I STILL play this classic and hold my breath awaiting another. I hope I don't have to wait too long. Don't YOU wait ... if you don't know, you'd better ask somebody!!!

"The blues is a chair . . . the first chair," John Lennon once said, struggling to find an analogy for the genre's elemental place in popular music's scheme of things. Emblematic of pain, struggle, oppression, and ultimately triumph, the history of the blues has all the dramatic elements of a great play. But a Broadway musical show? Well, why not? What are conventions for, if not restless tweaking and reinvention, as the blues itself has ably demonstrated over the decades? The producers have gratifyingly imparted the adventurous spirit of their quadruple-Tony nominated show (including Best Musical) to its cast album, bringing in a mini-pantheon of blues greats old and new (B.B. King, Buddy Guy, Jonny Lang) for guest star turns, as well as the gospel mastery of the legendary Andrae Crouch. Pushing the medium's envelope, they've also used the enhanced CD format to present a concise yet informative history of the blues in music, pictures, and words, the latter penned by show creator Ron Taylor and narrated by Taj Mahal and Whoopi Goldberg. Oh, that all history lessons were this well produced and lovingly imparted! --Jerry McCulley

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars but the blues is enough.......2000-10-01

i saw this show, with several members of the original broadway cast, in september, 2000 in grand rapids, mi. it was fantastic and much better than anticipated; it is a review in the style of "smokey joe's cafe" and may have a tie-in to that show. i liked this one better. one song followed another and the big photos shown as background gave a poignancy and sense of history to the whole thing. it started out with old african songs and chants and one song followed another for a good two hours and it should have ended with the rousing version of "good night irene." it ended with a bizarre song, billie holiday's strange fruit," and then a train of freedom type song, the low key, feel good "members only." the latter is on the album and comes off well.

my only criticism of the album echoes another, earlier one -- too many songs from the show are left off the cd. i would rather they put out a two or even three cd version and included more songs. it would be worth the money to get all the songs. the ones they picked are good, but they left off quite a few of the raunchier, blatantly sexual blues, such as the cutesy good girl/bad girl song and the crotch-grabbing king snake song, and the appalachian ones and the patsy kline tribute, which may not sound like the typical black blues, but they are tied in nicely, and gave them a way to get a white guy up there... I guess phenom johnny lang was originally on broadway in this and no one can touch him on blues guitar these days.

we bought the cd ... and when i played it i was struck by the great sound. it is from a live show, with clapping and comments and is crystal clear, both vocals and instrumental backup. again, "good night irene" rocks out and will get you going. my only picky criticism of the songs on the cd and in the show is that they should have put more oomph into "st. louis blues," and done it as a group ensemble, building to a more raucous finish, as on the louis armstrong plays w.c handy album. it is too restrained, but maybe that is how bessie smith originally did it. "fever" worked perfectly in a restrained, controlled, smolderingly sensuous delivery.

the voices all were strong and the heavy-set guy who was sort of the the leader of the ensemble stole the show. the guitar playing white guy in back was slick and great on "good night irene." the guy who wrote the show is a dead ringer for redd foxx, albeit with shoulder length hair and overalls, and the three female vocalists are foxes who will knock your socks off. everybody has a strong broadway, jazz or blues pedigree and there is not a weak voice in the show. the saxaphone and keyboards that come in occasionally help capture the bluesy mood.

i recommend you buy this album; it will be money well spent. if you are not a blues brother or sister, you will be one after you listen to this. it has it all -- old african; gospel; howlin' blues' chicago blues; and modern, glitzed up blues. contrary to one of the songs, the thrill is not gone... if you buy this album, it won't be gone for you either.

2 out of 5 stars Dissapointed.......2000-09-30

I had the pleasure of attending a performance of the touring company and loved every minute of it. Unfortunately the "original cast" recording does'nt (Live performance low audio quality) match the current casts performance level. A lot of the music is missing.

3 out of 5 stars Where's the rest?.......2000-06-05

After seeing the show, I was eager for the CD to come out, but many of the songs are missing and the gaps that creates is noticeable. The show is a history of blues and all the songs should have been included. What is there is fabulous, but too little for such a compilation of blues music.

5 out of 5 stars It shouldn't be anything but "It Ain't Nothin but The Blues".......2000-05-12

In one word, spectacular. Unfortunately, this musical never got the true attention it deserved during and after it's broadway run. Sickness of cast members and a highly-publicised snubbing by the Tony Awards have conspired to keep this most original musical from us, and thank the Gods of Blues in Heaven (Or Chicago, depending if Blues is your religion, and it just may be after listening to this CD) that the original cast recording, starring Ron Taylor and so many other Blues greats has come to CD. "It Ain't Nothin' But the Blues" traces the evolution of Blues music from Africa and Slavery days to the present day. I was fortunate enough (by what can only be interpreted as an act of fate) to see this show before it went to Broadway, at the Lyceum Theatre in San Diego, California, and even though I was skeptical at the beginning of the night, by the end of it, I was singing the blues!

I'll state that I am a person that people would least expect to like Blues music, and until I saw this musical, I had no real conscious desire to listen to any. This musocal made me an instant convert. It is so good that in just two hours I had discovered by soul and by the last song I was singing along with everyone else in the theatre.

I'd recommend this CD to anybody wanting to expand their musical palette, and it's a great introduction to blues music. Since you get to listen to it from the beginning of its roots you develop an understanding of the music that is better than just putting on a Blues CD from the present and pressing play.

Want more? How about B.B. King? Jonny Lang? Buddy Guy? The best part of it all is that the lead singer and co-creator of the musical is "Bleeding Gums Murphy" Himself, Ron Taylor.

Buy this now and let the good times roll!

4 out of 5 stars Not your typical Broadway musical.......2000-03-24

Before you buy this CD, I feel obligated to let you know that IT AIN'T NOTHIN' BUT THE BLUES isn't your average Broadway style musical. If you're looking for showstopping chorus numbers, you'd best stick to CABARET or JEKYLL & HYDE; this show had a grand total of 7 cast members. It's also not the typical boy-meets-girl narrative of so many shows, either. Instead, it's a history of the blues.

That being said, there is some GREAT music to be found on this disc. The songs go all the way back to African tribal chants, includes a sampling of the songs slaves sung in the fields, and gradually makes its way up to a form that is now recognized as the Blues. Some great talent is asked to help out on this record -- Taj Mahal, BB King, Jonny Lang, and others.

One final thing: do not just listen to this CD on your stereo system. It doubles as a CD-rom with a fascinating half-hour A/V presentation on the history of Blues, narrated by Whoopi Goldberg and Taj Mahal. IT AIN'T NOTHIN' BUT THE BLUES, while not synonymous with the great Broadway shows, is a musical history lesson of the highest regard.

This CD is great! Michael Davenport is an awesome bass clarinet player, and Kimberly is wonderful on the piano. It's really nice to have an entire CD of bass clarinet music, and I hope there'll be more from them in the future! =)

        5 out of 5 stars SUPERB COMPILATION.......2005-03-31

The 2 separate cds of "Southern Blues," Vols. 1 and 2 are very well made, well executed compilations. both have excellent liner notes. both are very good to excellent transfer to cd format, with little or no surface noise on either cd. and best of all, a very good bargain price from this UK distributor, which also puts out a large number of bargain compilations of US blues and jazz from before WW2. all in all, if you manage to find this cd, you will not be disappointed, which includes some hard to find songs as well. dave.

3 out of 5 stars Shut Up and Blow.......2007-02-13

I first saw Jeremy on Emeril Live! and was really impressed with his trumpet playing. Of course they don't show much of the musical guests on that show but it caused me to want to hear more. Sad to say, Jeremy has it in his head that he's a singer as well as a trumpet player. He's not. The voice is weak and slightly wobbly. Reminds me of Herb Alpert. His horn playing is MUCH better than his singing. I wish he'd come out with an all instrumental album. Till then, I'll pass.

5 out of 5 stars Mellow like his dad.......2003-05-10

He is soft and mellow. Great choice of songs for one album. Trumpet goes with his territory. Turn the lights down and have your sweety over for an evening in. Invite his dad in to play the trombone for you.

5 out of 5 stars Jeremy, Part Two.......1999-08-05

Jeremy Davenport's second outing confirms his vocal and instrumental talents and his good taste. It all adds up to a tasty collection you can enjoy over and over again from an artist who doesn't need to sell, as he already has the goods.

        5 out of 5 stars Crooning/trumpet jazz a la Chet Baker.......1998-12-09

Davenport is doubtless one of the greatest rising stars on the jazz scene

        5 out of 5 stars A great american singer / composer.......1998-09-11

I first listened to Davenport in New Orleans in 1997. At the first opportunity I had I bought his first CD, which I have listened for thousands of times since then. Now this second album only reenforces my impression that Jeremy is a legitimate successor of the great american singers and composer like Gershwin and Porter.
