A document of the 1998 tour, Lilith Fair: A Celebration of Women in Music, Vol. 3 is thus far the most lively and affecting recording of Sarah McLachlan's summer festival. From the percussive chop-socky blues of Emmylou Harris's "Deeper Well" to Holly Cole's richly intoned "Onion Girl" to Sixpence None the Richer's quirky take on the pop hit "Kiss Me" to Rebekah's sparsely searing "Little Black Girl," the women presented here are fierce, fiery, and fabulously fruitful. Included also are Suzanne Vega's late-'80s signature song, "Luka," the Indigo Girls' banjo porch rocker "Get Out the Map," and N'dea Davenport's sultry-smooth "Underneath a Red Moon." While some notable '98 participants lack representation here (where are Paula Cole, Missy Elliot, and Lucinda Williams?), this volume is a proud achievement of fine production and optimal sequencing, and the performances are of greater diversity than offered previously. --Paige La GroneCustomer Reviews:

N'dea Davenport started working on her debut solo recording in 1990; she finished eight years later. In between she spent six years traveling the world with British funk revivalists the Brand New Heavies. After four albums on which she sang lead, wrote songs, and produced, she took a hiatus to buy and restore a house in Louisiana, then resumed the solo project. N'dea Davenport was recorded in San Francisco, Atlanta, Nashville, and Los Angeles. It sounds less like a clever pastiche of an artist suffering from wanderlust than the travelogue of a woman who is fluent in many different languages. Her native tongue remains the saucy, '70s-inspired funk she honed with her former bandmates, and the sultry vibe of "Bring It On" and "Whatever You Want" pushes that sound forward. Elsewhere she's mixing it up with the Crescent City's Rebirth Brass Band on "Getaway," reviving the Southern torch tradition on "Save Your Love for Me," showing off her jazz chops on "In Wonder," and infusing Neil Young's "Old Man" with a heady dose of soul. Her lyrics range from social criticism to tender love themes, and her enthusiasm lifts every track. Her long-awaited debut makes an eloquent argument for broadening the narrow confines of contemporary R&B. --Martin JohnsonCustomer Reviews:
I finally listened to this properly.......2006-11-25
When "the Heavies" came out with "Shelter" and no N'dea in sight, I was worried but hopeful. Of course the band will always rock no matter what, and Siedah Garrett helped them polish their style (can't forgive the sugar-coma of "You Are the Universe" however). I was really worried for N'Dea because she was taking a hell of a jump and facing incredible criticism if she were to fall short, with accusations of Diva Syndrome sure to follow.
By the time the album came out a year later, I had many personal issues going on, including the loss of a long term job and my own move to the UK. While I've nothing to apologize for (I did buy it after all...), I'm quite sorry that I didn't listen to it more closely. It was among my possessions when I returned to my brother's home after many years away, and these past two weeks it has been my personal soundtrack. I've been ripping my personal collection of hundreds of titles into a computer, and yet this one cd somehow stood out and demanded more attention (I can think of no higher form of praise at the moment).
While all the tracks shine with solid musicianship and THAT voice, the album really begins for me with "Never Again", leading into a nearly flawless suite of heartfelt and personal music that doesn't end until "Getaway" steps in to lighten the mood. The song "Placement for the Baby" is universal in theme and will resonate with anyone facing a challenge they've not found the heart or nerve for just yet. "Real Life" is tender and plaintive and thought-provoking. Even a cover of Neil Young's "Old Man" (which has never been a fave of mine) is rendered with unique style and given a fresh spin in the hands of a true pro. I echo the call of others to hear more of this incredible talent, and I'm glad she's back in the Heavies for a new album. This CD is a sleeper gem, you can't go wrong here.

"The blues is a chair . . . the first chair," John Lennon once said, struggling to find an analogy for the genre's elemental place in popular music's scheme of things. Emblematic of pain, struggle, oppression, and ultimately triumph, the history of the blues has all the dramatic elements of a great play. But a Broadway musical show? Well, why not? What are conventions for, if not restless tweaking and reinvention, as the blues itself has ably demonstrated over the decades? The producers have gratifyingly imparted the adventurous spirit of their quadruple-Tony nominated show (including Best Musical) to its cast album, bringing in a mini-pantheon of blues greats old and new (B.B. King, Buddy Guy, Jonny Lang) for guest star turns, as well as the gospel mastery of the legendary Andrae Crouch. Pushing the medium's envelope, they've also used the enhanced CD format to present a concise yet informative history of the blues in music, pictures, and words, the latter penned by show creator Ron Taylor and narrated by Taj Mahal and Whoopi Goldberg. Oh, that all history lessons were this well produced and lovingly imparted! --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:
but the blues is enough.......2000-10-01
my only criticism of the album echoes another, earlier one -- too many songs from the show are left off the cd. i would rather they put out a two or even three cd version and included more songs. it would be worth the money to get all the songs. the ones they picked are good, but they left off quite a few of the raunchier, blatantly sexual blues, such as the cutesy good girl/bad girl song and the crotch-grabbing king snake song, and the appalachian ones and the patsy kline tribute, which may not sound like the typical black blues, but they are tied in nicely, and gave them a way to get a white guy up there... I guess phenom johnny lang was originally on broadway in this and no one can touch him on blues guitar these days.
we bought the cd ... and when i played it i was struck by the great sound. it is from a live show, with clapping and comments and is crystal clear, both vocals and instrumental backup. again, "good night irene" rocks out and will get you going. my only picky criticism of the songs on the cd and in the show is that they should have put more oomph into "st. louis blues," and done it as a group ensemble, building to a more raucous finish, as on the louis armstrong plays w.c handy album. it is too restrained, but maybe that is how bessie smith originally did it. "fever" worked perfectly in a restrained, controlled, smolderingly sensuous delivery.
the voices all were strong and the heavy-set guy who was sort of the the leader of the ensemble stole the show. the guitar playing white guy in back was slick and great on "good night irene." the guy who wrote the show is a dead ringer for redd foxx, albeit with shoulder length hair and overalls, and the three female vocalists are foxes who will knock your socks off. everybody has a strong broadway, jazz or blues pedigree and there is not a weak voice in the show. the saxaphone and keyboards that come in occasionally help capture the bluesy mood.
i recommend you buy this album; it will be money well spent. if you are not a blues brother or sister, you will be one after you listen to this. it has it all -- old african; gospel; howlin' blues' chicago blues; and modern, glitzed up blues. contrary to one of the songs, the thrill is not gone... if you buy this album, it won't be gone for you either.
Dissapointed.......2000-09-30
Where's the rest?.......2000-06-05
It shouldn't be anything but "It Ain't Nothin but The Blues".......2000-05-12
I'll state that I am a person that people would least expect to like Blues music, and until I saw this musical, I had no real conscious desire to listen to any. This musocal made me an instant convert. It is so good that in just two hours I had discovered by soul and by the last song I was singing along with everyone else in the theatre.
I'd recommend this CD to anybody wanting to expand their musical palette, and it's a great introduction to blues music. Since you get to listen to it from the beginning of its roots you develop an understanding of the music that is better than just putting on a Blues CD from the present and pressing play.
Want more? How about B.B. King? Jonny Lang? Buddy Guy? The best part of it all is that the lead singer and co-creator of the musical is "Bleeding Gums Murphy" Himself, Ron Taylor.
Buy this now and let the good times roll!
Not your typical Broadway musical.......2000-03-24
That being said, there is some GREAT music to be found on this disc. The songs go all the way back to African tribal chants, includes a sampling of the songs slaves sung in the fields, and gradually makes its way up to a form that is now recognized as the Blues. Some great talent is asked to help out on this record -- Taj Mahal, BB King, Jonny Lang, and others.
One final thing: do not just listen to this CD on your stereo system. It doubles as a CD-rom with a fascinating half-hour A/V presentation on the history of Blues, narrated by Whoopi Goldberg and Taj Mahal. IT AIN'T NOTHIN' BUT THE BLUES, while not synonymous with the great Broadway shows, is a musical history lesson of the highest regard.
