The excelent Milos Forman timepiece on the 20's based on the Doctorow novel has a marvelous musical translation in this soundtrack close to perfection. It gets the time and mood of the movie, and reflects its main dramatic moments. I would dare to say that this soundtrack is one of the finest coming out from a movie of the 80's. Besides, it sounds great in this digitally remastered version. Do not hesitate to get it. It's a real beauty.

Absolutely brilliant........2005-12-28

I first came across this soundtrack when looking for Donald O'Connor songs - I'm a big fan of his, and I'm trying to track down all the songs he's ever recorded. It just so happens he has one of the most delightful songs on this soundtrack, "I could love a Million Girls". Apparently it's from a Disney film called Summer Magic, but I don't think Disney would approve of how dirty this song is if you think about it! Donald O'Connor was around 55 or so when he recorded this song, so his voice isn't as great as it was once, but he still does a fantastic job.

Now, onto the other songs. "Ragtime" (the song listed on the soundtrack) is hauntingly beautiful - it really captures the feeling and mood of the time, and puts you right back there. Same with most of the other "score" tracks. This is definately one of the best scores out there, and it's a pity it didn't do better. I guess it's almost ahead of it's time a little, considering this was the time period that gave us films like The Blues Brothers and other such early SNL comedies which didn't require scores like Ragtime needed. It really should've done better, but for now enjoy the soundtrack because I doubt you'll get another release of it!

I ordered this CD for my three year old son after seeing how much he loved the I Love Toy Trains DVD's. I Love Toy Trains DVD Parts (1-3) He was so excited when I gave it to him, and he wanted to listen to it right away. He loves to listen to it when we are in the car. Track number one has a great train bell sound effect that he loves, and "Choo Choo Blues" is one that he loves to sing along to. I plan to look into more James Coffey music for my son.

I bought this CD to play as background music at my son's train themed birthday party. All of the kids loved the music and we had a wide age range. I highly recommend this CD for kids whether they have a love of trains or not. Very fun car riding tunes!

Turn up the volume!.......2000-11-14

I have two kids (a boy and a girl ages 3 1/2 and 2) who love this music. My son tells me to stop talking and turn up the volume when we listen. They love to get their instruments out and play along. James Coffey writes the music for a train video series produced by Tom McComas (....) that parents will want to check out. My kids prefer these videos over the Thomas series and I think the music is the reason.

My kids got this as a gift from friends in the U.S. and it is a hit both at home and amongst my kids' friends who keep borrowing it (much to my kids' dismay since they listen to it almost non-stop). The English speakers love the lyrics and the non-English speakers love the music! It is a favorite in our house...we love it all!

Both of my children (boy 4 1/2, girl 1 1/2) love this music about trains - especially the dinosaur song. The CD has stood the test of time at our house. We first borrowed it from the library, and my son was constantly asking to get it again. After several renewals, I finally broke down and bought it. There is also a video called "I Love Toy Trains, Part 4" which is set to this entire collection. Both have been big hits at our house for over a year.

This concept album ranks with the most thematically ambitious of Johnny Cash's career, though the title's a little misleading. Instead of a collection of train songs (the sort featured in the Cash catalogue from "Hey Porter" to "Orange Blossom Special"), he alternates the spoken-word narrative of a rail trip that crosses the country (and cuts across centuries) with songs about the characters you might meet along the way. From a Kentucky coal miner ("Loading Coal") to an Oregon logger ("Lumberjack") to a convict on a Mississippi chain gang ("Going to Memphis"), Cash inhabits the various manifestations of what he calls "the heart and muscle of this land." In "Slow Rider" he combines the folk standard "I Ride an Old Paint" with the gunfighter legend of John Wesley Hardin. I was glad to get a copy of this as a present for a friend in Europe who is a serious Johnny Cash fan. My cousin tells me that there is a 4 CD set with the same name. But since i was only expecting one CD i wasn't disappointed!

Ride This Train, Johnny Cash.......2007-03-11

I was SO pleased to be able to find this album! In my opinion, this is one of the finest albums Johnny Cash ever recorded. I'm sure it is the only place he ever recorded the song "Old Doc Brown", which never fails to touch my heart. All of my children (now grown with children of their own) remember this album (as an old LP) and were just as pleased with it as I was! Thank you SO MUCH for providing a place to find treasured memories!

A classic, one of Cash's best LP's.......2005-11-27

Although it may intially be hard to get into Cash's concept albums (although they contain many of his best recordings imho), this is a good place to start. A train ride through the days of old, is fascinating through the writing, but even better the voice of Johnny Cash. Every song here is strong, and I rank the first 5 songs up there with anything he ever recorded. Johnny's voice never sounded so good and is best vocal performance along with American Recordings no 1.

Johnny Cash fans, Get on board!.......2004-06-17

As with several other albums/cd's I've bought, I didn't like this at first. After repeated listenings, I'm a true believer. This is a concept album in the truest sense of the word - between tracks you hear Johnny talking about America, along with the sounds of a steam locomotive - it's as though Johnny is travelling cross country and telling stories of various Americans including slaves, slave-owners, outlaws, Cajuns, lumberjacks, miners etc. This cd could be used by history teachers - it's that interesting. My favorite track is Dorraine of Ponchartrain - it's a real tear jerker along the lines of a 19th century Ebony Eyes (Everly Brothers). Goin to Memphis is also really cool - reminds me of John Fogarty's "Workin on a building". All four bonus tracks are excellent - Willie Brown is a feminist's delight - the "player" dies of a broken heart. The Ballad of the Harpweaver isn't really a song, it's a narration along with an ethereal sounding reverb on the electric guitar - it's an other-worldly psychic tale - genuinely weird and interesting. Smiling Bill McCall is hilarious - a Nashville radio star idolized by all the kids who attempts suicide because he hates his theme song and turns out to be 4 feet tall and bald. If a Cash fan loves "Boy named Sue" - he/she will positively love Smiling Bill McCall. I think the 1959-1963 period was among Johnny's finest years of output. I love this CD so much, it's a narcotic to me - I have trouble removing it from my cd player. I recommend it as highly as possible.

This is an absolute must!!! I have never heard such passionate singing of spirituals from non-black choirs. Perhaps that is attributed to Shaw's minister roots. As usual, the sonority of Shaw's singers is second to none. This is a fun CD that all can enjoy...not just the choral buffs who know just how good Shaw and his choirs are!!!

Not Up to Shaw's Usual Standard.......2002-03-23

Maybe just personal taste. I don't find the arrangements and vocalizing as interesting and satisfying as "Sea Chanties" and "23 Glee Club Favorites", the latter setting a standard never equaled.

A Must CD for Choral Music Lovers.......2001-01-03

Amazing Grace is a very appropriate title for this recording. For those of you who love Sacred Harp , Southern Harmony and Spirituals, you will revel in the folk traditions of this album. Parker and Shaw arrangements, and sometimes just one or the other are so well done. The singers, of course, do an excellent job of making music under Shaw's direction. "Hark I Hear.." arr. by Parker is becoming a standard for choruses and this album will help you hear why. "If I've got my ticket" by Shaw is a wonderful exchange between solo and chorus. You will be playing this CD over and over once you hear it.

I must add, to the praises above, that Kathleen Battle's "Lord, How Come Me Here" is the best "quick" explanation of the long-lasting effects of slavery that I can think of. The line, "They sold my children away," says it all.

And the VERY funny "Scandelize My Name" is also worth the price of the total album!

Clearly you are mistaken. I don't know who that guy is-the person below recommended-but there is NO COMPARISON to JESSYE NORMAN AND KATHLEEN BATTLE!!!! Jessye Norman herself has *30* HONARY DOCTRATES from places like Harvard, Juliard, Yale, Cambridge....I mean HELLO!!!! That guy had no where near the ease, the musicality or even the breath support as these two veterans show!! It is a beautiful CD though it came out in 1991 and I HIGHLY recommend it.

Broadway takes on the spiritual ..........2004-01-29

I'm going to be the dissenting voice here: thank goodness I signed this disk out of the public library 'cause I'm sure not going to listen to it twice.

There is nothing wrong with the performances. Jessye Norman and Kathleen Battle sing beautifully, and there's no problem with the pick-up orchestra under James Levine.

The problem, and it's huge, is the conception of the show and the musical arrangements. To make the video marketable, I suppose, the producers decided that the concert had to be big: big names, big arrangements, big effects. So we have eighteen spirituals given the musical theatre treatment, with a philharmonic chorus providing chain-gang sound effects, big brass, and big percussion -- including a chinese gong. A chinese gong in a spiritual??? Spare me! Almost every track turns out sounding like either a curtain-raiser or a big, end-of-act production number with cute and predictable modulations between some of the stanzas and the sort of curly-cue orchestral ornamentation typical of Broadway shows.

And you know what? It all kills the spirituals stone dead. The spiritual is one of those musical forms where less is more and very little is best of all. That's how they started, after all. That's how and why they worked for their original audiences, and that's why they were powerful enough to make the transition from folk song to art song. If you want to hear Battle sing spirituals that are irresistible, listen to the set on her Salzburg recital CD, also with Levine (ASIN B00000E31B). There, the music speaks for itself and speaks with a strength and a beauty that the tracks on this disk never approach.

For Fans of the Film, or Sakamoto, a Worthwhile Purchase.......2006-11-13

As with most soundtrack albums, you'll buy it because you really liked the film and want an aural souvenir of it. "The Sheltering Sky" certainly works in that regard. It even has the Lionel Hampton number used over the opening credits. Unfortunately, the tracks are not sequential, which lessens the souvenir value a bit, but it's still a good buy for lovers of the film or for fans of Ryuichi Sakamoto's music.

This is a timeless, haunting soundtrack. One of Sakamoto's best, and thanks to a supporting cast of great music - this is truly a soundscape best heard in totality. Any fans of Sakamoto's work or even those who love movie soundtracks - you absolutely have to get this. Penetrating and atmospheric.

Stunning Sky.......2004-10-25

The Sheltering Sky is one of my favorite scores. The film itself is flawed but fascinating, and its score is one of its highlights. The Sheltering Sky Theme is so moving and haunting that it ranks up there with "Once Upon A Time In America" and "The Mission" as a brilliant theme music.

This soundtrack is hard to find but worth seeking if you love score music.

this Bertolucci movie was really beautiful and so is the soundtrack. It is simply brilliant & in my opinion Sakamoto's very best! A mixture of ancient sounds, slow strings, islamic chants and heartbreaking melodies, just BEAUTIFUL !

The Best Gospel Album by a Classical Singer!.......2005-11-07

I am SO happy that this has finally been re-released onto CD! I have known this album for the last 10 years, as a friend of ours gave us a copy, first on cassette tape, which we wore out, and then on CD. I have played it for just about anyone who will sit still long enough to listen, and I count it among my favorite recordings of all time! I have other classical gospel recordings by some of Ms. Quivar's colleagues, and while I also enjoy them, they simply are not in the same league as this recording!

Florence Quivar is, quite simply, perfect in this recording. She has the perfect mix of classical and traditional gospel technique, and performs every song on this album with an astonishing range of colors, ability and with so much feeling that I am moved every time I listen. I am a classical singer myself, and this album is a true inspiration to me. It is a document of what singing really can be about, a magical fusion of sound, word, emotion and soul! I can recommend this for both the classical and the gospel enthusiast, but know many people, who really are neither, who just recognize and respond to the powerful, emotional, fantastic singing in this album!

Robert Shaw is still considered on of the finest choral conductors this country has ever produced. When he took over the podium of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra some felt his talents were being wasted on orchestral influence: a few seasons into the role as an orchestral conductor erased the doubts of his ability in that realm. One of the aspects of his tenure programming was always to include the major works for orchestra and chorus and fortunately most of those works were recorded before his death.

In this superb CD Robert Shaw returns to his roots as choral conductor, presenting a group of a cappella works that demonstrates just how wide-ranging was his repertoire and a renewed appreciation for this gifts in drawing the very finest of choral singing from his musicians. Included here are near perfect performances of a wide variety of works: de Victoria's 'O vos omnes, qui transitis per viam', Thomas Tallis' 'A new commandment', Poulenc's 'Quatre motets pour un temps de pénitence' and 'Quatre motets pour le temps de Noël', Debussy's 'Chansons de Charles d'Orléans', Brahms' 'Waldesnacht' and 'Abendständchen', Aleksandr Kopylov's 'Heavenly Light', excerpts form the Rachmaninov 'Vespers', Verdi's 'Sacred Pieces', Britten's 'Hymn to St. Cecilia', Arvo Part's 'Magnificat', Frank Martin's 'Mass', and three spirituals.

Some may argue this is too wide a selection for a CD, that while this made make for a brilliant evening's performance in the concert hall, it is too much variation to digest on a CD format. But those who feel that way can parcel out the treasures here recorded according to their needs. For a sampling of the genius of Robert Shaw conducting a cappella works, this CD is as fine as they come. Highly Recommended. Grady Harp, July 06
