Product Description
In a sense, he must have known that going to a remarkable place like Haiti would transform him. But Jacob Moon was, in another sense, wholly unprepared for the onslaught of new sights, sounds and emotions that would wash over him during his short time on that island. The rampant poverty, the ravaged landscape and the heartbreaking beauty of the Haitian people left an indelible mark on him. Flying home from that experience, all of the themes he had been writing about (our poverty in spirit, the myth of independence, our need to reach out to a world in need) came into focus, finally.

It was there on the plane that he wrote "The World I Left Behind", the title track of his latest record, and its emotional centerpiece. Many of the songs pick up this theme on this latest collection, Jacob's third and best CD to date. "Chelseaville" is about leaving the pastoral world of the smalltown behind for the bright lights of the big city. "Siren Song" features a character overcome with a struggle with lust and obsession, wondering if he can ever "hear that siren song and walk away". The yearning in "There's a Place" for another world in which two souls can finally meet is almost palpable, and 'The World I Left Behind' takes on yet another meaning in "One Tragedy Away"; a song about the fact that we in the western world have largely abandoned the mantle of responsibility to use our wealth for healing and restoration.

"The World I Left Behind" is clearly Moon's strongest effort, combining sonic clarity with detailed arrangements and strong performances. The music on this gripping new CD is as varied as Jacob Moon's influences which include Peter Gabriel, James Taylor, Ron Sexsmith, Todd Rundgren, Steely Dan, Lucinda Williams and Bill Frisell. Jacob credits his band's versatility for bringing off the style changes convincingly, while maintaining a common thread that ties the record together. This is no easy task, as the songs go from gospel-tinged ballad(track 2) to alt-country(track 7) to world beat epic(track 4) and right back down to one guy and his guitar (tracks 5 and 10). Guests include Kim Deschamps (of Blue Rodeo fame)on lap steel and Les Cooper, whose 'Coopertronics' guitar loop on 'One Tragedy Away'.

The World I Left Behind

The World I Left Behind,Jacob Moon,Jacob Moon,"Jacob Moon is the best surprise I've had in a long time...a powerful, distinctive work by a young Canadian guitarist who blends bittersweet vocals, acoustic and electric guitar, and jazzy piano for an effect that is both sincere and sophisticated."

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Sheer beauty from Agnes Baltsa.......2005-06-23

This disc from Agnes Baltsa (Greek opera-singer) containing the most beautiful Greek songs is a real treat. It's recorded in the -80s when she was around 40 and in her prime. The songs are written by famous Greek composers like Theodorakis, Hadjidakis and Tsitsanis. My only complaint is that the cd only contains 11 songs. I wish it had at least 11 more.... But fortunately, my cd-player has a "repeat-button".......(Which I might add, is soon worn-out..)

For people unfamiliar with either Greek music or opera, this is the place to start. To me it seems that Greek music often is a matter of strong likes/dislikes, as is opera. You either love it or you hate it. After listening to this disc you will definitely want to seek out more recordings of Greek music and/or opera-recordings featuring Agnes Baltsa.

I know and love Agnes Baltsa from the opera stage, but even so, this record still amazes me. You will not hear her belt out painfully high notes like an opera-star on this cd - just beautiful singing throughout the whole disc. She also has a clear phrasing which I think is great, because it enables me to understand what the songs are all about. Being a classically trained singer one should perhaps think her voice unsuitable for simple-styled Greek folk songs. You couldn't be more wrong. Her crystal clear voice lends an elegancy to the songs that has to be heard to be believed. I'm a long time fan of Greek music and own a lot of recordings from various Greek artists, but never have I heard these songs so beautifully sung. This is definitely my "desert-island-recording" of Greek songs. I never tire of hearing them played again and again and again....

My favourite tracks from the disc have to be "Oniro pedion tis gitonias", "to treno fevgi stis okto", "O tahidromos" and "Arhontissa" and not to mention "Varkarolla". Her voice is just so hauntingly beautiful in these tracks. Don't be surprised if you end up in tears. But really, all the tracks are real treasures, gift-wrapped in Baltsa's velvet voice. It's a treat to hear Baltsa sing in her native tongue for the first time. It's obvious that she feels perfectly at ease here. She captures the melancholic beauty of the Greek soul so wonderfully. To me it's a mystery why she hasn't recorded more of this sort (at least I haven't been able to find any...)

The Athens Experimental Orchestra which is playing on this disc also deserves some words of praise. They make the Greek instruments sound heavenly and in the instrumental parts of the songs you just want to get up and dance.

This disc is really a proof of Greek supremacy - the music, the lyrics and Agnes Baltsa's singing - so simple and yet so powerful and breathtakingly beautiful. What more can I say? Just buy the cd ASAP!

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Collection.......2004-12-10

This album was first released by Deutsche Grammophon (DG) in 1986 under the title "Agnes Baltsa, Songs My Country Taught Me." I have owned it and enjoyed it for probably 15 years. It's a wonderful collection of very melodious Greek folk songs with fine arrangements sung by one of the great mezzo sopranos of our time. It's great that DG has seen fit to re-release it so many of you can also enjoy it. Buy it; you won't regret it.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great set of wartime rarities.......2003-05-14

Spike Jones was the king of the novelty song performers, with hits like "Der Fuehrer's Face" and the parody version of "Sheik of Araby" becoming huge hits during World War II. This is a swell 3-CD set, gathering a full eighty-one of Jones' best tracks from his 1940s heyday, drawn from an extensive archive of radio broadcasts made for the Standard Transcription service. The tightness of his City Slickers band is amply demonstrated in these manic, kookily orchestrated performances. Toots, squonks, blatts and bleats whiz by at lightning speed, as one daffy song after another will delight devoted fans. Amazingly, Jones had the unusual, almost unique ability to perform a repertoire almost entirely made up of comedic material, and yet still be quite listenable and engaging. His jazz chops were hardly in question, and from time to time Jones would dash off a non-novelty ballad or two, just to give the rubes something to think about. Of course, just as often he would perform a song that *sounded* like a straight ballad, but would turn out to be another goof. (One great example of this is the sultry "Serenade To A Jerk," sung in slinky, burlesque tones by Myrtle Horwin.) This collection may seem a little overwhelming, but like his studio recordings, these radio performances have a certain brilliance and joie de vivre about them that will leave you enchanted. Definitely worth checking out!

This collection has remastered material from the large stack of Standard Transcription discs from the early 1940's. There are many songs not recorded on RCA, many on the theme of wartime ("48 Reasons Why"), and the quality is excellent. The packaging is threadbare but this is an essential CD package for true music lovers.

5 out of 5 stars Moving traditional music.......2004-02-05

Music of the period performed in the style of the period and with great feeling. Don't be afraid that the music is "stuffy" or academic. It is funny, sad, and rousing. It gives the feeling of immediacy that never goes out of style.

5 out of 5 stars Splendid program, beautifully done!.......2002-06-01

A splendid program of varied, contrasting pieces for voice and
instruments. All performers are complete masters of this music
and its idiomatic performance style, and they execute it with skill, wit and (where appropriate) real depth of feeling.

This is an album which everyone who loves Civil War music,
or who is meeting it here for the first time, will cherish.

5 out of 5 stars Attention Hardcore Reenactors.......2000-09-14

I am a campaign-style Union reenactor in the Eastern US who has emphasized Civil War-era music in my knowledge base. I was also a musician for several years. DC Hall's New Concert ensemble has done a first-rate job of recreating our Northern ancestors' music. From my reading, their efforts have approximated the small, live music groups that were popular before and during the War. The liner notes are well-written, and historically accurate. Perfect for background music when having your pards over to count threads or make up rounds. I recommend it without hesitation.

5 out of 5 stars This is always going to be one of my favorites!.......1999-05-08

D.C. Hall's NC&QB is a wonderful small ensemble that really adds new light to the Civil War genre. At times, it is so tender in feeling (The Picture on the Wall)and then rowdy in spirit (The Year of Jubilo). The familiar Star Spangled Banner is done in a wonderful unique rythme. Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great for home and classroom.......1999-03-21

No other composer so closely kept his fingers on the pulse of American thinking and gave the country so much of what it thought it wanted. "Yiddle on Your Fiddle" tells us more of the second-generation immigrants' desire to become Americanized than all the history and sociology books can ever do. So it is a double pleasure to announce the appearance of "Come on and Hear!: Early Songs by Irving Berlin, 1909-1915" and "Keep on Smiling: Songs by Irving Berlin, 1915-1918," two fantastic CDs or tapes on Oaktown label and released through a friendly little Connecticut company calling itself Original Cast Records. Between the two sets, you have 41 tracks of the Berlin output from "Everybody's Doing It Now" to "We're on Our Way to France." The soloist is Benjamin Sears, who with pianist Bradford Conner has something of a reputation around the Boston area. Now some of this material is duplicated by the more widely known Joan Morrison on two RCA Victor releases, possibly out of print by now; and like those discs could use another voice now and then. (Conner does join in where a duet is called for, but my point remains.) Sears is a capable if not an outstanding baritone, who does justice to these historic expressions of Americana. So not only do I recommend both of these sets for their enjoyment value, but I wish to continue to point out to Social Studies teachers how valuable sets like this would be to classes who have no concept of how people really felt (as opposed to what they merely said and did) "way back when." And I might even stick out my neck so far as to offer to come to any school (in reasonable distance of where I live) to give a sample lesson on how these sets can be used.

As soon as the laser hits the CD and the sound begins to stream out the speakers, you're already comfortable. Jacob Moon's voice is natural and honest, folky and earthy yet still upbeat and contempoary. Something ony a few artists have achieved. It's comfy like James Taylor but edgy like Steely Dan. The songs are well crafted, the musicians are excellent.

Eventide is a gently rollicking, sublime and organic-sounding record, the kind that's evokes an evening drive in the country, just as the sun is going down over rolling hills. With his warm voice and lyrical acoustic guitar at front-and-centre, Moon leads a band of supportive musicians through 10 songs that hang together like a tapestry of Moon's influences. There's all the elements of Moon's trademark sound: the gospel-tinged groove of "Just Like You", featuring members of his Soul Gospel Experience; the Lightfoot-style folk poetry of "Magnolia", the longing and melancholy of ballads like "Tell Me Why", and his connaisseur's choice of covers by Peter Gabriel, Bob Dylan and Emmylou Harris.
