This 1964 studio session features the Peterson trio with bassist Ray Brown and Ed Thigpen, a group that had been together for five years by then and performed like a well-oiled machine. The repertoire is mostly pop songs of the day, including bossa nova tunes and film themes, and the treatments are fairly brief, with emphasis placed squarely on the melodies. Even in their lightest moments, though, the group demonstrates some of the qualities that made it among the most influential piano trios in jazz, a group that could generate tremendous rhythmic energy and a sense of developing musical detail. For all his legendary force, Peterson possesses a subtle rhythmic sense, and here he infuses even "People" with an undercurrent of swing. This is undemanding, tuneful music best suited for casual listening, but it still sparkles with the trio's customary élan. --Stuart Broomer

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Polite Peterson; Excellent Sound.......2007-06-17

This 1964 session tends toward the "commercial" Oscar Peterson. Ten tunes, only one clocking in at over 5 minutes (5:11), with Oscar playing with restraint, finesse and polish, backed by his best rhythm section. The "concept" was to have the great pianist perform tunes not normally in his repertory but frequently requested by fans. At the same time, none of the last three tunes is familiar, though the closer features full-blown hyper-virtuosic Oscar at full speed.

The audio on the 1997 CD reissue is as good as it gets. Ray Brown's bass retains all of its natural, personal character; Thigpen's drums are crisp and present; Oscar's piano is bright and perfectly mixed--and it's a spacious sound that you would never hear on a Van Gelder recording.

If you really want to hear Oscar smokin' on every tune, playing with his "serious" game face on and from this same period, go to the recordings from the "Exclusively for My Friends" series, made at the Black Forest estate of Hans Brunner Schwer for his German MPS label (now out on Verve). Start with "The Lost Tapes" (Vol. 1) or "In a Mellotone" (Vol. V), but fasten your seat belt first. No mellow Oscar on this one--just a volcanic force unleashed. If that sounds like too much to start with, get your feet wet with "We Get Requests."

5 out of 5 stars Oscar at his best.......2006-12-03

This has got to be my favorite Oscar Peterson CD! The trio (Ray Brown, Ed Thigpen and Oscar) is at the height of their musical prowess and every track is a gem. There's been so much written about Oscar that I have nothing to add but he really knows how to make Jazz improvisation make sense. There isn't the least bit of self-indulgence or pretense on this CD, every track has just the number of choruses to make their musical point(s) and then they stop. So even if you're not a big fan of jazz you're going to enjoy this CD. I especially enjoy Track 6 - "You Look Good to Me", Ray Brown's bass solo at the start is wonderful and Oscar builds the energy as the tune progresses. I have probably listened to this CD a couple of hundred times and never grow tired of it.

5 out of 5 stars Five-star cocktail party music.......2005-05-05

There is no point in criticizing an album for being what it is not, apparently, intended to be. When Oscar Peterson and his bandmates did their take on West Side Story, it was serious work. Part of it I liked, part of it I didn't, but at least he was thinking about how to put those songs in a dramatically new light.

We Get Requests, on the other hand, is mostly well-executed fluff. I can picture sixties exectives and their wives together in their penthouse apartments, putting on this album -- to show their exquisite taste, of course -- and ordering Jeeves to bring another round of martinis. Of course, they wouldn't really be listening to the music -- it would be a pleasant tinkling in the background, an element of the carefully planned atmosphere.

Part of Oscar Peterson's problem was that he had such a command of technique that his improvising was often annoyingly glib -- though very sprightly and superficially fun. It sounds as if he let his fingers do the walking, but I don't think he made much effort here to work into the guts of these songs.

From my exposure to a half dozen Oscar Peterson albums, I conclude that he was usually best as a backup player for other soloists, when he had to listen hard and work around what the main voice was playing or singing -- with healthy doses of subdued chording and quiet support for the band as a whole. This imposed on him a restraint and discipline that he found hard to apply when he was the main soloist. As examples I would cite his Very Tall album with Milt Jackson or his work on Fred Astaire's The Astaire Story sessions.

On We Get Requests, the trio weaves its happy way through several of the big hit songs of that era (People, Days of Wine and Roses), completely misses the bossa nova groove on two Jobim tunes (Corcovado, Girl from Ipanema), and generally seems to be having a grand time -- we're told in the liner notes that most Oscar Peterson sessions were pleasant affairs, with jokes and smiles all around. The result was the highest-class elevator music ever recorded. Not that there's anything wrong with that. It all depends on what you're looking for, and what mood you are in. Five stars!

I was looking for DAVID BLAIMERS GROUP (DEEP IS THE MIDNIGHT SEA)and came across this CD, it is soooooooooo great. I just started salsa dancing by myself when I played this song. I listen to the rest of the CD and this relaxed feeling came over me. Thank you for putting Rare Requests Volume 3 together.

The David Blamires Group track, "Deep Is The Midnight Sea" is a hit with our listeners in Canada! The phones light up every time I spin it! Warren Hill's "The Passion Theme" is another great one. Good combination of vocals and instrumentals including the now-hard-to-find Blamires song!

If you love to listen to smooth jazz in the evening you will appreciate this music. My favorite song is "Tell It Like It Is" featuring Bobby Caldwell. The songs are smooth and easy to listen to - try Harlem Nocture by Kofi. The compilation itself is so well put together - and you can listen as many times as you want without waiting to hear it on the radio.

We love this. I like the mix of music. It was because of this cd my 9 year old daughter wnated to learn how to play canon on our piano. She now is a great player because of this inspiration. She also learned how to play . Gymnopedies No. 1 . Thank-you for the inspiration and the many romantic nights.

This cd is one that I stumbled onto at the record store. I had never heard of Chris Peacock before. I am sure the people who live in Washington State know his name very well, for this is where he performs his magic.

To talk a little bit about this cd, I would like to begin by saying Chris sure is a master of the piano. He plays in a very natural style with great command of his songs. He does not try to show off, but delivers a grand perfomance.

The only dark spot I can bring to your attention, about this cd, is the song selection. I thought it could have been better. Chris plays a mixture of classical and popular songs. I feel like this was probably a mistake to mix the two venues.

I will plan to buy more of Chris' cds in the near future.

    5 out of 5 stars A Musical Upstart - Excellent.......2005-09-01

Comedy with a difference. What!? No swearing????
Todays comedian often resort to expletives to get their humour across. Victor is old school, very talented musically and is funny to all ages. For the young a very funny introduction to the classics.

    5 out of 5 stars Shear Delight.......2000-11-13

As a very small boy growing up in Australia in the early 1960's, my Father introduced me to the talents of Victor Borge when we used to listed to two of his albums, 'Comedy in Music' and this one 'Caught in the Act'. They contain all the magic and charm of this most talented pianist and comedian. This particular album has some of his finest work, whether it be his comedy or his brilliant piano playing. Together these albums make up the story from the beginning and will encourage to seek out other works of his. All my brothers (and I have 7)still laugh every time we hear him perform. Once hooked you can't resist. I have seen him live and have videos of his later performances where he performs a number of his best known routines most of which are first performed on these two albums. I can honestly say that you will not be disappointed with this CD. I have recently bought the record version of Comedy in Music and would part with blood to get this one on record. That's the nostalgia in me coming out, but it would be worth it for such a brilliant album.

Help support these acts by going and seeking other recordings of their music. The label that put out this compilation has not paid the artists one cent in royalties. Not only that, but they have not even gotten permission to use a few of the tracks on this CD. I should know, because one of my songs are on this recording. Don't support these crooks.

The cover of Take Five gets a lot of airplay on WCLK - the local all jazz station in Atlanta. That prompted me to explore the rest of the tracks. Very good mix of established artists. Very smooth recordings that even those with a short attention span could get into.

    4 out of 5 stars Great Mix.......2000-11-21

First of all, a great compilation of smooth jazz. Intertwined in the cd are some common hits like "Take Five", mixed by the group XL, and some rare hits such as "The Groove." There was only one song that I disliked, as the solo instrument was vocal, which was "Driftin'" by Sean Oliver. But, it was a great buy, and I would definitely BUY IT NOW!

      4 out of 5 stars Kool Disc..........2005-01-04

Nice compilation! Will serve as nice background music for a party of close friends.
First cut (Freedom Words) is a hopping, up-beat number that is well produced. Next cut (Foreign Nature) is a well played familiar "airy" piece with a slight Latin feel... one of my favorites. Next is "The Most Beautiful Girl" which is al little strange, but it grows on you as it plays... features some nice Tenor Sax work from an obscure(?) Brian Gallagher.

Next up is "Ocean Way" which is a great guitar piece by Brazilian; Torcuato Mariano (See http://musicabrasileira.org/reviewsinterviews/tmdiario.html). This cut sounds a bit like a Russ Freeman piece, but better. For me it was one of the best listening pieces on the album. I need to look into this guy more.

Next is "Felinicity", a fantastic smooth and silky piano piece with some great guitar rifts.
"NYC Trip'n" is a nice funky piano piece... Yes the bass lines are there in the background. I imagine this one gets some airplay late at night in the big apple.
"ML in the SunShine" is an ok guitar piece... probably the low point on the album and it not all that bad. It has some great riffs for those that like creative guitar work and don't mind the Xylophone.
"Darlin' Darlin' Baby" is cut 7... with some great guitar work is well done and is easy on the ears.
"Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child " is a piano and string "play" on an old classic. It is well done and hints as to why this is a classic tune that has stood the test of time.
"For Real" features the guitar work of Eric Essex, who for those that know, is no stranger to the Smooth Jazz listening world. One of his best!
"Summer Soulstice" is the compilations final cut... Has a nice tight Funky feel.
All in all a nice album...
      Enjoy
