Ivan Moravec's performances of the Scherzos make an interesting contrast to the supercharged versions of Cyprien Katsaris (Teldec). Katsaris is often frenetically fast, and he convinces you by overwhelming you. Moravec is more nuanced, mellower, more downright sensible. Yet he never lacks for excitement, and in the end his playing is a more profound and satisfying statement of the music. The other selected Chopin pieces are just as satisfying, and the recording, made in the legendary Troy Savings Bank Music Hall, is extremely realistic. This is one of the better Chopin recitals currently available. --Leslie Gerber

I tend to agree with the other reviewers about the transcription itself (Pictures). I find it over the top, frankly. However, the playing is sublime and the interpretation weird but well thought out.

I suggest you listen to the recording because it brings out the organ's delicious stops (the Gnome for example uses the contrafagotto briliantly). Quirky it is, but I like its colourings.

This is one of those unfortunate recordings which gets far too much kudos for its - admittedly exceptional - technical qualities. Jean Guillou has actually tried pretty hard to voice a new interpretation of Mussorgsky's "Pictures" but is ultimately unsuccessful. It was an admirable attempt but musically it is not really up to scratch. Guillou is a fine performer but would probably have been better off sticking to Cesar Franck's compositions rather than taking on Mussorgsky.

The much-vaunted recording quality is, indeed, worth mentioning because it is so clean and is a good test for an audiophile-grade HiFi system but it must be remembered that this is supposed to be about the music and I will not give it points on that score alone. There are many other recordings of excellent quality out there which are better interpretations as well. The recording doesn't fit into the "disaster" category, as does the Emerson, Lake and Palmer offering from the 1970s which merged "Pictures" with - Lord help us - prog rock, but it probably won't satisfy either pipe organ fans or afficianados of the original work.

To a degree, I personally like it but I cannot recommend it as a good interpretation. I can only put it in the "nice try" category.

Like his other recordings, this disc demonstrates the fantastic genius of Jean Guillou. The choice of the correct organ stops for the "Pictures", a typicaly piano work, is a particularly difficult problem, briliantly resolved by Guillou. The stops he uses create "acoustic" pictures that stick very well to the different pieces.
And the technique of Guillou is amazing, showing his mastery of his instrument.

It seems my opinion is at odds with the previous 2 reviews posted. I bought this CD when it first came out and had been reviewed favorably by Stereophile. Being quite familiar with "Pictures..." I was looking forward to a tour d'force, given the capabilities of a world class pipe organ. What a disappointment!!! While the recording and playing technique is outstanding, the transcription/interpretation, taken as a whole, is abysmal. Starting with the weak registration selected to open the first "Promenade", things never really get better, although they do get worse. Guillou takes off on a bizarre tangent in "The Great Gate..." which seems more of a personal exorcism than an interpretive benefit. If memory serves me, "The Tuileries" and "...Chicks in their Shells" were the lesser evils. Frankly, I found the description of the organ in the liner notes more interesting than the performance. My opinion is that the best use of this CD is for testing the bass response of your loudspeakers. There is good news, however; just recently I was able to sell this CD!!!! My advice is to listen to this CD in its entirety before committing any money to buy it.

One of the best organ recordings I have ever heard. In this instance the organ version sounds much, much better than the orchestral version. Use of different colors of the organ simply outstanding!! Guillou's playing was stunning!!

    Two nights ago I attended a Burning River Concert in a rather small intimate theatre. Amazing sounds and dynamics! Amazing virtuosity and amazing ensemble playing! I bought this CD at the concert and have been listening to it. The recording quality is quite good. At lot of the live excitement is captured. Some of the CD's selections were on the evening's program; the others are a nice surprise. The size of the group (eleven brass and one percussionist) is so much better than the usual quintet of, say, the Empire Brass. It's really interesting to hear the four trumpeters trade phrases - of course it's easier to detect this at live performances. And when they are all playing together at double forte level it can take your breath away. You should really crank up the volume to get the full benefit. Otherwise, make sure you attend their next concert in your neighborhood.

    Given a title such as , one would expect (especially from Dorian) a program of medieval troubador music and songs (of which a little goes a long way). But, as you can see from the contents list above, The Burning River Brass has gathered several symphonic pieces from all ages (19 in all, by the way) and arranged them very nicely indeed for brass ensemble.

    One might question what Mozart's Queen of the Night is doing in such company, but she was trying to storm a fortress in the second act.... What matter, as long as it is played this well!

    Like almost all Dorian products, this is a collection of music rare enough to guarantee its welcome into any collection--and as such makes a great gift for whatever occasion is coming up.

    A variety of musical styles and a wide assortment of artists are brought together on this recording celebrating the first decade of my favorite record label-Dorian. It is all here: early music to twentieth century Latin American orchestral pieces. A lot of my favorite artists (Custer LaRue, The Baltimore Consort, Carol Thompson, Chatham Baroque, and Julianne Baird to name a few) are represented here. This disc is interesting and entertaining listening on its own merits. It is an indispensable introduction to the label. Either way, I recommend it.

      This brass ensemble plays with an agressive yet very clean style. They are technically flawless, very together and very in tune. Most of the selections are late romantic or early contemporary. The trombones dominate sometimes giving the ensemble a bold, bottom sound. Their tone is right on the edge, but not over it, very exciting. If you like a big brass sounds and you like late romantic music, buy this CD!

      You will never hear Mussorgsky's "Pictures" the same way again. Even if you have this piece, and perhaps, especially if you are familiar with the melodies, you will never, ever be sorry you have this version bravely done for the organ.

      This recording is absolutely amazing! Jean Guillou gives what in my opinion is the greatest piece of organ playing I have ever heard! In Pictures at an Exhibition, Guillou gives a very exciting performance which is registered wonderfully. Guillou's organ playing is bigger than life. This is truly the best recording of Pictures that I posess. Also included are three danses form Petrouchka in which Guillou just amazes me. These works are pose extroardinary technical difficalties for the performer and Guillou just rises above these difficulties with a magnificently orchestral performance!

      This is a Re-issue in 24bit sound and on a 24k. Gold Disc Organist Jean Guillou delivers his transcripttion of Mussorgsky's Pictures done not on a piano or with an orchestra, but on the Pipe Organ. His performance is first rate! True to the Composer in every way. The Dorian engineers have done the whole thing justice by making this a recording that puts the Organ in the room with the listener, and the Organ is so faithfully recorded that included with the booklet is a warning about being careful with the volume levels. This recording will truly test the bass response of your speaker system and give you a performance that is not easily forgotten. As an addition Three of the dances from Stravinsky's "Petouchka" are included. All in all an excellent disc.
