Editorial Reviews
Hayley is an Anglo-Indian pop diva from a family of ten with plenty to talk about. She is a native of Brixton, the tough, music loving London neighborhood that gave rise to the working class narratives of punk rock and the infectious grooves of Soul to Soul, and the spirit of each is in her work. Her band will be performing cuts from her upcoming LP, "Leaving London" a soulful musical memoir that tells the unique story of one funky, sexy immigrant. Her unique vocal style and pop sensibility reflect musical influences as diverse as her voice coach's Ali Akba Khan, the famous Indian singer / sitar player, and Raz Kennedy of Bobby McPheron's "Voicestra", to her tenure as one of the lead singers of the wildly popular 70's cover band "Super Booty." This is Sade meets Prince by way of the streets of south London. This band is not to be missed. Hayley's dynamic presence, ethereal vocal style, and song writing have attracted a strong band and studio team. Ben Yonas, (Production/Keyboards) has worked with Smashmouth, Santana's lead vocalist Tony Lindsay, members of UK's Zero7 and NYC based, Her Favorite Things. Fellow Brit, Gawain Mathews, (guitar), is a member of the Tony Furtado band as well as the Matt Flinner Quartet. Featured artists on her EP include Smashmouth's Michael Urbano (drums), Stokley Williams (drums) of Mint Condition, and Rob Mullarky (bass) also of Zero7. "Hayley blends catchy hooks with superb cutting edge production that is both organic and electronic. "Love You Girl" is a track that would go as well with Sade as it would Soulstice. "I Can't Do That" is a dance floor number showcasing Hayley's ethereal vocals and producer Ben Yonas' studio chops." Jeff Straw Regional Buyer S.F Virgin Megastore

Having sung before royalty and performed with the Irish super-group Celtic Woman, Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli, and Welsh baritone Bryn Terfel, the very young and remarkably beautiful singer is back with a tribute to her Celtic ancestry. As with her previous Platinum-selling releases (she is already a huge star in her native New Zealand, Japan, Australia, and the UK), the orchestrations are lush, with sighing phalanxes of strings and woodwinds. But in keeping with the avowed theme, there are also soft touches of soulful, wavering tin whistles and vaguely fiddle-like violin vamps. The program is more varied than the album's title might lead one to expect, encompassing everything from "The Last Rose Of Summer" and "Danny Boy" to "Shenandoah," "Scarborough Fair," "Abide With Me," and even a couple of more pop-oriented songs penned by Westenra herself. However, brief sideways winks toward Nashville or the Great White Way do not adulterate the album's overall mood of ethereal, remote bliss. The one misstep is an English-language cover of "Un Bel Di" ("One Fine Day") from Puccini's Madama Butterfly: an aria unsuited to the artist's fragile, bell-like soprano and placid temperament. This aside, established classical crossover/theatrical divas like Sarah Brightman would be wise to begin looking to their laurels. --Christina RodenAlbum Description
Hayley's third solo album is a very personal collection of classical arias, Irish and Maori folk songs - representing treasured people and places on her remarkable musical journey. Recorded in Dublin, Ireland, Hayley's third solo album is a very personal collection of classical arias, Irish and Maori folk songs - representing treasured people and places in her remarkable musical journey. For the first time the album also includes several original tracks written by Hayley herself. Celtic Treasure is a celebration of Hayley's family roots, and her grandparent's journey across the World on the first boat that left Ireland for New Zealand in the 1880s - taking with them a rich musical heritage. Her grandmother - a singer, and her grandfather, who played the accordion, were to be important influences on Hayley's musical development. Hayley grew up hearing her grandmother singing Italian opera arias in English. Hayley has continued this tradition by recording the well-known aria One Fine Day... ('Un bel di) from Puccini's Madama Butterfly. Hayley's grandmother also sang Irish folk tunes, and Hayley includes one of them - Danny Boy on the album as a tribute to her. Another Irish folk tune Sonny, is the first recording in which Hayley accompanies herself on the piano. In the same vein as Hayley's signature song Pokarekare Ana from her debut album Pure, Hayley's deep sense of pride as a New Zealander, and the simple beauty of her voice come together in E Para Ra - a Maori lovesong reflecting her own love of her homeland. Hayley's first recordings of her own songs bring together all these musical influences. They include her compositions Let Me Lie and Summer Rain and her lyrics to a haunting lute song by the Elizabethan English composer John Dowland, called simply Melancholy Interlude.Customer Reviews:
Disappointing.......2007-07-13
This CD is pretty uninspired and Westenra's voice sounds just average on several of the tracks. There are a few impressive spots but generally I thought the CD was less than expected.

Hayley has a clear, and pure voice that makes these familiar songs sound brand new. Though the whole album is a treat, the two hymns are inspiring. Others have done this repitoire, and done it well; none has done it better.
Hayley has a new recording of "West Side Story" due out soon; I can't wait. In the meantime, do not fail to grab this one.

Album Description
Hayley Westenra's new album Odyssey was always going to be a different proposition to Pure, the record-breaking 2003 collection which marked her international debut. A lot has happened to the young New Zealander over the past two or three years--and those changes are clearly reflected by a record which encapsulates her growth from a budding teenage prodigy into a mature young woman. Now, at 18, Hayley is ready to show the world how much she has grown up, both as an artist and as an individual. Fans of Pure will be pleasantly surprised by her new album. Her wonderful voice retains its crystal-clear purity, but Westenra's singing is now richer and more rounded than before. Touring the world and singing in some of its greatest concert venues, such as the Sydney Opera House, Royal Albert Hall, and Carnegie Hall, has worked wonders for her confidence. Suitably emboldened, she has embraced an even wider range of musical styles including classical, hymns, folk and pop. "I was happy with Pure at the time, but I've moved on so much," says Hayley. "It's really exciting to have something new out there for people to listen to. I wanted to make a record that represented me as a person. And I think I've improved as a vocalist." Variety is certainly one of the keywords with Hayley's new album. When she first entered a recording studio in New Zealand as a 12-year-old, Westenra restricted herself to classical pieces and show tunes. Now, in addition to impressive takes on classical works, Hayley uses her new album to perform an inspired cover of Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now" and has arranged and written much of the material. "I like to push myself, and I'm now confident enough to try different things. I have been much more involved behind the scenes with this album--I wanted to put my individual stamp on each song." With her career stretching out promisingly before her, Hayley is also keen to continue experimenting. She is still primarily a classical crossover artist but she also wants to keep broadening those musical horizons. Three years after her international debut CD, Hayley Westenra is still pure: she exudes pure quality and she remains pure class--but her musical journey continues with her new album Odyssey.Customer Reviews:

Disney management has often been accused of sacrificing the long-term quality of its animated features for the short-term pay-off of direct-to-video sequels to its middling modern successes. But as this soundtrack-sequel to the studio's 1998 quasi-feminist Chinese folk-tale proves, the music of such ventures can often compare favorably with that of the original. This new collection's buoyant "(I Wanna Be) Like Other Girls" is offered up in two versions: A more traditional stage musical take and an antic cover by Atomic Kitten that's pure teeny-bopping Disney Channel fodder. That's Harvey Fierstein lending his gravelly pipes to the equally spry redux of "A Girl Worth Fighting For," while the decidedly more angelic pipes of Kiwi teen soprano phenom Hayley Westenra grace the elegant "Here Beside Me" by Joel McNeely and Kate Light. Selections from McNeely's deft, emotionally understated orchestral score flesh out the collection. --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:
Alright...........2005-11-30
I wasn't impressed, but I did enjoy it.
Terrible movie, but good soundtrack!.......2005-11-03
The first song in this movie was "Lesson Number One", and it was my favourite. I love the choirs of children, it was perfect! It made me recognize the children's choirs in the church. Lea Salonga's voice was so sweet, and it's my favourite style! "A girl worth fighting for" came up in this soundtrak but it was remixed, and most of the lyrics were changed. Although it was very different from the original one, I love it. Because it gave me a good feeling, and I felt that it was more humorous than the original one. Another song named "Like other girls" is one of my favourites. Mei's voice was a little strange but very cute. The three princesses seemed to be crazy, but I could feel their emotion that they were eager of freedom and very unsetisfied with the arranged marrige. I felt very happy that they found their love and happiness by the end.
This was a movie which was so terrible but with perfect songs I have ever seen!

I frequently purchase the import versions of her CD's because they have additional songs. Treasure certainly lives up to its name. Miss Westenra's family has a rich musical background which leads back to Ireland. These are songs she grew up listening to and has made her own.
I especially love "Let Me Lie," "Shenandoah," "E Pari Pa," and "Abide With Me." The duet featuring Humphrey Berney ("Le Notte Del Silenzio") was truly beautiful. "Bist Du Bei Mir" was also an incredible track.
I can't say enough about this artist. I wish her all the success in the world! I recommend that anyone who hasn't heard of Miss Westenra yet, take a listen. You don't know what your missing.

dusty springfield had a song or two that borrowed melodies from the classical music genre, and aretha franklin famously growled her way through 'nessun dorma' at the grammys back in 1999. but this is very different and bold.
and no one, not even those with the vocals chops and training like linda ronstadt wouldn't take this one on for size.
it is easy to hear that streisand has put all her stylistic trademarks on hold and performed her recital with integrity. and at times, a different streisand emerges and it's quite nice. it's only a phrase here and a note there but it's interesting to hear.
be warned--she still sounds like barbra streisand. and there's one song i personally wish she hadn't sang (the canteloube), only because there's another song in that canon that might have served her even better called 'la dellaisado'.

Those are Japanese characters in the third title. (Thank you, CDDB; I never would've figured them out myself.) [Edit: Looks like the Japanese characters may not come through in the review. They showed up in the text box. Oh, well.]
As reported, it's apparently a German classical song. The first two tracks are in German -- as the tracks say, first slow, then faster. The third is apparently the same song in Japanese. Yes, Hayley sings all three.
The lyrics are printed inside the sleeve. I'm not even going to attempt to figure out how to do the Japanese characters, but the German is as follows. (There may be typos; I was not watching the screen most of the time while I typed them.)
Schlafe, mein Prinzchen schlaf ein,
Es ruhn nun Schäfchen un Vögelein,
Garten und Wiese verstummt,
Auch nicht ein Bienchen mehr summt,
Luna mit silbernem Schein
Gucket zum Fenster herein,
Schlafe beim silbernen Schein,
Schlafe, mein Prinzchen, Schlaf ein!
Alles im Schlosse schon liegt,
Alles in Schlummer gewiegt;
Reget kein Mäuschen sich mehr,
Keller und Küche sind leer,
Nur in der Zofe Gemach
Tönet ein schmachtendes Ach!
Was für ein Ach mag dies sein?
Schlafe, mein Prinzchen, schlaf ein!
Wer ist beglüchter als du?
Nicht als Vergnügen und Ruh!
Spielwerk und Zucker vollauf,
Und noch Karossen im Lauf,
Alles besorgt und bereit,
Daß nur mein Prinzchen nicht schreit.
Was wird da künftig erst sein?
Schlafe, mein Prinzchen, schlaf ein!

As for my personal rating, this is a beautiful song and performance, but probably only "average" compared to Hayley's other work. If I had heard it first, I may not have been willing to spend the $22.50 import price. It would've been worth the normal price of a CD single, though. I wish it was available in the (U.S.) Apple Music Store.

Album Description
"The New World" is an epic adventure set amid the encounter of European and Native American cultures during the founding of the Jamestown settlement in 1607. James Horner's lush score invigorates the film as the characters explore love, loss, and discovery in the early Americas. Past score highlights include "Titanic", "Braveheart", "The Legend Of Zorro", "Troy", "A Beautiful Mind", and "Apollo 13". Directed by Terrence Malick and starring Colin Farrell, Christian Bale, and Q'orianka Kilcher as Pocahontas.Customer Reviews:
Sleepy transgression with music ripped off from classical composers of other eras.......2007-04-28
Because she achieved a level of fame worldwide from marrying an Englishman, Pocahontas's life is legendary. No one can prove or disprove many of these legends, some of which are included in this movie. What most works against the film as entertainment is the "script" that takes place in the characters' minds much of the time. The film score, which rips off a number of classical composers and uses music that wasn't invented in 1607, works against the film intellectually.
First, the script and its affect on acting and progression of thes story. Pocahantas's relationships with John Smith (Colin Farrell), later, John Rolfe (Christian Bale) is the main story captured in the film. We see Smith introduced to the natives home after being captured. He and Pocahantas fall in love and later she leaves the native home. This leads to conflict between the Euros and natives. Smith departs some time later and Pocahantas marries the other guy, then travels to England to meet the queen. There is more to it but the story is not the principal issue.
The principal issue is the awkward presentation of script and events with lengthy sequences of silence followed by script read in near silence that is supposed to represent what the characters are thinking. I found it confusing to follow, I couldn't make out what they were saying a lot of the time, and it was really boring. Later, after Pocahantas learns a few words of English there is less of this. My wife enjoyed this film thrice so I know you can overcome this issue and like the movie.
What I could not overcome on an intellectual level is the musical score. When a critic writes in Amazon that, "James Horner's lush score invigorates the film as the characters explore love, loss, and discovery in the early Americas," he forgets to mention this music in this score is ripped off from classical composers Richard Wagner, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and Hery Purcell.
The main theme in the score is a ripoff of Wagner's "Good Friday Spell" sequence from his opera "Parsifal". This theme is not only a ripoff, it is unbelievably repetitive the way it's used in the film. As used here, the theme reminded me of the 1960s song "Henry the 8th" where a Brit sings "I'm Hen-er-y the eighth I am, Hen-er-y the eighth I am I am" over and over ad nauseum.
This film score also rips off the central section of a Mozart piano concerto and a vocal piece by British composer Henry Purcell. None of these composers were writing music in 1607 and only one of them, Purcell, even lived during that century.
Maybe this doesn't matter to you as a moviegoer but it intellectually renders the score inert insofar as none of the music presneted had been invented in the era of the movie (1607-1617). In fact, outside the Purcell piece, the other two composers wouldn't be writing these pieces until the late 1700s and late 1800s, respectively.
So it matters to me and it helped lead to my low ranking for this film, which can be enjoyed on a certain level by people that hate a lot of talking in the movies. Otherwise, the period piece may or may not be correct in some areas (the helmets those Brits wore sure look like what we know the French Hugenots wore) but it is altogether incorrect in terms of music. At the time this film was supposed to represent, the concept of harmony had not yet been invented in European music.
All told, this film can be recommended to people that like the actors, history, romance and mild adventure, elements that are on display throughout the movie's 100 minutes. Don't look for much outside that, however, and prepare to be bored if you want any kind of action.

Songs not on the soundtrack.......2006-08-05
i was just wondering if anyone had those songs that were not on James Horner's soundtrack. I was just looking for those 2 songs: the one that starts the movie (Wagner: Das Rheingold - Vorspiel, and the other is piano (Mozart: Piano Concerto 23 - Adagio)... if u do have them can u send it over thru email (Jeffrey.Wang@student.ucr.edu)
much appreciated - jeff
Utterly Beautiful.......2006-07-10
When watching the film i felt that the Das Rheingold opera was too intrusive whereas Horner's score may not be particularly thematic but its slow beauty matches perfectly the onscreen images.

Wildly influential four-piece Sonic Youth have self-released their version of a tribute to the 20th century: two discs of noisy interpretations of modern, experimental classical scores. The group has chosen composers whose works leave a great amount of innovation open to the performer. This chance-embracing approach--typified and in some senses originated by John Cage--is one of the crucial turning points of "new" music. What's great about this CD is that it demonstrates the freewheeling, decidedly unserious spirit behind this music, essentially combining the legacies of punk rock and out-sound. In addition to three late works by the chance-loving Cage, there are pieces by current Merce Cunningham collaborator Takehisa Kosugi, minimalist giant Steve Reich, "deep-listening" drone lover Pauline Oliveros, and Fluxus founder George Maciunas. Longtime collaborator Wharton Tiers, the young everything-ist Jim O'Rourke, and even some of the composers themselves join in on these exercises. The result is messy, fun, and anarchic, with occasional revelations (notably James Tenney's "Having Never Written a Note for Percussion"). It's not a disc to play all the time, but it is a challenging, enthused record that ideally will point listeners toward some of the most vital music of the last half of the last decade of the second millennium. --Mike McGonigalAlbum Description

a tribute with poor feedbacks.......2006-04-14
Sometimes it does get endurable but at other times it completely falls out to miss the mark. Even if Wolff himself appears at times and also the renowned Marclay contributes it doesn't even come close to the originals at any time. It may be said that some of the tracks more demolishes than recaptures them.
Most of those who reviews here or rate are diehard SY fans and would probably give five stars to anything that SY put out, whatever it is. If they recorded an album of silence in hommage to Cage they would give it five stars too and call it great and important and other such stuff. We all know how that works, it is just sensual and silly.
But for those with commited interest in the musical field that is quite so misrepresented here it is but foolish to give this set of recordings too much attention.
Better is to try to get the original recordings themselves, or to get recent re-recordings of these, such like of California Ear Unit or Ars Nova ensemble etc. Pass this thing if you already know the composers work, and if you're new to these composers through this release, get the originals and compare.
I wish I could give three stars for this project, but I can't, the structures are too much weakened and the whole original soundwalls are too much torn down. If one wish to perform these works, which may not be too easy, than one should learn how to do so properly first. Otherwise, write a book...
"Keep it new".......2005-04-03
For this audience, this CD is just what was needed - a slap in the face of convention. If this sparks in anyone an interest in searching for "what else is out there," the exercise will have been well worth the effort.
Classical avant-garde experimentalism from.....a rock band?.......2004-11-21
The 4th CD in the SYR experimental series (titled Goodbye 20th Century, appropriatly) of Sonic Youth Records, is a fantastic double album soundscape of the finest kind. The CD has reinterpretations of post 50's era classical pieces (by such illustrious names as John Cage, Steve Reich, Christian Wolff), and they sound great for the most part. But Sonic Youth was not alone in recording this double album. They enlisted the help of many people, like Jim O'Rourke, Thurston Moore and Kim Gordon's daughter Coco Hayley Gordon Moore (who screams out Yoko Ono's Voice Piece for Soprano), and...surprisingly...Christian Wolff collaborates on his pieces with the band. There are many other contributors, but I can't recall them at the moment.
Judging from all the other tracks, the one that stands out the most (to me, anyway) is Pauline Oliveros' Six For New Time (composed specifically for this project). Thurston intones lyrics over rising and falling drone guitars. Genius. Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of other tracks that are as great, such as Steve Reich's Pendulum Music (swinging microphones over amps, creating a pendulum effect of feedback), and George Maciunas' Piano Piece #13 (hammering down the keys of a piano till they no longer produce sound).
The centerpiece of the album, though, is John Cage's Four6. There are 2 other John Cage songs on the album (Six, performed twice) but this one stands out the most. It may seem like random banging and aimless instrumental wandering, but give it a chance, and it will slowly reveal its beauty.
Overall, this album is a fantastic piece of avant-garde, and will certainly entertain the artier person in you.
If you enjoy this record, why not try other CD's in the SYR series, Lou Reed's Metal Machine Music, or seek out the works of the composers on this album?

lost me as a fan.......2003-03-10
i had the first syr disc and liked it. not great but it was ok. after that this band died. maybe my tastes change and i mourning this whole thing because i truly was proud to be an sy fan. i felt they were alive here and now and i got to enjoy them now. not like beatles fans or zepplin fans who can no longer see them live. i mourn the loss of the smashing pumpkins, the death of kurdt cobain, the death of mia zappata, death of layne staley, breakup of soundgarden, as well as many other bands i adore so for me to love sy and they are still here and making vibrant music meant alot.
then they came out with the syr discs. i liked the first a little but after that, this disc, the 4th in this series, i was forced to leave my fanship behind. this dics is long, boring, to long, uninterseting and way too long. 30 minutes for one song which interests me not at all is too much to ask.
i see their new direction and like it not. it is pretentious in the worst way. aimless, drifting, and uninteresting. like i said, someone email me and explain me what is so good about this
