5 out of 5 stars This band is the best!.......2006-09-21

There isn't a bad song on the CD. I bought it shortly after it came out and its still one of my favorites. I don't understand why this band isn't a huge success. Enough talk I need to buy their other albums.

5 out of 5 stars scratched a lot.......2005-03-12

this is i think the only album that i've owned and it got so scratched that i bought it again. take care of your cds, dag!! this was the high point in a long and largely forgettable career. and not just cuz of scooby snacks though that song clearly did and still does rule.

5 out of 5 stars Huey finds himself on the other side of the atlantic.......2004-07-16

The Fun Lovin' Criminals seem to have appealed a lot more to people over here on the far side of the pond than they did back Stateside, perhaps because it appeals to the British idea of what Cool America is like, rather than what Cool America is actually like: what sounded to well-educated British ears like really new, cutting edge, gritty authentic American music, I guess back at home probably came over not so much as authentic as bit middle class, a bit clever, a bit too "wiseass" to be the real thing. There's a limit to what you can get away with sampling - the horn riff in The King of New York is ripped off from a Richard Strauss tone poem, for crying out loud. Boys from the hood don't know about that stuff. Or at any rate shouldn't.

Nevertheless, this record stands the test of time - it lays down a tremendously appealing groove from the its very first resonator jangle, and the combination of that and the New York jazz sensibility (this from someone who knows and cares little for jazz, by the way), the smartarse sampling (*I* like it, even if the cognoscenti don't), Huey's laconic and irrepressibly funning rapping and big, BIG guitars does me quite nicely.

Carry on, chaps.

4 out of 5 stars great album.......2003-10-10

a lot of catchy tunes on this album. everybody knows 'scooby snacks'. my favourites are 'fun lovin criminal' and 'king of new york'.. king of new york is about john gotti... although i think factually, it's a bit inaccurate, it's a fun song! i don't know if the late john gotti would have appreciated the "never fly coach never save the roach" bit .. i mean cmon.. we're talking about big john gotti the dapper don not snoop doggy dog the dogfather. if gotti did drugs, which he almost certainly didn't, he wouldn't do pot! heh. but still a great song. i got this album ages ago, and i can still listen to it today.

5 out of 5 stars One of the greatest guitar oriented rap records ever.......2001-07-29

From the earth-shattering scream in the opening seconds of "The Fun Lovin' Criminal," to the end of "Methadonia," this talented NYC based trio delivers a contemporary rock n' roll classic, full of sharp hooks and intricate beats. This record is one of the most eclectic that has been made in a long while. Drawing on the best elements of hard rock, and urban rap, the FLC create a winning combination. Intelligent songwriting is found throughout the record. The songs here deal with a very wide range of topics, from gangsters, to bank robberies, the lyrics are funny, and witty. Hands down one of the best records of the 1990s, a winning combination of rap and hard rock, perforated with melody, and humor.

5 out of 5 stars swooning guitar.......2007-02-21

this is my surprise album for this year thus far.
i bought it from a pandora recommendation and absolutely love this album.

it's very swoony and etheral guitar with simplistic melodies and good vocals.
the album is a very well matched set of songs.
i'd highly recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent dreamy mood music.......2006-02-23

Quite removed from modern trends and therfore for people who can look outside of what's fashionable, this is a fantastic piece of dreamy guitar dream pop. Reminiscent of lots of early 90's UK shoegazer pop, its got all the necessasry ingrediants - relaxed vocals, walls of guitar effects and all in all is a superb listen. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars So good....top of the line ambient.......2005-10-14

If you like music from Cocteau twins, Slowdive, brain eno, my bloody valentine and or any other ambient chill music that just makes you feel good, you need this album, almost every song is great. in general this has the feeling of a cohesive album instead of a collection of random songs. if i were ever to make a movie, I would deffinately use some of these tunes in the soundtrack, hahaha...

5 out of 5 stars Wondrous and Lovely.......2004-03-10

I love this CD!! I saw the band play a week ago in L.A. If you are a shoegazer or dream pop fan, this is for you! The resplendent washes of background sound and feedback are pierced by beautiful guitar melodies. Arthur Chan's bass playing is superb, and his bass bridge on Same Lies As Yesterday leading as an interlude into the blending of the melody and harmony of the song is transformative. I'm not kiding. It brings tears to my eyes. On Our Own is just a wonderful melody. It makes me picture Olympus and Athena, Aphrodite or Hera gliding down to assist a human they love who's in peril. The point is, whatever's in your mind, this music will highlight it and bring it to a more metaphyscial level. It makes it more meaningful. All of the songs are good though, Freeze Our Stares, Wide Awake, Now I know You Could Never Be the One, etc. etc. Great CD. Buy it now!

5 out of 5 stars Great Music and Lyrics.......2004-03-02

If you like listening to and discovering new music then this band is a definitely worth checking out. I'm not a huge fan of shoegaze music however, I enjoy some songs done by `My Bloody Valentine'.

This band produces intelligent lyrics and original sounds with great rhythm and they have become one of my favorite newest discoveries in music. This album is worth owning!

Album Description

"Song From The Heart: Family Shabbat" is a collection of 19 original easy-to-sing songs for Shabbat suitable for adults and children to sing at services or at home. Carol sings most of the songs and is backed up by a youth choir as well as guitar, piano, Klezmer clarinet, violin, flute, saxophone, harp, keyboard, and percussion accompaniment. Your family will enjoy and sing along to these songs, some with catchy rhythms and others which are quite beautiful. This is also a wonderful resource for cantors, songleaders, and music teachers who are looking for new melodies to introduce to their congregations and schools.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Bringing families together.......2000-09-08

Carol's music will bring families together at home and at Services. Some of these songs are catchy -- like "Shalom Shabbat Shalom" and "Mi Chamocha." Others are great to play around with -- like "We Give You Thanks" and the other rounds, and "The 90-Second Adon Olam." And some are just plain beautiful, like "Shalom Rav," "V'ne'emar / Bayom Hahu," and "Y'varechecha." But all are easy to learn and sing. They will make it into our traditions at home and our congregational minhagim, at Tot and Family Shabbat services and even into our "regular" service life.

5 out of 5 stars Truly Loved It!.......2000-09-03

This music is so useable, so easy to sing, and fits right into services. But my family and I listen and sing along at home. It truly captures the spirit of Shabbat!

5 out of 5 stars All These Things Are Great.......2005-08-25

Well I would like to start off by complimenting the work art and the iregular cd case. Since you'd think it was a promo-cd not a single but its great! The songs are great. The normal album version and the radio edit which I am not very fond of since it doesn't show the true talent of THE KILLERS and "Why Don't You Find Out For Yourself" which people say is a cover and I don't know who was the original singer but I think THE KILLERS do a great job "remaking or re-singing" this song! and a bonus- it has the video which is great too!

5 out of 5 stars When the race is done, is there room for one more son.......2005-06-27

All these things that I've done is so beautiful, you'll be moved and influenced even if you didn't like either Mr. Brightside or Somebody told me. This is the second song that Brendan Flowers (Lead Vocalist) used the gospel choir in, and it gives it a surreal almost surround sound in the background as he sings. Very unique and quite moving to listen too, its as though the song is being sung reverently by Brendan.

In short love the killers, although I would say it's better if you just buy the entire CD Hot Fuss. At least for those of us that can't afford to buy singles all the time. Trust me, you won't be dissapointed or let down.

2 out of 5 stars Not really sure why I bought this..........2005-05-04

Probably because I've become a Killers/Interpol/Bravery fanatic. The title track is an okay song, but not really up there with their other recent singles from "Hot Fuss". "Why Don't You Find Out For Yourself" is a nice track that sounds like a studio recording, not a BBC session live track. Again, nice stuff, but does any of this really add to the overall Killers experience? I say no. Stick with the new single of "Smile Like You Mean it" and the remixes of "Somebody Told Me" and you'll be a happier Killer, IMO.

5 out of 5 stars Great Cover Tune, Cool Video!.......2005-02-06

I am now officially hooked on The Killers! This song is the best track from their album & I hope it will eventually be released here in the US. I bought it for the bonus track, "Why Don't You Find Out For Yourself," hoping it was a cover of a Morrissey song from 1994 & sure enough, it was! Brandon Flowers does an impressive job of recapturing Morrissey's angst while maintaining The Killers style throughout this live radio recording. Excellent!

The Radio Edit is just that- it cuts off the vocal/piano intro at the beginning & fades out early at the end- no other changes or remixing.

The video also makes this single worth owning. Brandon & the guys are walking down a city street, singing the song as they are barraged by fans & friends- kissing, hugging & following the band on their journey to a concert hall. They are even joined by a gospel choir for the "I got soul but I'm not a soldier" bridge. Nothing groundbreaking here, but fun to watch, regardless.

If you're a Killers fan, this cd single is a definite must-have for your collection & worth every penny for the Morrissey cover alone!

Album Description

THE MEETING PLACES' debut CD was recorded in Autumn, 2002 by Aaron Espinonza, the heralded musician [Earlimart] and producer [Elliot Smith, The Breeders, Folk Implosion]. While the album's elements and textures evoke the best of the early 1990s dream pop tradition (Slowdive, My Bloody Valentine, and Ride), singer Chase Harris' inimitable vocal delivery leads the quartet into memorable, unfamiliar sonic territory.

"Freeze Our Stares" launches the album with Scott McDonald's trademark thick, shimmered coatings of guitar resonance. Harris' cool, self-assured vocal melodies on "You Could Never Be the One" and "On Our Own" hint of vintage Jesus and Mary Chain. "See Through You" is a more casual, but no less poignant, excursion into more delicate melodic structures, recalling 'Souvlaki'-era Slowdive. Dean Yoshihara's nimble drumming propels the buoyant "Wide Awake" and ushers "Same Lies As Yesterday" through to its soaring chorus. "Take to the Sun" is a three-act epic suggesting Spiritualized — leading with Harris' distant vocals, transitioning into Arthur Chan's bass-driven middle act, and ending with a noise-laden coda.

'Find Yourself Along The Way' escorts dream pop into its next phase — songs written with flair and tunefulness, enchantingly dressed in an echoed veneer.

9/10/99 CHRIS MICHIE Tough Love (CatchARabbit Records) Reviewed by Eric Steiner, Cosmik Debris Magazine

Long-time San Francisco area back-up guitarist Chris Michie is out front on his third disc called Tough Love on CatchARabbit Records. His label should've been called CatchARecord Records, since Tough Love is well worth a listen. Chris has shared the stage with such blues luminaries as B.B. King, Albert King, Big Mama Thornton, Buddy Guy, and Elvin Bishop. In addition to playing with a who's who in the blues, Chris has played some of the Bay Area's trendsetting venues like The Fillmore, The Matrix, Winterland and The Family Dog. Michie's lead guitar sparkles on "Shaky House," an uptempo blues about life in an earthquake zone. He's got a full band with a capable horn section that ushers in the wistful "Don' Wanna Go," a song that gives voice to Viet Nam veterans who had second thoughts about returning stateside. My favorites include the straightahead jammin' instrumental of "The Terminal Dog," `cause I can hear him bending notes just like Buddy Guy and a lot of other great blues players. Tough Love is a fun rhythm and blues record, particularly for fans of 70's style guitar solos. In Chris Michie's hands, these guitar parts soar.

5 out of 5 stars Reviewing "Tough Love" in Better Guitar, Mark Starlin says:.......1999-08-16

Chris Michie is a veteran guitarist who has played live with such blues greats as B.B. King, Albert King, Buddy Guy, and Taj Mahal. He has also recorded and toured with popular artists such as Boz Scaggs, The Pointer Sisters, and Van Morrison. So it comes as no surprise that his latest effort would be a polished collection of blues numbers featuring R&B and rock influences. Tough Love starts out with two horn-driven numbers that feature some precise guitar playing and Chris' distinctive voice, but may leave guitarists wishing for a little less "polish." Never fear, by the third cut, Chris is ready to rip it up and does just that on "A Bone To Pick" where he cuts loose with some extended blues jamming. It is here you notice that Chris' tone is not your typical bluesman tone. In fact, his tone on many ofthe cuts is more "shredder" than blues. This is mainly due to his choice of an Ibanez 540R guitar and a Peavey Classic 50 amp. Instrumental guitar fans will find two great cuts on the CD. "Evil Employer", a catchy instrumental with smooth overdubbed guitars and a snarly lead, is a great showcase for Chris' chops. Chris then turns it up another notch on the flat out, uptempo blues instrumental "The Terminal Dog." Other guitar highlights include the cool, horn-like opening riffs of "Sweet Disposition", the intensity building solo of "Burning Down The Wind", and the echoed, clean toned solo of the moody "I Don't Wanna Go." The CD wraps up with "Anita Shodda", a blues/rock cut that would be at home on any ZZ Top CD. The track is unique tone-wise, thanks to the use of a Roland GP-8 guitar synthesizer for the rhythm guitar and a Peavey Blazer practice amp for the lead. The Blazer amp churns out an early 70's fuzzy tone that perfectly compliments Chris' strong fretwork on this track. Overall, Tough Love is a varied collection of solid playing that should appeal to many fans of blues and blues/rock guitar.

Journeyman player nice CD.Grows each time you listen...

5 out of 5 stars Great blues and roots rock........1999-02-23

The Independent Songwriters' Online Magazine says of "Tough Love": "This path to the blues gets off on the classic foot of, "Use Me". This song has been done by so many guitarists but it sounds the best when the writer of the song, Chris Michie, gets to strut his stuff all over the production. "Shaky House" Even with the repetitive lyrical structure, there's no denying that this tune rocks with the best of them. It's all about feel and this has got it! "A Bone To Pick" A decent guitar player will let the natural resonance of the instrument sing the song. Chris lets the chords breathe on their own and doesn't bother to squish the notes on top of one another. The guy knows how to play, that's for sure. "Evil Employer" funkified sensuality.

"Gimpy" retro-60's flavor with a somewhat subdued edge. "Don't Wanna Go" Ain't nuttin' like a sax to set that sultry kind of mood. Everything from Kennedy, Nixon, Lennon and Saigon......it's all in there and ready for your listening pleasure. "Burnin' Down The Wind" hard rockin' satisfaction. "Sweet Disposition" there's danger in the air. "The Method" the drums really cut through the mix and give this one a powerful presence. Impressive drum work and exciting musical directions that bounce around playfully. "The Terminal Dog" the B. B King and Johnnie Johnson kind-of-ditty that just makes you have to get up and dance. Another awesome display of Chris' guitar mastery. "Anita Shodda" made for full decibel audiences. Tight, reverbed harmonies weave in and out of the odd backdrop.

IN SUMMARY: Chris Michie is a strong, solid player with a knack for writing a clean song. No fluff or fill. This is 100% blues/rock played straight and sweet.

      Album Description

From an island off the beautiful Washington coastline comes an ambitious new project, Ron Stubbs' "The Heart's Journey". This unique album combines noted clinical hypnotherapist and instructor Ron Stubbs' narration with the music of acclaimed keyboardist and composer Laurie Z to create an incredibly powerful relaxation experience. The story that is unveiled is universal in our age. It describes the journey of a man who grows up beside a beach, relishing and treasuring the plants, animals and nature. As he grows older and life becomes more fast paced and stress filled, his love for the beach diminishes. He packs a bag full of all the essential items that he believes he needs for a journey. A Journey of the Heart, to capture what he has lost in life. As he finds his answers, you may just find your answers also…. Ron Stubbs places the listener in a relaxed, hypnotic state, then through the use of storytelling and metaphor, provides a comfortable environment in which tension and anxiety can be released. Many listeners with physical aliments affected by stress find themselves relaxed and uplifted by this album. The score created by composer Laurie Z specially to accompany Ron's Narration provides a lush backdrop for the piece. To further the meditative state following "The Heart's Journey" story, Laurie Z's music provides the beautiful second track on this CD, bringing the total CD time to just under one hour.

      5 out of 5 stars A soothing story.......2003-08-01

After listening to Ron Stubb's "A Hearts Journey" a few times I can say, with great confidence, that it will relax you and if you are at all like me it will teach you a life lesson, or perhaps many lessons. Also, the sounds on track two, following the journey, are quite relaxing and I find they are nice to fall alseep to. I highly recommend checking out this compact disc, it is helpful wether you have problems or mearly want to find a way to relax.

5 out of 5 stars A journey you will take again and again and again ...........2003-06-24

This audio program is a inner journey of discovery and insight. I just got it and have listened to it numerous times already. It has become one of my new favorites. I LOVE it!

I remember the way I felt the first time I read some of my favorite books, the way I felt when I first heard some of the songs that have gone on to become my all time favorites. That is the way I feel about this CD; I know it will be with me for years to come.

The music is beautiful and supportive and the words roll over you and shine a light on our past, our future, our needs, fears, wants and desires.

Ron makes us realize how easy it is to forget what is really important, and more importantly, makes us rediscover those aspects of our lives. He helps us rediscover our heart's journey and ourselves along the way.

      Highly recommended.
