Imagine an unsoiled, slicked-up Replacements with radio-friendly vocals, and you'll understand the insta-thrills and boundless potential of this Buffalo trio's major label debut. "Fallin' Down" and the anthemic "We Are the Normal" spearhead a great power-pop album. --Jeff Bateman

5 out of 5 stars The Best of the Goos.......2007-02-20

I have been a fan of the Goo Goo Dolls since the early 90's, pretty much since the release of "Name" Shortly after I got their next CD; "Dizzy Up the Girl", I found out that they had released a few CDs that went under the radar because of their label. Their Self-titled CD was pretty hard to find (I got it about 6 years ago), Jed (I found out that "Goo Goo Dolls" is the same way) was over the top garage/Punk rock that was too loud for it's own good and was poorly written. In "Hold Me Up" I could see that the band began to mature, both as a band and as individuals. The tracks were a bit more memorable and interesting. Then I got to the pinacle of the GGDs. "Superstar Carwash" is the very best work the three from Buffalo have ever done. It is not geared to be played on the radio. It is not for the PR guy, trying to sell a CD. It is written by the band, for the band and that's it. It is the perfect mix of Johnny's ballads and Robbie's rock. "Girl Right Next to Me" is the prototype of this successful combanation. I highly recommend this CD to anyone that enjoys the B-side (meaning non-singles) music from the GGDs. If you like the commercial music that the Dolls have been pumping out lately, this CD will not work for you. If you like "January Friend" from "Dizzy Up the Girl" and "Flat-Top" from "A Boy Named Goo", then you will enjoy this CD as much as I do. I also hope that Johnny, Robbie and Mike get back to their roots and write more songs a long the lines of this CD and "A Boy Named Goo" for their next CD.

5 out of 5 stars That's right, 5 stars.......2006-12-06

There's really only one weak track (every record has one) which I just don't play and it aside, this is such a great record--great songwriting, riffs and a production-style I just love. I heard this at a particular time (1993) and I've locked it in ever since.

It has a great sound: the drums kick with a tight bass drum, the bass locks into that, and the guitar playing rips with crunchy rhythms and stratospheric leads. The vocals wash over all of that and it *all* works. Listen for yourself. It's one of the best, heaviest pop records I've ever heard, and it gives me great pleasure to read all these reviews of a record I thought I only knew and loved.

I really don't know what they did before or after this--I've really never needed to hear anything else from them--I don't see how it could be surpassed.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best Alt Rock Albums EVER!!!.......2006-11-04

The perfect mix of brash and polish, Superstar Car Wash is the ultimate listening experience for those of us still in love with the music of the 90's. Every song is solid and every song is toe tapper. Definitely one of the Goo's best albums, and surprising to anyone who isn't familiar with early Goo Goo Dolls sounds, for it is mature and thoughtful but not cheesy or contrived. The highlights on the album are "We Are the Normal"; "Stop the World"; "Another Second Time Around"; "Cuz You're Gone" and "Already There", but every song rocks!!!

4 out of 5 stars Superstar Goo .......2006-08-03

The Goo Goo Doll's fourth album: SUPERSTAR CAR WASH, was when the band finally had come together as a band. The guitar, bass, drums, and other guest instruments were in time with one another and were not overpowering to a particular instrument. Sound levels were recorded perfectly and that in itself has a major impact of Goo Goo Doll's progression within their sound. Johnny Rzeznik had matured enough as a musician to realize that playing fast and all over the guitar neck does not always work with the songs the band performs. For this record, Rzeznik finally starts to produce melody lines. They are still pretty grudgy, but are clearer than in his previous performances. He also starts working even more with clean tone quality and his soon to be famous accoustic quality. Rzeznik's lyrics are some powerful stuff as with most of his work. This record also has the band working with string instruments, and the best track off the record has to be "We Are the Normal" because it has a beautiful single viola part to it. The only set back for this record is the bass player's songs. They are just not as good as Rzeznik's and it really starts to show on this record as it does on future Goo Goo Dolls' records. SUPERSTAR CAR WASH is a good rocker album and one to listen to if you are a Goo Goo Doll fan.

Stand out tracks include:
"Fallin' Down"
"'Cuz You're Gone"
"Domino"
"We Are the Normal"
"String of Lies"
"Stop the World"
"On the Lie"
"So Far Away"

4 out of 5 stars The Goo Goo Dolls In Their Prime.......2006-07-05

I officially became a Goo fan when I was 12 and got their CD "Dizzy Up the Girl". I stil remember the moment, driving down 141 with my dad to get a frosty. Johnny's single "I'm Still Here" came on and I told my dad I loved the song. He looked surprised and excited. "That's the Goo Goo Dolls!" My dad was a GGD fanatic and was always talking about them. He started describing all of their other hit singles to me and it turns out I loved them all, I just never knew they were by the same band. That summer we saw them in concert twice.

The second CD I got was A Boy Named Goo, a gift from my dad. I listened to it once, maybe twice and decided I didn't like it. That was when I was 12, my favorite song was "Iris", and I couldn't stand Robby. I'm 16 now and believe that CD may be their best yet. They started off as a goofy punk band with songs like "Up Yours": very immature, bad lyrics, bad music. With each album they've released, they've become more and more mainstream. Their cover single "Give A Little Bit" may be the most mainstream song I've ever heard, period. As much as I dislike grunge punk stuff, I hate really mainstream stuff. This album and A Boy Named Goo are perfectly in between. They've still got the hard guitar, but they've matured and become more serious. Well, Johnny has. That's why I don't hate Robby anymore. In their most recent albums, he offers a hard-rock break from Johnny's mainstream cheesy ballads.

My two favorite Goo songs are "Flat Top" and "On the Lie". "On the Lie" can be found on this album and "Flat Top" on A Boy Named Goo. For any real fan of GGD who appreciates them better than I did when I was twelve, these two albums are must haves.

p.s. I meant to give them 5 stars but it won't let me change my rating now.

If Car Wash looks and feels like a 97-minute music video, there's good reason for it. Lacking anything resembling a workable script, screenwriter Joel Schumacher (yes, him--funny how things don't change, isn't it?) enlisted Motown veteran Norman Whitfield to compose a batch of songs that would, in effect, "drive" the film. It's clear from the finished film that Schumacher never overcame his writer's block, but Whitfield more than met his end of the bargain, compiling a soundtrack that yielded three top 10 singles, and a musical oeuvre that Rose Royce is still milking to this day. Car Wash succeeds by way of its mass appeal. Whitfield forwent the parochial, if classic, Motown Sound, and incorporated elements of rock, disco, and blaxploitation-esque incidental music, resulting in a meaty--and marketable--party record. Whitfield casts Rose Royce as the new Sly and the Family Stone, and though they don't quite fill those shoes, it's a blast to hear them try. --Matt Hanks

5 out of 5 stars Childhood memories.......2004-12-14

This album gives me wonderful childhood memories. I remember being in my basement alteranting between the Car Wash soundtrack and C.W. McCall's _Black Bear Road_. (Talk about diversity as a 6-10 year old).
The funk and R&B beats are fantastic. The band, Rose Royce, was put together as an allstar band exemplifying this time period in music.
Thr grooves are unstoppable. You gotta love the simple yet complex vocal harmonies in "Zig Zag."
"Car Wash" may be sometimes overplayed on the radio and at sporting events, but it remains a staple of this era.
"Daddy Rich" is good only if you remember the movie and its plot. (I can't say that I do.)
"put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is" has an awesome horn riff...as do most of these tracks.
That's what made my saxophone playing in a horn section so much fun (playing songs like "Brickhouse" and "Jungle Boogie").
There are even powerful vocal songs and soulful belt-outs like in "I'm Going Down."
Gotta love the wa-wa guitar and horn parts in the instrumentals.
Enough of my babbling...just get it, listen, enjoy, and get your groove on.

5 out of 5 stars I wanna get next to you.......2002-07-22

love this plus that movie still a fan this brings back good memories every song on here jams and mostly it's instrumentals but hey I'm an old school funk fan and plus original funkadelics eddie hazel, and billy bass nelson held the whole groove down that's why this soundtrack is helluva funkdafied fire a classic every song on here is a classic and far from disco which sadly is a category rose royce fell under in later years.

4 out of 5 stars will take you home.......2001-09-02

did you ever work a hard job for little pay? love someone you just couldn't reach? well this music comes from a film that will take you home. rose royce really hits t on the mark. my review is as much about the film car wash as it is the music. you may have to be over 40 to understand, but if you have ever been there, hated it, but wouoldn't trade the experience for any $$ this is the music and film for you

5 out of 5 stars In full bloom !.......2001-04-26

If you have ever seen the film Car Wash, you will remember the importance of the soundtrack. I personally saw the film again on T.V. not too long ago, and when I found this cd was available, I simply ordered it (I had bought a long time ago the LP version, which only had 10 tracks).

This can be counted as one of the great soundtracks of that era, together with others such as "Superfly", "Shaft" or "Saturday Night Fever". The more recent "Jackie Brown" goes in the same direction actually. But, the originality of this one is that the whole soundtrack was apparently recorded BEFORE the shooting of the film (the songs were really playing while the film was shot, and the actors seem to have the time of their life), and that the band was made up by Norman Whitfield especially for this recording. The songs were so great and the band was so successful that it went on to record more albums and competed on the charts with CHIC. In fact, I can tell you the film was shown everywhere in Europe and that "Car wash" and the ballad "I wanna get next to you" were played all over the world... Not bad for what some would call a low budget film with a made up band playing in the background.

This really is a recommendable cd because of the story behind it, because of the sound (typical of that time), and because you have more than the two star tracks ("Zig Zag" and "Water" are super instrumentals, "Yoyo" is a lot of fun, the Ohio Players like "Born to love you" should have gotten the same recognition as the title track, and the musical scene - "Daddy rich/you gotta believe"- with Richard Pryor and the Pointer Sisters is extraordinary).

Car wash, ladies and gentlemen, a must have from a band and a producer (Norman Whitfield) in full bloom at that time !

4 out of 5 stars Good Disc.......2000-03-31

5 out of 5 stars Detroit Funk.......2007-02-27

The Howling Diablos contains aspects of Southern Rock early ZZ top and funk beat almost James Brown style. The music is very thicky blended with harmonica, sax, dual guitar and bass and drum. They give a true Detroit sound to the music. I would call it a funky Dirtbombs although Mick has nothing on these guys.

3 out of 5 stars +1/2 -- Gritty blues from Detroit.......2005-09-14

This Detroit quintet serves up gritty electric bar blues, adding a funky edge to a style derived from Albert Collins, Steve Ray Vaughn, and others. Their second album features a solid rhythm section, with Shannon Boone's drums mixed favorably hot - it gives the album the sort of punch you'd expect to hear in a club setting. Mike Smith's guitar and Johnny Evans' harp and sax each provide memorable riffs and solos, and vocalist Tino Gross sings with both swagger and grit. Howling devils, indeed! 3-1/2 stars, if allowed fractional ratings. [©2005 redtunictroll at hotmail dot com]

5 out of 5 stars Just so much fun!.......2001-01-18

I had the pleasure of seeing this show at the now out-of-business Manny's Car Wash in New York. These guys ROCKED! Hiram's singing is kind of like a charming after thought to a top trio of New York musicians. Clearly Hiram is an amazing guitar player -- especially live. His long standing, playful musical relationship with Will Lee really comes through on these tracks. Lee, of course, is arguably the finest bass player recording today. (Watching them jump up and down on stage is a must see). Add to this Clint Deganon's powerhouse drumming -- this guy is an animal on stage -- which matches Hiram and Will's energy to a T, and you've got perfection. BTW, this is definitely not a blues album. High powered R&B/Rock.

5 out of 5 stars Cool guitar jazz/rock........2000-09-04

The originals are nice, but the covers rock. Al Green, Stevie Wonder, Beatles, Hendrix, Marley. Special treat is the unheardof seque from "Can't Find My Way Home" into "Dear Prudence". Very tasty. Speaking of tasty, "Bean Burrito" will give you more giggles than a baby with gas.

5 out of 5 stars Hiram Rules.......1999-12-10

What can you say about Hiram Bullock. He is clearly one of our most gifted musicians. It was a treat to see him play at Mannys Carwash, now closed (bahhh!)I didnt see this birthday show, but the CD is great. Hiram is probably best live. But all of his music is fantastic. It transports you away. And the band is great. Will Lee on bass and Clint Degannon. Hard to belieive its a trio.

But it, dream it, be it.

5 out of 5 stars Another great and funny blues stringer!!! What a show..........1998-10-19

This show kick ass!!! Hiram is a great blues & jazz player... He made new takes from manny classics blues songs. His band is great too. You have to check the bean burrito solo, it kill... So if you are looking for a great blues cd you found... ps. It was recorded alive in manny's car wash (ny) one of the best place in the world to fell the blues... enjoy!!!

5 out of 5 stars Hot.......2006-03-02

This song is hot. Don't listen to the other reviews. Missy blows this track away, and so does Christina. It's a very catchy song. It's well worth it. Buy the soundtrack, which I have by the way.

1 out of 5 stars car wash used to be my favorite song.......2006-03-01

christina aguilera should be banned from covering old funk tunes like car wash she messed up the whole song but hey anything for money these days and missy elliot's pretty much doing anything these days to stay paid even producing trash like this I hope rose rouce got paid for this.

1 out of 5 stars An absolute career low for everyone involved........2006-02-12

Make no mistake about it, as hot as Christina is, she's made some dreadful records in the past. The self-indulgent syrup of "I Turn To You" (worryingly already releasing overblown mush on her first album), the unconvincing "hey, I'm down with The Coloureds" strop of "Can't Hold Us Down" and that song with Ricky Martin where she looked like a more plastic Malibu Stacy. Still, nothing can compare to the sheer horror of THIS horrendous piece of plastic.

Yes, Car Wash, the song pretty much everyone knows, and certainly one no-one wants to hear again. Given a by-the-numbers, "will this do?" cover by Christina, and the biggest, one-trick pony in hip hop - Missy Elliot. Once considered ground breaking, (and that was just her weight), she's now decided to be seen with every meal-ticket going, adding her (lack of) charm to the likes of Ciara. How this women gets away with the drivel she puts out is simply beyond me.

Anyway, this song. It's lazy. It's cynical. It's boring. Hell, even Christina sounds bored. It's the soundtrack to singers counting the money and reading the lyric sheet in front of them. Worst of all, it was for that laughter vaccum of a movie "Shark Tale". So, uh, why would there be a car wash underwater? Abysmal.

This is one of those tracks that everyone can party to - ridiculous words that just get stuck in your head (but not as ridiculous as say - the macarena - when that gets stuck in your head AAARRRRGGGH!). Originally a disco track remixed for 1998. And remixed well. I hear it in the clubs quite often. Fun, Fun, Fun! 4/5

Great blues guitar, great songs with a touch of gospel and a great LIVE vibe to the whole cd. RHETT obviously loves what he does and his enthusiasm is infectuous. He'll reel you in and make you a fan. By the 2nd disc you should be a TYLER devote. Great electric blues with heaps of feeling.

5 out of 5 stars The Real Stuff.......2002-09-17

Rhett Tyler just rips. Plain and simple, this CD delivers 110% pure blues energy. Tyler's as good as any in the studio, but when he's playing for a live audience, a whole new set of gears seems to magically appear on the shift handle. Those of us who love the blues will miss NYC's legendary Manny's Carwash, but Rhett Tyler gave it one hell of a send-off!
