Although Robert Preston and Barbara Cook put in stellar performances, it's the music that's the star of this hugely successful document of the 1958 Broadway smash. Written entirely by Meredith Willson, it drew from memories of his childhood in a small Midwestern town. Preston plays a traveling salesman/con artist, while Cook is the dull spinster "Marian the Librarian," whose love for Preston's character makes her come alive. "Seventy-Six Trombones" has become a marching band standard, while "Ya Got Trouble" (featuring dizzying fast-talk from Preston) and "'Til There Was You" (with a gorgeous vocal from Cook) remain well known even among those who have never seen the show. The latter was also a favorite of the Beatles, who covered it on their first album. --Dawn Eden
Customer Reviews:
Music Man.......2007-02-09
The original cast recording brings back the memory of the live production I saw which will always be superior, in my opinion, to the movie version. However, the movie was one of the better "reproductions" of this genre.
One of This Country's Finest Musicals Beautifully Re-Mastered.......2006-11-23
THE MUSIC MAN opened on Broadway on December 19, 1957 to rave reviews from the critics, adulations from the captivated audiences, and the beginning of a long run. This wondrous musical is an 'opera' of sorts in that the piece is not a series of songs connected by the usual musical comedy spoken dialogue. Meredith Willson wrote the music and lyrics in such a way that there is not an extraneous note or word that doesn't contribute to the totality of the work.
Despite the multiple reincarnations of this brilliant show both on film and recording, none of them compares to this original cast. Imagine Barbara Cook (lithe, and new) as Marian the Librarian: Cook still reigns as one of our finest voices on the stage and cabaret rooms today. Robert Preston is not only rich in personality he also delivers the immensely complex patter songs with deft authority. And the Buffalo Bills add the multiple barbershop quartet numbers with authentic sound and professionalism.
This musical holds all of the joys and imaginations and longings that we all hold so dear in our memories of how things used to be - and it is so terrific to return to that stage of ecstasy again. This is a must own CD. Grady Harp, November 06
We need a new remaster, nonetheless.......2006-10-22
A very interesting photo on the liner booklet's back cover demonstrates the one real flaw in this otherwise classic recording: it shows Robert Preston at the album sessions singing at two mikes, a fat Neumann with a Capitol flag and a skinny one, probably an AKG. This can only mean Capitol recorded this in simultaneous mono and stereo takes. With all that knob twiddling the balance had to go off, a problem not entirely corrected by the reissue engineer Bob Norberg, whose remasterings of Ol' Blue's Capitol mono output have earned scorn from some Sinatraphiles for their slight fake echo and stereo effects. (He remastered just about every album in the Broadway Angel series; the monos all appear to have the echo and stereo.) I guess we should be happy to have this in any form at all given how the other majors turned it down. Capitol was late and indifferent to the cast album trade, and it only had three hits before making its monumental closing botch of "Follies." However the label approached it it's still a great and exciting score perfectly performed. Who could have imagined a hit musical with a barbershop quartet? And if only all women could sing like Barbara Cook! Who says you can have too much of a good thing?
With the show's fiftieth anniversary coming up (!) now would be a good time for a remaster. (I know, I know, I'm tired of paying repeatedly for the same product too, but this deserves it.) It should include a second disc with the 1959 Capitol documentary LP "And Then I Wrote 'The Music Man'", where Meredith Willson and his wife Rini detail the eight years of trials and rewrites behind the show. Nor would it hurt to have bonuses like Willson's original take on "Till There Was You" (called "Till I Met You," which Fran Warren evidently first sang on "The Big Show") or a few licensed pop balladeers of the day -- and maybe examples like the 70s jingle for the late lamented Oldsmobile ("Oh ho the new Oldsmobile is a -- comin' down the line...."). It must also include Willson's contentious JFK physical fitness tune "Chicken Fat", recorded about the time "The Music Man" was filmed and available only on oddball Web music sites, where Preston yells and grunts himself into an athletic -- passion. (I keep thinking Allan Sherman recorded a full version of his notorious parody "76 Sol Cohens", but I guess he didn't.) The whole thing should end with a live public-radio performance from 1980 or 1981 where Willson led the superb Detroit Concert Band in "76 Trombones" and "The Stars and Stripes Forever" -- an apt and brilliant finish.
No, I have not forgotten the Beatles, but I fear neither have their lawyers.
Accept no substitutes!.......2006-08-22
This the best version of "The Music Man" available, especially if you're looking for the Broadway cast. The performances here are all terrific, the recording and mastering are great, and the liner notes are informative and thorough. "The Music Man" is available in several other versions and forms, including other releases of the same original cast recording, but without the good mastering or liner notes found here. My wife and I, hoping to listen to this great show with our kids, first purchased other versions that were easier to find (e.g., on iTunes) and those were major disappointments. Buy this CD (Broadway Classics from Angel) and accept no substitutes.
Preston and Cook are the best ever.......2006-07-15
Yes, the film is a delight, and Shirley Jones is certainly good as Marian. But the original cast album of this wonderful musical remains the best version ever, mostly thanks to Barbara Cook, whose voice was and remains a miracle of rare device to listen to.
For years I thought I was the only person who was in love with her voice, wearing out vinyl LPs of this musical with replaying. Then, in the early 80s I saw Cook in a one woman show in London, and discovered I was part of a fanatical following! The other reviews here on Amazon confirm the truth: there is only one truly great Marian, Madam Librarian.
Watch the movie, which is a terrific adaptation of the stage show, go to professional and amateur revivals of the musical, but buy this recording of the score for repeated listening. There is nothing better.

A disappointment.......2005-02-11
The Buffalo Bills are arguably the best barbershop quartet of all time. Unfortunately, this CD does not offer much to support the above assertion. Because it is less than a half hour in length and of mediocre sound quality, "Barbershop Harmony Time" does not do justice to the impressive sounds of either the Buffalo Bills or the Chordettes. For better performances from the Buffalo Bills, you may want to consider the soundtrack from the 1962 version of "The Music Man". For better performances from the Chordettes, you should definitely check out their "25 All-Time Greatest Recordings".
Great Collection of Two Giants in the Genre.......2004-03-01
I recently discovered how much I liked barbershop music and decided to add some barbershop CD to my collection. One of the first names I had recommended to me was the Buffalo Bills. So I got this CD featuring them and The Chordettes.
From what I know of barbershop, this contains several standards of the genre. Unfortunately, I didn't like the version of "Down by the Old Mill Stream" presented here.
The other tracks are wonderful, however ranging from the upbeat "Angry" to the slower "I Believe." The Buffalo Bills are joined by instruments on "If I could be with You One Hour Tonight" and "Fit as a Fiddle." And I love their rendition of "As Time Goes By."
The other drawback to this CD is that it's only 24 minutes long. As a result, it's quite easy to wear it out after a few listens. Still, it was money well spent and a good introduction to two giants in the barbershop genre from days gone by.
A great collection of traditional barbershop harmony!.......1998-09-16
The Buffalo Bills and the Chordettes are two of the all-time great barbershop quartets. If you like barbershop harmony, and who doesn't, you'll love this CD. The harmony is close and tight. Sweet Adeline is presented with Arthur Godfrey singing lead and the Chordettes singing backup. Great!!
A Breath-taking wonder.......1998-07-04
This CD compromises great fast and slow numbers from the two most popular barbershop quartets (or is it quartettes?) of all time. I feel that this Cd shows the sheer power of a cappella voices and sweet, sweet harmony. The songs stick in your head ( a good thing). Down AMong the SHeltering Palms is absolutely "breath-taking"

slept on rapper.......2006-08-04
I first got into pos k on brand nubians 1st album when he did a wicked duet with puba. There are 5 or 6 good songs on this cd and i dont know how that didnt warrant a 2nd cd. This got mad airplay on Tim Westwoods capital rap show. Unfortunately this was his first and last release. I like his lyrics, upbeat, and as his name suggests, positive. 1992 has to be one of the best years for hiphop surely!
excuse me Miss, what your man gotta do with me.......2003-05-01
I first got into Pos, back in the day when he got down with MC Ltye with the excuse miss joint, he had a decent flow, nice skills and when his solo joint dropped I had to scoop it up I gave this album 3 stars because the remixes that came out after the release were on point. (car hoppers and nightshift) featuring Big daddy kane are worth it alone. I'd recommend this to any real hip hop fan, at discount prices though.

Album Description
"Let Em Run" secures The Bills' place as one of the most dynamic and talented acts on the North American and Western European roots music scene. Formerly known as The Bill Hilly Band, the Juno Award (Canada Grammy) nominated ensemble is comprised of Marc Atkinson (mandolin), Chris Frye (lead vocals, guitar), Adrian Dolan (accordion, fiddle, piano), Glen Manders (double-bass) and Jeremy Penner (fiddle).
Drawing inspiration from all over the world, "Let Em Run" is a witch's brew and fusion of bluegrass, jazz, ragtime, Latin American and Gypsy influences with a sound all its own. The opening "Overture" gives a theatrical snapshot of the many musical styles of "Let Em Run." From the bluegrass-inspired "Hello" to the haunting instrumental "When the Bucket Runs Dry" to the several inventive songs written by Chris Frye, the Bills display both tight vocal arrangements and fierce virtuosic instrumentals. They transcend musical boundaries with such ease and fluidity that it is easy to see why the band is creating a buzz across such a broad spectrum of music fans. This is their finest work.
Customer Reviews:
Stunning, moving.......2007-07-24
I was listening to internet radio - Pandora - when I heard "When The Bucket Runs Dry" - a kind of hypnotic tango with a bass line that sounds like happy thunder - felt like a spring shower... so off to Amazon to buy the album and see if my luck would hold, a gamble that paid off handsomely...
"THE BILLS" album has become, like an earlier reviewer said, one of my most favorite albums.
Great range and feel, outstanding musicianship and voices, composition is often like something from another era - craftsmanship that resonates after each listen.
A Perfect Album! I look forward to their next effort - C'MON BILLS!
You got a get up and move with this one,.......2005-11-19
This is a great CD from a fabulous band. I just saw them in concert at the Riverhawk Festival in Florida, their dynamic playing style comes through on the CD. This is now one of my top five CD's of all time.
Diverse music done very well.......2005-07-20
There's a lot of styles here, ranging from bluegrassy to sea chantey, and they all come off very well. It's hard not to like any group that manages to use "insouciance" in the lyrics. It's honest, amusing music that is well played.
This Disc Will Make You Happy!.......2005-06-18
The Bills are such a great group of musicians. I recently saw them at a folk and bluegrass festival (The Bills fell under the folk category) and they were great. I wasn't familiar with them before their performance, but I wanted to be afterwards. I bought this after the show and it is a great representation of their live sound. From the rollicking "Hello" to the solemn "Which Way Away" to the very catchy title track, this album is diverse without losing focus. This disc simply makes me happy, and I hope it does the same for you. Check this out and check out their previous album 'All Day Every Day', under their former name The Bill Hilly Band. "The Bills" was kind of their nickname, until they officially changed it to simply "The Bills". A good change, in my opinion.

Great Album!.......2006-08-15
After seeing Earl Thomas live at the Montreux Jazz Festival 2006, It was a must to go and buy his CD's.
Earl Thomas - Intersection, is a great album, with a lot well-known covers, excellent mix of blues, soul, jazz, and gospel! Earl Thomas' voice is amazing - never seen something like this before. His live shows are extraordinary and remarkable.
A must for all modern soul lovers!
Only Al Green can do this.......2005-08-25
This guy seems to switch producers and labels too often for 4 albums sparsed on some 5 to 10 year period. Label remained from last time, but Ike Turner's intro reads like here's a surefire talent -- and Ike, its usher. Well, that sort of inaptness and the overall dull first-timer face design should deter you from buying it. I overcame the hunch and bought. I was rewarded by exquisite sound of soul music like it were another recent Al Green helping. Producer and hornists aren't known but sound every bit pro and seasoned. It's genuine true-to-pattern soul, nothing doing. The only gleech I find is in intoning phrases. Mr Thomas kinda wavers instead of keeping firm and macho, you know. Like he were zobified by a Backstreet Boy or someone of nu r'n'b.
Earl rocks!.......2005-07-24
I've been listening to and going to see Earl Thomas play since the early '90s. This is definitely one of his better albums though the others are all good too. "Workin' Together" is a really good on this album, but if you really want to experience it, go see him live!

overrated and stupid.......2007-05-08
1) The second half of their songs are just repetition of the same crappy lyrics over and over. Some of the song just really falls apart and loses rhythm and doesn't pace well.
2) These songs aren't about independent women--they are about stupid women. Wow, she is finally speaking up after her "man" uses her cell, racks up her credit card bills, uses her car, borrows her money....
3) It doesn't solve any problems.
Can you pay my bills
Can you pay my telephone bills
Can you pay my automo-bills
Baby, if you do then maybe we can chill
If you paid my bills, we could chill. What does that even mean!!! That's so stupid! I, of course, respect the fact that they are saying the man is the gold digger, but this is just displacing the problem, not making them equals. ...If you paid all my bills, we could chill.
Lame.
Good Dance Beat.......2004-07-03
I'm no Destiny fan, but this song is da bomb. Even now in 2004, it still makes me wanna move. They possibly lucked out on this one, coming up with a real, deep groove that is just live!

Great song.......1999-12-14
I disagree that this song is about gold digging tramps. If you listen to the words, you hear that they want the guy to pay the bills that HE racks up using her credit card and cell phone, etc. Its the guy thats the gold digger.

Customer Reviews:
A Great Listening Pleasure.......2006-11-17
Kurt brings the kind of vocal savvy that Tony Bennett has been blessing us with for decades. It's rare to find this kind of talent several generations down the line. And the musicianship is a delight to hear--the arrangements are clean and supportive, the horn work is fine, and the drums take me back to the sounds of guitarist Charlie Byrd! A very worthwhile buy.
Sucker for sentiment.......2006-08-09
Loved the music - the vocals are smooth and friendly, the *other* musicians (how cool - his big brother and his dad!!) really put their heart and soul into backing Kurt up. The songs are cool and sweet, kind of like sitting down with a friend and hearing him talk about his new love.
Three Reichenbach's and an upright bass.......2006-08-01
It seemed like it was somewhere around 11pm in the Oak Room... Kurt's warm voice backed up by his father's crisp drums and Bill's always excellent arrangements and performance on bass trumpet and trombones. More than just the Three Reichenbachs, this album features some old standards done up in a new way.
So grab your `special one', sit around a too-small table, and pay way to much for your food as you listen to a cabaret-style performance you won't soon forget. This one has earned a special place in the CD stack of stuff.
Thanks, Kurt!
I LOVE this refreshing album.......2006-07-06
This album is a combination of old romantic classics such as Sinatra's "Come Dance With Me", and fun songs like "I Like You". While this is Kurt's debut album, the supporting artists are established jazz musicians and include his father William Reichenbach, Sr. and brother William Jr. All of the songs are great, and for different reasons. There are the slow romantic songs that you can imagine slow dancing and romancing to. And then, when you are not expecting it, the romps "I Like You" and "Flexible" change the mood.
Textured Silk.......2006-06-29
Kurt Reichenbach's voice slides into a room like textured silk; at once mellow, smooth, and romantic. Light the fire, pour the red, and play the music.
