5 out of 5 stars exceptional .......2007-05-28

Tears For Fears is an honest and poetic band bar none. The writers are skilled, well-intentioned, and know how to produce and arrange a full, multi-satisfying genre of music in their own right. Only bands like the Beatles and Seal have been able to compel me in so much with their well-produced, orchestral talent.

Needless to say I would recommend this band and especially, this album to move a spirited thirst for those who appreciate excellent writing, rich vocals, and lyrics that capture all of a listeners soul.

5 out of 5 stars Should be 6 stars.......2007-05-07

This is probably one of the best sounding albums of all time, Tears were
at their peak in the studio and boy it shows.

5 out of 5 stars The Return of TFF After 4 Years .......2007-03-12

The Seeds of Love album was the long awaited return of TFF after a long hiatus after their biggest commercial record, Songs From the BIg Chair. It was a big departure from the heavily synth sound they had on their previous releases. It is definitely more guitar based and the songs are more toned down in the electro-synth sound that they are known for.
There are only 8 tracks on this album due to the on going turmoil the band was going through at that time. Roland Orzabal was going through a period of his best work producing and maybe over producing the songs..and Curt Smith was just waiting and waiting. Curt`s contribution to this album was very small and left the band after the following tour of this album.
Woman in Chains...Wow !!! the best TFF song ever. Roland`s production fairlighting is amazing. Just put on a set of headphones and this song will take you away into another realm. Oleta Adams..the female voice on this song is find Roland and Curt discovered in an Atlanta night club. She has since enjoyed a nice career of her own...remember "Get Here" the song that was heavily played for the troops by their wives in the first gulf war??? That was Oleta`s song. Also the beautiful fretless basswork of the great Pino Palladino gives this song a wonderful tone throughout (where`s Curt? ).
Sowing the Seeds of Love is their most Sgt. Pepper sounding effort and is a great song in its own right. The rest of the tracks are all pretty good if you`re a TFF fan. Roland`s vocals are always great as always and Curt`s only song Advise for the Young at Heart is his last song to sing lead..from TFF.
All these songs are accompanied with awesome videos..if you can get them, they are nice to add to your collection.

4 out of 5 stars Long Songs But Very Enjoyable Songs.......2007-02-21

Like With Their album SONGS FROM THE BIG CHAIR, This album
by Tears For Fears, SEEDS OF LOVE, is also made up of an album of
8 songs that are long. Some are 6 minutes long, one is 8.
The average length is at least 4 minutes. Some of the long songs
may be frustrating to listen to because of their length, but if you
give them a chance and listen to them over and over, they grow on you.
I also felt this way about alot of THE DOORS long songs like THE END
and WHEN THE MUSICS OVER.
Anyway, I bought this album because I love the song SEEDS OF LOVE.
I also discovered new favorite songs like WOMAN IN CHAINS. Great tune.
I also liked the song ADVICE FOR THE YOUNG AT HEART. Great chords and melody. BADMANS SONG is a cool tune too, but again you may get restless
due to its length. YEAR OF THE KNIFE Is decent. FAMOUS LAST WORDS is
boring and tedious. SWORDS AND KNIVES is average. STANDING AT THE
CORNER OF THE THIRD WORLD is decent. There are also bonus tracks on this
album. ALWAYS IN THE PAST is a great rocker.
In my opinion, this album is pretty good. Again, it took a few listens to get me hooked on some of the songs, and like I said before,
one can get restless sitting through some songs due to their length.
But the album grew on me after a few listens. If you are a casual TEARS
FOR FEARS listener, I would start my collection of their music by either
buying SONGS FROM THE BIG CHAIR or one of their BEST OF CD's. Only by
SEEDS OF LOVE if you have establised that you love SONGS FROM THE BIG CHAIR.
Amazon sent me this cd in great condition, unlike SONGS FROM THE
BIG CHAIR which had a HUGE and long scratch on the front cover of the cd.
Luckily I had an extra CD cover, so I changed the cover and put the good
one on SONGS FROM THE BIG CHAIR.

2 out of 5 stars A Disapointment for Synth Fans.......2007-02-20

Out of the trio of albums Tears for Fears completed in 80's before they split, 'Seeds of Love' stands out to me as by far the weakest. TFF started out in 'The Hurting' as a synth band comparable to Depeche Mode or New Order, and while they were always making pop music, the instrumentation they used provided a unique, creative, and interesting sound. While the singles from Songs from the Big Chair were huge pop hits, TFF continued to create interesting sounds via a combination of synths, samples, and real instruments. Songs on that album like "Listen", "The Big Chair", and "Empire Building" were instrumentals and blatantly abandoned radio-friendliness in favor of creativity.

In 'Seeds of Love', the dark lyrics and interesting synth sounds that defined Tears for Fears seem completely absent. By comparison to their previous albums, Seeds of Love feels like "easy listening". TFF touches on some interesting beats in a few songs, but these introductions quickly give way to cheesy, traditional, over-produced pop sounds.

The album's title track, "Sowing the Seeds of Love", summarizes in one song the entire direction of the album (as compared to TFF's previous work) quite accurately. Listen to this song; if you enjoy its' uncomplicated traditional pop quality, then you may well like the whole album. However, if you're like me and "Sowing the Seeds of Love" strikes you as too poppy, too cheesy, and lacking the interesting sounds that made other TFF tracks enjoyable, then don't buy the album; the rest is just as bad, albeit less catchy.

If you ask me, 'Elemental', the first album made after the break up, sounds like a more appropriate follow-up to 'Songs from the Big Chair' and 'The Hurting' than 'The Seeds of Love.'

Ten or so albums into their careers, if not sooner, artists tend to subside into laziness, self-parody, or fruitless second-guessing of the musical climate. It is entirely in keeping with Cave's willful obstinate character that at roughly that point he started making his very best work. Let Love In is a masterpiece. It sounds both like a summation of everything Cave and his peerless band the Bad Seeds have ever done well--string-laden ballads; gothic blues; brooding, gospel-tinged rock & roll--and is a cohesive collection in its own right. "Do You Love Me?" might even be the single best thing Cave and the Bad Seeds have ever come up with: here he's passionate, literate, and funny; they are muscular, sensitive, and menacing. --Andrew Mueller

5 out of 5 stars Let Nick In.......2006-03-29

This album is just amazing. But I must warn you. If you are a little down, you girlfriend leave you, or the the day is too rainy, well, maybe you don't need to list this particular album.
But, in the other hand, if the sun is shinning, well enjoy. Nick Cave use the words (and his voice) to took you into the deep of human soul, and is a very ugly place. Specially "Do you love. Part 2", when he describe a taxi-boy, is so cruel, and at the same time so human. But is not only the lyrics. The musicians are truly artists, like Blixa (guitar) and Mike Harvey. Loverman and Red Right Hand are an exemple of that. It is one of the Cave's greatest album

5 out of 5 stars Musical and Emotional Roller Coaster . . . one of the best.......2004-10-19

One of Nick's best. This is one of my favorite albums by anyone and therefore, one of my favorite by Mr. Cave. Opening and closing the album by asking the question "Do you love me?" gives chilling perspective into what this album is supposed to mean. From the deceptive delicacy of "Nobody's baby now" to the rage of "Red Right Hand" Cave takes us on a roller coaster of emotions and his unique voice and style never fail to entertain . . . and perplex. A true gem of the 90's.

5 out of 5 stars One of the greatest albums every, by anyone.......2004-06-13

Once in a blue moon, I feel absolutely compelled to review an album, simply because it has recently absolutely blown my mind. This is one such record. As much as I love the Birthday Party, and several other Cave output, this may be the single greatest album that I've heard with his name attached. "Nobody's Baby Now" is so good it almost hurts, and I don't care who the hell has covered "Loverman" (including Metallica), there's no topping the version included herein. Once you add in masterpieces like "Do You Love Me" and "Thirsty Dog," along with the supernal "Red Right Hand," there is barely a chance of topping this record. In terms of consistency alone, it's one of the greatest albums I've ever heard. If you have any curiousity about the work of Cave, with the BP or the BS, you absolutely MUST check this album out first. If ever there was a record that will lead you to pursue other records in an artist's catalogue, this is the one. Simply put, this is brilliant beyond words. I've studied the holy books, and this album will put you closer to "the truth" than most of them.

5 out of 5 stars A hard listen, but one worth the effort.......2004-01-25

On 'Let Love In', Cave creates a pretty horrific 'anti-love' kind of mood - from the subtle cruelty of 'Nobody's Baby Now', to the demonic fury of 'Loverman', to the chilling pedophile in 'Do You Love Me (Part II)'. These are some really good songs that don't shy away from heavy themes, and in truth it is a relentlessly melancholic, violent album. The classic 'Do You Love Me' could be interpreted as the song of a brutal rapist, and the frantic 'Jangling Jack' is a pretty wrenching tale.

But that doesn't mean it's a bad album; rather, it's a d**n good one. It's hard-hitting, powerful and reveals all its charms and nuances after multiple listens. Cave comes through as a master songwriter and balladeer. This is top notch work.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favs.......2003-12-19

Oh, Nick, I thank thee for what you recorded! I'd kill for 'Loverman', 'Red right hand (this memorable bass guitar line)', 'I let love in' and 'Lay me low'. These songs are nothing very innovative but anyway precious gems not only for Cave's fans. If you didn't like 'The first born is dead' etc. you may give Nick a second chance - he's more 'edible' now, but nevertheless fantastic, and singing unforgettable things, with his dark humour, and well-known deviations. As for music, it's almost an album to be played on the radio, as for lyrics, I'd never let my little child listen to the radio if I knew Nick was there. No drawbacks, as for this album, a complete masterpiece

5 out of 5 stars All Gems.......2002-12-24

I found this album by accident. I saw a cassette in a discount bin while on vacation in New Zealand and picked it up for some music in my rental car. I did not know who Tears for Fears was.

I was astonished to find out how good this group is. From the beginning to the end, it is a consistent collection of powerful, punchy ballads, colorful arrangements, and memorable lyrics. 'Advice for the Young at Heart' can still give me goosebumps and 'Famous Last Words' bring a tear to my eye. And I love the energy of 'Year of The Knife'. The songs are written with talent and insight and performed to a high standard.

The mark of a good recording is that one doesn't tire of it. This one seems almost as fresh as the day I bought it.

5 out of 5 stars A Remarkable Album.......2002-12-07

The underlying theme of this album is society issues and attitudes - using music as a healing balm for humanity - a very deliberate attempt..which succeeds remarkably well. In true 'Tears for Fears' style.

'Woman in chains' is a brilliant beginning. Very soothing, it sets a pace which is ideal, and gets you thirsting for more.

'Look at your self/See all your life/your hands start shaking/and you dont know why' is a line from 'Badman's Song' which got my hands trembling, shaking all over. Oleta Adams is amazing and the piano is superb.

'Advice for the young at heart' sounds more commercial, but the theme meshes well and gives the album variety.

'Sowing the seeds of love' the title song has an energetic and racy feel, full of enthusiasm and light-hearted goodness.

Third world sentiments are discussed in 'Standing on the corner of the third world'. I was transported, endorphins flowing fast through my veins. Same story with 'Swords and Knives' with lyrics like - 'When life begins/ with needles and pins / it ends with swords and knives'. Very satisfying.

'Famous last words' ends the album on a tender note.

The music is top class, a mixture of everything. It truly deserves every one of the five stars I have granted it.

5 out of 5 stars The album of 1980's.......2002-12-06

I will put it simply: this is by far the best pop album of (at least) the 1980's at all fronts. Many may disagree, many may doubt it, but that's all they can do about it. It's just a fact. TFF is not my no. 1 band (they were at a time), but this one even beats Simple Minds' Street Fighting Years and Michael Jackson's Thriller. A stunning musical achievement. A masterpiece. A must have. Go for it.

5 out of 5 stars Seeds Of Love: Tears For Fears artistic pinnacle.......2002-08-15

Sure the excellent Songs From The Big Chair got better sales & more commercial success but one will definately agree with me that 1989 epic masterpiece The Seeds Of Love is TFF most creative & most consistant and is their masterpiece. To me there hasn't been a better period in music than mid to late 1989 with the Seeds Of Love & Janet Jacksons Rhythm Nation 1814 being the best music the best year for music. Sadly this would be the album that would tear apart the dynamic Orzabal/Smith duo for the next ten years after this.

The edition I'm reviewing is the older version without the bonus tracks.

Woman In Chains begins this CD with a heartbreaking melody and a more soulful sound with the then unknown Oleta Adams singing on backup vocals and what a singing duo! This is a song I think that is about the abuse of womens rights judging from reading the lyrics. Badmans Song brings us into more upbeat terrority with a far more upbeat track with lots of jazzy blues-rock influences which also features Oleta Adams on guest vocals. This track is 8 and a half minutes long. fans who are The Big Chair might find it difficult to enjoy this song but those who are open minded or more adventurous will definately love this song. The title track we've already heard before. It's a very beatle-esque song and is the most radio-friendly song on this CD and probably the only one that is. This is the only song that features Curt Smith on vocals. Advice For The Young At Heart is the winner on The Seeds Of Love. It's a very soulful song with deep lyrics and lots of organs and wash of guitar sways. The bridge in the middle of the song from 2:49 to 3:30 is my favorite part of the song with a much jazzier feel. Why this song failed to reach the top 40 is beyond me. Standing On The Corner Of The Third World starts off with Arab sounding flutes and strange sounding chimes and then becomes a mellow soul-oriented track. The song then blasts into a Gospel influenced track at the 2:48. The song mellows down but then speeds up again and kind of melts into a chaos of harmonicas and rock guitars before fading out. Swords & Knife starts off with wobbly keyboards and then becomes an upbeat track and finally morphs into an ambient rock track with awesome beats. The song ends with the wobbly keyboards and then ties us into the next track Year Of The Knife. Year Of The Knife is probably the closest the Seeds Of Love comes to sounding like The Big Chair but even then this is a far cry from that album. Year Of The Knife is similar to Sponges 1994 hit Plowed with an identical drum loop bur less grunge-influenced and has awesome chorus and incredible singing once again by Oleta Adams. After that we head into more melancholy territory with the eerie Famous Last Words. Famous Last Words starts off with a siren like intro and piano and then becomes a sort of classical oriented song. At the 2:24 mark the song blasts into a power ballad with incredible atmosphere. What awesome lyrics. Incredible emotions. Incredibly powerful song. The song calms down and with the siren like ambience returning and then the song ends with the air raid siren sounds fading out bringing this CD to a close.

This CD is absolutely stunning on all fronts.

Seeds Of Love is recommended but I say get the remastered edition with the four bonus tracks. The bonus tracks flow quite well with the original eight tracks.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

5 out of 5 stars One of the best CD's of 89.......2001-11-30

This is Tears For Fears third album. It is quite a departure from their first two albums, which were typical, but better than average, new wave pop from the early eighties. This album has a much more mature, rich and complex sound. It mixes soul, pop, jazz and straight ahead rock with bits of psychodelia thrown in.

For this album, the duo actually expands to a trio with the addition of Oleta Adams. She adds just as much to the sound as Orzabal and Smith. Her song writing, singing and keyboard playing are phenomenal.

Many critics and fans complained that it took too long for this third album to come out, and that it sounded too much like the Beatles. In concert, Curt Smith would introduce Sowing the Seeds of Love, with "It took us 4 years to make a new album and all we could come up with is this". After the song, they would break into All You Need Is Love.

This is one of those albums where every track is fantastic, except one. Advice for the Young At Heart is a horrible, sappy song. Even the title is painful to hear. Alot of people consider the break up Smith and Orzabal as the reason for the band to drop off in popularity. But, it was ill considered decision to release Advice For The Young At Heart as the second single from this album that caused the band to drop out of the limelight. When the single was released, album sales dropped like a rock. It's unfortunate that this songs sits in the track 4 position, and interrupts the flow of the album.

Note, the track order listed here is incorrect.

Album Description

The "Chronicles" box sets are specially selected original albums presented in a book-style long box. Each album was selected to symbolize a classic period for the artist. Each disc includes original CD booklet.

Titles in this set include: "The Hurting," "Songs From The Big Chair," and "The Seeds Of Love".

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great Synth-Pop Set- Terrible Packaging.......2005-08-17

The first three Tears For Fears albums are all quintessential 80's pop. That is to say, the singles are phenomenal, the album tracks have cool synth experimentation, but there are a few slow spots on each disc.

"The Hurting" is almost like a therapy session on record. Some of the lyrics may be a little too introspective, but the hooks more than make up for it. Mad World is an amazing song (follow it up with great cover version in "Donnie Darko") and Pale Shelter remains a sturdy single.

"Songs From the Big Chair" contains this group's biggest hits. Shout is almost like an ode to primal scream therapy, and Everybody Wants to Rule the World may be the best single of the entire decade. Head Over Heels turns out to be part of a pretty cool song suite. There is no filler on this album with the possible exception of track 8 (the instumental last track of the original album which just doesn't really seem to go anywhere).

"The Seeds of Love" start to drop the synth-pop vibe for more Beatles-like sounds and late 80's pop values (which these guys actually do quite well). The title track and Woman In Chains are the singles here, but my favorite is Standing On The Corner Of The Third World, featuring Manu Katche on drums and some really cool worldbeat sounds.

The packaging on this set is a bit of a problem. The CD's seem to have trouble holding in their spots, and I had to exchange this set because of strange warping on the second disc. My next copy still had a few strange warped marks on it, but at least it plays ok. Additionaly, while you do get the CD booklets, this set leaves out the back covers. This unfortunately makes putting these discs in normal CD cases less desirable, as well as robbing the owner of the back cover art. Still, this is a pretty cheap way of getting these albums remastered with bonus tracks (as separate purchases it would cost $45-60).

      Album Description

After one listen to The Voyces Planting Seeds Records' debut Kissing Like It's Love and you'll be hooked to their glowing tuneful style. The band echoes the sounds of pop music's past as well as its ever so fervent future. Principal songwriter Brian Wurschum creates the well-crafted pop song, recalling the mid 60's era of The Beatles, the folk rock of Simon & Garfunkel, and the 70's mini rock epics ala Pink Floyd. Their style maybe placed in a box and labeled anywhere from: Rock, Folk Rock, Acoustic Folk Rock, New York Folk, and everywhere in between. The sunny California shine of the title track 'Kissing Like It's Love' launches the groups long awaited LP with it's sugary sweet chorus. Whether blending funky pop, epic rockers or near psychedelia, Kissing Like It's Love collects ten tracks of pure pop heaven you're sure to fall for. The band was formed in 1999, with its origins in Southern California. Brian and company later moved east to New York City and was quickly embraced by the east villages' anti-folk scene. The Voyces have shared stages with acts as diverse as America, Cracker, and Regina Spektor among countless others. The Voyces have created an impressive catalog of music. Their first self released LP, 2003's The Angels Of Fun showcased their fine blend of folk rock and celestial harmonies. The acoustic gem 'Relate To Me' was featured on Jack Johnson's Motion Picture Soundtrack, Thicker Than Water (2003) furthering the groups worldwide fan base. They followed in 2004 with an appearance on Planting Seeds Records critically acclaimed collection Sunsets And Silhouettes, which also features amazing performances from Linda Draper, Camera Obscura, Mark Gardener (Ride) and Freeheat (Jim Reid and Ben Lurie of The Jesus & Mary Chain) among the 18 tracks. In 2006 the band contributed the song 'Poor Little Fool' to a loving tribute to rock legend and country rock pioneer Rick Nelson, titled Easy To Be Free: The Songs of Rick Nelson. The band also released Love Arcade in 2006 - a collection of the bands hits, demos, and fan favorites.

Even without his highly regarded symphonies, various instrumental works, and monumental and influential work on the revision of the English Hymnal, Vaughan Williams would have made a major impact on 20th-century music with his many original choral works and his folksong arrangements. In fact, Vaughan Williams's folksong-collecting work was one of the more important contributions ever made to English music. This disc offers a wonderful collection of a cappella choral pieces, including some of Vaughan Williams's finest folksong arrangements. Besides "Ca' the yowes," "Full fathom five," "Greensleeves," and "The Turtle Dove," the program includes rarely heard masterpieces such as "Alister McAlpine's Lament," which brilliantly captures the mood of the song with serene, sensual harmonies and gently flowing vocal lines. The Holst Singers seem born to this music, giving us the music's full flavor without ever overplaying it. --David Vernier

5 out of 5 stars a voice teacher and early music fan.......2006-07-21

Ralph Vaughan-Williams loved "the lilt of the chorus at the music hall...children dancing to a barrel organ, the rousing fervor of a Salvation Army Hymn, St.Paul's and a great choir singing at one of its festivals...the Welshmen striking up one of their own hymns...the cries of street pedlars, the factory girls singing their sentimental songs." This disc somehow reflects all of these influences. I think it makes him a true folksong specialist!!!The music included herein covers the whole of the composer's long career-from "The Willow Song"written when he was eighteen, to "Heart's Music",composed three years before his death at the age of eighty-six. The Holst Singers along with the two soloists:Ian Bostridge (tenor) and Michael George (bass)are very excellent in their renditions. The choir is perfection in balance, diction, ensemble and emotional content. Bostridge with his sweet and pure tenor almost moves one to tears especially in "Greensleeves" and "Ca'the yowes". And Michael George was also very moving in his solo:"Loch Lomond". It is as if the entire performing group were aware of a statement made by Vaughan-Williams before his death: "if the roots of your art are firmly planted in your own soil, and that soil has anything to give you, you may still gain the whole world and not lose your own souls."

5 out of 5 stars Songs that Never Fade.......2005-11-21

A selection of the best of RVW's folksong arrangements performed with insight and restraint by the Holst Singers, with help from soloists like the incomparable Ian Bostridge. Vaughan William's respect for these folksongs is evident in his exquisite settings, which reveal their depth and subtlety, without obscuring their simplicity.

This is a recording to cherish.

5 out of 5 stars Heavenly, introspective, definitely the most soulful songs!.......2003-03-16

This collection of English and Scottish folk songs moved me to tears and made me experience a plethora of emotions over and over again. The beautiful melodies flowing from this CD conjure up melacholy, joy, sadness and wonder. They crystalise the most common human experiences and the mystery of existence into certain folksong idioms that, once listened to, will stick in your ears and stir your heart strings for a long time.

Salute to Vaughan Williams for documenting, preserving and arranging these gems of English and Scottish heritage. Holst singers performe splendidly. Their discipline and professionalism, and a sense of artistic direction shine through.

I highly recommend this CD along with John Rutter's "The Lark in the Clear Air" for all the sensitive people who take interest in classical music and traditional folk songs.

I wish I can give this CD 10 stars!

This cd was a genuine delight. The music, plus really good liner notes, was an education in itself. I knew little about this group of composer- arrangers and the time in which they lived. "Fat White Woman Whom Nobody Loves" may not have been meant as humorous, but it was anyway. This has got to be one of the KS'S all-time best.

Considering CD singles are over-priced and offer usually only one b-side nowadays, Nick Cave hooks us up with this single. The live versions of Hiding all Away and Beautiful World are definitive. They surpass the album versions, and who knew that would be possible? Awesome artwork as well. Hopefully he'll release a proper live disc from this tour, considering he didn't set foot in North America.
