It's fitting that the Kid Rock revival got started when the Beastie Boys featured him in their Grand Royal magazine--and not because the kid from Detroit shares their skin tone. Rock has often been compared with the early Beasties--the boys of "Fight for Your Right to Party" and "Brass Monkey," the boys no one ever thought would grow up. With lines like "I ain't straight outta Compton, I'm straight out the trailer" and "I started an escort service--for all the right reasons," it's obvious that Kid Rock doesn't aim to follow suit. But that's no hindrance to Devil--backed by the funky metal band Twisted Brown Trucker and special guests like blues vets Robert Bradley and Thronetta Davis, Rock is hosting one hell of an interesting party. Ultimately, Rock's party is great, schlocky fun, equal parts old Beasties and Sebastian Bach--making Devil a guilty pleasure, the Starship Troopers of hip-hop. --Randy Silver

5 out of 5 stars A Modern Detroit Rock Classic.......2007-07-12

I bought this album the day it came out almost ten years ago in my hometown of Detroit. Since then I've bought the Limited Edition LP, all of the singles off of it, and the clean radio edition of the album just to say I own them all. To say that I love the album is probably a bit much.

When listening to this album it's key to remember the source and time that it came out. It was released right around the time of the Limp Bizkit era and the rap / rock fusion sound is what we were listening to at the time. This combined with the fact that Kid was originally a Detroit rapper should alone explain the overall sound of the album. If it doesn't then you should consider the source...

It was released by a Detroit artist for a Detroit audience. You're talking about the town where to this day Bob Seger has outsold the Beatles (and with good reason, if you ask me). The music scene in Detroit has always been a little off kilter to the rest of the country, so if you're buying the album specifically for "Only God Knows Why" then you'll be disappointed and should buy the single instead.

You should buy this album if you're looking for a specific sound that you won't hear duplicated anywhere else, before or since.

2 out of 5 stars Very good.......2007-05-13

I bought this CD for "Only God Knows Why" since it is a great song

2 out of 5 stars NOT SO "ROCK".......2007-04-14

ALTHOUGH HIS NAME IS KID ROCK HE SINGS MOSTLY RAP. THIS CD IS A FLOP. I THINK THE ONLY GOOD SONG ON THIS CD IS "ONLY GOD KNOWS WHY". THIS SONG PROVES THAT THERE ARE PRICES TO FAME AND ITS NOT ALL WHAT ITS CRACKED UP TO BE. IF YOU REALLY LIKE KID ROCK I SAY GET THE CD. IF YOU LIKE 1 SONG BY KID ROCK I SAY DONT GET THIS CD.

1 out of 5 stars I can't believe people listen to this garbage.......2007-03-29

I am so thankful that all of these songs are out of radio rotation, because this jerk has created some of the worst music that America has ever witnessed. If you gave this album any more than two stars you should get your head checked.

5 out of 5 stars A Classic.......2007-01-31

I've literally worn out my first copy of this CD and bought another. Truly a classic. Rap is crap, but his style of it with hard rock, grit and attitude is fine with me. The album is a public service actually. We needed the song Cowboy to replace Back in Black as the perennial strip club theme song. A replacement was long overdue.

Album Description

Looping and multi-tracking his voice onstage to create his own live backing tracks, Kid Beyond layers his transcendent singing voice over his own beatboxing and vocal instrumentation. The result is a riveting brew of pop-electronica that has drawn comparisons to Gorillaz, Moby, Fatboy Slim, Thievery Corporation and M.I.A. His live show has been called "Amazing… truly impressive" (Keyboard Magazine); "Deep, powerful…" (SF Weekly); "Fiercely charismatic… truly mesmerizing" (East Bay Express); "Kid Beyond's mouth is something you must hear." (Remix Magazine).

Kid Beyond's diverse vocal talents converge on his debut EP, Amplivate. Produced by alt-hip-hop wizard Alias (Anticon Records), San Francisco's The Rondo Brothers (Dan the Automator) and LA's Gabriel Mann, Amplivate casts Kid Beyond's soulful singing voice and conscious lyrics in a sea of crunchy break-beats, dubby bass-lines, wobbly turntables, swirling strings, bleepy bloops, distorted guitars… all produced from his mouth.

Kid Beyond's career has exploded in the past year. An endorsement video for Ableton Live (the leading music-looping computer software) - of Kid Beyond demonstrating his live-looping techniques in his kitchen - became one of the Web's most viral videos of 2005. Director JJ Abrams (Alias/Lost) requested a Kid Beyond version of the Mission Impossible theme for the MI:3 DVD. VH1 brought him onto their reality show "Supergroup" to fill in for Jason Bonham as a human drum kit, appearing alongside Ted Nugent, Skid Row's Sebastian Bach and Anthrax's Scott Ian. A profile on Kid Beyond landed in heavy rotation on Al Gore's Current TV cable channel. Electronica pioneer BT flew him to LA to collaborate on an all-vocal dance track. Hip-hop / spoken-word legend Sage Francis put one of Amplivate's tracks (the Buddhist-blues anthem "I Shall Be Free") on an upcoming compilation CD.

Having shared the stage with Keane, Lyrics Born, The Coup, Michael Franti & Spearhead, String Cheese Incident, Amon Tobin, KRS-One, Buckethead, The Wailers and Particle, Kid Beyond has attracted an intensely loyal following of techno-Burners, hip-hop heads, jam-band fans, MySpace kids and bloggers worldwide. This "underground legend" is not going to stay underground for long.

An intresting new direction for music from a very talented artist. Kid beyond provides four exellent tracks. the only failing is that there are only four songs on this disc. I was very hungry for more

5 out of 5 stars Phenomenal!.......2006-12-21

I also just saw Kid Beyond open for Imogen Heap in Milwaukee, and even though she's incredible herself I half expected the openers to be lame. I missed the first one (Levi Weaver) but walked in to Kid Beyond... his incredible beats and twists are completely breathtaking. He has this astounding power on stage that you can't stop watching. The way he uses his hands is brilliant, and makes you want to jump up on stage with him. He assisted in a number of songs for Imogen Heap with background effects, and the raw talent of this guy was not lost in the wave of adoration for Immi - another impressive attribute. Although it's definitely a must have cd, it's no lie that you have to see him live to get the full effect. I give this guy 5 stars!

5 out of 5 stars I Second That!.......2006-12-19

I also just saw Kid B open for Imogen in Milwaukee - WOW! I swear, the whole crowd had their mouths hanging open in awe and amazement at this dude's raw talent! Cool cd, especially once you realize that he's making every sound from his own mouth. Definitely take the opportunity to see this guy live for the ultimate experience of a lifetime! I'm in love!

5 out of 5 stars Amazing!.......2006-11-23

I just got back from seeing Kid Beyond open for Imogen Heap. This dude blew my mind. I've never seen something so amazing in my life! The album captures his beautiful voice and delicious beats but you have to see him live to get the whole experience. I swear to you, every sound that you hear on this record came out of his mouth. It's just this amazing man and his looping machine. Buy the CD and find out when he is coming to your town. Do not miss it! I promise you won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars He's idiotic and yet I find him completely charming!.......2006-10-24

I first learned of the oddly-named Kid Koala (AKA Erin San) on a trip-hop site; the webmaster had put up two mp3s, with no other information. Needless to say, I was absolutely captivated by his music.

And now the renaissance DJ/turntablist returns in his third album, "Your Mom's Favorite DJ," which hits on all his strong points. Equal parts musician and DJ, he dabbles in driving rock'n'roll, distorted trad jazz, hip-hop, and a colourful splatter of samples. If my mom liked any DJs, she'd like this one.

It's hard to even describe the longish songs on here -- they don't even feel long, because they're crammed with as much sound as Koala can smush in there. Weird groaning noises, perky jazz, piano solos, distorted horns, electronic buildups, funny vocal samples, solid hip-hop beats, repetitive samples, and thunderous hard-rock riffs that explode from the belly of "Mosquito Vs. Water Buffalo." And, of course, turntabling.

In other words, it's totally unpredictable -- Koala's music will completely change from one moment to the next, and he can pull new tricks and sounds out of his pocket. And sometimes they are based on things that aren't musical at all, like a song referencing his book "Nufonia Must Fall."

As much fun as it is, much of this album's pleasure comes from how devastatingly creative it is. Koala can take virtually any sound, no matter how odd or obscure, and paste it into just the right spot. That, and he knows that hip-hop can be colourful and creative, and doesn't have to take itself seriously at all. (Look at that title!)

How does he do that? He weaves together elaborate melodies of hip-hop beats and breaks, hard-rock and buzzing electronic variations on both of them. Then he layers them with samples, scratches, electronic ripples, and a heavy dose of "everything else," which pop up to keep the sound from ever being the same. It's even harder to find flaws when the music itself is a nonstop tumble of sound.

And there's no real vocals -- just more samples, keeping this from ever becoming (heaven forbid!) monotonous. "These things need to become second nature to a good progressive disc jockey," a radio announcer says, right before the grimy beats kick in.

My mom doesn't listen to DJs, but I imagine Kid Koala would be able to win her over. A complete triumph, and a thorough delight for anyone lucky enough to find out about it.

3 out of 5 stars Not An Essential Release, But a Decent Old School Hip-Hop Album That the Curious Should Try..........2007-06-16

'Grits Sandwiches for Breakfast' was released around the time Kid Rock went on what was known as one of rap's last great tours (it featured Kid Rock, Ice Cube, Yo-Yo, D-Nise, and Too $hort). Although Kid Rock's skills aren't exactly amazing here, his explicit, often sex-related rhymes (ala Too $hort) get the job done. They get repetitive after awhile, but the production on here saves it from what would have been a lower rating if not for the good beats (once again, thanks to Too $hort - he was responsible for the best songs on this album and was one of the producers here).

To get the most out of 'Grits Sandwiches For Breakfast' you have to have a little love for both Kid Rock and hip-hop. Many modern day Kid Rock fans were disappointed by this album, but that's because they didn't know what he was about in his early career.

Standout tracks: 'New York's Not My Home', 'Wax the Booty"', '"Trippin' Over a Rock"

4 out of 5 stars STOP HATING, u Morons..........2006-03-10

Does ANYONE on here know KID ROCK's history ??? He started off as a DJ, became HUGE in the Detroit area, THEN started rapping.
Soooo, he went from, DJ, to Rapping, to Rock/Rap, to Rock, then to Country Blues. He doesnt go back n forth. This album isnt worth a 5, but then again it is 2006, that album dropped in 1990s. You tell me what album still is GOOD from that era ???
This is a great album, it makes you laugh, got some good beats (By TOO $Hort) and had a nice flow. He would be BIGGER then M&M, if he stayed rutted in Boring BASS Beat Hip Hop. But he, UNLIKE all other c"rappers" evolved, and is now recognized in all music genres, and Gets RESPECT by all musicians. And one more thing, to people that say BLACK=RAP, and WHITE= ROCK.... Paul Wall, Beastie Boys, Kid Rock, and Eminem can OUTSELL any top 4 BLACK? rappers in the game. *Great album Kid Rock, and thanks for evolving, and makin even better albums* And to you "Haters" make sure you buy another 50 cent, or G Unit Album NOW... cause UNLIKE Kid Rock, they wont be around in 16 years.

3 out of 5 stars hey idiots.......2005-12-18

Ok Ill Admit this isnt rocks best album but it was also made in 1990 you cant expect everthing to sound like 2pac ok and the guy who said if he came to my hood shut up cuz u sound rediculous and probly a white boy who wish he was blackandlive in some place like montana and probly cant even spit a verse without quoting other rappers and one last thoughtfor that guy kid rock has respect every were b**ch for the people who read these for info if u like 80s beats and the typical cheesy 80s lyrics this is a good buy if your lookin for eminem style try lil wyte PEACE MUSICMASTER

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2005-07-20

I got nothin but love for kid rock (as a matter of fact, i think he's so fine!) and so much respect for his music, i think all his CDs rock...except this one. There's just way too much rap and barely any southern rock, rock and all of his other genres he mixes in his CDs. Im not a big fan of white rap b/c the white rock and the black rap but i do like his rap in all his other CDs. If you're thinking about buying this album- I HIGHLY recommend you buy "DEVIL WITHOUT A CAUSE", "KID ROCK" , or "COCKY". Those are my favorite Kid Rock albums.

1 out of 5 stars Black=Rap, and white=Rock.......2005-07-15

Who does this guy think he is, anyway? I go onto the i tunes music store and see him listed as 'rock', then I hear him and he sounds like Vanilla Ice or the Beastie Boys with his idiotic white rapper style voice and then he dresses like a redneck and talks like he's some gangsta, so this makes no sense to me.

Rap was, in my opinion, invented by N.W.A. and then it has really grown since then it has thrived because of the slammin' rappers out there today like Nas, Tupac, Talib, Mos Def, Cam'ron, Outkast, Pretty Ricky, long time ago Notorious BIG, and Snoop Dogg (His first three CD's, of coarse.) and you notice the skin color of each of those guys? Yeah, Kid Rock doesn't quite fit in. I'm real sorry but I am just frickin' sick of white guys tryin' to rap 'cuz it doesn't work. They just disgrace they own race and rap just ain't they place. They need to stick to their sick, devil worshippin', headbangin', mind numbin' heavy metal trash and leave rap the (...) alone. We don't need white guys comin' in and thinkin' they can rap 'cause no white guy ('Cept 4 Eminem) ever pulled off a rap song well, especially this guy. Stick to rock, and don't come into us rappers' territory thinkin' you fit in 'cuz if I ever saw you on the street in my hood you'd truly get it right where it hurts, if y'all know what I mean.

'Hip Hop is Dead' is the theme of the 22nd edition to the G-Unit Mixtape Radio series. Hip Hop was taken from us over time and it's time to give it its proper due. Leading the eulogy will be DJ Whooo Kid and 50 Cent aka Rap's Grim Reaper. This mixtape features music from Curtis Jackson, aka "The Man That Killed Hip-Hop" as he takes aim at Bad Boy's main man and debuts new G-Unit music from Lloyd Banks, Tony Yayo, Hot Rod, and 40 Glocc.

50's usually hit or miss with the G-Unit Radio Mixtapes, and this one is on the lower end of the spectrum. I Got Hoes and Girl Gimme Your Number are hot, and ther are like, three or four hhard hitters, but the tape before this is better. Hot Rod still hasn;t proven himself on this tape. Buy only if your a G-Unit collector or you've got extra $. Why pay 10 bucks here if you can get it for six or seven at mixtapeusa.com? I think they have package deals, too- five for 20 or something like that. Any of the the first eight G-Unit mixtapes is a sure shot banga.

As his alter-ego, "Kid Koala," might suggest, Eric San applies a joyous childlike vision to his music on Some of My Best Friends Are DJs. Following turns with Money Mark, Deltron 3030, and Lovage, Canada's cheekiest mixologist defied weighty expectations with his beguiling debut album, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. Three years later, and Kid Koala has retained his youthful verve. Packaged with a 52-page, self-penned comic and a travel chess kit, Some of My Best Friends Are DJs offers less in the way of music, with the 35-minute running time meaning the restless sonic snippets wisely end before his humor has a chance to grate. Mixing sleazy whisky-bar vibes with adolescent antics, his second album never allows the listener to settle. Moments of playful mixing magic are at times followed by baffling inanity as "Skanky Panky"--with its wonderfully shattered Ska rhythm and frantic scratches--runs into "Flu Season", ostensibly a series of beat-accompanied coughs, sneezes, and sniffs. Blending blues, jazz, and funk with a myriad of bizarre samples, moments of pure eccentric genius such as "Robochacha" and "More Dance Music" make this a flawed yet fascinating slice of beat-driven bravura. --Christopher Barrett

4 out of 5 stars Scientist Of Sound (4.5 stars).......2006-03-01

Kid Koala took the critics by storm with his exploration of using the turntable as an instrument like no other on his proper debut "Carpal Tunnel Syndrome". Since then, he's toured with the likes of Ben Harper, the Beastie Boys, Radiohead, and Bullfrog (as well as headlining his own shows). In addition, he's also worked with Dan the Automator and Deltron 3030 (aka Del Tha Funkee Homosapien) and Gorillaz. Not to mention he also released a 300-page comic book. For the most part, Koala dives into the leanings of his debut. In some ways, "Some of My Best Friends Are DJs" is better than his debut. He's found ways to expand his style and experiment in ways that even the converted will be shocked by. The soaring scratch melody of "Basin Street Blues", the exuberance of "Stompin' at le Savoi" and the enthralling "Skanky Panky" are arguably better than anything off of "Carpal Tunnel Syndrome". With that said, there is a bit less rhythm and unity here. A slight complaint would be that the music stops too much, and doesn't flow quite as well. But like his debut, repeat listening overshadows these weak moments with all of it's positive aspects. Overall, if you were a fan of the first record, this should definitely please you.

4 out of 5 stars Do You Get Your Money's Worth?.......2005-03-09

Ah, what a tangled web we weave as the amazingly talented Kid Koala lets loose a beautifully frustrating concept Jazz-turntablist album. Clocking in at just 35 minutes, including the four bonus tracks, the question is, was it worth the wait? Yes and no. The amount of precision skill involved in his first album, 2000's Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, is built upon to a point of superhuman proportions. Each play has its own reward as the many rich textures and impenetrably deep production cascade between your headphones. Jazz to the core, he plays each sound as if it's its own instrument recalling legendary old tunes while creating new ones. Even with the bonus tracks the album, as a whole, is a tight listen ... but 35 minutes? That's not even long enough for a good shag, at least not where I came from, and isn't that in some way the point of those funky beats? And, despite his fantastic display of scratch perversion, most songs lack that extra punch DJ Shadow possesses and the fun and adventure that made Carpel Tunnel so good. Most of the album can slide by unnoticed for the hyperactive child in each of us and for an album this length that is unacceptable.

So while Kid firmly cements his position as one of the greatest humans to ever destroy vinyl with this disk, he has also proved that he can get a chimp like me to pay him £20 an hour for him to do it. It's pretty hard to say if you get you money's worth.

4 out of 5 stars the turntable as an instrument.......2004-12-01

Eric San is one creative guy. He makes music, writes comic books and can even make a chess board. He doesn't necessarily do these things seperately either. Some of my best friends are djs comes with the lot. The comic makes for a good read and the chess board ... well I just can't bring myself to cut up the cd packaging. These are side issues really though, what I'm interested in is the music.

I'm not that familiar with 'carpel tunnel syndrome', a previous album, but i would say this album is a little more cohesive. There's a sense of beginning and end and a little more structure. 'Basin street blues' kicks of the album and it's a piece of genius. It's got a slow looping drum with a trumpet (sic) sample strectched out over the top. The beat rolls in about 1 minute into the tune. It's brilliant, especially the bit about epileptic chram. The jazz theme rolls on through to 'elevator hopper' and 'annies parlour'.

I've never met him but i'd say Kid Koala must be a pretty fun guy. Some of my best friends is full of jokes, crazy statements and animal noises. It's also a pretty laid back affair, there are no guest MC's and no huge banging club hits. Is subtle turntabelism, not some over the top scratching for scrathing's sake hip hop. This is a very enjoyable album.

But that didn't happen. I ended up putting eight songs on my iTunes library. The album captivated me in a way that its style inspired me to be a DJ myself. And now I am a DJ. I will break the album down for you, listing the good, the bad, and the just okay.
