Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Almost as good as The Warrants..........2004-01-14

This album lived up to the expectations which were first created in 1985 with the release of the hit single (with the equally successful video clip) Take on me. But, it wasn't as good, or as fulfilling as John Doe and The Warrants: The Hits 1984 - 1990. My recomendation to any A-Ha, or Duran Duran fan is get yourself a copy of this, or any of their other hit albums (Sleep On Monday, Her Name was Lena)as you definitely won't be dissappointed.

A top album - John Doe and The Warrants.

4 out of 5 stars To call these guys a "one-hit wonder" is the ultimate sin!.......2003-08-24

Chances are, these days, if you asked a random person on the street if he or she had heard of A-Ha, they would say no. If they said yes, then more than likely the only song they would remember the band for would be Take On Me. Because of that track's vast success, the band often goes unappreciated. But, hopefully the release of this compilation will change all that. Read on for my review of Headlines And Deadlines - The Hits Of A-Ha.

PROS:
It doesn't need to be said. If you just want to buy an A-Ha hits compilation for Take On Me, you'll find it on here. Plus, you'll also get several highly underrated tracks that have always had to live in the shadow of their lone hit. Many of these tracks are remix versions, which are extremely hard to find. Likewise, on this compilation, you get The Living Daylights, which was recorded for the James Bond film of the same name. Though this track never achieved the success of other Bond themes, like Duran Duran's A View To A Kill, it is no less excellent.

CONS:
There is only one real problem with this CD - When it was released. It was released in the early nineties, and though this seems like the ideal time to release a hits package for a group predominantly considered an "eighties band", the band has made several excellent tracks since this was released, and needless to say, you won't get those on here.

OVERALL:
This is the best A-Ha hits package out there, and it is strongly recommended to any fan of the band, casual or die-hard. Even if you're a die-hard fan of the band, it's very unlikely you'll ever find all of their material on CD (if you live in the United States), so I suggest you just buy this. It should be all the A-Ha you'll ever need.

5 out of 5 stars Some great music from the 80's.......2003-06-02

Maybe you don't even know who A-ha is, but you sure know a song of theirs. When you first hear this album you might feel like "where do I know this track from?" but even if you can't remember, I'm sure it'll sound as good as if you could. The album gathers their 16 greatest hits, they're all amazing songs from the 80's that you have probably heard at least once in your life.
A-ha used to be a big band when I was younger (and they made a lot of success in my country), and this album proves that even if they're not so good as they used to be before, they have same classic songs that are going to stay in our memories forever. I bet you still remember "Take on me", don't you?

4 out of 5 stars Scandinavian Talent!.......2002-11-25

I was 14 when a-ha stepped onto the scene in 1985.
Definitely the idea for the TAKE ON ME video was stuning, all that cartoons/live mixing was fresh stuff.
Plus the song was catchy and fast became a # 1 hit on both sides of the atlantic.
THE SUN ALWAYS SHINES ON TV did just great here in Europe but failed to repeat success in the US - although the mannequins storyboard for its video was just as good.
And the musical bridge boasts a great violin section.
A-ha proved to be polyedric artists: HUNTING HIGH AND LOW, TRAIN OF THOUGHTS are just nuggets, THE BLOOD THAT MOVES THE BODY and THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS (from the 1987 James Bond original soundtrack) border closely to high-class pop.
MANHATTAN SKYLINE and I'VE BEEN LOSING YOU are possibly the best tracks off their second album, while STAY ON THESE ROADS is a simple, well-crafted, radio-friendly tune.
The unreleased track MOVE TO MEMPHIS is stunningly poly-rhythmical, sensual and sung by a dark-voiced Morten Harkett.
The guys are long gone from the top of the charts but they're definitely not from my heart!

5 out of 5 stars Siempre los mejores.......2002-04-24

Este album consiste en toda una recopilación de los mejores exitos de a-ha.
The sun always shines on T.V., Take on me, You are the one, Stay on these roads es uno de los exitos que mas me gustan de este excelente compacto. A-ha tiene otros hits excelentes com Living in a boys adventure que es tambien una de las mejores de este grupo el cual se puede encontrar en el famoso Hunting high and low.
A-HA por siempre en la memoria de los inovadores 80's

4 out of 5 stars GREAT CD.......2003-11-29

THIS CD IS GREAT < I LEARNED ABOUT THE BAND WHEN THEY CAME TO MY TOWN AND PLAYED WITH THE ALKALINE TRIO AND THE START> THERE WAS MUCH MORE ENERGY ON STAGE THAN ON THE CD> SOME SONGS NEED TO BE POLISHED < BUT OTHER SONGS LIKE "VICTORIA" AND "SOS" ARE TRULY ONE MAN ARMY SOUND> I RECOMMEND THIS CD IF YOU LIKE BANDS SUCH AS THE ALKALINE TRIO (CHECK THEM OUT) PENNYWISE RANCID AND OFFSPRING>>>

4 out of 5 stars Good, but not their best.......2002-12-19

If you liked the first 2 cd's, you'll like this one. 1 Man Army is great. However, it seems that they have lost a bit of their street punk edge. This isn't necessarily a bad thing. They've matured as musicians and writers and this new album reflects that. New drummer, Chip Hanna (of US Bombs) brings a solid punk rhythm to all the songs, which is a nice compliment to Heiko's bass playing. He's also talked the boys into making the songs more anthemic. Now, you can sing along with the cd with 10 of your drunkest friends. Definitely recommended, but you won't be shouting "oi!" too often.

4 out of 5 stars Listen to the crowd, this one's great.......2007-01-21

John Powell has quickly become one of my favorite contemporary composers. He blends John Barry's melodic ability with Hans Zimmer's entertainingly bombastic, Phil Spector-y "wall of sound" approach. This is one of Powell's most enjoyable action scores, with a fantastic main theme.

Note: If you like the theme as much as I did, check out his score to "Just Visiting" too, the tune appears there in an earlier form, and the final track on that score album is a pop song arrangement of it that makes for a great listen.

5 out of 5 stars 4.5 Stars for Paycheck.......2006-01-31

This is one of the most exuberant action scores I've ever heard. It's fun from start to finish. The Hog Chase tracks alone are worth the price of the CD. When this score first came out, I passed on it because I thought I had grown out of techno-action scores, but then A&B Sound put many of their scores for 50% off so I decided, what the hell, let's buy this one.
Man, am I glad I did. This is action packed, joyous, heart-pounding music that's actually more in the vein of North by Northwest than The Italian Job. If you normally avoid techno scores, go ahead and buy this one, which is John Powell's finest score to date. Techno is too unfair a label to put on this one - "brilliance" is much closer.
cheers
KZ

4 out of 5 stars All action, all the time. . ........2005-08-18

I really wish they had half-star intervals for the ratings here, because while 3 stars doesn't really do this score justice, it doesn't quite merit 4.

Basically, this is John Powell's best score to date, not counting his collaborations with Harry Gregson-Williams. There's really nothing bad on here, but at the end it doesn't come together as anything more than the sum of its parts; it doesn't really afford a terribly satisfying listening experience. This score is action music all the way through, ranging from good to great. Highlights include the staccato stringwork in "20 Items" and "Future Tense," the brilliant "Hog Chase, Part 2," and "Fait Accompli." This is distinctive, energetic stuff (that for some reason that I can't put my finger on occasionally reminded me of Morricone. Maybe I'm crazy.), and no track is disappointing, but while it's engaging the whole way through, there's not really enough substantial music to really gel it all together, and you're not likely to be humming any of this stuff after you've listened to the CD.

So yes, this is an enjoyable CD, and a fine starting point if you're looking to get a taste of John Powell's music. It's got some very good action music, but little else. Fun, but not entirely satisfying, so I'd give it 3.5 stars.

4 out of 5 stars Very Distinctive.......2004-08-17

If you like soundtracks, I highly recommend this one, or any soundtrack composed by John Powell. His style is very distinctive.
If I was in charge at MGM James Bond, I'd sack the current Bond composer David Arnold, right away and put Powell in Arnold's place. The man is terrific. Buy his stuff people :)

4 out of 5 stars Overall boombastic action score.......2004-06-09

John Powell has certainly been making a name for himself. His score for "The Italian Job" has been getting rave reviews, and now he scores John Woo's stereotypical action flick, "Paycheck". Does it hold well? Yes.

Basically, it's very much a very boombastic action score, with a few cues given during the course of the score enough time for the listener to breathe.

Some of the highlights include tracks 7 & 8, the "Hog Chase" cues. Part 2 (Track 8) most certainly gives a "Bondian" kind of feel to the overall remix of "Rachel's Theme" (Track 14). Powell basically gives a David Arnold feeling with the "Hog Chase" cues.

"Future Tense", track 11, is a "suite" of sorts, basically remixing tracks 2, 3, 4 and 7 (among others) into it's own cue, and it works out well. "Fait Accompli", the track that follows it, is more slower-paced, and works very well.

Of course, we get "The Finger" (track 13), which is the shortest cue on the entire score (:33).

The score wraps up with "Rachel's Party". A slow-paced version of the theme that dominates almost every cue before it. However, I think the placement for this track is odd, it should be a bit earlier in the score.

Also, tracks 5 and 6 should've actually been one full track (as track 5 ends, it continues onto track 6), and can be jarring to some people, especially people who listen to the tracks in random order.

Overall, if you want a very good action score with enough cues to keep your toes tapping, John Powell's "Paycheck" is for you. It most certainly compensates for the sub-par movie it's scored for.

5 out of 5 stars Some Misunderstandings THEN I'll Get To The Good Stuff!!!.......2005-01-30

First off I have to say Midnight Star and Atlantic Star ARE NOT the same group! They may dress alike and have similar cover art but couldn't be more different.Anyway 'Headlines' is the last Midnight Star album featuring the brothers Calloway and it shows. The material here bears more similarity to that of Ready For The World and other mid 80's dance-funk groups, notably on the two best songs 'Midas Touch' and 'Engine Number 9'.The styles vary though from hard edged electro-funk to dance-pop and THAT'S what made the Calloway's so great-they could have a distinctive sound AND be diverse all at once.I don't think I'll get any arguements here that Midnight Star lost most of it's individuality after this album and this is the last time most fans will find their music of any interest. So happy listening!

The broadsides found on Folkways' second collection of Pete Seeger topical tunes are less broad than those found on its predecessor, If I Had a Hammer: Songs of Hope & Struggle. Where the earlier collection was laden with sweeping civil rights, labor, and antiwar songs, Headlines & Footnotes' selections are often drawn from specific events. "The Titanic" is a 1957 recording of the famed ode to the great ship. Woody Guthrie's "The Sinking of the Reuben James" was inspired by the sinking of a U.S. destroyer by the Nazis. "The Battle of Maxton Field" chronicles a confrontation between Klansmen and Native Americans. The generously annotated 23-song anthology contains a number of Seeger standards, including "Little Boxes," "The Bells of Rhymney," "Guantanamera," and "Wimoweh." Folkways controls a vast store of Seeger recordings made between the '40s and '70s. Headlines & Footnotes indicates they're in good hands. --Steven Stolder

    Album Description

For nearly 60 years Pete Seeger, with his banjo and 12-string guitar, has made music which inspires people to improve their lives and world. Selections on this anthology, culled from the hundreds Seeger recorded for Folkways Records between 1955 and 1999, include concert and studio recordings about prominent events and themes of the twentieth century: the Spanish Civil War, union organizing, and the civil rights and antiwar movements. Eleven previously unreleased tracks (one recorded in 1999). 74 minutes.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful collection of story songs.......2003-08-11

This may be considered as a companion volume to another fine Pete Seeger compilation, If I had a hammer - songs of hope and struggle, which I've already reviewed. Whereas that compilation was firmly focused on political songs, this one is billed as a collection of topical songs, but many of the topics on these songs are political anyway.

Of course, there are a few non-political songs, like The Titanic, perhaps the most famous sunken ship. It's not the only sunken ship to get a song here, but unlike the Titanic, the sinking of the Reuben James is a political story, as it was the first American ship torpedoed by the Germans in World War II.

Little boxes was inspired by urban sprawl. Its writer, Malvina Reynolds, had offered the song to several other folk singers and groups before it came to Pete's attention. Pete loved it immediately and it has become one of his most famous recordings. Sadly, it is even more relevant today than it was forty years ago, as urban sprawl continues to eat up the countryside. Unlike so many of Pete's political songs, Little boxes is a song that many people can relate to, whatever their political believes, because it merely states the problem and offers neither cause nor solution.

There are many other excellent songs here. All the essential Pete Seeger songs can be found here or on the other compilation, If I had a hammer - songs of hope and struggle.

5 out of 5 stars An essential album by an essential artist........2000-07-05

There are many albums out there by Pete Seeger, and this one is one of my favorites. It has songs written by Woody Guthrie and others, but also features many Seeger staples, such as "Guantanamera" "Bells Of Rhymney" "Wimoweh" and "Little Boxes." Seeger is an artist that needs to be heard and he is getting that respect by the release of this and other Seeger classics.

Neon Blonde is the alter ego of Blood Brothers vocalist Johnny Whitney and drummer Mark Gajadhar. Unlike the often frantic and frenzied songs of the duo's other band, Neon Blonde is a much more eclectic, dancing, and melodious venture, which touches on the art-rock tunes of Brian Eno and early David Bowie. Contains the first single from the Seattle band's upcoming Dim Mak album, "Chandeliers In The Savanna", slated for a September 2005 release. For fans of The Blood Brothers, David Bowie, Prince, Freddie Mercury, Brian Eno.

I lope and loll my head back and forth, to and fro. My beak stretches skyward and eats sun-sparkling goop, dangled from the mouth of God above me.

Once, and the sound of brooding pianos set in, only to flirt with string sections, the meat is divine, and ripe for my inside-bits.

Twice, and a pure rarity, fuzzed-out electronic beats mingle with the heavenly voice, I flap my wings with new-minted instincts and nearly break gravity's harsh grip.

Thrice, and the beat comes into my heart, my arms move and flail and hurl blood down my inner-corridors, fire my whatsits and transistors. Chirps emerge. I am free.

    Fourth.

It's over. They've left me, for now, gathering more food, and I feel my limbs quiver and convulse as the sinew and muscles I'll need later begin their incubation.

A Chandelier dangles off in the distance, over the sunblasted savannah.

5 out of 5 stars Move to Memphis.......2001-08-15

The version of ýMove to Memphisý on this album really makes this album stand out. What a song and a rendition. This is much different than the version on the MEMORIAL BEACH album. This version seems to have a lot more movement to it but it gives you a feel of the direction their music was heading on MEMORIAL BEACH. ýThe Living Daylightsý is the version heard on the soundtrack album and not the one from STAY ON THESE ROADS. ýThe Sun Always Shines on T.V.ý and ýHunting High And Lowý (Remix) are fantastic. This is a good collection. It could have been better depending on your taste, but a-ha is so esoteric I donýt think you can ever please any of their fans with just one CD. Somebodyýs favorite song (s) is always going to be left out. This is still a must-have album.
