***** WHAT INGREDIENTS ***** does a good album need? How about a strong story, strong lyrics, strong composition, strong vocals and strong instrumentals. And here are the folks who can deliver just that! Check it out!!
***** WHAT WILL YOU HEAR? WHAT'S THE STORY? ***** This high-concept CD links songs with a storyline in a pop/Broadway fusion and is the brainchild of popular Canadian musician, composer and Ph.D. Larry (Dr. L) Tarof and lyricist/TV veteran, Lila Rose.
Predicated on the notion that modern love is so challenging that even Cupid himself dials 911 today, Cupid 911 will take audiences on a roller coaster ride with songs such as "Roll the Dice on the Red", in which a thrilling one-night stand is alluded to with gambling metaphors - only to result in the crash and burn of the morning after via the upbeat, yet ruefully insightful title track, "Cupid 911". From the joy of a wedding day to the secrets of adultery this CD and story also explores the friendships that get us through, and the human spirit's stubborn insistence on continuing to strive in "Drive Baby Drive (the road of your dreams)". There is no seatbelt in the fast lane of love.
Featuring three young rising-star Ottawa singers who perform as 'characters' with the monikers: The Impulsive Heartbreaker, The Other Woman and The Woman Scorned, Cupid 911 offers stunning lead vocals by Becky Abbott, Stacey Ingrey and Brianna Szarka. All three are Kiwanis Festival winners. They were hand-picked by Dr. L, who produced the CD at his Ottawa-based studio, Dr. L's Music. Cupid 911 was premiered live at Canada's National Arts Centre (Fourth Stage) to standing ovation.
CD includes lyric insert and story precis.

A Pop Opera (4.5 stars, actually).......2006-09-18
Cupid 911 is a cross between jazz pop and Broadway- telling the story of three female friends (represented through three talented vocalists), the man who gets between them, and how their lives change after their private ordeals have taken place. The story is told through the liner notes, and is only hinted at (if even hinted at all) through the music, which I actually found incredibly refreshing- as one can enjoy the music simply as a collection of songs rather than being forced to piece together a plot from some pretentious attempt at a rock opera.
On to the actual music:
The music is very slow in tempo for the most part. Seven of the twelve tracks are ballads, and only three of the five remaining tracks are fast paced. Perhaps this isn't what you would play at a swingers club, but it makes for flawless background music for something like a cocktail party, and probably wouldn't have been out of place as a lounge act.
Cupid 911, The Storm Inside and Too Hard To Hold are easily the highlights of the album (the first two being jazz rock, the other being more laid back lounge jazz), displaying fittingly angsty piano riffs under gritty lyrics that I personally found to really provide the album's identiy.
The album flow easily from track to track with two exceptions: the opening track is very misleading- as it is a mellow electronica track most suited for a dance club, and contrasts with the high-class lounge textures of the album. Coincidentally, the closing track (enjoyable and cute as it is) would have been best suited for a 60s female Motown collection, but is a very nice lead into The RadioSirens album "Fearless", which contains similar material.
On the whole, a very introspective album that can be enjoyed passively or seriously- both benefiting from repeat listens. Goes best with red wine.
