Great to Hear All those great Voices from the Past.......2007-07-05

I just wanted to confirm what the first reviewer had to say about this CD. To hear Ethyl Merman, Mary Martin, Andrea McCardle etc. singing their trademark songs brought a lot of memories from the mid-centry musical theater back again. The last song by Glynis Johns is especially poignant.
You certainly can't beat the price!

A Good One!.......2006-11-10

This is a very good CD, mostly because it's the original artists. I've had some that were re-recorded by no name artists that were ghastly. This one is a really good one--including the sound quality. If I had one wish, I would wish it were longer!

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

Two Great Albums.......2006-04-22

This has most of the Drifters greatest hits- Up On The Roof, Save The Last Dance For Me, There Goes My Baby, Under The Boardwalk, and On Broadway. Plus all but 3 songs are in stereo, and it has the mono and stereo versions of Up On The Roof (my favorite Drifters song). This is great- and is cheap.

Has the "right" version, 45pm of Up on the Roof.......2004-01-17

For a young guy who listens to the likes of Midnight Oil, Nirvana, and Outkast among others, take it from me, this is music at its best. Not a real fan of "oldies" music, but there's just something about the Drifters. I was first introduced to this fantastic group through the PBS show Reading Rainbow some 10 yrs ago. The song played was Up on the Roof, and i just couldn't get it out of my head. In fact, I was so enamored by this one song, that I rushed to the music store(this was before the MP3 revolution, so I actually bought a few cds back then) to purchase the first Drifters cd that contained it. Unfortunately, the song on the cd was a different verison than what I had heard on the TV(now u know why I love Mp3s). Don't worry though, this cd has the "better" version of Up on the Roof. And you want to know what? Golly gee Wally, I went ahead and bought it! Thanks Drifters!

I think this si a great cd! The Drifters are very talented. Their talent is displayed on this album. I love Under the Boardwalk, Up on the Roof, and On Broadway! These are songs that I grew up on.

It's different - but terrific!.......2006-02-18

It's definitely not the usual Neil Diamond we've known, but I immediately was spell-bound by the beautiful acoustics and soulful beats of the songs on this CD. I was completely mesmerized by the new renditions. The only song I didn't care for was the one with Dolly Pardon,as I thought her voice ruined the song. This, however,was overshadowed by the many others included which were wonderful. You will either hate this "different" Neil Diamond - or love him. - I love him!

You must make up your own mind.......2004-09-17

It is clear that opinion is divided regarding this collection of covers. Personally, I love it, but I note that some Neil Diamond fans only like his original material, claiming that his particular style is not suited to covers. Neil clearly enjoys doing covers. Apart from this album, he's recorded an album of movie songs and two Christmas albums. He's also included covers on some of his other albums.

On this album, Neil records a number of songs written by songwriters he knew in the early sixties (though some songs here are from the fifties). He wrote the liner notes, discussing the various songwriters. Almost as an afterthought, he provides a list of the original artists, though some of the songs have actually become more famous by other, later versions.

You've lost that loving feeling, as performed here, sounds very different from the original version by the Righteous brothers. Neil had the great idea of doing it as a duet with Dolly Parton and (to my ears) it works superbly, bringing a freshness to the song.

Do wah diddy diddy, originally a minor American hit for the Exciters, topped the charts in Britain and America after Manfred Mann covered it. Neil performs this with Mary's Danish.

The remaining songs are all solo performances by Neil and include three songs that were American hits for the Drifters (Up on the roof, Save the last dance for me, Sweets for my sweet) and two for Ben E King (I who have nothing, Spanish Harlem). These songs were all hits in Britain but sometimes via cover versions by British artists.

Another classic song, River deep mountain high, was a top three UK hit for Ike and Tina Turner but only a minor American hit for them. In the early seventies, it became a hit again when covered by the Supremes and Four Tops. It was a top twenty hit on both sides of the Atlantic.

This album contains other great songs made famous by Dionne Warwick (Don't make me over, Do you know the way to San Jose), the Mindbenders (A groovy kind of love), Neil Sedaka (Happy birthday sweet sixteen), the Shirelles (Will you love me tomorrow) and Elvis Presley (Don't be cruel). Love potion number nine, originally recorded by the Clovers, is better known via a cover by the Searchers.

Ten lonely guys, a minor American hit for Pat Boone, was Neil's first taste of success as a songwriter. Even so, he was one of ten co-writers.

So, this is a collection of classic songs from the fifties and early sixties as covered by one of America's enduring performers. The question you have to ask yourself is - Do you like Neil's covers of these songs? Only you can answer that. I can say that I love them.

Oh no no no.......2000-12-14

From one of his own great songs - "Oh no no no". I reviewed "The Film Album" saying Neil is a great writer and singer - but not of other peoples material. This album just proves my point. "Don't Be Cruel" - don't sing it again. I listened to it wondering if I could hear Elvis spinning in his grave. Stick to your own material Neil, you're superb at that, but please please not this.

WOW! this is soooo great.......2000-05-31

when i first picked up this CD, i was going through my 5th divorce- and i was having a hard time coping with my pain. Neil, "neily baby", as i like to call him- really spoke to my heart with this one. i wouldnt have made it through the 5th wife without this record. i have since married again to a 17 year old cheerleader from my sons high school class, and i still love this records fine instrumentation with neils soft emotive voice. 5 STARS!

One GHASTLY CD.......1999-09-30

Put this one on in your Halloween CD player and scare away everyone! This is one truly awful CD, one of the worst of the decade.

This is great. Anything with Ethel, Bernadette, Barbara (both of them), Mary, and Marin is beyond words. Any one of them by themselves is awesome but these ladies together are mind blowing. All of the women sound amazing but they made a mistake on the list of songs and composers. "Raise the Roof" sung by Julia Murney (I love her)was written by Andrew Lippa, not LaChusia.

OK, so it sounds crazy to review an album with Ethel Merman and Bernadette Peters on it and not mention them. But...tough. I've read enough about them to know how good they are.


Buy this album as a token of love to the producer who had the cajones to put Julia Murney on an album celebrating the last 100 years of Broadway divas.

Because SHE is one of the greatest voices of the decade!

I've got the original music (including v2 and v3), the books (the best is Heitland's The Man from U.N.C.L.E. Book; still in print);
the 22 VHS tapes issued in the early 1990's (a haphazard collection issued in no particular order of episodes that boasted famous guest stars). Can I please get the whole series on DVD? I have not seen Mother Fear toying with Illya (The Children's Day Affair) in over 40 years.

Many of us have always thought The Man From UNCLE had the best music for a TV series ever, and this three double CD release confirms this. Wow! I'd be just happy with one CD, but having SIX (three double CDs packages) is absolutely out of this world, I mean, a lifetime wait come true.

Indeed, this is an unbelievable collection of three double CDs packages with the complete series soundtrack, and I mean the complete music, not a tune is missing.

And this is the ORIGINAL Man From Uncle music. Let me stress the point: this is the four years ORIGINAL soundtrack with the original recordings as they were heard throughout the series, not a no-name orchestra doing personal versions of the stuff. The audio transfer is very, very good, the music from late episodes is even in stereo.

Each individual CD carries over 70 minutes of music. All in all there you have the four TV seasons main titles and all, absolutely all of TMFU unforgetable music.

This is not a chronological release, meaning, all CDs have a mix of music from all four TV seasons. Volume 1 is heavier on early TV seasons stuff, fans of Jerry Goldsmith will love it. Those of us who prefer what Gerald Fried and later Richard Shores did with TMFU music, then volume 2 is mandatory. If you are a fan, you can't miss any of these six CDs. However if buying all three double packages is too much for you, you must go with Volume 2, no questions asked. Volume three is the weakest of them as it brings "suites" and a whole CD with "The Girl From Uncle" soundtrack, but you have a bonus "Open Channel D" beeper.

Each package is gorgeous, each with a glossy color booklet with extensive liner notes with details on how each tune was written to a specific TV series episode and how it was used onwards. You have bios on the composers, on how the recordings were made, even an overview on how many instruments were available in each of the years the music was recorded.

So, throw away your Hugo Montenegro Man From Uncle CD, this is the REAL thing.
