i may be stupid, but i know a great record when i hear one. there are great melodies all over this recording. great lyrics and vocals, too. a stunning laid back recording, perfect for evenings or cloudy sunday afternoons. buy while it can still be found.

5 out of 5 stars BEST CD EVER.......2006-04-08

I bought this several years ago just on a whim. I was at B&B and it was on there listening display...never heard of them, but wow, it was awsome. Now It is still my most favorite CD ever and I have tons. The music and singing are just beautiful...

Beautiful vulnerable and honest pop. About the half of the songs are quiet, without drums, the rest is a bit dynamic.

5 out of 5 stars Can't Keep It!.......2005-08-05

Everything good can and has been said already of this gorgeous offering. I don't think I own another CD I love as much or have played as often for as many years as I have this one. Every feeling, every emotion, every physical, spiritual or sensual experience finds a fresh perspective carried on Karin's achingly earnest vocals.
Plumb the depths and heights of the elegant melodies and startlingly ingenuous lyrics for yourself, but be warned: lock this baby up when you're not playing it. I've purchased this disc THREE TIMES and every time it seems to mysteriously disappear, never to be seen again. I'll buy it again -- and gladly -- but for pete's sake, get your own copy and leave mine alone!

5 out of 5 stars A must have for any music lover.......2005-06-15

I have had to buy this cd 4 times. It seems to have a way of disappearing around my friends!!! However, each and every time I have bought it has been worth it. The first time I heard OTR was live and was enraptured by Karin's angelic voice. I bought this cd that night and have become an avid fan. I have yet to find anyone who is not immediately impressed by this group after hearing this cd. The songs, imparticularly Latter Days and Poughkeepsie, have a way of haunting me and often, I find myself singing them all day. This is a must have!!

5 out of 5 stars Soothing sounds of Led Zeppelin..........2005-03-01

Before I write my review, I thought you would like to know that I have not had a chance to listen to "Kashmir: The Symphonic Led Zeppelin". Keep that in mind if you are trying to decide between the two.

I think I would consider myself an average Led Zeppelin fan. I appreciate their music, and I listen to them every so often. I'm not one of the hardcore Zeppelin fans, so you might not appreciate this tribute as much as I do. I would have to say that this tribute is very well done, and a lot of time and effort was put into making it. The strings are pretty much in sync with the original songs, and just a few seconds into the song, you'll be able to tell what it is. I'm not going to go through a list of songs and tell you what I think of them, but I will say that I think the best one is "Ten Years Gone." This album - or albums, I should say - are great if you're looking for a soothing and relaxing version of some of the great Led Zeppelin songs. Though, I must say that you will only appreciate the tribute if you know the songs themselves, because if you don't then the song just might get repetetive. I'm a fan of the whole String Quartet Tribute thing, and I'd have to say that this is one of the best ones I've heard so far.

2 out of 5 stars Not my cup of tea.......2003-11-18

For some reason this CD just sounded really corney to me. I was really dissapointed. Your opinion may differ but I would recommend that if you are looking for a classical Zeppelin CD you get Kashmir instead. It is cheaper and shines a new light on some awsome songs rather than butchering them.

4 out of 5 stars Finally, Led Zeppelin Done Well in Strings........2003-02-20

A few of the selections are questionable for arrangment for a string section. I mean, Whole Lotta Love? Dazed and Confused? Give me a break. They could have replaced those poor choices with a number of other possibilities.

Nevertheless, it is the first attempt of it's kind, and the songs that are suitable are gorgeously performed.

Led Zeppelin's gifts for creating melodies and knowledge of music theory become more obvious in these classical performances.

It's a double CD so it has lots of songs!

5 out of 5 stars Fine reissue of a classic set.......2006-05-24

Think about the stupidest, most formulaic Hollywood movies you can think of: cheesy action pictures, fluffy, unfunny comedies, big but stiff epics. Now imagine that one of the greatest living composers was working in Hollywood, turning out astonishing, hauntingly beautiful and stirring musical scores for these throwaway movies. That's what you get with this set: music Henry Purcell composed for some two dozen often utterly forgettable plays (trust me--I've read a number of them!) Occasionally, when he teams up with a playwright worthy of his stature, such as John Dryden, Aphra Behn, or William Congreve, the results are even better, but for the most part you can enjoy the music here without knowing anything about the original plays.

This set originally appeared as separate LPs in the 70s and 80s, and has been long out of print. That's a pity, since Purcell spent a good deal of his short professional life in the theatre, either writing the incidental music contained on these CDs, or the music for his larger works, the semi-operas (King Arthur, The Fairy Queen, and the like). Almost all of these works are enjoyable gems; certainly, they represent a pinnacle of English 17th century music. Purcell had a genius for spinning musical gold out of the most leaden lyrics (check out his Odes and Welcome Songs on Hyperion if you don't believe me), and he does the same with the song texts in these plays.

Hogwood and the AAM offer clean, listenable performances, and the sound on these old analog discs has been cleaned up and brightened--although they were pretty good, even in the late 70s. As with most Hogwood, emotional extremes are kept to a minimum, so the "otherworldly" nature of late 17th century music, so often emphasised in more recent Baroque performances, doesn't come across here. It would be interesting to see what a group like The King's Consort would do with this music, but this set fills the major gap in the Purcell canon quite nicely.

My only beef with the reissue, as with many reissues, is that the liner notes are rather thin for a 6-cd set--the lyrics to the songs, for example, are especially missed. Still, it's a worthwhile set, and a must for fans of Purcell, English Baroque music, or anyone who just wants to experience a taste of the last days of the Restoration stage.

5 out of 5 stars album to live by.......2006-06-24

deep : spiritual : lush : fun : intelligent

this album is the soundtrack to my life and to many of my closest friends. everyone i have recommended it to has fallen in love with it.

there are only a few perfect albums i have ever heard, and besides emmylou harris's Wrecking Ball, this is the best ever.

just buy it- buy it for your friends, buy it for your loved ones. buy a bottle of red and some cheese, and a box of tissues.

5 out of 5 stars music to dream, laugh, mourn, and sing to.......2004-05-06

i love this cd, i love OTR - i have never heard a more soulful and angelic voice, or words that spoke to me - and even for me - like the lyrics to these songs. the first time i heard OTR was when a friend took me - i'd never heard their music before. i was entranced.

5 out of 5 stars Which Part of this will leave a scar?.......2000-09-14

This album will leave a scar for life. An elegant, melodic, and intelligent album which, as another reviewer noted, is so finely crafted that it deserves to be and should be played from beginning to end. When it ends, you will crave more.

I first heard of Over the Rhine when they opened for the Cowboy Junkies in 1998 (I believe), and I was mesmerized. An excellent band to see live, the album surpasses that. Over the Rhine came through Seattle again once in the time since and I am an even bigger fan, adamant that this band is one band you have probably never heard of but NEED to. This year (2000) two members of Over the Rhine went on tour with the Cowboy Junkies and joined the Junkies' always large and amusing onstage ensemble.

"Lord knows we learned the hard way all about healthy apathy... I use these words pretty loosely..." vocalist Karen Bergquist sings in the slow, melancholy opener "Latter Days." The album is full of the slower, heartfelt songs like "Latter Days" and "Poughkeepsie" and more up-tempo gems as "All I Need Is Everything" and the seductive "Faithfully Dangerous."

You will not regret this purchase. Over the Rhine will leave an indelible mark...

5 out of 5 stars Flat Out Fantastic.......2000-03-11

This is a great CD that gets better and better over time! The music is sophisticated and elegant yet it matches the emotion of the lyrics. The lyrics are pure poetry. I have played this on my radio program in Interior Alaska, and always gets calls about the music--"Who did that great tune ! " I love the nane of the CD, too.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting.......2003-04-24

Back in my high school days in the 1970s, Led Zeppelin was by far my favorite group. I considered them to be the most talented rock group in the world; 30 years later I still think they were the greatest rock group in existence at the time.

To hear a dynamic group like Led Zeppelin put to the music of a string quartet may sound like Muzak-ing Led Zeppelin, but the album doesn't come off that way. The string players are both respectful and playful, having fun with the bizarre mixture of Led Zeppelin music and the instrumentation of a string quartet without losing the feel of the originals, presenting an enjoyable performance of the songs, rather than a destroyed one that Muzak-ing would do.

My favorite two songs on here are "The Ocean" and "Whole Lotta Love"--not necessarily my favorite Led Zeppelin songs in general, but I like the effect here. With this string quartet adaptation of "The Ocean," an almost Middle Eastern sound is revealed in the melody that I'd never noticed before. This is the kind of thing that makes such a project worthwhile--bringing things out of the songs previously unnoticed. "Whole Lotta Love" works much better than I thought it would--the cello line is great! This song is augmented by a distant, fuzzed-up sampling of the song's original vocals, the only song on this album to do that. But it doesn't lose the feel of this "classical" album.

"Bron-Y-Aur Stomp" also works especially well, although I was never a fan of the song to begin with.

The other titles are pretty good too. You'd probably appreciate this album more if you knew the original songs, though.
